February 2010

Editor’s Letter (26.02.10)
Breaking News - 72% of men are said to dislike celebrity fragrances. The survey, by online perfume retailer www.halfpriceperfumes.co.uk reveals that the majority of men prefer soft, feminine fragrances like those by Gucci and Marc Jacobs – rather than the sickly sweet versions by our favourite Z-Listers. This doesn’t surprise me – it doesn’t even make me bat an eyelid, as celebrity fragrances are vile, tasteless inventions that never should’ve been shown the light of day. The only exception that I will make is for Sarah Jessica Parker, who clearly knows a thing or two about fragrance and puts some thought into the product that has her name on it – but every other celebrity fragrance can take a running leap as far as I’m concerned. So no, this news doesn’t surprise me – but what does is that intelligent, modern women are still buying them. What authority do the likes of Colleen Rooney, Celine Dion, Britney Spears – oh and Steven Gerrard’s missus – have towards fragrance? They didn’t train for years to recognise the best possible combination of notes. They didn’t spend months in a lab creating the perfect balance of fragrance. They didn’t travel the world, taking inspiration from the exotic scents that fill the air. No – they just agreed to bung their name on the bottle and sit tight waiting for the cheque. My other half doesn’t dislike celebrity fragrance – as he’s never had the misfortune to sniff one. I am keeping my fingers crossed for the other 72%...

Bobbi Brown. When coral appeared time and time again on the eyes, lips, and cheeks of models on the Spring/Summer catwalk, I knew it was only a matter of time before the big brands created collections to tie in with the trend. I wasn’t wrong – and my favourite, without a doubt, is Bobbi Brown’s pretty wearable take on the trend: Cobana Coral Collection. My highlights from the range include the Lip & Eye Palette (£48), Nectar and Pink Quartz Shimmer Bricks (£29.50 each), Golden Nectar Lip Gloss (£14), and six delicious new shades of Lip Color (£15 each). www.bobbibrown.co.uk

Headmasters. I visited hair salon Headmasters last week to try their new Blow Dry menu (starting at £25). With six styles to choose from – The Portobello Pony, The Now Manhattan, The Jerry, The Bardot Beau, The Alice Band Braid, The Charleston Curl, and the Mademoiselle – I was spoilt for choice. I eventually plumped for The Bardot Beau – loose and wavy around the shoulders, sleek and slightly raised on the crown. After 45 pampering minutes, I was truly staggered – I had no idea my hair could look that stylish. I highly recommend dropping into a salon whenever you need a confidence boost. At Salons Nationwide and Fenwick Blow-Dry Bar, London. 0207 6299161

Sisley. I love Sisley for its effective, results-driven skincare products, so when I heard that the brand was launching a range of Express Facials at Selfridges London, I was ready to hotfoot it to Oxford Street. Treatments include ‘The Me Time Instant Glow Facial’, ‘Jet Lag Recovery Facial’, and ‘The Teenage Regulating Facial’ for younger customers. And the best bit? The £35 booking fee can be redeemed after your facial for any two Sisley skincare products – so you are essentially getting a luxurious 30-minute facial for free. Call 0207 3183475.

Revlon. Another beautiful range that has arrived on my desk this week is Global Artistic Director Gucci Westman’s first colour collection for Revlon. The brand’s Spring/Summer collection is inspired by lush, tropical florals, with mouth-watering shades of pink, coral, blue, and purple. I have fallen in love with Minted Nail Colour (£6.29) – a paler, softer take on last season’s mint green polishes, which would look especially pretty against bronzed, summer skin. It makes me want to dash to the nearest travel agent and book a far-flung holiday. Available Nationwide.

Bourjois. I’m loving Bourjois’ new Healthy Mix Foundation (£10.99) and Concealer (£6.99), which is enriched with fruit ingredients to enhance skin radiance. The foundation, available in 8 shades, contains extracts of apricot for brightness, ginger for tone, apple for antioxidant properties, and melon to help retain the skin’s moisture – whilst the concealer contains apricot, melon, and raspberry to activate the circulation. I love the smooth, silky texture and am really impressed with how long it lasts on skin, giving a lovely even-tone to the complexion throughout the day. It’s too early to say how it’s improved the condition of my skin, but so far I’m very impressed. Boots Nationwide.

Breaking News: ELEMIS CELEBRATES 20TH BIRTHDAY (26.02.10)
It’s time to pull those party poppers, as luxury brand Elemis is celebrating its 20th birthday this year. Since its launch, the brand has grown to become one of the most popular and successful spa brands in the beauty industry – loved for its indulgent treatments and results-driven home products.
Festivities kicked off in a suitably indulgent fashion at a star-studded party held at London’s One Marylebone. Guests, including Trinny Woodhall, Konnie Huq and models Yasmin Le Bon and Marie Helvin, were treated to pink Ruinart Champagne, a selection of tempting British themed canapés and birthday cupcakes. Additionally , Elemis’ team of professional therapists were on hand inviting partied-out attendees to the chill out zone where shiatsu back massage, scalp massage and hand massages were provided.
As hosts, Managing Director Sean Harrington and Director of Product & Treatment Development, Noella Gabriel thanked guests and announced a charitable collaboration with the Mothers4Children foundation. A proportion of sales will be donated throughout the year, with a glowing Lisa Bilton accepting a generous initial cheque of ten thousand pounds in her capacity as Creative Director of the foundation.
The most exciting element of the evening? Guests couldn’t stop talking about the brand’s plans for the year. Elemis directors unveiled a preview of Limited Edition anniversary products including their signature Skin Nourishing Milk Bath, beautifully presented in an Italian glass decanter reminiscent of the original packaging and a super-sized 100ml version of their bestselling Pro-Collagen Marine Cream, whilst sharing details of launches to follow throughout 2010. Here’s to another 20 years!

Feature: SPRING TRENDWATCH (26.02.10)
The weather might be firmly fixed in winter – but every good beauty junkie should be looking ahead to spring. Not feeling inspired? Simply follow our guide to the key beauty trends for the season ahead.

NEW NUDES
As seen: The trend for nude tones of caramel, cafe au lait, spice and biscuit extends to beauty this season, with a look that is best described as ‘polished elegance’. Burberry, Jaeger London, and David Koma sent models down the runway with neutral lips and eyes, and a flawless base – with the only exception being a hint of gloss or shimmer to highlight and add texture.
Get the look: A flawless base is essential to this look, so start by applying NARS Orgasm Illuminator, £21 (www.spacenk.co.uk) - a newly-launched sheer highlighter that is set to earn as dedicated a following as the brand’s cult blush.
For lips, look no futher than Estee Lauder. American designer Michael Kors has teamed up with the brand to create the ultra-desirable Very Hollywood collection, which is split into two themes: Bel Air Beige and Rodeo Pink, designed to capture the iconic glamour of Hollywood. Bel Air Beige is perfect for recreating the New Nudes trend, with colours that combine luxury appeal with surprisingly wearable colours. Estee Lauder Michael Kors Very Hollywood Lip Sheen SPF 15 in Honey Blonde, £17 (www.esteelauder.co.uk) will add a subtle, but pretty tint to your pout.
On a budget? Bourjois’ limited edition eyeshadows in Citron Givre and Tabac Blond, £5.99 (Boots Nationwide) are perfect for eyes. Whilst for nails, opt for Chanel Le Vernis in Particuliere £16 (0207 493 3836) - an edgy mushroom shade which is already proving to be the must-have of the season, with supplies increasingly limited as beauty addicts worldwide snap up the ulra-luxurious bottles.

COLOUR SHOCK
As seen: Spotted everywhere from Prada to Giles Deacon, makeup popped with shocks of bright colour.
Get the look: The Spring/Summer catwalks showcased a spectrum of vivid colours, from yellow and orange, to turquoise and violet – so don’t be afraid to show off your artistic streak this season. Let your makeup do the talking, by keeping the rest of your look simple. Nervous? Why not experiment with bright nail colours? Check out Makeup by Barbara Daly (Tesco nationwide) for a primary rainbow of colours at prices that enable you to play around.
For a wearable take on the trend, shades of coral and orange still reign strong. Makeup guru Bobbi Brown explains, “Coral lips and cheeks are an easy way to add a pop of colour to your makeup.” To achieve, blend Bobbi Brown Sheer Colour Cheek Tint in Coral, £16.50 (www.bobbibrown.co.uk) into the apples of cheeks. It gives a subtle, youthful flush of colour that won’t look chalky and is ideal for everyday use.

PRETTY PLAITS
As seen: Plaits featured time after time on the Spring/Summer’s catwalks, with designers embracing their romantic, whimsical sides. The look was seen at Margaret Howell, Erdem and Alexander Wang to name just a few – and has already been spotted on celebrities, including Cheryl Cole, Fearne Cotton and Thandie Newton.
Get the look: The trick is not to keep it simple. A few loose strands simply add to the laidback vibe, as celebrity hair stylist Mark Hill explains, “The plait should be thick and chunky, and never be too neat”. Inject volume when blow-drying using Mark Hill Va Va Voom Blow Dry Mousse, £4.99 (Boots nationwide) – or, if you struggle with home styling, backcomb first. This is the season to embrace the once-dreaded frizz.
Instantly update your locks with hair accessories. Hairslides resembling vintage heirlooms adorned loose up-dos at Dolce & Gabbana, in the same way that jewellery added a refined finish to clothing. Make no mistake - these are the sort of embellishments that would make Gossip Girl green with envy; head to Accessorize or Johnny Loves Rosie for budget versions.

SLEEK HAIR
As seen: The futuristic collections of Balenciaga and Badgley Mischka demanded sleek, simple, yet fashion-forward styles for the hair.
Get the look: Leave the complicated styles to the experts and instead, update your look with slicked back long ponytails and buns.
Renato Campora, lead stylist for Frederic Fekkai, used the brand’s signature products to create a hi-shine look for Marchesa’s show. Campora mixed Coiff Extra Control Styling Gel and Coiff Strong Hold Volume Mousse to smooth hair into a ponytail at the back of the head and added extra brilliance with Glossing Cream, all £16 (www.hqhair.com)
Meanwhile, Bumble & Bumble’s Neil Moodie, who created hairstyles for Burberry and Margaret Howell, advises: “To avoid any lumps in the back of a ponytail, lean your head as far back as you can when starting the style. Place the palm of your free hand on the back of your head to hold hairs in place, then sweep the rest into the pony. No matter what height, your pony will be free of those tricky back-of-the-head bumps.”
Ensure the finished result is fashion-forward by choosing your styling products with care. Bumble & Bumble Bb Gel, £19.45 (0207 247 5656) provides a sporty wet-look that will maintain a groomed appearance as the temperatures increases – or for a lustrous finish, apply Oribe 24K Gold Pomade, £46 (www.spacenk.co.uk).

URBAN WARRIOR
As seen: An surprisingly tough look for this time of year, models walked the runways at Rodarte, Malandrino and Jason Wu sporting body art, dark eye makeup, and vampish lips.
Get the look: It’s time to start toning up, as once the sunshine hits, the hottest bodies will be flaunting body art. However, fashions come and go, so there’s no need to shock your relatives by going for the ink needle. Once solely the preserve of pre-teens, temporary tattoos have gained a cool new appeal this season with Karl Lagerfeld adding his seal of approval via Chanel’s must-have range of hand drawn Decalomania, which feature iconic symbols of the brand such as chains and birds. £49, from 1st March.
For your face, make a bold statement with strong brows, smoky eyes, or bold lips. Terry Barber, MAC’s Director of Artistry for the UK & Ireland, interprets the look as “The feeling is anti-establishmen,t but it’s still got a luxury to it, so it’s not full-on “street”... It’s more of an attempt to project an attitude of individuality and a sense of ownership than about looking gorgeous in the traditional sense.”

