Tried and Tested: SMOKY EYE PALETTES (31.12.09)
Kick off the New Year in style with a glamorous, smoky eye palette. We’ve put six to the test…
BENEFIT SMOKIN’ EYES, SEXY EYE & BROW MAKEOVER KIT, £26.50 (www.benefitcosmetics.co.uk)
What they say: This complete eye and brow kit has everything you need for that sexy, smoky look. Now even amateurs can go pro!
The Results: I absolutely love this product. It looks gorgeous on my dressing table, but it really delivers as well. I’m not very confident with eye makeup, so I’ve stuck to eyeliner in the past – but the great thing about this kit is that it gives you a step-by-step guide on how to apply the different shades to achieve the perfect smoky eye effect. The colours are quite soft and sultry, which I preferred as it looked more natural and sophisticated. I also love that the fact that the compact comes with eyebrow wax and a pair of tweezers. It contains everything needed to create perfect party eyes!
Best for: Soft smoky eyes
TOO FACED SMOKEY EYE SHADOW COLLECTION, £20 (www.boots.com)
What they say: This smoky eye kit contains everything you need to create sexy, sizzling lids for any occasion and for any age. Included are three, easy-to-follow, step-by-step instruction cards that allow you to smoke it up for looks to take you from the office or school, straight to the red carpet or runway in a flash.
The Results: I love the packaging of this kit – it would make a lovely gift. It unfolds to reveal the contents, almost like a jewellery box, which gives it a vintage feel. The kit comes with three different shadow collections for work, daytime and evening – and three cards with instructions on how to create each look. It also includes two eye shadow applicators and liner brushes. The price might seem a lot at first glance, but so much is included that it’s very good value for money. After application, my eyes looked really dramatic and the colour had great staying power, which is useful as the box is too big to carry around on a night out.
Best for: Great value
BOURJOIS SMOKEY EYES TRIO EYESHADOW, £7.30 (www.asos.com/bourjois)
What they say: For a fail proof, sophisticated smoky eye look that lasts 8 hours.
The Results: These eyeshadows are very versatile, as I could use each colour individually or blend them together to achieve a really striking effect. Usually when I apply eyeshadow I find that powder falls onto my cheeks, so it’s quite a messy affair – but these shadows were great, as the colour stayed on the brush. It had great staying power too - the smoky shadow stayed on my lids throughout the night and didn’t crease at all. Better still, the kit is a really handy size, so I could throw it into my handbag in the morning before work - and apply the shadow before I headed out after work.
Best for: Staying power
URBAN DECAY SMOKE OUT KIT, £22 (www.boots.com)
What they say: Kept intact with a magnetic closure, the super compact kit is stacked to perfection with separate layers of each product and a hidden mirror that swivels for application on the go. Smokey eye instructions are even tucked away in a secret drawer.
The Results: When I was handed this kit, I assumed it must be expensive - it includes everything you need to create smoky eyes and is contained in stunning packaging, so I was very pleasantly surprised when I heard that it was so affordable. The compact is packed full of products, which includes eye shadows, mascara, eyeliner, and brushes. Better still, the kit isn’t at all bulky, so you can carry it round easily. The mirror is fantastic - it’s big enough to easily apply makeup on the go. I also found the little instruction booklet really useful, as I wasn’t sure where to put each shadow at first to get a smoky effect.
Best for: All-in-one kit
LANCOME, OMBRE ABSOLUE PALETTE, £31 (www.lancome.co.uk)
What they say: The palette comes with three precision, easy to use applicators to create many different make-up looks - from the most natural to the most dramatic.
The Results: I was thrilled to be handed this palette – it looks incredibly classy, with sleek, classic packaging. Used individually, the colours are quite subtle – so it’s great if you want a toned-down smoky look for the office. For a more dramatic look on a night out, the colours can be blended together. I used the white shadow as a highlighter under my brow, which looked really striking. The palette comes with a big clear mirror and lots of brush applicators, which is great if you want to mix and match the colours. The powder goes on smoothly, but I had to reapply the colour a few times throughout the night – but on the plus side, the compact is small enough to carry out in a clutch bag. I loved the touch of shimmer, making the palette perfect for a glamorous night out.
Best for: Day to night
M&S AUTOGRAPH QUAD EYESHADOW, £9.50 (www.marksandspencer.com)
What they say: Beautifully presented in sleek and stylish packaging, the Autograph range encompasses all the latest modern colours.
The Results: I have sensitive eyes and have always wanted to try smoky eye shadows, but have been concerned that my eyes would react. When I was given this eye-quad the first thing I noticed was that it was hypo-allergenic, so I felt comfortable giving it a go. I wore the shadows for an entire night and my eyes felt absolutely fine - so this is obviously a good range for me to invest in. The compact is stunning and comes with a generous amount of shadow, so it’s a great price and will last a long time. I was disappointed it didn’t come with a brush, but as its quite affordable I don’t mind treating myself to a nice brush to go with it. The colours were beautiful - I especially liked the dark black shade, which I applied on top of my liner so my eyes had great definition.
Best for: Sensitive eyes
Spa Review: THE DORCHESTER SPA, MAYFAIR (31.12.09)
Location: The Dorchester, Park Lane, Mayfair, London. 020 7629 8888. www.thedorchester.com
Facilities: For a hotel with so many A-list patrons, you expect somewhere exceptional where they come to pamper - and the Spa at the Dorchester does not disappoint. Even the lobby is incredible– complete with a huge crystal chandler, an arrangement of single-stem orchids, and glittering silver railings. There is no pool – please, we don’t do splashing and paddling here - but there is a huge steam room, themed shower, and a spa café to enjoy light lunches. There is also the most adorable cream and pink Spatisserie, which serves afternoon tea in teeny-tiny portions. Afterwards, you can indulge in one of the many treatments, which read like a roll-call of the hottest names in beauty, from top facialist Vaishaly, to Kerstin Florian, to Aromatherapy Associates.
Ambience: It. Is. Amazing. You cannot help but feel special from the moment you walk through the door. The focus on luxury is remarkable - from the mother-of-pearl-effect lockers, to the cream leather-seated nail bar complete with wall/cabinet of Essie nail varnishes spot-lit like jewels - even the locker key is a little pearl bracelet for goodness sake. This is spa-ing A-list style. As I chilled in the midnight blue relaxation room – which, incidentally, looks more like an exclusive members club (only the guests wear bathrobes) - I kept peeping over my Vogue in case Cheryl Cole sauntered in, that’s how glitzy it is. But the staff are friendly and very professional.
Treatments Tested: The Signature Massage, £145 for 1 hour 25 minutes.
This treatment began with hot towels on my feet, which always feels delicious, followed by an incredibly intensive yet soothing massage on my back using aromatherapy oils and heated stones. The therapist asked me beforehand if there were any areas to concentrate on and I specified my neck and shoulders and she really got to work on tackling the knots, using the stones to go deep into the muscle. Next she moved onto my legs, working away at the backs of my thighs, moving on to my arms and finally my face. I felt totally relaxed and my back was knot-free for the first time in months. I didn’t have the soothing scalp massage however, but I think that was as a result of the sheer number of knots in my back. Afterwards I was given a delicious fresh juice and tiny sesame seed biscuit – as befitting A-list appetites – and relaxed in the heavenly relaxation room.