ICE CREAM PASTELS
As seen: The catwalks were awash with a palette of pastels in soft sherbet and ice-cream shades that were practically good enough to eat.
Get the look: Lilac, seen at Versace and Sass & Bide, offers a way to interpret the trend without being too saccharine – whilst custard, mint and ice blue are well worth the investment.
The trend looks adorable on nails, reminiscent of innocent childhood memories. Renowned makeup artist Gucci Westman created Revlon’s Spring/Summer collection, which was used backstage at the Sass & Bide show and includes mint and lilac nail lacquers, £6.29 each (Boots Nationwide from March 10th). Revlon’s Spokesperson for Nail Enamel and Nail Care Andrea Fulerton, shares her tricks for pulling off this trend: “Pastels is a fast, cost effective way of being trendy but may be best worn with dark coloured clothes to counteract the paleness/ brightness of the often white base. If you’re finding them too bright, then just apply one coat for a hint of a hue. Keep nails short but there and be sure not to “saw” down the sides as it weakens their structure..if you have short nails that just don’t grow that long then, when painting, leave a slight gap down the sides of your nails to give an illusion of slightly more length.”
OPI in Do you Lilac It?, £9.95 (www.lenawhite.co.uk) is a darker lilac worth looking out for, whilst Illamasqua, known for their professional quality and intense pigments, exclusively launch four enticing shades at Selfridges this month at £13 each.

Tried & Tested: SPF FOUNDATIONS (26.02.10)
Make sure your foundation contains SPF to protect your skin. We’ve put six to the test.

CLARINS EVERLASTING FOUNDATION SPF 15, £23 (www.clarins.co.uk)
What they say: A creamy fluid foundation that delivers extra long-lasting medium-to-full coverage that is non-transfer and stays super-comfortable and fresh-looking for up to 15 hours at a time.
The Results: When I first tried this foundation I was worried it would be a bit runny and wouldn’t last for long, but I was delighted to be proved wrong. It smoothed onto my skin easily and dried almost instantly, without patches or streaks. My skin felt velvety-smooth and it gave a great level of coverage, hiding blemishes and under-eye circles. My skin looked matte and had an almost powdery feel, which was great as my T-Zone can get quite shiny. It lasted all day and the only touch-ups I made were a few dabs of concealer for extra coverage. I have to say this product smells fantastic too, which is quite rare for a foundation.
Best For: Long lasting coverage

CHANEL TEINT INNOCENCE SPF 12, £28.61 (www.debenhams.com)
What they say: The light coverage ensures a flawless, ultra-natural complexion. The skin is moisturised, soft and protected.
The Results: I love Chanel beauty products, so was very pleased to be asked to test this product. The sleek glass jar with black lid is so stylish and I couldn’t wait to try it. The design of the jar means that only a small amount of product pours out at a time, so there’s little wastage. My skin had a fabulous natural, dewy glow after I applied just a thin layer of this and everyone commented on how luminous it looked. A little amount goes a long way, so even though it’s pricey it’s definitely worth the investment
Best For: A dewy glow

BOBBI BROWN SKIN FOUNDATION SPF 15, £27.50 (www.bobbibrown.co.uk)
What they say: Formulated with a unique balance of pigments, emollients and light reflective optics, this long-wearing foundation smoothes, hydrates and instantly minimises the look of pores.
The Results: I struggle with open pores around my nose and this definitely helped to conceal them. I found the formula a bit sticky, but it did smooth over my skin evenly and gave a very natural and radiant-looking effect. After a couple of uses, I noticed a few blemishes appearing, so I think I’ll only use this product in small doses in the future. This product feels very moisturising so I’ll probably use it more in the winter when my skin is dry, as I think it could make my skin a bit greasy in the summer. For those with dry skin, I would recommend it wholeheartedly – I was really impressed with how healthy and even-toned my skin looked.
Best for: Moisturising skin

BARE MINERALS SPF 15 FOUNDATION, £22 (www.bareescentuals.co.uk)
What they say: Our unique formula provides adjustable, sheer-to-full coverage without the look or feel of heavy makeup. Ideal for all ages, skin tones and concerns.
The Results: Ever since I heard about this brand, I’ve been desperate to try it. A colleague of mine wore it and people actually thought she had had cosmetic surgery as her skin looked so fantastic! I have terrible redness and rosacea and I’m always masking my face with foundation and concealer to hide it. This is without doubt the best product I have ever tried and I didn’t even have to apply a thick layer to get results. It was so easy and quick to use and I didn’t need to use concealer on top, which is a first. My skin looked almost airbrushed and I can’t believe the difference this has made. This is my new staple buy.
Best For: Addressing skin concerns

MAC STUDIO FIX FLUID, SPF 15, £19 (www.maccosmetics.co.uk)
What they say: Provides medium buildable coverage and flawless natural-matte finish. Includes SPF15 for everyday sun protection. Oil-free and long-wearing.
The Results: I prefer foundations that offer heavy coverage, as I get terrible blemishes and suffer from acne scarring. This is fantastic for covering up all my imperfections, without the product looking too caked on, so I can wear it in the daytime and evening. My skin had a gorgeous opaque look and I felt much more confident going out. It didn’t work well for covering specific areas only – it ends up looking a bit patchy – so I’d recommend sticking to a concealer for that purpose and using this products for all-over coverage only. It will be great for taking on holiday as it will cover up my spots and stop my skin burning.
Best for: Covering imperfections

CLINIQUE REPAIRWEAR ANTI-AGING MAKEUP SPF 15, £21.50 (www.clinique.co.uk)
What they say: Skin looks flawless, vibrant, now and into the future. This luxurious makeup helps block and mend the look of lines instantly, and over time. SPF15 plus antioxidants add to the benefits of all-day hydration.
The Results: I’ve started to get fine lines around my eyes and lips and I’ve found it difficult to find a product that hides them. My friend, a makeup artist, has always said her one beauty tip would be to wear sunscreen. Finally I have found something that will protect my skin from the sun and fill my lines. This really does make a difference; my skin looks smoother and definitely younger. It is really soothing and hydrating, which is perfect for my skin. It gives a nice natural sheen and blends nicely with my skin tone.
Best For: Hiding fine lines and wrinkles

Spa Review: VERBENA SPA, NORTH YORKSHIRE (26.02.10)
Location: Feversham Arms Hotel and Verbena Spa, High Street, Helmsley, North Yorkshire, YO62 5AG. 01439 770766. www.verbenaspa.co.uk
Facilities: On the outskirts of the Yorkshire moors, in the quaint village of Helmsley, lies Verbena Spa - a stunning addition to the award-winning Feversham Arms Hotel. Impressive without being imposing, the hotel and spa sit seamlessly side-by-side, the open-air hot-tub surrounded by Secret Garden-style foliage while the heated outdoor pool forms the focal point of the courtyard. Not that you would notice, because despite being overlooked by a handful of luxury hotel suites, it still feels incredibly secluded, making it perfect for spa amateurs and couples looking to introduce a spot of beautifying into their mini-break. As well as the al fresco attractions, the spa has its fair share of facilities. Six spacious treatment rooms, a couples retreat, and a heat experience comprising saunarium, salt inhalation room, aromatherapy room, rasul, ice cave, monsoon shower and three heated foot spas account for the majority of floor space, while the manicure and pedicure station provides feel-good fixes for those in need of instant gratification. The best bit, however, has to be the relaxation area - think floor-to-ceiling windows, soft squidgy sofas in calming creams and moss greens, and mountains of up-to-date glossies to keep you going in-between treatments and teatime. And, if you can’t make it the few steps to the small spa cafe, you can indulge in a light bite curled up on one of the couches.
Ambience: Friendly staff and chilled-out guests make for a happy spa experience. It’s English country garden meets glamour-puss pampering, finished with a hefty slice of northern soul. Nothing is too much trouble and there’s no chance you’ll ever feel out of place here, whether you’re wandering through the hotel in your glad rags or sauntering through the spa in your dressing gown.
Treatments tested: Verbena Spa Therapeutic Massage, (£48 for 45 minutes)
One of their signature treatments, this body massage was the perfect antidote to my outdoor swimming session. Using a blend of lime and lavender essences, the warming scents of the oils, combined with the low-lighting, soft music and expert touch meant that I was soon struggling to stop myself drifting into the land of slumber. Following the premise, ‘if it works, don’t fix it’; while the massage wasn’t especially ground-breaking, it didn’t need to be. The knots in the top of my back and shoulders were soon dissolved, and it left me feeling thoroughly relaxed and switched off from the outside world. If anything, I wish I’d booked in for the hour and a half length version instead.
Spa packages start at £55 per person.

Blog: CLAUDIA FALLAH - GERMANY’S NATURAL SKINCARE GURU – SHARES HER BEAUTY ‘MUST HAVES’ (26.02.10)
Claudia Fallah has been a professional skin care therapist for the past 23 years. She has trained with noted dermatologists and cosmetic surgeons in Germany and has developed her own luxurious natural skincare range, using pure plant ingredients to accelerate the skin’s healing process.
Claudia is often referred to as one of London's ‘best kept secrets’ and has a strong following with numerous celebrity clients
Starting my own brand…
When I first came to London from Germany 13 years ago, I realised that there was a lack of skin brands or therapists offering natural herbal skin peeling treatments, which I found extraordinary for London. It was at this moment that I identified my niche in the UK beauty industry. I had completed my education in Germany and as I experienced working alongside leading Dermatologists and Cosmetic Surgeons, I found that I have always been focusing on skin trauma, looking at how to speed up the healing process and increase cell renewal of the skin. I believe it is very important to have the experience of working within the medical field, but also combining the naturopathic side and nutrition element in order to get the best results for my client’s skin issues. It is so important to look at all different aspects of health and wellbeing of the entire body and not just at the skin itself in order to achieve the best results. A lot of people suffer with various skin problems that can sometimes affect their personal wellbeing, which can lead into a "wishes circle" affecting their own health and their skin. You can also be the healthiest person on the planet, but if your mind set is causing you to feel depressed or down, this can cause the ph level of your blood to change into a more acidic, which could cause a lot of health and skin related issues. So my philosophy is to look at the whole body and my client’s lifestyle to achieve the best results. Having practiced for 24 years as a therapist myself, I have found that it is essential to understand every single ingredient inside out. I have highly sensitive skin that is prone to eczema and allergies, as well as suffering from asthma. I have to be extremely careful in choosing which products I can use on my own skin, products must NOT contain any perfume or artificial fragrances, alcohol or any synthetic or chemical or animal ingredients. This inspired me to develop my own skin care range and herbal peeling treatments in the UK. These days I often get asked by clients…”What product could you not live without”? Well one would be the Claudia Fallah Cover Rescue which I absolutely need to control my eczema. The other question is which beauty addresses could I not live without… for my own beauty regime - my health and internal wellbeing is very important. The Nutri Center in the Hale Clinic is a great place to purchase good quality supplements like Vitamin C, which is great for anti aging and also to brings your cholesterol level down at the same time if no other medication has ever worked so far. At the same time you can visit an herbal medicine naturopath like Gary Peyper who will help you to discover the importance of health body composition taking measures to reduce your disease risk. If you are up for it you could also find that having a colonic irrigation treatment will improve the quality of your skin dramatically and also your wellbeing.

TRIED & TESTED: SKIN PRIMERS (19.02.10)
This week, we’ve tried six skin primers that promise to boost radiance, perfect the complexion, control oil, or calm the skin.

BOOTS NO.7 COLOUR CALMING PRIMER, £10.50 (www.boots.com)
What they say: This primer is ideal for correcting sallow or dull complexions. The clever colour neutralises any yellowness; making the skin look brighter, refreshed and energised.
The Results: When I first squeezed this into my hand I wasn’t sure I wanted to use it – it’s thick and green! However it promised to reduce redness and as I suffer with adult acne, I was hoping it would help make my spots look less angry before applying my foundation. I used a pea-sized amount and spread it evenly over my face. The green tint disappeared as soon as I started to rub it in and my whole face had a more even-tone It lasted well throughout the day and I’d really recommend it.
Best for: Problem Skin.

DIOR SKINFLASH PRIMER RADIANCE BOOSTING MAKEUP PRIMER, £28 (www.dior.co.uk)
What they say: Skinflash Primer is the new anti-fatigue step for a complexion that glows with beauty and light! The complexion instantly appears smooth, fresh and rested. Dullness and areas of shadows are brightened and the skin is full of vitality. The product is enriched with exclusive Photo-smart Pigments™, a made-to-measure source of light. These pigments adapt to all types of light, diffusing it under all circumstances.
The Results: This is amazing! Firstly I love the ‘click’ feature that delivers the primer to the brush. I only needed to click it three times and there was enough to cover my entire face. This primer is a peachy-coloured, lightweight fluid that smells delicious and blended easily. Beware of using too much – three blobs covered my whole face, although it’s not thick enough to cover blemishes or imperfections. The end result is smooth, dewy looking skin that glows with radiance. I felt really confident wearing it and only needed a dusting of powder over the top. It’s pricey – but worth every penny.
Best for: Glowing skin

CLINIQUE PORE MINIMISER INSTANT PERFECTOR, £13 (www.clinique.co.uk_
What they say: This primer instantly camouflages pores and controls shine, leaving a perfected, natural looking, refined complexion. Remarkably, this advanced, long-wearing formula conceals without adding colour to the complexion, and personal preference dictates whether to wear it under or over foundation, with just powder, or alone.
The Results: I’ve been ‘blessed’ with large pores on my cheeks and nose - and I absolutely hate them. I spend half my life trying to cover them up and am constantly reapplying makeup to hide them. The first time I put this on my pores literally disappeared in front of my eyes – it was fantastic! I didn’t bother putting it on my chin and forehead, but smoother it over my cheeks and my skin appeared much clearer. It made a huge difference underneath foundation and didn’t clog pores or give me spots like so many other primers. I thoroughly recommend this product – it does just what it says on the tin and is great value for money.
Best for: Minimising pores

BOBBI BROWN OIL CONTROL LOTION, £30 (www.bobbibrown.co.uk)
What they say: A new daytime moisturiser for normal-to-oily and combination skins. This lightweight, hydrating formula keeps skin looking smooth and shine free. Seaweed Extract helps soothe while absorbing excess oil. Lavender Extract aids in reducing visible skin irritation.
The Results: I love Bobbi Brown products, as the formulas are suited to my ‘more mature’ skin. I’ve been looking for a good primer for a while because my regular foundation has started to sit in the fine lines around my eyes and mouth, making me look older than I feel! This lightweight product absorbed easily into my skin and I was really pleased with my fresh-faced, shine-free look. I only needed to reapply powder once throughout the whole day. This will definitely become a staple of my makeup bag.
Best for: Mature skin

BENEFIT THAT GAL, £19.50 (www.benefit.co.uk)
What they say: This silky pink primer makes skin appear smother and brighter. Wear alone for clear complexion radiance or apply before makeup for a smooth, effortless application. Contains soothing raspberry and chamomile, combined with sweet almond and algae extracts to help skin retain its natural moisture for a soft and silky finish.
The Results: This handy-sized tube fits easily into any makeup bag. It looks typically ‘Benefit’ with funky packaging, which I loved. It’s easy to use with a twist of the base, which pumps the product up to the top. I then simply blended it onto my skin with my fingertips. I don’t tend to wear foundation, but I like to use primers to give my skin an even-tone before I add bronzer. This primer instantly brightened my whole face and made it glow. It’s great value for money because I barely used more than a pea-sized amount and it covered my whole face.
Best for: Young skin

GIVENCHY MISTER MAT, £20 (01932 233824)
What they say: From the moment of application, MatRadiance Pearlizers, whose surface is made up of a layer of mat silica, go into action. They help to diminish shiny zones, while heightening the radiance of mat complexion due to their subtle blue-toned reflections. Hour after hour the formula, enriched with a plant complex with soothing sebaceous reducing properties, matifies the complexion. All day long, the multi-reflective pigments help blur imperfections. Pores appear visibly tightened.
The Results: This gorgeous product has a non-greasy texture that made it really easy to apply all over my face. It easily and quickly blended into my skin and left a non-sticky bright look. I hate having a shiny face and this primer instantly mattified my skin and helped makeup stay matte throughout the day. I didn’t need to retouch my makeup and I think it even made my lines look less visible. I don’t think I’ll use liquid foundation again without this primer going on first!
Best for: A matte finish

Blogs: ROSE-MARIE JARVIS – HAIRCARE EXPERT FOR GOODY – FILLS US IN ON HER BEAUTY REGIME (19.02.10)
When it comes to beauty I’m a girly girl at heart. I love products that make me feel and look great and I follow Clinique’s three step process (cleanse, tone and moisturise) religiously. Benefit and MAC are firm favourites in my makeup bag, but as most girls will also probably confess, I can’t live without my Touche Eclat. When it comes to my hair, which is my passion, I like to keep things interesting by glamming it up with gorgeous hair accessories.
I know most women will agree with me when I say that my hair is my crowning glory, so it’s important to take care of it. So when it comes to picking out the right tools for the job, what’s a girl to do? Vent, paddle, cushion, round or radial – it’s like a minefield, and so often we just nab the one that we saw the hairdresser using, or even worse the one Mum has used for years (sorry Mum).
But believe it or not, like most things in life you need a brush that suits your hair type perfectly, or you’re going to end up doing untold damage.
This was the thinking behind Goody’s new Start, Style, Finish range. Hallelujah – the range is designed to de-mystify the whole process, making it the new cleanse, tone and moisturise for your hair.
Designed to give your hair the best Start to the day, the first step of the programme allows you to condition, detangle and quick-dry hair when wet thanks to a selection of combs and brushes. Next, products in the Style range will help you volumise, straighten or curl, while you blow dry, including the Ouchless Hot Round Brush - the ceramic barrel enables quick drying, whilst the Quick Release Button™ retracts the bristles for easy hair removal – genius!
Finally, products from the Finish range smooth, add shine and touch-up your style throughout the day.
Now it might be called “blowing our own trumpet” but I guarantee that by changing your one brush for three, it will transform the way you style and look after your hair –forever!

Feature: MAKEUP MAKEOVER (19.02.10)
Spring is coming, so get ready for the new season’s looks by revamping your makeup bag. We’ve found the new colours, the best formulations and the easiest ways to put it all on…

FACE
If your base is only providing colour, you should think about spring-cleaning your foundation and investing in one that works a bit harder. An SPF just isn’t enough these days: we’re talking about a new generation of foundations that treat and perfect your skin too.
Jemma Kidd Pro’s Skin Rescue Bio Complex Veil, £32 (www.spacenk.co.uk) is a gorgeous tinted primer, skin illuminator, and anti-ageing moisturiser in one; Estee Lauder’s Nutritious Vita-Mineral Liquid Make-up, £24.50 (www.esteelauder.co.uk) contains a multitude of vitamins and minerals and promises to ‘erase signs of fatigue’ as well as providing even coverage; and Clinique’s new Superbalanced Powder Makeup SPF 15, £27 (www.clinique.co.uk) uses a mineral formulation to keep dry areas comfortable and make oily areas less shiny. It’s also perfect for touch-ups and doesn’t cake like some powder foundations.
The Ultra Foundation by Face Atelier, £32 (www.cultbeauty.co.uk) is a favourite with the pros thanks to its ‘soft focus’ effect that blurs fine lines and creates a more polished skin texture. You can also buy a 0+ and a 0- shade in order to fine-tune the foundation to your colouring. And for less coverage, why not try Perricone MD’s No Foundation Foundation, £41 (www.perriconemd.co.uk)? It only comes in one translucent shade, but manages to correct flaws and add a lovely glow, thanks to the moisture boosting, antioxidant-packed formulation. Perfect for the new natural looks this spring.

EYES
The days are getting longer so it’s time to ditch the wintry looks and freshen up for the warmer weather – when it arrives. So say goodbye to smoky eyes and invest in something a little brighter. It’ll make you feel more colourful, even if it’s still cold outside...
The ‘Dolly Mixture’ eye trend means lots of bright colours together – and it’s not for the faint-hearted. Experiment with the Bedhead Cyberoptics range, £7.99 each (www.BeautyBay.com). These individual eye shadows can be applied wet for a more intense effect or dry for a sheer look. There’s a great range of colours, too. Also on BeautyBay.com is Urban Decay, always with their finger on the pulse of any new trends. Try their Deluxe Eyeshadow, £13.50, for a burst of colour that really stays put.
If you’re not ready for the brights, you can tone it down with the pastel effect that’s another hot trend for Spring/Summer 2010. Clinique gets it right as always with their new limited edition Fresh Picked Eye Shadow, £18.50 (www.clinique.co.uk), which comes in two must-have shades for the season: Fresh Picked Berries and Fresh Picked Pear. The fruity compacts are almost too good to use – but when you do you’ll get a subtle wash of colour that lasts all day.
You might know Korres for their gorgeous skincare, but did you know they also have a make-up range? Replace your winter shades with their Colour Shimmering Eyeshadows, £11 each (0207 581 6455), which don’t just come in a range of eye-popping fresh shades, they’re long-wearing, creaseproof and contain ingredients that care for the delicate eye area. So you can look on-trend and sparkly-eyed too!

LIPS
It’s time to clear out those winter wine shades and freshen up your pout with the new season’s palette. The trend is for a sheer colour lips, and the textures are light and fresh, whether it’s bold or neutral. Lipstick Queen is launching 'Fired Up', £15 (www.spacenk.co.uk) at the beginning of February – the perfect sheer red gloss to wean you off your winter red and onto something more wearable in the warmer weather. Or try Laura Mercier’s new Polished Satin Lip Colours, £18 (0800 1234000), which are also launching in February. Choose from Barely
Nude, Pink Cocoa and Maple Brown – perfect for the Sixties look seen on the catwalks.
Coral and orange shades are everywhere this spring, so bring your make-up bag bang up to date with Lancome’s Spring Colour Collection ‘O My Rose!’. Experiment with their Color Fever Gloss in Orange Scopitone, £17.50 (www.lancome.co.uk) or go for the ‘BB Kiss’ Wet & Dry Color Lip Toy, £20 – a pastel-toned wand in an adorable coral shade. Used dry, the result is light and sheer; used wet it delivers an intense, potent colour.
MAC’s spring collection, a collaboration with fashion designer Lilly Pulitzer, is aptly named Lillyland and is as bright and fresh as you’d expect from the funky fashionista. For lips, pick the Lipgelee, £12 (www.maccosmetics.co.uk) in ‘Lush & Bright’, a vibrant pinky-yellow coral. It’s easy to apply, perfect for daywear, and moisturises and conditions your lips into the bargain.

CHEEKS
Spring cheeks need to glow with vitality so throw out your goth-inspired magentas and freshen up with some pinks and corals instead. Bare Escentuals i.d. bareMinerals Blush. £14.79 each (www.BeautyBay.com) are easy to apply because they’re translucent – and have all the skin benefits associated with mineral formulations. ‘Fruit Cocktail’ and ‘Giddy Pink’ will complete your pastel toned look and give a healthy flush to your complexion.
Keeping with the coral trend, Bobbi Brown’s Pot Rouge For Lips And Cheeks, £16.50 (www.bobbibrown.co.uk) comes in Calypso Coral, a really wearable dual-use formula that blots onto cheeks or lips for a sheer, stained finish. With no need for a brush, this is a handy way to keep a ‘freshly made-up’ look going all day. It’s natural and youthful too – ideal for spring.
A great value alternative is The Body Shop’s Kiss Of Colour Cheek Blush, £10 (www.thebodyshop.co.uk). It’s a brand-new idea: a ‘stamp’ format sponge applicator that applies a rosy tint of colour powder to the cheeks in an instant. Brilliant for touch-ups on the go – it’s one of those inventions that makes you wonder why nobody thought of it before... Pick Vibrant Rose or Golden Coral: both right on trend.

NAILS
Revamping your nails is an easy way to update your look and start to feel in the mood for spring. After all, who wants dark, goth-inspired talons once the sun starts shining? Instead, why not embrace the trend for vibrant, 80s style shades? You can afford to be a bit more adventurous on your nails than you would anywhere else... especially on your toes!
Ciaté’s gorgeous Paint Pots, £9 each (www.ciate.co.uk) add a glamorous touch to your dressing table with their cute little bows. And from March, they’ve got a new collection called Festival Fever, featuring fabulous names like ‘Talent Scout’ and ‘Ditch The Heels’ – and equally fabulous colours like a cheeky orange, a bold green and a to-die-for turquoise called ‘Headliner’.
The other must-have nail shade for spring is ‘greige’. Yes, you’ve guessed it, a cross between grey and beige. It works well with the sixties vibe and is more ‘pared-down chic’ than the Dolly Mixture shades. Try Nails Inc’s The Greige Collection, which has Jermyn Street, a soft, neutral brown, £10.50 (www.nailsinc.com). Essie have two fabulous greiges, Chinchilly and the slightly warmer toned Mink Muffs, both £8.95 each (www.cultbeauty.co.uk). Look out for their Spring Collection too, which introduces lilac and coral tones but keeps the shades wearable and subtle.
Another name to watch is Nailgirls (www.nailgirls.co.uk), a boutique nail spa in Angel who have launched their Spring 2010 collection that includes some really easy-to-wear pastel shades such as Pink 18 (a nude/flesh-toned pink) and Taupe (a beige shimmer), all at just £10 a bottle.