Breaking News: LUSH SPA LAUNCHES SIGNATURE FACIAL (31.12.09)
Ethical favourite LUSH caused a flurry of excitement amongst beauty fans earlier this year when they opened their first spa - and now the introduction of a signature facial, The Validation Facial, is sure to set pulses racing further!
Although best known for their soaps and bath ballistics, LUSH’s skincare range offers impressive results at reasonable prices, with products ranging from a cleansing balm, to lip-balms, and moisturisers. If you are yet to discover the range, the new facial provides the perfect excuse to try out the products.
The Validation Facial is designed to indulge not only the body, but also the mind. The idea behind the treatment is that products can have a physical effect, treating specific skincare concerns such as dehydration or signs of aging - but if you’re feeling uplifted and more confident within yourself, then you will truly glow, similar to the feeling of being in love!
Carefully-selected details are what sets a luxurious treatment apart from an average one. LUSH understands the importance of these “added extras” and have worked with Lady Helen, renowned behavioural therapist, in creating the facial and incorporated aspects to boost self-confidence. Every element of the facial has been considered - from specially composed music by Simon Emmerson, to confidence-boosting words and phrases spoken throughout to the blend of essential oils. There are even elements of the Alexander Technique, so that you leave physically walking taller and holding yourself better.
The treatment begins with a consultation, during which the therapist determines your skincare requirements as well as how you hope to feel within yourself. The therapist will take you around the fresh skincare section of the shop to select appropriate products - thereby incorporating a “personal shopping” experience into the treatment! Moving down to the cosy therapy room, there are quirky touches to make the facial an unforgettable experience, taking you on a surreal journey of self-discovery.
The Validation Facial costs £75 for one hour, plus consultation time). Call 020 7376 8348.
Blog: EMMA WEEDALL, A THERAPIST FROM AMARYA – THE UK’S FIRST CERTIFIED ORGANIC BEAUTY SHOP – GIVES TOP TIPS FOR GETTING OUR BODIES AND COMPLEXIONS READY FOR NEW YEAR’S EVE (31.12.09)
New Year’s Eve is upon us - and we’re expected to look glamorous, despite the last few weeks of late nights and over-consumption of party food and mulled wine. Here a few tips on how to survive the night and come out the other side looking wonderful.
Parties mean party dresses!! That’s right - you’ve been happily hiding away in your trousers, boots and polo necks and suddenly it’s time to get out your legs, and uncover your arms. That’s when the problems start… Your skin has been neglected, it’s dry and flaky and definitely not going to make you look like a goddess. All is not lost though - the first thing you need to do is rid your skin of those flaky cells with a good body brush before your shower. Starting at your feet, work upwards in small circular movements in towards the heart. Once you are in the shower, use a good body exfoliator - I’d recommend Laveré’s Active Body Scrub, as it not only smells lovely with a fresh scent of lemons, but it also contains a high level of oil so your skin is left feeling silky-soft and looking glowing. If that isn’t enough to tempt you, then an added bonus is that massaging this scrub into the thigh area whilst showering can also help to reduce cellulite. Complete the transformation with a beautiful body balm from Planet Botanicals - rich in fair trade East African Shea Butter, this balm has a lovely light consistency that hydrates and nourishes the skin.
With so much going on over the Christmas period, you may have missed out on vital beauty sleep, which can leave your skin looking tired and dull. This can be combated with three essential beauty products. Start with a weekly exfoliation to rid the skin of the dead cells and pollution, allowing the new and healthy skin underneath to shine through. Secondly, get your hands on a good moisturiser - my favourite for a weary complexion is La Claree Oliv’ Super Antioxidant Treatment, which moisturises and protects the skin whilst leaving a dewy glow for a healthy looking appearance. The third item that is a must-have during the party season is an eye-cream to hide the fact that you’ve had one too many late nights. Dr.Hauschka Eye Countour Day Balm can be used each morning to combat the puffiness and help to restore the skin’s elasticity. A top tip for eye creams is to keep them in the refrigerator; this means that you’re getting an instant result when applied.
If the party season all becomes too much, why not put your feet up and treat yourself to a relaxing facial - after all the partying, preparations, and shopping, you deserve it!

TRIED & TESTED: BODY SHIMMERS (18.12.09)
Treat yourself to a little glitz this festive season. We’ve put six Body Shimmers to the test…
DIOR SELFTAN SHIMMERING GLOW FOR FACE AND BODY, £23.50 (www.dior.co.uk)
What they say: Perfect for anyone who wants an extra touch of shimmer on the contours of the skin, these two products (for the face and body) contain iridescent micro-particles and moisturising agents. Their tinted, gel-like texture allows precise targeting of application.
The Results: I am a fake tan queen – and a bit of cold weather will not stop me showing my pins this winter. So when this landed on my doormat I squealed with delight – tan and shimmer in one package. Heaven. The product can be used to add a bit of colour to a specific body part (for example, face or chest) or it can be liberally applied all over. I noticed the shimmer from the moment I applied it, but the tan itself takes a while to develop. I applied it before a big night out – and every time the light caught the shimmer it made my (newly tanned) skin look even more gorgeous. I’ve used this three times now and it never fails to make me feel glamorous.
Best for: A big night out
MAC STROBE LOTION, £20 (www.maccosmetics.co.uk)
What they say: Blending soft focus diffusers with iridescent pigments, this ultra-fluid strobe formula produces a soft radiant light on the skin, reducing the appearance of skin imperfections by providing a natural looking shimmer.
The Results: This pump-action tube easily fits into a handbag and has a twist-shut lid, so I didn’t have to worry about it oozing all over the contents of my handbag. I applied the thin lotion to my whole face because, it promised to reduce bags and spots. My skin appeared much smoother and seemed to glow with a subtle shimmer – I was worried about looking like I was off to a disco, but the result was very natural. My complexion appeared instantly brighter and I felt more confident. After a hard day at work, I was thrilled to find that my face still looked fresh, with a shimmering glow.
Best for: Pre-makeup preparation
ESTEE LAUDER SIGNATURE 5-TONE SHIMMER POWDER, £28 (www.esteelauder.co.uk)
What they say: This compact has a unique wave-like tablet design of five beautifully sheer, iridescent shades combined in one luxurious, signature navy blue compact. Each of the two powders’ luxurious, silky shades can be used alone on eyes and cheeks for precise colour and highlighting or can be blended together for a soft, luminous glow on face, shoulders and décolletage.
The Results: This gorgeous navy compact looks classic and expensive. I tend to avoid using shimmer on my face, in favour of matt colours. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that rather than enlarging my pores, these silky tones made my face appear brighter. I used the lightest of colours on my eyelids, which made me look wide-awake. I also lightly dusted this shimmer onto my chest, which gave me a subtle warm glow. It’s small enough to fit in my makeup bag, which made it easy to retouch throughout the day. This compact is great value for money and it’ll definitely be a staple in my makeup bag from now on.
Best for: On-the-go use
BOBBI BROWN SHIMMER BRICK COMPACT, £29 (www.bobbibrown.co.uk)
What they say: This compact features five different shades of luxe, pure pearl pigments in a sleek, square compact. For a shimmering glow, run the Face Blender Brush across all the shades, then lightly dust forehead, cheeks and nose.
The Results: I’m a big fan of Bobbi Brown and this classic, sleek black shimmer compact definitely didn’t disappoint. The compact contains five colours, which all boast a high content of shimmer - and it only took one sweep for me to notice a big difference when I glanced in the mirror. For an all- over glow, I mixed all the colours together with my blusher brush for use on my chest and arms. I also used the colours separately as eye shadow – the shimmer looked much stronger when I did this and gave a great brightening effect. I strongly recommend it!