TOOLS
Don’t just makeover your makeup products, update your ‘tools of the trade’ too. And if you’re not applying your foundation with a brush, then 2010 is the time to start. It gives you a more even, flawless finish – and after all, if the makeup artists all use a brush, why shouldn’t we? Clarins have a flexible, soft brush made of toray for perfect-looking results, £21. Swirl into the foundation, then, using the brush, sweep over the skin from the centre part of the face and work outwards. Clinique’s Foundation Brush, £20 (www.clinique.co.uk) is flat and tapered, designed for even application and a natural-looking finish and has anti-bacterial technology too. You’ll wonder why you’ve never used one before.
Beautyblender is the name on everyone’s lips when it comes to makeup application and a great start to a new look makeup bag. The patent-pending, elliptical-shaped Beautyblender cosmetic sponge, £14.50 (www.cultbeauty.co.uk) was created by two top Hollywood makeup artists to give a flawless airbrush finish to your complexion, and the sponge's unique shape means you can use it all over the face. It's latex-free, non-irritating, non-allergenic and odourless – and easily washable too. Put it on your shopping list now.
If you’re a fan of the new mineral powder foundation formulas, why not invest in a Kabuki brush? Alison Raffaele's Faux Chinchilla Kabuki Powder Brush, £40 (www.cultbeauty.co.uk) is super soft and plush but is completely synthetic – perfect for animal lovers. It’s ideal for use it with any powder make-up, from loose powder compacts and mineral powders to bronzers and blushers.

Ed’s Letter (19.02.10)
Shock, Horror! Kate Moss was photographed a few weeks ago with grey streaks in her hair. The rumour mill went into overdrive – had she missed a colouring appointment, had she overdone the dry shampoo, or – the media’s favoured conclusion – was she making a style statement? Personally, I’m gunning for the dry shampoo, as it only seemed to be in the front section of her roots. But, either way, you can predict what happened the following day – my inbox was filled with suggestions for getting the ‘grey look’: colouring services, home colouring kits, and temporary sprays that would add streaks. To me, it’s utterly barmy… As a nation, we spend a fortune trying to fend off Mother Nature. We colour our hair, we invest in pricey anti-ageing products, and sometimes even seek the surgeon’s knife for a nip and tuck. So why would we want to spend cash getting a look that we could achieve by simply being, ummmm, a bit lazy and steering clear of our colourists for a while? I’d like to say that I predict a new trend of ageing-products hitting shelves, but I really can’t see it happening… I think Ms Moss was just having a bad hair day – and I bet she was as shocked to see those pictures as we were.

Lancome. I can’t wait for awards season – the BAFTAs, the Brits, the Oscars, I just can’t get enough of the glitz and glamour. It appears that Lancôme loves the red carpet too, as this year marks the brand’s tenth anniversary as the Official Beauty Partner of the BAFTAs – and to celebrate, they have collaborated with Swarovski to launch a limited edition BAFTA Makeup Palette (£45). From the O My Rose! Collection, the Pop N’Cheeks blush is adorned with crystals on the outer compact – and is available exclusively at Selfridges London, with only 100 sold in total. If you want one, get down to the store quickly – these are going to become collector’s items and I will be fighting you to get my hands on one. Selfridges London.

Tisserand. I’m sick of these arctic weather conditions and wish we could fast forward to the balmy days of summer. This week, I was handed a bottle of Tisserand Sweet Orange and Jasmine Body Lotion (£8.75) and it cheered me up instantly. It smells like summer in a bottle – a dreamy blend of sweet orange, jasmine, cedarwood, ginger, and rosemary oils in a velvety-smooth base. It has left my skin feeling incredible – but better still, the cheerful scent clings to skin for hours, so it’s a great pick-me-up for dark February mornings. www.tisserand.com

Collection 2000. I was sent some makeup from Collection 2000 last week and one product stood out – the Lasting Perfection Foundation (£5.99), which promises coverage for 16 hours. I liked the texture – it was lightweight, not at all greasy, and left my skin feeling supple and hydrated. The level of coverage was great too – it gave a lovely flawless finish and covered imperfections impressively. It lasted well – and although the coverage wasn’t quite as perfect as when I first applied it, after 16 hours my complexion was far, far more even-toned than it ever usually would at bedtime. I’m very, very impressed. www.boots.com

Amie. I really, really wish Amie Skincare had been around when I was a teenager… With 95% natural fruit and botanical ingredients, the gentle yet incredibly effective skincare range is aimed at younger skin – but that didn’t stop me enjoying every second of testing the Spring Clean Cooling Clay Mask (£4.95). My sensitive skin – which at 29-years old, is still prone to the odd breakout – felt cool, soothed, and squeaky clean after applying the clay mask for 10 minutes. It smells amazing too, with zingy extracts of organic peppermint and lime butter. Afterwards my complexion was glowing. Buy it for your daughters – or better still, try it yourself. www.amieskincare.com

James Brown. Combination hair – that is, oily roots and dry ends – is very common, so it has always surprised me that only a handful of haircare brands offer a solution to the problem. Even fewer offer products at a price point we can all afford. James Brown London has come to the rescue, with his newly launched Combination Shampoo for Oily Roots & Dry Ends and Conditioner (both £5.99). I’ve just tested the products and can recommend them. The shampoo lathers easily, washes out quickly, gives hair volume and shine, and – the best bit – leaves hair feeling balanced and cleansed for a good couple of days. It’s a great pricepoint – and the large 100ml bottles will last and last. Boots Nationwide.

Breaking News: CLARINS LAUNCHES COTTON FLOWER SPRING MAKEUP COLLECTION (19.02.10)
We’ve just set eyes on Clarins’ stunning Cotton Flower Makeup Collection for Spring/Summer 2010 – and we think it’s one of the prettiest yet. Taking inspiration from crisp white cotton and denim blue, the collection is simple yet striking. Artistic Director Thibault Vabre describes it as “a fresh, elegant simplicity, with white taking the starring role.” The two stand-out products from the collection are the Limited Edition Cotton Flower Face Palette (£29) – a silky-smooth, ultra-light face powder in a pretty-as-a-picture combination of transparent beige and iridescent white – and the Limited Edition Eye Quartet & Liner Palette (£29) – three striking eye shadows in lilac, violet, and gentian blue, along with a sultry indigo blue powder eye liner and a white highlighter. The collection also introduces two new Eye Colour Monos (Desert Blonde and Dusky Rose), four new Jolie Rouge Lipsticks (Pink Blossom, Rose Berry, Sorbet, and Toffee), and two new Gloss Appeals (Iced Pink and Sweet Fig).
The collection is on counters now and available at http://uk.clarins.com

Treatment Review: BLINK & GO™ EYELASHES, NATIONWIDE (19.02.10)
What it promises: The people behind Nouveau Lashes have launched Blink & Go™ Eyelash Extensions – the faster, more affordable choice for those seeking fuller, more dramatic lashes. In just 20 minutes, eyes are transformed by thick, luscious lashes that will last around two weeks. The lashes are applied individually to suit your eye shape, with a vast choice of lengths and colours available. After two weeks, the company recommends that you re-visit the salon to have the lashes professionally removed.
What happens: This isn’t the first time I’ve had eyelash extensions applied – but a half-hour appointment is certainly the shortest appointment I’ve been given when booking in, so I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect… I arrived at the swish Harley Street clinic – although this treatment is available nationwide – and was invited into the stylish, neutrally-decorated treatment room. My therapist quizzed me about the look I wanted to achieve and I explained that I wanted a glamorous look, without being too dramatic. In essence, I wanted my lashes to look natural, but also have the ‘wow factor’. She knew exactly what I meant, and after removing my eye-makeup, asked me hop up onto the ultra-comfortable bed. Unlike past extensions I’ve had applied, the therapist asked me to keep my eyes open and look down, rather than closing them – she explained that this made it easier to keep the eyelid taut and allowed her to see the shape the eye easier. Over the next 20 minutes, she applied the lashes individually, moving impressively quickly from one eye to the other. I was impressed with her technique - she had a row of lashes sat on her hand, with a pot of glue resting on her finger, and used tweezers to pick up each lash, dip it into the glue, and apply to the lashes. When she had finished, she passed me a mirror so I could inspect the results – and she had achieved exactly what I wanted, in the blink of an eye…
The Results: My eyelashes were full, long, and incredibly glamorous – but they didn’t look fake or over-the-top. They felt light and natural too – unlike other extensions that left my lids feeling strangely heavy – and a week later, not a single lash has fallen out. The lashes might not be as dense as other extensions – like the look achieved by parent brand Nouveau Lashes – but the result is still very striking. For important occasions like my wedding later this year, I will still opt for the more expensive, fuller treatments – but for parties, holidays, and times when I need a confidence boost, I wouldn’t hesitate to book another appointment with Blink & Go™.
Price: From £20 for upper set (20 minutes) and £49 for upper and lower set (30-40 minutes)
Location: Salons Nationwide. Visit www.blinkandgo.co.uk or call 0845 644 3994 to find your nearest salon.

Breaking News: WEI BEAUTY LAUNCHES AT SPACE NK (12.02.10)
WEI BEAUTY is probably the most anticipated beauty launch of 2010 – and we’re excited to report that the range has finally arrived on shelves at Space NK. We’re already big fans here at The-Beauty-Pages.com – and can highly recommend giving the luxurious, yet highly effective, products a try.
The holistic skincare range is based on the principles of Chinese medicine, with four product categories to pick from: Purify-Chi – cleansing and purifying treatments, Energize-Yang – energising and revitalising serums, Replenish-Yin – nourishing face and eye creams, and Correct-Zen – perfecting, balancing and restorative treatments.
The range is the brainchild of Wei Y. Brian, who has been fascinated with Chinese herbs since she was nine years old. From her mother, she learnt how nature was able to correct human ailments – and she has since turned that passion and knowledge into the largest skincare brand inspired by Chinese medicine in the West. The range quickly grew into a popular, multi-million dollar business in the US – and when Space NK Founder Nicky Kinnaird spotted the range, it was only a matter of time before her customers were able to enjoy the unique benefits of the range.
Our highlights from the range include: Chinese Rose Foaming Cleanser (£24), Jujube Age Control Serum (£58), Royal Ming Firming and Hydrating Cream (£72) and Mulberry Leaf 3-in-1 Eye Cream (£50).
Available at Space NK Nationwide. Call 020 8740 2085 or visit www.spacenk.co.uk

Blog: PREMIER BEAUTY WORKSHOP’S RICHARD SCORER SOLVES YOUR WINTER HAIR DISASTERS (12.02.10)
Hair needs a little TLC in winter to keep it looking good. Here are my tips for putting some spring back into your barnet.
Static Hair
Static hair happens because the air is drier in winter. To combat static, use a heavier conditioner than usual to give extra nourishment. When blow drying, mix Kiehl’s Silk Groom mixed into your haircare products - and after, rub a small amount of serum onto your brush before brushing your hair. This coats the hair and leaves it static free.
Hat Hair
Hair gets hot under a hat and the moisture acts like a hood drier setting the hair into the position leaving it dented and out of shape. I find it is more about how you put the hat on and off that makes a big difference and softer hats will have less impact! If you have a fringe, push it to one side not back. Once the hat is on don't push it up unless you take it off as this makes a crease in the hair.
You could use this to your benefit by twisting your hair in to two loose ponies on top of your head popping your hat on and let it set into loose waves on your way to work. Alternatively, put the top section into barrel curls or rollers depending on the size of your hat, so when you arrive you will have more body rather than less!
Once you have set the hair into an odd crease the only way to change it is the same as what set it in the first place - heat and moisture - so those gas powered wands are great. I use them on location where there is no power. Any kind of wet styling produc - for example Volumactive Volume Expansion spray from Kerastase - works wonders too. Comb through a small haze on the affected area.
Caught in the Rain
In my view there are two things to do in this situation: go home or put your hair up! With this in mind, it’s probably worth carrying a few hair grips in your bag!
There are a few alternatives. For soft curls you could also twist the hair into a loose low pony until it dries, using the drying time to set it into waves. You can't stop your hair going frizzy in the rain but to lessen the effect wrap your hair around your head and secure with a hat, or tie hair into a tight pony tail and tuck it into the back of your coat.
You could also consider having a permanent blow dry. Try Haringtons, www.haringtons.com. It really does work.