Best for: Quick to use
GUERLAIN ECLAT IMPERIAL SUBLIME RADIANT POWDER, £47.50 (www.houseoffraser.co.uk)
What they say: Rediscover the timeless and most sensuous gesture of applying powder like perfume. More than a luxurious accessory, this is the genuine secret to a perfect complexion. This is a delicate mist of glitter, to subtly enhance and illuminate shoulders, arms, back, décolleté and hair.
The Results: Put this product on your Christmas Wish List!. The packaging is stunning – the bottle is finely decorated with screen-printed lace and also boasts a long black tassel atomizer. It looks fantastic on my dressing table. The shimmer powder itself didn’t disappoint - as I sprayed, a light mist of glitter covered the area that I was aiming for. The spray is quite strong, so it’s difficult to focus on one particular area – but it’s perfect for covering décolletage or arms. For an extra glamorous look, I even sprayed the shimmer lightly over my hair. The product stayed put all night, so I think the bottle will last a long time – making it good value for money.
Best for: Sheer glamour
DOLCE AND GABBANA ROSE THE ONE SHIMMER POWDER, £34 (Department Stores Nationwide)
What they say: Rose the One Shimmer Powder bestows a subtly pearlescent, rosy veil of fragrance to accentuate a woman’s most enticing features. Shoulders, limbs, and décolleté are lent a fetching radiance.
The Results: The pot smelt delicious as I was opening the lid. I wanted to impress at my work Christmas Party so I used a little of this shimmer on my brow bone – applied with my fingertips. I felt radiant and had so many compliments that on my next night out I covered my chest and arms with it. The shimmer is quite subtle, but it shows up when light shines onto skin. Undoubtedly the best part of this gorgeous shimmer is the smell - it’s like buying two fantastic products for the price of one!
Best for: Amazing smell
Spa Review: MALVERN SPA (18.12.09)
Location: Malvern Spa, Grovewood Road, Malvern, Worcestershire, WR14 1GD. 01684 898 290. www.themalvernspa.com
Facilities: The approach to Malvern Spa isn’t quite what you’d expect... As you drive towards the picturesque Malvern Hills, you are met by a large industrial estate – the location that Malvern Spa shares with a huge Marks & Spencer, Pet World, and Morrisons. However, the exterior isn’t ugly by any means – and once inside, the decor is contemporary, stylish, and very luxurious. The spa itself boasts impressive facilities, which are positioned around a large hydrotherapy pool. Loungers surrounding the pool make the perfect base for catching up with friends or flicking through some magazines – and you can also enjoy unlimited access to a Salt Grotto, Crystal Steam Room, Herb Sauna, Kelo Sauna and Foot Spa. On a winter’s day, you must find the time to swim to the section of the pool based outside – the water feels wonderfully warm and the setting is stunning, with steam rising from the surface into the cold air above. Back inside, the brave can try out the plunging ice bucket – whilst the less adventurous can scoop handfuls of ice and rub it over skin. Indulgent EPSA treatments are carried out in neutrally-decorated rooms, with a soundtrack of serene music and a backdrop of flickering candles. And after all that relaxing, you can retreat to ultra-comfortable bedrooms – with modern fittings, huge indulgent bath tubs, and beds with the thickest, warmest duvets we have ever had the pleasure to sleep underneath. For dinner, head back downstairs to enjoy dishes that are both healthy and utterly delicious – we enjoyed the food so much that it rivalled the spa treatments, and that’s really is saying something…
Ambience: Looking for the perfect spa break for a group of friends? Malvern Spa would be the perfect choice. There’s no pressure to keep quiet while spending time here and large groups are welcomed as warmly as smaller groups and couples. On the other hand, if you want to get some peace and quiet, the treatment rooms are fabulously serene – and the bedrooms are just footsteps away from the spa. Whoever you choose to take along, you will leave feeling wonderfully refreshed, relaxed, and renewed.
Treatment Tested: ESPA Stress Relieving Massage, £60 for 60 minutes. On entering the treatment room, my therapist asked me to sniff two different body oils and to choose my favourite. I went for the first – a relaxing lavender blend. She then asked which pressure I would prefer – a welcome question, as I hate to leave the treatment bed feeling like nothing has happened. The indulgent hour-long massage worked on my legs, arms, feet, hands, back, neck, and shoulders – and finally moved onto my scalp, where she swapped the massage oil for ESPA’s famous Pink Hair and Scalp Mud. I left the treatment room feeling hugely relaxed and swathed in velvety-body oil. After an hour, I washed the mud out of my hair, and my locks were impressively glossy and silky – a huge, unexpected bonus.
Day Spa rates start at £65 per person, whilst residential packages start at just £95 per person. Visit www.themalvernspa.com for more information.
Blog: OUR GROOMING EDITOR - JAMES YORK – REVIEWS STOCKING FILLERS FOR THE BOYS FROM LUSH (18.12.09)
If you’re looking for presents to flesh out your gift portfolio for the males of your clan, grooming products are the natural solution. Thankfully, LUSH - the organically marvellous and generally lovely brand - has a range of products for men that fit the bill. Prior forays into Lush have been to gather strange floral smelling cosmetic trinkets for the sister or mother, rarely for products appropriate for the ‘man shelf’. That is set to change, for time has been spent testing and an impression has been made. Constructively, perhaps the packaging and dialogue need refining for the male consumer. More confident use would be assured with a smattering more product direction, we don’t tend to go for verbal frills. Each product could also be differentiated a little more - it’s difficult to see which pot is which at first glance. These products are of a fine quality and have obviously been made with care and the consideration at their core, which has to be commended. In LUSH, he’ll find fantastic ingredients that Heston Blumenthal would serve with a roast and ballistics that bear no warheads. He’ll be impressed to boot - just don’t let him drink too much sherry and eat any of them by accident.
Ocean Salt Facial Scrub, £5.96
It looks like friendly blue humus and smells immense. Thick with a fruity base of coconut laced with lime and grapefruit, it even has vodka in it to wake the face. Sea salt adds that exfoliating element that us chaps all too often forget about. Blackheads beware - this is one interesting face scrub.
Cosmetic Lad cream, £9.84
Odds on, he’ll not have a clue what this product is supposed to do for him at first glance. You’ll be able to tell him it’s a super all-in-one magic cream. This cream can do everything, it’s almost mind boggling. It is moisturiser, after sun, scalp saviour and shaving cream. Cosmetic lad is effectively the Inspector Gadget of the grooming fraternity. Witness some slightly caveman-like mistrust and prodding at the pot for the first few moments until the moment of acceptance arrives. Made from everything good; there’s a hint of honey; a dash of sandalwood oil and a smattering of Aloe Vera gel (just don’t mention the marigold). We’re going to need a bigger pot.
T for Toes Powder, £5.87
To most men, feet are a radioactive quarantined ‘no-go’ zone. We look on with a mixture of disgust and confusion as women pour peppermint based product over there feet by the litre. Function over form is written in our DNA perhaps. Sadly, because of this, most men do not take the best care of their hooves and this can only be bad for those subjected to them. If he plays sport, or generally just doesn’t seem to realise that he could up his foot hygiene game, stick this one in his stocking. A few sprinkles in his shoes at every opportunity; a handful spread over post match soles should do the trick and prevent feet like a Himalayan mountain goat.