Treatment Review: THE VALIDATION FACIAL AT LUSH SPA (12.02.10)
What it promises: The Validation Facial – the second treatment to be offered at Lush Spa after the signature Synaesthesia massage – is designed to not only leave your skin looking fantastic, but also to instill an inner confidence that will leave you feeling altogether better about yourself. The brand has once again worked with behavioural therapist Lady Helen and composer Simon Emmerson to create a treatment that is designed to tap into the sub-conscience.
What happens: I was lucky enough to test the Synaesthesia massage when it was launched last year, so I knew that I was in for another treat. I arrived at the Lush store on London’s King Road and was invited downstairs to the Spa – greeted by a surreal Alice in Wonderland-style mirror at the foot of the stairs and, around the corner, a twee country kitchen with huge glass bottles lining the shelves. My therapist – the wonderfully smiley Mo – sat me down at the kitchen table and asked me to pick two words to describe how I would like my skin to feel after the facial. I plumped for ‘GLOWING’ and ‘SOFT – she nodded, wrote some notes, then lead me back upstairs to the shop floor to pick the skincare products that would be used during the facial. She added scoops of cleanser, toner, moisturiser, eye cream, neck cream, serum, and body lotion to a large granite palette as we walked around – then back downstairs, the palette was set on the treatment bed and covered in a mist of dry ice to ‘cleanse’ the products. As the treatment began, the music started – it has been composed to give the impression that you are being rowed out to sea, with confidence-boosting words and phrases to dip into the self-conscious state of mind. I remember hearing these words right at the beginning – but after that, they were simply tranquil noises that soothed me into a deep state of relaxation. The facial itself was incredible – everything from the cleansing and toning, right down to the shoulder massage felt amazing. The treatment concluded with a cup of energising tea at the kitchen table, before I braved London’s King Road for my journey home.
The Results: I am thrilled to report that this is one of the best experiences I have had on a treatment bed. My skin felt and looked amazing, but it was more than that – it was the way I felt afterwards that made it so perfect. I felt energised, balanced, yet completely relaxed – similar to the feeling of waking up from an extra-long lie-in and knowing that you have the whole weekend ahead to relax. My skin did indeed feel soft and look glowing – and whilst it broke out in a few blemishes in the days following (my skin’s way of detoxing from the treatment), I have been impressed by the long-lasting results. I would highly recommend this facial – it would make the perfect gift for a friend, mother’s day, or better still, an indulgent treat for yourself.
Price: £75 for one hour, plus consultation time.
Location: The Validation Facial is available at Lush Spa: 123 Kings Road, London SW3 4PL (0207 3768348), 31 Commercial Street, Leeds, LS1 5AD (0113 2433626), 29 High Street, Poole, BH15 1AB (01202 672217), 27 Market Place, Kingston, KT1 1JH (0208 9749929).

Editor’s Letter (12.02.10)
There are few words as ambiguous as the word ‘LOVE’. It is a strong, inexplicable feeling – the way we feel about our partners, children, family, or pets. It can be a term of affection – the way we feel about our favourite perfume, film, or food. It can be brilliant, exciting, and promising – but it can also be painful, overwhelming, and frightening. It can be used in the negative – “Don’t you just love it when your powder compact smashes into pieces on the floor?” – but at other times, it will be taken to be entirely positive. We know its meaning in other languages, when we might comprehend little else – J’adore – and we recognise the shape of a heart as its abbreviation in our own. When there are so many different meanings, different levels of feelings, and different understanding – is it any wonder that such a day as Valentines Day prompts such different reactions? Some celebrate it, others ignore it – some look forward to it, and others dread it. So this Valentines Day, instead of writing a feature encouraging you to paint your nails in a passionate red or to style your hair in romantic ringlets, we have simply asked a panel of our regular writers to fill you in on their love of beauty… Because wherever we are on February 14th – and whoever we are with – we can thank our lucky stars that we will always have our favourite lipstick.

Elemis. It’s time to get the party poppers ready, as Elemis – one of my favourite bath, body, and spa brands – is celebrating its 20th birthday this year. To celebrate, the brand has repackaged its Skin Nourishing Milk Bath (£49 for 500ml) in a beautiful Italian glass decanter - homage to the product’s original packaging when it launched two decades ago. The delicate milk is well worth a splurge, with a luxurious formula that is enriched with Japanese Camellia Oil, Oat Extract, and a Milk Protein base. Better still, Elemis will make a donation from every purchase to the charity Mothers4Children, which exists to support vulnerable children. What better excuse do you need to treat yourself? www.timetospa.co.uk

Clinique. There are few products that impress me enough to make their way permanently onto my dressing table, but Clinique’s Youth Surge Age Decelerating Moisturiser is one that has pride of place. So when I heard that the brand was launching a night cream into the range, I knew I was going to like it. Youth Surge Night Age Decelerating Night Moisturiser (from £28) is enriched with Sirtuins – a range of proteins that help to extend the function and life of skin cells – to visibly restore youth to ageing skin. I’ve tried the Combination Oily to Oily version (it also comes in Very Dry to Dry and Combination Oily to Oily) – a lightweight crème-gel, which leaves the skin feeling soft and refreshed. I would strongly recommend it. www.clinique.co.uk

St Tropez. Whether it’s temporary tattoos, adhesive rhinestones, or body makeup, the most fashionable bodies in town will be treating their skin as a blank canvas this spring/summer. One of my favourite takes on the ‘body art’ trend is St Tropez’s brilliant new Skin Illuminator (£15). The product was created for Marios Schwab’s Spring/Summer show, after the designer told the brand that he wanted model’s limbs, décolletage, and complexions to appear as if they were lit by strobe lighting. Quick to apply, non-transferable, and highly effective, the Skin Illuminator Cream does exactly what it says it’s going to do: it is a lightweight lotion that leaves the body with an iridescent blue tone for instant illumination. The product is available from April – and I am counting down the days. www.st-tropez.com

LCN. I’m addicted to chocolate – so imagine my delight when I was sent a pot of LCN’s Cocoa & Bamboo Delight Foot Cream (£15.10). As soon as I opened the pot, I was hit with waves of chocolate-fudge-scented deliciousness – and the texture was just as indulgent, with oodles of cocoa butter to leave feet feeling incredibly soft and smooth. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait for the weather to be warm enough to slide my feet out of sheepskin boots and into flip-flops – but they will definitely need some tender-loving-care before they are revealed to the world. I predict I will need another few pots of this heavenly stuff – and I will enjoy every second of applying it. www.beautyconcepts.co.uk

SENSPA. One of my favourite ever spas – the award winning Thai-themed SENSPA, at Carey’s Manor in the New Forest – has something a bit different to offer this spring… The spa is offering workshops to teach you how to make your own skincare products using fresh, organic ingredients like avocado, strawberries, manuka honey, and natural yoghurt – and everything you make can be taken home with you. Make Your Own Skincare workshops cost just £25 per person, including a freshly made smoothie and full use of the facilities after the workshop (so it really does pay for itself!) Forthcoming dates are 22nd February, 19th April, and 17th May. Visit www.senspa.co.uk

Tried & Tested... RED NAIL VARNISH (12.02.10)
Wear your heart close to your sleeve this Valentine’s Day with our pick of vibrant red nail polishes.

OPI in RED MY FORTUNE COOKIE, £9.95 (www.lenawhite.co.uk)
What they say: East meets West with a vibrant clash of colour! Discover the “Gateway to the East” with OPI’s stunning new Spring Summer collection 2010, Hong Kong. China’s traditional good luck shade of red sizzles in Red My Fortune Cookie, a rich red which is in your future.
The Results: I’ve had OPI polishes applied in salon treatments before so I already knew the range had a wide variety of pigmented colours, quirky names, and quality finishes. What I was surprised about when trying this polish was how simple it was to use. I’ve always used the excuse that I have a less than steady hand as a way of justifying my salon manicures, but the packaging boasts a “patented pro-wide brush” which makes application quick and easy. This shade is a bright tomato orange-red, which would look really good with a tan or on darker skin tones. I’m now looking forward to discovering more shades from the range!
Best for: Ease of use

BOURJOIS 1 SECONDE NAIL POLISH in ROUGE PROFOND No. 8, £5.33 (Boots Nationwide)
What they say: One second nail polish from Bourjois. A single coat is all that is needed. Beautiful hands begin with polished nails.
The Results: I’m a huge fan of Bourjois makeup and own an impressive collection of their eyeshadows, yet have never tried their nail polishes. I’d seen the bottles in the shops so knew what to expect in terms of the packaging – but I was surprised at how the shape of the bottle, together with the slanted brush added to the ease of application. I’ve always been dubious of “quick-dry” polishes and upon closer inspection of the small print, read that the one second application relates to the time taken to apply using the specially designed brush and that drying time was 60 seconds, still incredibly fast! Personally, I felt that the colour required a couple of coats to achieve a strong enough colour - but as it really does touch-dry within a minute, this wasn’t a problem. The shade is a deep raspberry, which I’ll be able to wear year-round.
Best for: Speed

ESSIE in TURNING HEADS RED, £8.95 (www.nailsbymail.co.uk)
What they say: The Essie brand prides itself on offering award winning, fashion forward nail polish colours, unforgettable shade names, high quality formulas and a superior product selection.
The Results: I love nail polish, but this is more expensive than those I would normally use, so I was intrigued to try it. The formula of the polish was impressive - a little on the thin side, so I needed a couple of coats, but it didn’t bubble or streak and had a fine brush for precision application. The colour is a classic red with very subtle hints of pink, which I found surprisingly flattering to my skin tone. What impressed me the most was how long the colour lasted. It’s great to know that I can rely on Essie for lasting results.
Best for: Lasting results

LEIGHTON DENNY in INFATUATION, £10 (www.leightondenny.com)
What they say: Leighton Denny’s signature high performance nail colour is easy to apply, long lasting and chip resistant colour that doesn’t fade and keeps a high gloss shine day after day. Infatuation is the ideal shade this Valentine’s Day, warm and rich like a deep burgundy wine with a suggestion of brown tones.
The Results: I knew that Leighton Denny is regarded as one of the UK’s top nail technicians, but I wasn’t aware that he has his own signature range. The polish arrived elegantly presented in a transparent box and was a rich, vampish, red-wine shade, as opposed to a vibrant scarlet, which I instantly fell in love with. I found the smooth formula easy to apply without bubbles. I used two coats for depth of colour, but could probably get away with just one if I was in a hurry. I was impressed with how well the colour lasted, despite my daily use of the computer at work. My first impression of this range has been highly positive- the products have clearly been carefully thought out and invested in and I look forward to trying further items.
Best for: Luxury

ZOYA in CARMEN, £10 (www.zoyapolish.co.uk)
What they say: Zoya Nail Polish is the brainchild of Zoya Reyzis who, as a pregnant aesthetician and salon owner in 1984, realised the need for a healthier and more durable solution. All Zoya polishes are vegan friendly and free of toxic Toluene, Formaldehyde and DBP as well as being the longest wearing natural nail polishes available. Zoya polishes are made in the USA, poured in fine Italian glass with Spanish brushes.
The Results: I’d heard some scare stories about the ingredients in traditional nail polishes so was thrilled to be asked to trial Zoya’s “three-free” version. My first impression was one of surprise at how sleek the bottle looked and that there were no obvious nods to it being an “eco” product. The formula was a little thinner than I am accustomed to, so I needed to apply a couple of coats to achieve the desired coverage, but I was very impressed with the luxuriously smooth finish. The colour was long lasting and if I hadn’t been told otherwise, I’d say there is nothing to distinguish it from my usual polishes, which can only be a good thing! I’ll definitely be swapping some of my most-used shades to Zoya versions- apparently there are more than 200 colours in the range and am keen to try the additional products, such as base and top coat as well.
Best for: Green crendentials