Rehab Shampoo, £4.43
There are a number of rock star celebs that could do with a dollop of this concoction. It’s naturally coloured, which makes the man user believe it is low in chemicals and good for his barnet. Of course, chemicals could be irrationally regarded as a likely catalyst to his genetic baldness. It’s got low viscosity and mixes easily with hair to foam up well. There is nothing worse than a man shampoo that gets absorbed by hair, we want foam. A simple rinse out and the scalp has been treated with enzymes, seaweed and an assortment of juices from fruits that Captain Cook likely discovered, way back when.
Avobath – Bath Ballistic, £2.81
Men do not seem to bath anymore, we shower. Communal baths are gone from the sports changing rooms and the convenience of a quick process all too apparent. It’s just boring waiting for the bath to run. We get in; turn into a prune and often endure our legs poking out for lack of room. With a bath ballistic, this changes slightly. For if he casts his mind back, there is nothing more satisfying than a bath after a day of cold and wet sport. It’s the excuse to try it again or suggest it to the other half. Plus, if you chuck in the anticipation of this thing whirling round like lithium, there is entertainment too (small things amuse the small minded). Disappointingly though, this was not shaped like a missile and failed to arc impressively into the filled bath with a lingering mushroom cloud. There were some incredibly green scenes, a giant aspirin unleashed. Well done Lush, the Avocado, olive oil and lemongrass generate a fragrant fizz for his return to the bath, making the water worthy for its long awaited occupant(s).
All products can be purchased at LUSH stores nationwide or by visiting www.lush.co.uk

Breaking News: BALMAIN’S LATEST FRAGRANCE ‘AMBRE GRIS’ LAUNCHES EXCLUSIVELY AT SELFRIDGES (18.12.09)
Faithful to its fashion credentials, Balmain’s latest fragrance – Ambre Gris – is a dazzling and seriously luxurious blend of rich ingredients. It works perfectly for the festive season, so we’re excited to report that the addictive scent has launched exclusively at Selfridges until June. Combining opulence and edgy chic, the scent plays homage to the noble and mysterious qualities of ambergris – a sweet, earthy substance used traditionally in the production of perfume. The fragrance combines top notes of pink pepper, cinnamon, bergamot and marigold, with heart notes of myrrh, davana, tuberose, immortelle, and base notes of ambergris, benzoin, guaiacum wood, and white musk. The result is spicy and wonderfully unique. Reflective of Balmain fashion, the bottle is ultra-stylish – with a classic design and a gold, shimmering, spherical lid. It would make a fabulous addition to any dressing table – and a welcome gift this Christmas. Ambre Gris is available at Selfridges until June 2010, costing £47 for 40ml, £69 for 75ml, £87 for 100ml, and £36 for 200ml Body Lotion.
Tried & Tested: GLISTENING HAIR PRODUCTS (11.12.09)
Forget tinsel on your tree, add a shimmer to party locks with our pick of the best Glistening Hair Finishing Products.
ORIBE 24K GOLD POMADE £46 for 50ml (www.spacenk.co.uk)
What they say: An innovative styling product that delivers such a lustrous sparkle and rich gold glossy sheen, it could be called makeup for your hair. This decadent treatment moisturises, softens and protects hair while delivering an intense, metallic gold finish with added crushed gold minerals.
The Results: I loved the packaging – it screams silver screen glamour and looked great on my dressing table. Before opening the tub, I imagined a cream-style pomade shot through with gold flecks, but was pleasantly surprised when I opened the jar to reveal a highly pigmented, thick, golden balm that was very luxurious indeed! Admittedly, the price tag reflects this, but the jar-style packaging means that it is easy to control how much you apply, so there is little waste. I have highlighted blonde hair, which can sometimes look a little one-dimensional, but this product really brought it to life. I was a little concerned that the particles would look glittery and immature, but if anything, I think it’s probably too subtle to make the price justifiable for anyone with dark hair, although it worked well on my shade and the gloss was surprisingly grown-up.
Best for: Blondes
LEE STAFFORD BLING SPARKLE SPRAY £5.99 for 200ml (Boots nationwide)
What they say: Dazzling Sparkle Spray contains multi-tone glitter to make you shine like a star. Quick and easy to use, for instant glitz, shake well and spray all over hair, leaving to dry naturally. Sparkle Spray ensures that hair will shine like a diamond and smell great for hours and hours.
The Results: I was pretty nervous about trying a Sparkle Spray - it brought back memories of hideous hair disasters from my early teens when my beauty mantra was “the more glitter, the better”. However, when I tried Lee Stafford’s Bling Sparkle Spray, I was pleasantly surprised. The effect is very subtle, with multi-tonal micro-glitter particles adding a glimmer that catches the light beautifully. It also added a degree of hold, so there was no need to double up with hairspray as well. The packaging is easy to use – I simply spritzed all over my hair as I would use a hairspray. Finally, I love the girly pink can – it’s the perfect product to use before heading out for cocktails with my friends.
Best for: Party girls
BUMBLE & BUMBLE Bb BIG SHINE £27.50 for 125ml (0207 247 5656)
What they say: Brilliant glimmer. Deepest dimension. Sultry movement. This versatile hi-sheen texturizer makes the degrees of shimmer endless. It adds sophisticated polish, loosens up a style that looks too done or makes hair glisten like new. New ultra-fine mist technology allows for feather-light finishing and keeps even the finest hair types from falling flat.
The Results: I love beauty products, but hair products rarely get me excited. No matter what I try or how much of my hard-earned cash I part with, there’s simply no helping my mop and good hair days only come once in a blue moon. However, I’ve heard good things about Bumble & Bumble’s products, so when I was asked to trial Bb Big Shine, I accepted with high hopes. To make it a fair test, I followed my usual hair routine, simply adding this as a finishing product. Wow! What a difference! The spray formula is easy to use, particularly as I followed the tip of spraying it onto my hands and then working through my hair for better control. It added mirror-like shine, tamed my frizz and held my style in place for hours. The spray can also be used on lazy days to refresh a style. It is now firmly positioned on my desert island list of can’t live without items... I’m hooked.
Best for: Bad hair days.
MOP GLISTEN SHINE DROPS £11.45 for 50ml (www.beautyexpert.co.uk)
What they say: Glistening drops of shine-enhancing serum that adds dazzling reflection and silkiness to low-lustre hair. Organic oatstraw, horsetail and aloe are three shining examples of the natural ingredients that achieve such stunning results.
The Results: Over the past year or so, I’ve been increasingly fascinated by the benefits of “green” beauty products and have vowed to switch to natural options where possible. It’s not always easy to find alternatives which offer satisfactory results and one area that I’ve particularly struggled with is haircare so I was intrigued to trial MOP Glisten Shine Drops. I really liked that the packaging is unexpectedly sleek rather than the stereotype of an eco brand. It’s also functional as it is easy to control how many drops to dispense into hands before working through hair. As the name suggests, I was expecting a hi-shine effect but the final result was far more subtle. The drops tamed my frizz, with the effects lasting all day. This meant that my hair was sleeker, with the style defined and naturally caught the light. I’d say these are good for anyone looking for a natural effect. They are ideal for daily use and what’s more, you only need a few drops at a time so the bottle is likely to last and last- great value for money!
Best for: Natural choice
JAMES BROWN SCANDALOUS SEDUCTIVE SHIMMER SERUM £5.99 for 50ml (www.boots.com)
What they say: A lightweight serum containing kukui nut oil for additional shine. Contains a high level of the signature Scandalous fragrance and odour neutraliser- the perfect partner in crime for wild nights out.
The Results: I had high expectations of this product from Kate Moss’ best-friend’s signature range. The packaging and price point are spot-on, making it an easy way to buy into a part of the Primrose Hill crowd’s lifestyle. It would fit into a large clutch or handbag, making it ideal for use on-the-go and I certainly wouldn’t feel embarrassed to refresh my hair with it on a night out if needed. Unusually for a serum, the product has a spray dispenser. Whilst this makes it easy to use, particularly when out and about, I found it took a little time to become accustomed to controlling it for the desired amount. A little goes a long way- the oil base works well for adding a hi-shine effect and I also felt that my hair was being nourished, however, if over-applied, my fine hair could easily look greasy. The serum really highlighted the natural tones in my hair and gave a smooth, movie-star effect to my style. However, my favourite aspect of this product was the fragrance - it’s strong, sultry, and the ideal complement to a big night out.
Best for: Fragrance
NUXE HULIE PRODIGIEUSE OR £20.55 for 50ml (www.spacenk.co.uk)
What they say: NUXE Huile Prodigieuse Or is a multi-usage dry oil that gives a golden shimmer to your face, body and hair. The oil leaves your face and body soft and velvety, whilst hair becomes supple, glossy and full of volume. Thanks to its small golden particles, it leaves a subtle yet sexy golden sheen.
The Results: I’ve read about this product, but didn’t realise it could be used on hair. The oil is surprisingly lightweight and features a high density of gold particles – I needed to shake the bottle before use to distribute them evenly through the oil. Applying oil to hair may seem a little scary at first, but I’ve been using hot oil treatments for years to nourish and condition my hair. I loved that this had the added benefit of nourishing as well as its primary use of adding shimmer. The oil works on two levels to add gloss to hair – firstly, the oil base naturally settles frizz to improve light reflection, whilst secondly, shimmer particles catch the light for subtle sparkle. As the gold particles are small, the effect remains glamorous and works well on all shades of hair. I can’t wait to try this as a body oil next- the scent is incredible so I’m looking forward to using it all over! The fact that it is multi-usage definitely makes the price justifiable in my opinion and it would also make an ideal travel companion.
Best for: Multi-tasking
Blog: TEJ SAMANI – A CONGNITIVE BEHAVIOURAL CONSULTANT, BASED IN HARLEY STREET – GIVES SOME TIPS ON DEALING WITH STRESS THIS CHRISTMAS (11.12.09)
I am a Harley Street based cognitive behavioural consultant. I am the managing director and head coach of The TS-Elite Group, The Unlearning Foundation and Alpha Technologies. I work with men and women from all walks of life; ranging from sportsmen and women across a variety of disciplines to businessmen and women aiming to reach their full potential and stay ahead of the curve in a perilous job market.
My key strategy is ‘play to win’ and I also apply this to everyday emotional life. I work with a number of women to help them overcome anxiety, stress and sleeping disorders. My cognitive and psychological therapy is about the empowerment of women; releasing your full potential and harnessing otherwise negative forces in your life.
When it comes to Christmas, a lot of my patients find that ‘cheer’ is often a figment of the imagination when you consider how much pressure we put ourselves under in the lead up to the big day. Not only do you physically struggle to get everything done, but your body can react negatively to stress, which in turn can leave you looking frazzled and less than your best!
Whenever you are stressed your body releases a chemical called cortisol - otherwise known as the ‘stress hormone’. This not only weakens your immune system, by causing your blood pressure and sugar levels to increase, but also accelerates the depletion of collagen. Therefore when you finally relax on Christmas day you are more likely to fall ill and less look glamorous than the special occasion demands!
Prior to Christmas there is a long list of things that need doing: presents, food, parties to arrange, who to invite (and in some cases, who not to invite!) in-laws to cope with etc. It’s very easy to feel like you have a million things to do – and you may well have a million things to do!
Whenever you feel overwhelmed, remember to put your focus on the actual PROCESS that you need to take to get everything done. You are placing too much of your attention on the OUTCOME and not how you’re going to get there. So, make a list (check it twice), mentally walk yourself through the day step-by-step, and be realistic about your targets.
By focusing on the actual step-by-step PROCESS you need to take to get things done over Christmas, you will be able to do and manage a lot more. This will automatically prevent you from feeling overwhelmed and thus out of control. Instead, you will feel balanced, centred, happy and full of energy – all the secret ingredients to looking and feeling like a Christmas cracker!

Treatment Review: BRAZILIAN BOTOX FOR LOCKS, NEVILLE HAIR & BEAUTY (11.12.09)
What it promises: Created by Rosa Burch, this long lasting blow-dry from Brazil promises to banish frizz for good. Rosa’s sweet vanilla and chocolate-scented formula takes damaged, unruly, frizzy hair and turns it into permanently sleek and manageable hair – resulting in a “just blow dried” look for up to four months.
What happens: On arriving at Neville Hair & Beauty, I was met by Rosa - the creator of the treatment – who explained exactly what I should expect during the procedure. She explained that ‘The Brazilian Botox for Locks’ is suitable for any hair type, but is most effective on damaged, over-processed, or frizzy hair like mine. With the initial consultation out of the way, Rosa took me over to the washbasins and my hair was given a thorough shampoo - but not conditioned, as this would have effected the treatment. With my squeaky-clean hair ready, Rosa blow-dried the locks until they were totally dry. Next, she applied her magic formula over my whole head and then, once she has made sure that no stray hairs had escaped the magic potion, she cracked out the hair-dryer and began the second blow-dry, without washing the product off. The final stage of the procedure involved Rosa painstakingly going over each and every section of my hair with straightening irons to seal in the product. With the hair now looking poker straight, Rosa spun me round in the chair to face the mirror and told me that she had finished. I couldn’t believe the transformation - my hair looked straight, shiny and healthy. Before I skipped out the salon to show off my new locks, Rosa gave me some final aftercare advice. I was told not to wash my hair for the next 48-hours to allow the treatment to properly develop and also to only use conditioner on the ends of my hair. Finally, I was assured that I could now banish my irons and mass of frizz-control hair products to the back of the bathroom cabinet.
Results: I was thrilled with the finished results. My hair is now soft and straight, with no effort whatsoever. I can simply rough blow-dry my hair or leave to dry naturally. Rosa is a genius and I was very impressed with the whole ‘Botox for Locks’ experience. I would highly recommend this treatment to anyone who has high-maintenance, out-of-control hair – or for anyone who simply wants to feel like they have just stepped out of a salon on a daily basis. It is pricey but trust me, once you have experienced it for yourself you will think it is worth every penny.
Price: Prices from £200 - it depends on hair length, thickness, and amount of hair.

Breaking News: HANDBAG INSURANCE LAUNCHES – WITH COVER FOR MAKEUP AND PERFUME! (11.12.09)
There are few things that could be more stressful than the awful prospect of your handbag being stolen or lost. So when we heard that a company had launched handbag insurance this week, our ears pricked up – and we were even more interested when we learnt that the insurance covered us for loss of makeup and perfume!