MODELS OWN in RED ALERT, £5 (www.asos.com)
What they say: Stay on trend right down to the tips of your toes. All our nail polishes glide on smoothly and are hard-wearing and long lasting. Designed for fashion and fun, vamp it up with Red Alert.
The Results: I had never tried Models Own cosmetics, before so was intrigued to trial this polish. I admit that when I heard the price, I wasn’t convinced that I’d like the formula, as I tend to veer towards pricier polishes as a general rule. However, I was very pleasantly surprised. The packaging, with graphic font, is quite young in its appeal and is the only hint towards the price. Application was fuss-free, with no bubbles or streaking and I found that I only needed to apply one coat in order to gain full coverage. The shade is a vibrant, yet classic red with a high-gloss finish. At this price, I’ll be stocking up on a rainbow of colours for the new season!
Best for: Value for money

Feature: WE LOVE BEAUTY (12.02.10)
Sorry boys… This Valentines Day, the only thing we’re getting giddy over is beauty. We’ve asked six of our regular contributors to name the products, destinations, and services that get their hearts beating a little faster…

Chloe Luper, Beauty Journalist
I love the texture of Laura Mercier Mineral foundation. It feels so light and smooth on my skin and airbrushes out all my flaws. I don’t know how I ever coped without it.
I love cracking open a new pot of Pond’s Cold Cream Cleanser. It’s a vintage classic that I just can’t live without. It’s a miracle worker that does everything from cleansing, to moisturising, to eye-makeup removal.
I love visiting the Blink eyebrow bar. I have blonde eyebrows and never believed they could look defined and striking until I had them threaded. The best thing about the Blink eyebrow bars is that I can just drop in whenever I’m shopping in Selfridges and have them threaded, without worrying about booking an appointment.
I love the scent of Marc Jacobs Daisy. It’s the first perfume I’ve worn that everyone comments on. Even taxi drivers have remarked on how nice I smell!
I love painting my nails with Revlon Nail Enamel in No Shrinking Violet. It has a great rock chick edge that adds the perfect touch to any outfit.
I love climbing into a bath with Agent Provocateur Bubble Luscious Bath Foam. I love everything about this scrumptious product from the gorgeous bottle to the divine smell and the pink glittery liquid.
I love getting my hair done at Andrew Brown Hair Salon on Bermondsey Street, SE1. My darling hairdresser Steve cut my first ever fringe and does the most fantastic Cheryl Cole blow dry. He is my night out essential.
I love hearing about new launches because it means potential invites to fabulous beauty launches and meeting lots of other beauty buffs. The next launch I’m going too is Melvita and I can’t wait to try out their organic beauty range.
I love treating myself to Essential Herbology Detox Face Mask. It is the first mask I’ve ever used that actually delivers instant results, none of that gradual nonsense. Any spots or redness are dramtically reduced and it leaves my skin clean and refreshed.
I love hearing about a new launch from MAC makeup. It’s one of the trendiest brands on the market and I’m going to invest in one of every item from their Give Me Liberty range. MAC collaborating with Liberty – it’s a dream combination.

Astrid Mitchison, Freelance Writer

I love visiting Deborah Mitchell for her signature LIA Therapy facial. The combination of lymph drainage, incandescent massage and acupressure has been described as the natural alternative to a facelift, whilst the spiritual element ensures that I leave the treatment feeling revitalised inside and out. At home, I can’t live without HEAVEN Skin Polish Exfoliator from her range for maintaining a clear complexion.
I love painting my nails in front of a girlie DVD. My favourite brands are Chanel for a touch of luxury, Essie for lasting colour, and OPI for names that bring a smile to my face. Nail polish is my number one product for making me feel that my look is complete... I feel scruffy without it!
I love the scent of NEOM candles. The soothing blend of lavender, jasmine and Brazilian rosewood that comprises their Real Luxury candle is the perfect complement to a quiet night in.
I love the texture of REN Guerande Salt Exfoliating Body Balm. Applied before a bath or shower, it melts into dry skin whilst gently exfoliating and the scent of peppermint essential oil is just the thing to get me moving on sluggish mornings!
I love climbing into a bath with Aromatherapy Associates Bath & Shower Oils. Admittedly, they are pricey but with a high level of quality essential oils, they really work wonders. I like that they can also be applied directly to the body before a shower, which is ideal when I’m in a hurry.
I love discovering new brands. As a writer, I’m lucky enough to be kept updated with the latest launches but sometimes there’s nothing better than stumbling across a product or range unexpectedly. I lose track of time when wandering around the beauty halls of department stores, browsing in Space NK or trawling internet sites such as www.beautyexpert.co.uk
I love picking up a bargain from Bourjois. It’s a great way to try out new trends and still have change from £10. The quality of the makeup, given the price, never fails to amaze me and I’m obsessed with their adorable collectable pots.
I love indulging at home with Elemis products, particularly their bestselling Exotics range. It’s the easiest way to recreate a spa experience. The ritual of melting Frangipani Monoi Moisture Melt in hot water before applying the warm oil to skin makes me feel truly pampered.
I love treating myself to a new makeup bag every season. The quirky styles from Lulu Guinness are guaranteed to bring a smile to my face and encourage me to discover my inner glamour puss!

Louise Emma Clarke, Founding Editor
I love the scent of Origins’ new Starting Over Age-Erasing Moisturiser with Mimosa - it reminds me of those addictive strawberry Opal Fruits. It’s utterly delicious and I look forward to smoothing it over my skin every morning and evening.
I love visiting Babington House. The Cowshed spa is the ultimate indulgence – whilst the rooms are uber-stylish, the food to die for, and the grounds incredibly pretty. I could happily rock up with my removal van and move in permanently.
I love painting my nails with Chanel’s new Particulière Le Vernis. I wasn’t sure I liked the pale mushroom-brown when I first set eyes on it – but it is surprising pretty and wearable for spring.
I love climbing into a bath with Laura Mercier Crème Brulee Sugar Scrub (from Space NK). It smells incredible – and leaves my skin feeling unbelievably smooth. It’s a real indulgence.
I love the texture of Clinique Deep Comfort Body Butter – the thick, delicious texture makes me want to delve my hand right to the bottom of the pot. Textures are my biggest weakness – if it feels amazing, I want to own it. I love silky body oils, velvety foundations, crumbly bubble bars, and buttery lip balms.
I love getting my hair done at The Chapel, Tunbridge Wells. I was born in the town and still live there – so feel very lucky that a world-renowned salon is based 15 minutes walk from my house. Sitting by the fire on a huge squishy sofa while waiting for my colour to develop is a real indulgence – it definitely beats a salon chair!
I love hearing about a new launch from LUSH. I had a part-time job at the Southampton branch when I was at university – but to be honest, I’d have turned up for work even if they weren’t paying me. New launches from the brand excite me as much now as they did back then.
I love cracking open a new pot of Eve Lom Kiss Mix – my favourite lip balm. It looks so perfect when you first take the lid off – like virgin snow – and I can hardly bear to stick my finger in. But the first application is always the best.
I love treating myself to beauty treatments. I am religious about facials – I’ve had one every month for the last 10 years. I find them every bit as relaxing as a massage, yet there is the added benefit of leaving with perfect, glowing skin. To be honest though, I would settle for any treatment – body wrap, massage, hamman-style treatment, manicures, pedicures…

Lucy Quick, Beauty Writer
I love visiting the Dewa Spa in Phuket, Thailand. The spa is underground and filled with candles, waterfalls and water features. The pedicures are amazing and last for weeks and my coconut body massage left me feeling relaxed and refreshed. It’s amazing value for money.
I love painting my nails with the latest Nails Inc colour. I like mauve and nude colours at the moment, mainly because it’s not so obvious when they chip so I can be lazy and leave the same colour on for a week!
I love the scent Chanel Chance. I was bought a bottle for my 18th birthday and have been wearing it ever since. I love it when people say the smell reminds them of me. I’m guilty of overusing it though and seem to get through far too many bottles!
I love cracking open a new pot of Rosy Lips Vaseline. It’s a makeup must have. I love the pink colour and it fits easily in the smallest of bags. It’s perfect for an understated daytime gloss.
I love climbing into a bath with Jo Malone candles all around me. My bathroom is covered in candles because I think they create the most calming atmosphere. I also love Elemis bath lotion which smells fantastic and leaves my skin silky smooth.
I love curling my hair with my Babyliss Curling Wand. I’ve tried many times to curl my hair with straighteners, but it never works. This wand is the answer to my prayers. By simply wrapping a strand of hair around the wand for 5 seconds it creates the perfect messy bed-head curls.
I love having my eyebrows done - whether it’s waxed or threaded. People often forget their eyebrows but having them shaped makes such a big difference to your face. I try to make sure I have them done every six weeks.
I love treating myself to Guerlain’s Eclat Imperial Sublime Radiant Powder. The packaging is so dramatic and luxurious I love having it on my dressing table. The shimmer smells great and makes even the most boring black dress more fun. It’s pricey, but makes me feel gorgeous on a big night out so is worth every penny.

Becci Vallis, Beauty Journalist
I love the scent of D&G No 18 La Lune. Despite testing so many new fragrances, I sometimes struggle finding one that really suits my skin. This is definitely ‘the one’. It also brings back great memories of when I spent a month at Harper’s Bazaar, as it was a gift from their overflowing beauty cupboard.
I love the texture of Clarins’ eye pencil in black – it glides on seamlessly and is great for smudging too - an essential when you’re perfecting that smoky eye.
I love cracking open a new pot of face cream. It’s so satisfying lifting the lid and dipping your finger into the smooth, rich moisturiser.
I love hearing about a new launch from Philosophy. Don’t get me wrong, I love finding out about all the new makeup collections too, but Philosophy are always so quirky with their products and launches. Two years ago, the beauty press were invited along to a specially tailored cookery class where we got to ice and decorate individual cupcakes in celebration of their new red velvet cake shower gel. Not only did we leave with the products, we got to take home our apron and our cupcake handiwork!
I love visiting destination spas. They’re one of the only places I can really switch off. Amazing treatments, beautiful grounds and fresh food – what more could you ask for? If I can’t find time to get away, Liz Earle’s flagship store and spa comes a close second. It feels like a slice of the seaside in central London.
I love climbing into a bath with a cowshed candle burning in the background and bubbles courtesy of Origins Ginger Float.
I love getting my hair done at a salon I can trust. Being a bit of a hair whore, though, I rarely visit the same salon twice (it’s a tough job but someone’s got to do it). Saying that, I did discover The Chapel in Angel before Christmas and after having a fantastic ‘up-do’ fashioned in minutes, I plan to make a repeat visit super soon. The new Cutting Room Creative in Leeds is spot-on, too.
I love treating myself to a rehydrating facial. Since moving to London my skin never feels quite the same as when I lived in a tiny village, no matter how much I buff and moisturise it. I always try and choose a treatment that incorporates a facial massage - it’s the most relaxing thing ever.
I love being a beauty journalist because. I still get to feel like a teenager. After spending every weekend in Boots with my best friend, spending our pocket money on makeup and magazines and then going home to try out the latest looks, I now get to do it for a living. Nothing beats going backstage at Fashion Week and watching the hair and makeup pro’s work their magic on the models.

Claire Brayford, Fashion & Beauty Writer
I love the scent of 24 Faubourg by Hermes. It is such a warm, classic fragrance that gets even better the longer you wear it. I love discovering it on a scarf or knit when I have forgotten to spray it on myself - and that my mum used to wear it before I was born, which made it even nicer when I discovered it for myself in my 30’s.
I love the texture of a cool gel cream moisturiser – Clinique Moisture surge extended thirst relief is drinkably delicious - it feels like giving your skin a long hydrating soak and is next only to the gorgeous soft hair on my one-year-old nephew’s head.
I love cracking open a new tube of striking red lipstick. There is nothing quite like the pleasure of first twisting the flawless red waxy perfection especially when it’s by Estee Lauder in its retro gold case. Then I love applying it behind a gold compact like Hitchcock heroine Betty Draper in Mad Men.
I love hearing about a new launch from Bobbi Brown because it is always accompanied by samples, which is always a treat.
I love visiting The Spa at The Dorchester because it couldn’t be further from the hustle and stresses of central London from the glamorous décor to the soothing treatments.
I love painting my nails with Essie nail varnish – please – there is no other lacquer worth loving.
I love climbing into a bath with Miller Harris bath oil – any of the fragrances are delicious and fill the whole room - and my rubber ducks.
I love getting my hair done at Jo Hansford in Mount Street in London. Natalie is the only stylist I allow to cut or colour my hair. I am totally monogamous when it comes to hairdressers.
I love treating myself to Neutrogena Norwegian Formula hand-cream, because it is best I’ve ever found and makes my nails grow beautifully. I also love Flutter false eyelashes – I think they are better than surgery for giving your face a lift - and Ortigia Bergamot liquid soap because it looks so chic in my bathroom.

Feature: THE ALTERNATIVES (05.02.10)
Looking for a little extra from your beauty regime? We take a look at the products and treatments inspired by alternative therapies.

AYURVEDA
What is it? Ayurveda is an ancient Indian principle based on the belief that each and every one of us belongs to one of three dominant groups, Vata, Pitta and Kapha, collectively known as Doshas. Each of these has specific qualities: Vata is the leader of the doshas and is light, dry and resilient; Pitta is hot, ambitious and impatient whilst Kapha is oily, smooth and relaxed. Each dosha has a specific location and corresponding Chakra, or energy centre, within the body. These chakras must remain clear and balanced to maintain your wellbeing. The focus is upon prevention, rather than cure.
Famous followers? Supermodel and yoga addict, Christy Turlington is well known to incorporate ayurveda into her health and beauty regime, whilst Jennifer Aniston and Gwyneth Paltrow are also reportedly fans.
How can I try it? Aveda’s heritage is routed in the principle of ayurveda, in fact, its name is derived from the Sanskrit words “A” and “Veda” meaning “all” and “knowledge” respectively. Drawing upon this background and inspired by authentic traditions, Aveda have introduced Chakra, a range of Balancing Body Mists, £25 for 100ml (www.aveda.co.uk). The range has been formulated using specialty aromas, such as sandalwood, geranium and ylang ylang, and makes use of holistic massage therapy to harmonize and promote wellbeing.
On a budget? Natio, Australia’s fastest growing beauty brand, has recently launched in the UK. Their Pep-Up Body Cleanser, £8 for 210ml (Debenhams Nationwide) contains ayurvedic essences including organic ginkgo biloba, eucalyptus and peppermint. It’s seriously energising on winter mornings - and can also be used in the bath to clear congestion when you are feeling under the weather.

CHINESE MEDICINE
What is it? Dating back thousands of years, Chinese medicine has many guises including herbal medicine, acupuncture and shiatsu massage. The basis behind the philosophy is that we all have an intimate relationship with the environment and are influenced by its changes. Theory states that health and beauty are inextricably linked; balance and wellbeing must be achieved to be reflected on our outward appearance.
Famous followers? Elle Macpherson and Gisele Bundchen are said to keep their enviable bodies in tip-top shape via Chinese medicine.
How can I try it? The founder of Elemental Herbology, Kristy Goodger, is trained in traditional Chinese medicine, which, in turn, has influenced the range. Over her years of study and professional experience, Kristy observed how the elements interlink and how our bodies are constantly striving to achieve a state of equilibrium. Her range is split by winter and summer with the intention to restore balance from the effects of environmental, seasonal and lifestyle aggressors. If months of bitterly cold weather and central heating have wreaked havoc on your skin, try Purify and Soothe Cleansing Balm, £25 for 75ml (www.spacenk.co.uk) – the creamy balm gently cleanses skin and melts away every trace of makeup.
Look out also for Wei Beauty (from £15), launching exclusively in Space NK this February. Originating in China, Wei has become one of the largest beauty ranges in the US to be inspired by traditional Chinese medicine and ingredients. It is comprised of a variety of skincare products to suit all needs and is set to be one of the most hotly anticipated launches of this year when it arrives on our shores next month.

AROMATHERAPY
What is it? Probably the form of alternative therapy that we are most familiar with, aromatherapy is based on the use of powerful plant extracts to positively influence the body and mind. Plants have been employed since the first century for their healing properties and as the current trend towards natural beauty continues to grow, we are increasingly returning to these roots. Popular essential oils worth looking out for include lavender for relaxation, rosemary to invigorate, or jasmine for sensuality.
Famous followers? Kate Moss, Sienna Miller and Erin O’Connor are all reportedly fans of aromatherapy.
How can I try it? NEOM Organics, formerly Natural Magic, lead the way in luxury aromatherapy with an emphasis upon effective treatment, rather than simply pampering. Their range of Bath Oils, £32 for 100ml (www.neomorganics.com) is just the thing for indulging in cosy nights in, with the highest essential oil percentage that can legally be included at 30% for optimum benefits.
For a purse-friendly alternative, head to The Body Shop. Their range offers the perfect introduction, with the benefits clearly listed on the packaging - so there’s no need to get to grips with the many different essential oils before you start shopping. Deep Sleep Dreamy Pillow & Body Mist, £10 for 100ml (www.thebodyshop.co.uk) is easy to use before bedtime to promote a restful night’s sleep – whilst if you’re feeling sluggish, Total Energy Pulse Point Balm, £8 for 15ml can be applied on the go or used at your desk to re-energize.

REFLEXOLOGY
What is it? Reflexology is based on the theory that by applying pressure to specific points on the feet, you will positively affect other parts of the body. The hands or ears can also be used. The practise is believed to have originated up to five thousand years ago and although relaxing, should not be confused with a standard foot massage due to the specialist techniques and body mapping involved.
Famous followers? Members of the Royal Family are said to have reflexology treatments and this regal link is nothing new- Egyptian Queen Cleopatra reportedly relied upon reflexology too!
How can I try it? Reflosocks, £16.40 (www.victoriahealth.com) have been developed by a qualified reflexologist, incorporating padding to apply pressure to key, targeted areas. They are an easy way to gain the benefits of reflexology in the comfort of your own home, as Shabir Daya, Resident Pharmacist at VicoriaHealth.com, explains, “Reflexology works on the longitudinal lines that come from the head and end up in the feet. Putting pressure on these lines in the feet facilitates the healing process in the body as well as regaining energy. Reflexology is not intended to diagnose an illness nor to cure it – it simply facilitates the healing process, for example the Reflexology Socks work on putting pressure on the lines that work to generally increase energy levels, calm the body and are wonderful for back aches etc.” The socks are available in two sizes, medium and large, are machine washable and can be worn with shoes or instead of slippers.

ACUPUNCTURE & ACUPRESSURE
What is it? With its origins in traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture is the process of inserting and manipulating small needles into specific areas of the face or body along lines of energy flow. It is believed to have many health benefits, including aiding fertility and pain relief. Acupressure is derived from acupuncture but uses physical pressure to manipulate and stimulate key points, without the use of needles.
Famous followers? Madonna has been cited as using acupuncture, whereas Dannii Minogue swore off Botox after discovering Heaven treatments.
How can I try it? Annee de Mamiel is one of the UK’s leading authorities on acupuncture, specialising in facial treatments to leave clients looking and feeling more vibrant and balanced. De Mamiel Facial Acupuncture (75 minutes at The Method Spa, Home House, price upon application) combines the insertion of needles into both the face and body, massage, and use of bespoke oils to invigorate skin. Clients are offered a medicinal tea and a personalised facial oil blend for use following the treatment. To gain a taste of the experience in the comfort of your own home, try De Mamiel Winter Oil for the Face, £65 for 25ml (www.demamiel.com), a blend of nurturing antioxidants and omegas - but hurry, the oils have been created in a limited edition of just one hundred bottles.
Founder of the Heaven range, Deborah Mitchell has worked her healing hands on celebrities including Dannii Minogue and Emilia Fox. Her signature facial, LIA Therapy, from £65 for 1hour 15 minutes (www.heavenskincare.com) incorporates a spiritual element that is inspired by the belief that you need to achieve a state of deep relaxation and contentment for healing to take place and the subsequent physical results to appear. The treatment combines lymph drainage, incandescent massage and acupressure to leave skin looking revitalised, hence the name. Based in London at the prestigious Hale Clinic, it’s just the thing when feeling out of sorts- highly recommended!

OTHER THERAPIES
Still not convinced? There are plenty of quirky, alternative therapies if you’re looking for something a little different.
Lush have recently opened therapy rooms within selected stores, offering holistic treatments. The signature treatment, Synaesthesia Massage, £125 for 1hour 30 minutes, (www.lush.co.uk) works on a sensory level to subconsciously impact your mood. The massage has been developed in collaboration with composer, Simon Emmerson and behavioural therapist, Lady Helen Kennedy to incorporate complementary music, colour and essential oils. Clients discuss their objectives during a pre-treatment consultation, for example to be energised or to possess greater self-confidence, and every element of the treatment is tailored accordingly.
For a home treatment, look no further than Shakti Mat, £63 (www.victoriahealth.com), a modern day version of the Indian bed of nails. Whilst the mat may seem intimidating at first, it’s surprisingly relaxing to lie on the cotton and plastic spike covered foam pad. It works by stimulating over 6,000 pressure points to release endorphins, the body’s feel-good chemicals and boost circulation thereby relieving tension, aiding meditation and improving insomnia.
Other treatments include Hot Stone Therapy, Reiki, Light Therapy, Alexander Technique, Colour Therapy, Cupping, Crystal Healing to name a few- why not check them out? The only pre-requisite is an open mind!

Tried &Tested: REJUVENATING SERUMS (05.02.10)
Give dull winter skin a boost, with a rejuvenating serum. We’ve put six to the test…

GREEN & SPRING RESTORING FACE SERUM, £38 (http://greenandspring.com)
What they say: This is a rejuvenating facial treatment packed with high performing essential oils, extracts and active ingredients that ensure maximum penetration and absorption. Rose geranium and chamomile combine to balance, repair and rejuvenate whilst moisturising sunflower and carrot oil, plentiful in antioxidants vitamin A, E and D, enrich and soften.
The Results: I loved the packaging, but I was a bit worried when I first squeezed the pump bottle onto my finger as the serum is bright orange! Thankfully, as soon as I massaged it into my skin, it became clear. The scent is absolutely stunning – a beautiful mix of essential oils (I could definitely smell rose) – and the texture is very rich and silky. However, it is also quite heavy, so it might not be a good choice for those with oilier complexions. My dry skin loved it – it absorbed quickly and left it feeling supple and moisturised. The best bit was how soft it left it feeling – I can’t ever remember my skin feeling that good! I am using it every night before bed and after nearly a month, my skin still feels as soft and looks lovely and glowing.
Best for: Dry skin

JO MALONE PROTEIN SKIN SERUM, £55 (www.jomalone.co.uk)
What they say: A concentrated, easily absorbed repair serum infused with pure protiens and antioxidants which help to improve the texture of the skin, softening fine dehydration lines and working to restore a healthy, dewy complexion. This serum is oil free, suiting all skin conditions.
The Results: I’ve been using this lightweight, cooling serum since Christmas – the cold weather and overindulgence left my skin looking and feeling horrible, so it arrived at the perfect time. I loved the packaging – the stylish box and dropper applicator give the product a luxury feel – and I found it quick and easy to add into my skincare regime, as it absorbed within seconds. I noticed it starting to make a difference after just a few days as my skin felt more balanced and better hydrated. After a few weeks, I was convinced that the fine lines were less noticeable (an unexpected bonus). I really recommend this product for anybody who wants to add radiance to their skin – if they have been ill, forgotten to drink lots of water, or been in the sunshine. I wish I could afford to make it part of my usual skincare regime!