Boutique Handbag Insurance has just launched at www.insurance4everyone.co.uk. Unlike other handbag insurance products, Boutique covers ‘any bag’ – the handbag you are carrying at the time of the loss, rather than a specific pre-notified bag. Better still, it can cost as little as £5 per month, which can be collected by direct debit so it’s completely hassle-free.
"We understand that women use a variety of different bags, depending on their daily needs," explains Geoff Hall, at insurance4everyone.co.uk. "Boutique is designed to cover any one bag the policyholder uses at a time; it's simple, quick to buy and flexible. We know that these bags can cost a lot and they're packed with cosmetics and gadgets, which modern British women can't live without. We're here to cover against the worse case scenarios."
Makeup junkies will be relieved to hear that the insurance covers loss of cosmetics (up to £100) and loss of perfume (up to £100).
Boutique has two optional levels of cover, £800 or £1,000 and can be purchased online quickly and easily at www.insurance4everyone.co.uk.

The light blue, glittery powder comes with a soft powder puff for easy appliance – and it leaves skin feeling incredibly soft and velvety.
5. Jo Malone Vanilla & Anise Cologne, £32 (www.jomalone.co.uk). Treat somebody special to Jo Malone’s latest launch – a warming and uplifting blend of vanilla orchid, anise, vetiver, amber, and clove. It isn’t what you expect from a vanilla scent – it is not at all sickly sweet or synthetic – and we can guarantee that the lucky recipient will give it pride of place on her dressing table.
MAKEUP GIFTS
If she likes to get creative with her makeup, Christmas is the perfect time to add to her collection. This year, the brands haven’t disappointed, with a tempting array of palettes and innovative new launches. Take your pick from the selection below…
1. Bobbi Brown Earth Metal Lip & Eye Palette, £48 (www.bobbibrown.co.uk). This stunning palette is one of the highlights of Bobbi Brown’s new Chrome Collection, which has launched onto counters for Christmas. The sleek compact contains six exclusive high-shimmer eye shadows, four exclusive creamy lip colours, a mini eye shadow brush, a mini lip brush, and a mirror. It’s small enough to fit into any makeup bag, yet packed full of everything she’ll need for the festive season and beyond.
2. MAC Mystic Cool Eye Shadows Kit, £29.50 (www.maccosmetics.co.uk). Shopping for a self-confessed beauty junkie? Head straight to MAC Cosmetics. Their Christmas collection of Lip, Eye, and Face Kits are packaged in fun, colourful palettes, with a choice of different colour and product combinations. Our favourite is the Mystic Cool Eye Shadows Kit – a fabulous selection of winter-wonderland shades to compliment her look on the coldest, crispest days.
3. Maybelline Pulse Perfection Mascara, £14.99 (Boots Nationwide). When it comes to mascara, we tend to stick to what we know – so Christmas is the perfect time to shake her out of her comfort zone with one of 2009’s most exciting beauty launches. Maybelline’s Pulse Perfecting Vibrating Mascara might seem like a gimmick, but we’ve tried it, and we promise that it really works! As it vibrates, lashes are separated, thickened, and extended. Go for Vibrant Black for this season’s glamorous smoky-eyed look.
4. Sisley Palette Phyto Star Eyes, £54.50 (0207 5916380). If she prefers her makeup to be sophisticated and grown-up, treat her to Sisley’s stunning Phyto Star Eyes Palette. The sleek silver packaging flips open to reveal four wearable, delicately-shimmering eye colours, an applicator, and a vertical mirror for ease of application. It will last well beyond the festive season, with colours that are both suitable for day and night-wear.
5. Boots No.7 Glitter Eyeliner, £9 (Boots Nationwide). Glitter Eyeliners are launched every year, but few have had the staying power or precision brush to make them a success – until now, that is. This season, No.7 has launched a collection of Glittering Eyeliners in flattering, festive shades. We’ve tried them and they are incredibly easy to apply and stay put all night. Buy them in bulk and throw them into the gift bags of all your friends and family – they will certainly thank you for it.
6. Chantecaille Les Petales Rêves de Rose, £28 (www.spacenk.co.uk). We wouldn’t usually encourage you to spend this much on a lipgloss – but when it looks like good, we find it a little hard to resist. The stunning gold compact would instantly smarten up any makeup bag – whilst the pink gloss will add a little festive glamour to any pout.

TRIED & TESTED: RADIANCE BOOSTERS (04.12.09)
Give skin a boost this festive season, with a radiance-boosting cream, lotion, serum, or oil.
CRYSTAL CLEAR ILLUMINATE, £60 (www.crystalclear.co.uk)
What they say: Illuminate tired, dull complexions with this unique formula. Your skin will look healthy and revitalised while any imperfections, such as uneven skin tone and brown spots, will be visibly diminished.
The Results: This lightweight, cooling cream left my face feeling unbelievably soft and silky. I liked the fruity scent too – it’s delicate, but uplifting. I hate wearing shimmer on my face, so I was pleased to see that the cream was glitter-free – but I must confess that I didn’t notice much difference when I first applied it. It was when I applied my makeup that I really noticed that I was wearing it – my foundation glided on and my complexion looked healthy and radiant. After a week of using it, my skin feels softer and smoother too.
Best for: Wearing under makeup
SANCTUARY RADIANCE BOOSTING FACIAL OIL, £13.99 (www.thesanctuary.co.uk)
What they say: A potent blend of natural oils created to rejuvenate, plump and brighten tired and stressed skin. Essential Oils of Frankincense and organic Rose help to rebalance and calm whilst organic Rosehip Seed Oil, Wheat Germ Oil and Jojoba help to promote skin radiance.
The Results: I’ve never tried a facial oil before – although I’ve got dry skin, I’ve always worried that they will feel heavy and greasy. I was pleased to discover that this oil had quite a light texture and I loved the scent of luxurious essential oils. I massaged it into my skin and the majority absorbed quickly, but a small layer did stay on top of the skin, which is what gave my complexion a lovely glow. It left my skin feeling very soft and I didn’t feel greasy– although I’d recommend starting with a small amount and working up. I definitely looked radiant, but I wouldn’t recommend this product to people with greasy or combination skin.
Best for: Dry skin
SISLEY RADIANT IMMEDIATE LIFT, £114 (0207 5916380)
What they say: Skin is luminous and uniform. Fine lines and wrinkles are refined and makeup has extended hold.
The Results: For me, radiance is all about looking smooth, youthful, and glowing! I would definitely recommend this product – the pearl-pink serum turns clear when you smooth it over the complexion and it’s lightweight, so you hardly know it’s there. I don’t know what the magic ingredient is, but my skin instantly looked radiant – my cheekbones caught the light and my lines and wrinkles appeared less pronounced. It’s a quick fix, as I had to reapply a couple of times during the day, but it would be perfect to get you through the hectic festive season looking like you’ve had lots of sleep – or for applying after a long-haul flight to fool people that you’ve been sitting in first-class!
Best for: Smoothing lines and wrinkles
DERMALOGICA CLEAN BRIGHTEN UP SPF15, £15 (0800 917 7147)
What they say: Hydrate and bright! This multi-tasking lotion with UV-shielding SPF contains a natural tint and shimmer to help keep skin looking even and fresh (never shiny) for an all-day glow.
The Results: My skin is prone to looking shiny during the day, so the idea of boosting the radiance is a bit scary, as I generally try my hardest to keep it looking matte! This cream has a pinky tone, which is lighter than my own skin, but it became clear as I applied it. It certainly seemed to even-out my complexion and helped to disguise the odd blemish. It was quite clever too – my cheekbones had a nice glow, but the areas that tend to get greasy, like my forehead remained matte. It’s convenient to use too – I simply used it in place of my usual moisturiser, as it has SPF15 too.
Best for: Problem, greasy or shiny complexions
MARKS & SPENCER REVIVAL RADIANCE COMPLEXION BALM, £9.50 (www.marksandspencer.com)
What they say: Give dull skin a boost, illuminate and enhance your complexion to look radiant with this balm. Immediate benefits from Siberian ginseng lift and tighten your skin, expression lines are visibly reduced giving a younger, more radiant appearance.
The Results: The packaging might not be glamorous, but the product inside really impressed me. I followed the instructions and applied the cream after my moisturiser in the morning. It had a thin texture and felt cooling as I applied it. I could instantly see that it had perked up my complexion, giving it a subtle glow. It was very natural – there’s no shimmer in the cream – but it made the light bounce off my cheekbones and definitely made my skin tone look more balanced. The best way to describe the effect is that it made me look like I’d had a good nights sleep – so I would highly recommend it for mornings when you feel a little worse for wear.
Best for: Perking up tired complexions
PHILOSOPHY DIVINE ILLUMINATION SKIN ILLUMINATING MOISTURISER, £68 (0870 990 8452)
What they say: Divine Illumination was created to transform the way skin looks and feels while addressing multiple ageing skin concerns such as loss of radiance, tone, firmness, suppleness, and hydration.
The Results: Wow – I have fallen in love with this product. The packaging is fabulous and the pot size is very generous. The cream itself is very luxurious –with a thick, rich texture. The only downside – and it’s a very small one – is that it has a slightly bitter scent. As soon as I had applied it, I noticed that my skin had a lovely glow. The best bit was that it evened out my skin tone – which is very pale, with a few acne scars. I’ve been using it for a week now and my skin has never felt softer. I love the way it instantly boots the radiance of my skin and makes me look lovely and glowing! I’d highly recommend it.
Best for: Evening out skin tone

Blog: SELFRIDGES’S BEAUTY DIRECTOR, DAVID WALKER SMITH, SHARES HIS FESTIVE PARTY BEAUTY SECRETS (04.12.09)
1. Make yourself up
Its all about metallics, glitter and shimmer for makeup this party season - and Bobbi Brown, Illamasqua, Dior and Mac do not disappoint. You will find the perfect shade of lipstick or glitter nail varnish to match your sequined outfit – bold and brash with staying power that lasts the night. Glitter is great for highlighting the eyes - put a little in the corner of your eye to catch the light. Illamasqua Primer and Trish McEvoy Primers are a must to keep the foundation looking smooth - it also helps the foundation to stay put throughout the night.
2. Gorgeous Skin
If you're going out and you want to look good, get your skin looking good first; prevention is better than cure! Keep your face looking fresh through December until the New Year by zapping any skin break-outs and blemishes caused by heavy party sessions. New beauty gadgets on the market are great for this including Talika (Facial Rejuvenation), Nutra Sonic (deep cleansing brush) and FSD (Facial Rejuvenation) - all exclusively available at Selfridges and designed to freshen, add radiance, rejuvenate and improve skin texture.
3. Party Prep
Well-groomed hair, nails and skin are a must in preparation for the party season. A treatment at the beginning of the festive season to take care of all your grooming needs is essential - ideally a one-stop-shop such as the ‘Zoom Groom’ treatment at Groom in Selfridges, which caters for all your key beauty requirements in one session and includes a facial, mini pedicure or mini manicure.
4. Silky Locks
Aveda offers a personal blend shampoo service, where you can choose your own colour and fragrance for your custom-blend shampoo. There is also a superb range of hair products from haircare connoisseurs Sebastian Professional at Selfridges to ensure your locks are silky smooth, such as the ‘Microweb Fiber’, which will create volume with natural movement resulting in a tousled relaxed look that will stay put throughout the night.
5. Manicured Nails
Nails should be perfectly manicured and glossed, with wintery deep berry colours or this season hottest catwalk colour, such as Chanel’s Jade or similar pistachio hues from Illamasqua and Mac. O.P.I is offering a 20min quick fix nail shape and lacquer service called the mini-cure, whilst men are not forgotten with its Gentlemen’s manicure, which includes a relaxing massage and nail buff.
6. Sexy Eyes
It is surprising how a little care and attention to your brows can instantly change the look of your face. Groom and Shu Uemura have a fantastic selection of false lashes, extra-long to widen the eyes, shorter to add volume, and natural lashes for a sultry look - perfect false lash applications from the dramatic to the outright glamourous.
7. Body Shimmer
Party makeup is not just about the face. Temple Spa has created the ‘Tah Dah’ party dress for the skin exclusively for Selfridges. This three in one treatment moisturises, fragrances and creates the perfect all-over shimmer effect– a great accompaniment to this seasons sparkling beauty look.
8. After Party
Pamper yourself with an at-home spa session of face-masks and cleansers. Suqqu are launching a refined flow stretch mask (3 sheets) in January which will provide an intensive moisturizing treatment. The mask will tighten the skin, sharpen the face and help the skin to re-hydrate. Trish McEvoy also has a beauty booster and serum in her range which contains high quantities of hyalauronic acid, perfect for adding moisture and a dewy glow to the skin. Guerlain Midnight secret is a miracle serum that transforms partied out skin back to a well rested youthful glow – 8 hours sleep in a bottle.
Treatment Review: NEAL’S YARD DAMASK ROSE RADIANCE BOOSTING FACIAL (04.12.09)
What it promises: Neal’s Yard is best known for their luxurious organic skincare, but the brand is now branching out into treatments at its London King’s Road Store. Perfect for dehydrated skin, this luxurious treatment promises to rehydrate and soothe skin, whilst helping to revive the complexion’s natural radiance. Using precious damask rose oil, the facial is designed to smooth the fine lines caused by dehydration and dryness.
What happens: I was surprised when I walked into Neal’s Yard – I was expecting to find a peaceful spa, but instead found myself standing in the middle of a bustling store. However, after being lead downstairs by my therapist, I discovered the treatment area – and I wasn’t at all disappointed. Downstairs, the ambience was calm, serene, and very relaxing. After climbing up onto the ultra-comfortable treatment bed, the facial began. My face was gently enveloped in lavender-infused steam to open up pores, which also helped me to unwind. The therapist then performed extractions – a little painful, but important nonetheless. The facial itself was deep and thorough – including cleansing, toning, exfoliation, and moisturising – with products chosen specifically for my skin type. At the end of the treatment, my therapist passed on a few after-thoughts and tips – for example, how to get rid of my genetic red broken veins – and by the way, it’s all about sunblock sunblock sunblock!
Results: When my therapist told me that the treatment would make my skin look “radiant” the cynical Londoner in me cringed – after all that’s what everyone and every treatment promises. But to my shock, not to mention delight, my skin actually DID look more radiant – and it still looks radiant, a whole week after my facial visit.
Price: £65 for 60 minutes

Feature: ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS….. (04.12.09)
With just a few weeks until the big day, we’ve asked six celebrities how they would spend the perfect Christmas - and what they will be wishing for when the clocks strike midnight on New Years Eve…
WE CHAT TO… MODEL ALICIA DOUVALL
My dream Christmas present would be a spa trip to the Banyan Tree, in Phuket, Thailand. The Banyan Spa is a luxury escape for rest and tranquility set in a resort of incredible natural beauty. It really is paradise on earth!