Best for: Dehydrated skin

ELEMIS PRO-COLLAGEN QUARTZ LIFT SERUM, £95 (www.timetospa.co.uk)
What they say: The jewel of the Pro-Collagen Collection, Elemis Pro-Collagen Quartz Lift Serum contains the purest concentration of the marine extract Padina Pavonica in addition to precious minerals Quartz and Rhodochrosite to improve cellular performance and natural cell defence mechanisms. This powerful, light serum imparts an immediate lifting and firming effect on the skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
The Results: I’m in my late 40’s and I’m starting to notice that the lines around my eyes and mouth getting more obvious. I liked this product - it had a lightweight, silky texture – and although it felt a bit sticky initially, it wasn’t long before it had absorbed into my skin. I also loved the scent – it smelt luxurious and expensive, which made applying it a real treat. I’ve been using it twice daily for a month now – and whilst there are no dramatic changes, I have noticed that the texture of my skin is more balanced and radiant. The lines seem slightly less obvious, but I’m not sure whether this is because my skin is better hydrated or whether it has actually faded them. Either way, I will definitely continue to use this product as it’s definitely made an improvement to my skin.
Best for: Fine lines and wrinkles

BOBBI BROWN INTENSIVE SKIN SUPPLEMENT, £37 (www.bobbibrown.co.uk)
What they say: An advanced, multi-benefit serum that improves skin's appearance as it helps prevent the visible signs of aging. White Birch Extract reduces the look of fine, dry lines, while Grape Extract helps clarify and brighten the complexion. After just four weeks' use, skin looks firmer, smoother, more even-toned and radiant. Dermatologist-tested. Non-acnegenic.
The Results: Other than the packaging – which is very stylish – there isn’t much that initially stands out about this product. The texture is lightweight, there’s no fragrance, and it didn’t seem to give any instant results. However, I’ve been using the milky-coloured product for a month now – and I’m impressed with the way it has brightened my skin tone and added a healthy radiance. And whilst it didn’t happen straight way, it also feels a lot softer and smoother. A little goes a very long way – and the dropper bottle made it easy to apply the perfect pea-sized amount – so despite the price tag, I think it’s good value. You have to be patient with this product and make sure you apply it twice daily – but it’s well worth the extra effort, as the results really pay off.
Best for: Adding radiance

NEAL’S YARD REJUVENATING FACIAL SERUM, £39.50 (www.nealsyeardremedies.com)
What they say: A light and easily absorbed intensive serum combining rejuvenating frankincense and gotu kola with antioxidant-rich blueberry oil and skin brightening turmeric. Skin appears firmer and more radiant with improved skin tone and is protected against the ageing effects of oxidative stress.
The Results: This serum has an interesting texture – it looks like milk – and feels cooling and soothing as its massaged into skin. I wasn’t keen on the scent at first, as it’s quite spicy and strong, but it tones down as it absorbs. I used this serum both morning and night for a month – applying it after cleansing, but before my regular moisturiser. I started to notice that my complexion was looking healthier and more radiant after a couple of weeks – one of my friends even commented on how great my skin was looking. I am so impressed with the results that I have stopped applying foundation for daywear and am instead using just pressed powder and a touch of concealer. I feel much more confident about my skin and would strongly recommend it.
Best for: Visibly brightening Skin

CLARINS MULTI-ACTIVE SKIN RENEWAL SERUM, £43.01 (http://uk.clarins.com)
What they say: Restores new youthfulness to stressed skin, marked by early wrinkles, thanks to the renewal action of Nopal flower extract and Phytosphingosine.
The Results: I love Clarins products, so was pleased to be handed this product to test – especially when I read that it promised to make me look younger! I liked the pump tube, which delivered the perfect amount for one application. The lightweight, creamy serum had a lovely fragrance, which reminded me of delicate talcum powder, and felt lovely and soothing as I applied it to my skin. It absorbed almost instantly and left my complexion looking matte – which is great, as my skin is prone to looking a little shiny. After a month of using it, I must admit that there are no huge changes to my skin – but I do think it looks slightly smoother and more even-toned. It’s a real pleasure to use, so I will definitely continue to apply it morning and night.
Best for: Oily complexions

Salon Review: HOB SALONS, CAMDEN LOCK, LONDON (05.02.10)
Location: Unit 3b, 28 Jamestown Road, Camden Lock, London NW1 7BY. 0207 4857272. www.hobsalons.com
The Salon: HOBS Salons is situated just a stone’s throw from the eclectic, colourful hues of Camden market – but inside, it feels like another world. The stylish monotone colour palette, mixed with splashes of coffee-coloured wood and butter-soft black leather, feels cool and spacious – and the ambience is buzzing, but not hectic. This is Camden, so you can expect to see a few quirky hairstyles – piles of pink, blue and green hair are swept up as readily as blonde or brunette – but you are just as likely to bump into a supermodel, housewife strolling down from Primrose Hill, or smart professional on their lunch break. The beauty of this salon is that anything goes - and whoever you are, the staff are equally warm, friendly, and eager to please.
When it comes to hair – which of course if the main reason you will jump on the Northern Line to get here – the standards are outstanding. The colourists and stylists are so experienced that they can identify what will suit you in a matter of seconds. My colourist - Creative Colour Director, Christel Lundqvist (2008 British Colour Technician of the Year) - used an interiors magazine to show me me the depth of brown in a wooden cabinet, which she explained would suit my complexion better than my current shade. Where as my stylist - Manager Sean Dawson (NHF Hairdresser of the Year 2009/Fashion Focus Image of the Year 2009) – gave my hair volume, style, and movement that I never thought possible.
HOBS Salons will impress, surprise, and delight in one fell swoop. Step out of the salon, into the buzz of Camden Lock, and you will feel like a glamorous celebrity – and lets face it, you could well be brushing past one at the door.
Services: Cuts from £37.50 for women and from £23.50 for men, Blow-Dries from £20.50, Highlights from £52.50, Tinting from £35.50, Treatments from £10, Permanent Waves from £61.50, Brazilian Smoothing Treatment from £150, Wellastrate from £56.50, and Human Hair Extensions (on quotation).

Editor’s Letter (05.02.10)
Now that it’s gone for another year, I can finally say it… I hate January – it’s the worst month in the year and I am thrilled to see the back of it. It’s partly because I’m such a fan of the festive season, partly because there’s nothing going on and money is tight, and partly because the weather is cold, dark, and usually wet. But February – well, that’s another matter. Despite the arctic weather conditions, there’s a sense of spring in the air… London Fashion Week is just a couple of weeks away and the fashionistas will be out in force, wearing spring/summer trends from head to foot – whatever the weather throws at them. Valentines Day is next week – which gives us an excuse to paint our pouts in passionate shades of red and fill our homes with the sweet perfume of roses (whether we are coupled-up or not). And better still, the countdown has begun to March when (praise be) the clocks be springing forward - I can practically see the queues forming to get into those pub gardens (the date is March 28th if you want to scribble it in your diary). This week, I am celebrating the demise of January by spritzing my wrists with Clarins Sunshine Fragrance and painting my nails in the softest pastel pink – my hands might be shivering from the cold, but they look so much better for it.

Aveda. Valentines Day is just around the corner – so start hinting that you would like to unwrap a bottle of Aveda’s stunning new fragrance: LOVE (£20). Don’t be fooled by the small 7ml rollerball bottle – a little of this delicious scent goes a very long way. The name is perfect, as I have instantly fallen head over heels for the intoxicating blend of sensuous wood (Sandalwood), romantic florals (Jasmine, Rose, Ylang Ylang and Bergamot) and exotic spices (Frankincense and Myrrh). The size is convenient too – fitting into the smallest clutch on a girly night out or passing airline regulations if you are being whisked away to Paris for the weekend (oh, I can only dream). www.aveda.co.uk

Vaseline. I first found out about Vaseline’s Sheer Infusion Body Lotion (£4.99) in 2009 and have been dying to tell you about the product ever since, but it was under a strict embargo. The lotion works to hydrate skin using Stratys-3™ technology – meaning that moisture is suspended across each layer of our skin – the top, the core, and deep down Believe me, it really works. I’ve been applying it to my legs every night before bed – and in the morning, they feel so well hydrated that it feels like I have just massaged in a rich body oil. You have to try it to believe it – and I strongly recommend you do. Exclusively at Boots.

LUSH. I was gutted when LUSH’s sister brand B Never Too Busy to Be Beautiful closed at the end of last year. This week, however, I received a package containing a couple of the brand’s products - now repackaged and relaunched under the LUSH product range. I predict empty LUSH shelves, as these were two of B’s most successful sellers. Pick from three sweet-scented Lip Scrubs (£4.50 each) that slough away flaky skin for a smooth, kissable pout – and the pot of deliciously-scented Crème Anglais Body Cream (£25) for silky-soft, ultra-hydrated skin. Now LUSH, please can you revive all my favourite B perfumes too? www.lush.co.uk

Garnier. If you are a fan of Garnier’s Caffeine Roll-On (and lets face it, most of the world are, with one now sold every 15 seconds worldwide), you are going to be uber-excited about the brand’s latest launch. The Caffeine Anti-Dark Circles 2-in-1 Eye Roll-On (£9.99) refreshes and hydrates tired-looking eyes, whilst covering dark circles with mineral pigment. It’s essentially a concealer, with some very big bonuses. I’ve tried it – and found it cooling, soothing, and very effective. It only comes in one shade – a mid-beige, which I thought would be too dark for my skin, but it became translucent as it was applied to skin. Exclusively at Boots.

Head & Shoulders. Haircare brand Head & Shoulders has come a long way… It’s no longer a brand to turn to only when your scalp becomes flaky and irritated – but a brand that you can trust for your everyday haircare needs. I’ve been testing their new Hydrating Smooth & Silky Shampoo and Conditioner (both £1.89) and I’m really impressed. The secret is two ingredients - Dimethicone and Guar – which infuse the hair with moisture, leaving it feeling incredibly soft-to-the-touch. I still don’t think I’d be overly confident parading my bottles at the gym or swimming pool – but behind closed doors, they have pride of place on my bathroom shelf. Stockists Nationwide.

Blog: KATIE MAY – FROM YING YANG SKINCARE – BLOGS ABOUT DAILY SKINCARE REGIMES (05.02.10)

Looking after my skin is a simple routine, which I have followed for the past 36 years. It was my interest in keeping my own skin as young as possible for as long as possible that led to the research and development of the Yin Yang Skin Care health and beauty products. In the early seventies – just entering my thirties - I was curious to find the best way to condition my skin.

With an understanding of food ingredients, I was sure that edible plants held the key. From the beginning I instinctively knew that acidic plant oils, plant proteins (from soya, wheat and coconut) and fruits were good ingredients. I took a look at standard cosmetic ingredients and detergents and decided not to work with them. My innocent instinct at that time told me that if you could eat an ingredient, it would not harm you. Choosing constituents that were mildly acidic, like apple, orange and coconut there was a kind and cruelty free aspect but also an important scientific facet to the formulations. Because all proteins are alkaline, I learned a natural (non chemical) way to make the Soya protein acidic and blended them all together into lotions, creams and masks. Yin Yang Skin Care was born and developed.

Now, my days are rather busy, with lots of time in front of the computer screen, writing and organising formulae. As much as possible I like to get outside into my herb gardens, walking with Amie (my terrier) and helping some young friends of mine with their dressage.

My skincare routine is simple, with mildly acidic cleansing as the corner stone of lasting good skin- a very thorough cleansing starts my day. This is followed with a lovely soft Skin Tonic spray, which softens and moisturises even the finest skin around the eyes. Then it is simply a question of choosing the best cream to moisturise and feed – some of us need more protein than others and this depends on lifestyle (including diet, environment and hormonal changes). This makes a fascinating lifelong study.

If sitting at my desk, I leave my skin to breathe but if I go outside into sunny weather, I will use the Yin Yang pH-Amino Gold Defence Lotion under a light liquid make-up and cover up with light cotton clothes and a big floppy cotton hat. My choice is to avoid the “factor” creams, because I do not like their ingredients, so I take the “cover up” option.

The Yin Yang pH-Amino Gold Lotion is equally good in harsh winter weather. When I was younger (with use of the Face Mask twice a month), that was the routine, which suited me. Nowadays I use the Yin Yang Kaolin Face Mask more regularly because it helps with the exfoliation and any excesses of protein. Also I have needed to use a protein cream from time to time. Sometimes this is Yin Yang’s Wild Yam Cream, if I feel in need of an energy boost or Yin Yang Rich Skin Food, which suits my fine skin type. The Yin Yang Joint Cream with MSM is my all over body treatment, not only dealing with the odd “twinge” but moisturising and nourishing at the same time. Towards the end of the day, I repeat the morning thorough cleanse and tone routine and (if I feel the need) will use a little Yin Yang Rich Skin Food.
My daily beauty treatment is simple to use and has made my skin feel both alive and pampered for almost 40 years!