If I could spend Christmas anywhere, it would be the 'Sandy Lane' Hotel in Barbados. It is a treasured and stunning hideaway in the Caribbean visited by all sorts of royalty and celebrity guests.
My perfect Christmas would be spent with my beautiful daughter Destiny Douvall, my mum, and a man - preferably Simon Cowell!
I would be looking fantastic with a suitcase full of Versace dresses and bags, Christian Louboutin shoes, Gina sandals, Agent Provocateur lingerie and Heidi Klum bikinis.
My diet at the moment is 80% Raw Vegan, so this means I’ll be eating a lot of fruit and vegetables over Christmas and definitely no turkey! In addition, I’m no longer drinking alcohol, so I’ll be drinking mineral water - but seeing as it’s Christmas and a special occasion, I may treat myself to a glass of champagne.
On New Years Eve, I will be wishing for the health of all my family and a new romance in 2010. Although, I’ll also wish for a new Louis Vuitton handbag and a Chanel jacket - I love their classic style and also how handy and good value they are.
WE CHAT TO… FORMER MODEL, ACTRESS, AND PHOTOGRAPHER LINDA LUSARDI
I’d love to unwrap a new pair of UGG boots - I love them, they’re like wearing slippers! I’d also love some lighting equipment for my new photographic studio and lots of Molton Brown products. I get through a jar of hand wash every couple of weeks - I just love the smell. A holiday to somewhere hot after the long Pantomime season would be lovely too.
We will be spending Xmas day at my Mums. We are in "Snow White" Panto in Northampton so Xmas day is one of the few days we have off so Mums doing the cooking this year. I always eat more food if someone else has cooked it. I won't be having too much Xmas pudding though as it is so fattening and I won't fit into my Wicked Queen dress on Boxing day!
I have always adored Christmas and I love it even more now I have children. They get so excited and on Christmas Eve a 6ft Santa Claus resembling my hubby comes around with the presents. Lucy is 13 and Jack it 10, so I'm not sure Sam will get away with it this year. I expect we will be playing on the WII all afternoon as they have put allot of the WII games on their Christmas lists.
I always dress up on Christmas day and take time to do my makeup as so many photos are taken.
The television goes off while we eat our dinner and on goes all the old Xmas songs. I have a couple of compilation albums I put on with all the old crooners on. We always watch the Queens speech.
On New Year’s Eve I will be wishing for the family to remain happy and healthy and that the work keeps coming in for Sam and myself. I am hoping my new business venture Perfect Frame Photography.co.uk does well and that I can carry on having a blessed life.
WE CHAT TO… FASHION DESIGNER PEARL LOWE
In the weeks before Christmas, I make sure that I book a Sk:n Clinic Manuka Honey Facial to perk up my skin. It includes a glycolic peel or microdermabrasion to smooth fine lines and brighten my skin. At the same time I book another for after New Year to rejuvenate and rehydrate my skin after the party season.
My family is really important to me and I couldn’t imagine Christmas without them. I’ll be spending the day at home, infront of log fires, wishing for a White Christmas.
On the day, I will be wearing a red velvet dress - feminine, figure hugging, warm and festive!
I’ll be listening to The Fleet Foxes, obviously White Winter Hymnal.
We’ll be eating a nut roast, all the traditional veggies, and some home-baked mince pies. I don’t drink alcohol any more. I’ll be happy with herbal teas or maybe a non-alcoholic berry cocktail if I can get one organized on the day.
For 2010, all I could wish for is that I will spend Christmas with everyone I want to spend it with.
(The Sk:n Clinics Manuka Honey Facial is on offer between now and 31 January 2010 at £35 (usually £79). Visit www.sknclinics.co.uk to find your nearest branch or call 0800 028 7222)
WE CHAT TO… LK TODAY’S RESIDENT HAIRDRESSER RICHARD WARD
On Christmas Day, I’d love to unwrap my new hair product range – it’s currently in formulation and I can’t wait to see the finished range! Also, a midnight blue Aston Martin would be rather nice. Oh, and a rose gold Cartier watch…I’m a watch addict and can never have enough of them.
Family is very important to me – as I work so hard in the salon and in the media I’m often flying around the country so I really treasure time with my family. I’ll be spending the day with my wife and children, at my sister and brother in law's house in Surrey.
I will be wearing a new Christmas jumper - but something very funky by Kenzo…certainly nothing novelty and woolen! We’ll be listening to rubbish Christmas music – well, it’s only once a year isn’t it?!
We’ll be drinking lots of ice cold pink champagne (Laurent Perrier preferably) with some smoked salmon nibbles then a full traditional Christmas dinner.
On New Year’s Eve, I will be keeping my fingers crossed that my dreams come true in 2010 and I will be thankful for my family’s health and love – and for what I have achieved so far.
WE CHAT TO… CELEBRITY MAKEUP ARTIST RUBY HAMMER
On Christmas Day, I’d love to receive another bottle of Sisley Supreyma La Nuit Cream. I use this at the moment and it is amazing – I noticed a difference from the first night I used it and lots of people commented on how well I looked.
I would also love a Clarisonic, which is a cleansing gadget. I first saw it in the US and they are now available in the UK. The gadget uses sonic technology to cleanse and clean the skin deep down and, as I believe you can’t beat a really good cleanse, I’d love to try this.
I’d love to receive a voucher for Agua Spa at The Sanderson Hotel for a body treatment using Aromatherapy Associates Renew products. I love the rose scent of the products and to be pampered with them at Agua would be amazing.
Usually everyone comes to my house but this year we are still staying in London but going to my daughter and her boyfriend’s house.
In the morning, when we are unwrapping presents and preparing the food, I like to be warm and comfy so I will probably wear my cashmere bottoms with a soft T-Shirt and cashmere jumper. After that, we all like to make an effort so I will probably change into a Diane Von Furstenberg dress and YSL heels. My mum always puts on an amazing sari too.
We like to open presents to classics like Bing Crosby and Nat King Cole and for the rest of the day everyone takes turns on putting on whatever they fancy.
For the New Year, I will be wishing for the beat possible health for me and my family and the peace of mind for us to all cope with the stresses of modern life. I would also hope that I can close the door on any old baggage that I may still be carrying around with me so I can have a totally fresh start in 2010.
WE CHAT TO… MODEL, SOCIALITE AND TV PRESENTER TAMARA ECCLESTONE
I love surprises, but clothes and bags always go down rather well at Christmas. I’ve also had my eye on a beautiful bracelet for a while. I’d love to unwrap a few beauty products too – especially Bliss Hot Salt Scrub, Bliss Body Butter, Bliss Oxygen Mask and Bliss Triple Oxygen Facial.
The perfect Christmas would be spent at our family home in Gstaad, Switzerland, in the snow. I’d be with my family, my boyfriend, and my dogs.
All I Want for Christmas by Mariah Carey is such a feel-good classic & always gets you in a festive mood. I love all Christmas music though – it’s so emotive & really puts me in a Christmas spirit.
No Christmas is complete without a huge lunch! Christmas day is always a day to shun the diet! We feast on all the delicious traditional Christmas grub – turkey with loads of stuffing, potatoes, gravy and, of course, Christmas pudding and lashings of custard. After all, it only comes once a year!
On New Years Eve, I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed that 2010 is the best year yet.
