TRIED & TESTED: WARMING BATH PRODUCTS (29.01.10)
Sink into a tub infused with warming bath products on cold evening this winter… We’ve put six to the test…

ORIGINS GINGER FLOAT CREAM BUBBLE BATH, £21 (www.origins.co.uk)
What they say: Feel the purifying-powers of pungent Ginger warm and invigorate weary, dreary body skin while the citrusy-crisp scent of lush, lighthearted Lemon, Lime and Bergamot lifts listless spirits. There's no zestier way to shoo your malaise.
The Results: I didn’t have high hopes for this product when I first set eyes on it – the pot is quite plain and so is the creamy, white product inside. Since cracking open the lid, however, I have learnt not to judge things on their appearance. The ginger scent is strong, sweet, and warming. The gel is too thick to pour into the bath, so you need to scoop it out with hands – not something I enjoyed, but the results were worth it. It created the perfect amount of bubbles to sink into and the lovely scent filled the entire bathroom. Better still, after stepping out, my skin had picked up the fragrance and I could still smell it on my skin the following morning. This product is perfect for the coldest nights, when you really need to warm up before bed.
Best for: Strong, long-lasting scent

LIFE NK MIDNIGHT MILK SOAK, £18 (www.spacenk.co.uk)
What they say: No more sleepless nights: This sugar based bath soak leaves skin silky soft whilst lilly geranium and violet on a base of sweet ceder and vanilla help you drift away.

The Results: I was quite surprised when I poured this under the tap. I was expecting it to be lavender-based, as with most bedtime bath products, so was really pleased to discover that the thin, milky soak had a sweeter, more floral fragrance. As soon as I stepped into the cloudy water, I started to feel my muscles ease and mind relax. I could have stayed in there for hours, but when I did climb out, I was thrilled that my skin felt so incredibly silky-soft – thanks to the blend of softening oils in the milk. I felt much warmer after the bath – and I’m sure that wasn’t just due to the temperature of the water. I’d recommend it.
Best for: Softening skin

LUSH THE COMFORTER, £3.95 (www.lush.co.uk)
What they say: A warming, fruity, fluffy bath to bring you comfort. When the world seems too scary and your problems seem insurmountable, that's when you need The Comforter's warm, blackcurrant embrace. Take a long, soothing bath, have a good night's sleep, and when the day dawns, things won't seem quite so bad.
The Results: I’ve tried Lush’s solid bubble bars before – you crumble a small amount under a warm running tap and it froths up like bubble bath. I find it quite messy, but I like the fact they are environmentally friendly with no plastic packaging. This bubble bar smelt delicious – like blackberries and cream – and I only needed about a fifth of the total bar to create a lovely amount of bubbles, so it’s great value for money too. The scent is long-lasting – the bathroom still smelt lovely hours later – and could definitely smell traces on my skin after climbing out the bath. The remaining bubble bar made a bit of a mess of the side of the bath, so I’d recommend placing it on a soap dish.
Best for: Good value

ABAHNA Frankincense & Sweet Orange Bath Foam, £22 (www.abahna.co.uk)
What they say: Luxurious bath foam, fragranced using nothing but essential oils to turn your bath into a feast for the senses. Made with organic wild flower honey, aloe vera and chamomile to protect the skin and leave your body soft and glowing.
The Results: I felt very smug when I was handed this product – it is presented in a beautiful box with ribbon and looks stylish and expensive. One sniff and my opinion didn’t change – I could tell that the rich, warming fragrance was essential-oil based, so when I found out the price I wasn’t surprised. It’s more expensive that I would usually dream of spending on a bath product – but on the plus side, I only needed to pour a small amount in to create lots of foam, so it would last a long time. I think it’d make a brilliant gift too. I loved every second of wallowing in the bath – and definitely felt warmer, more relaxed, and far sleepier when I stepped out.
Best for: The luxury buy

PHILOSOPHY CINNAMON BUNS SHAMPOO, SHOWER GEL, AND BUBBLE BATH, £14.50 (www.hqhair.com)
What they say: Philosophy cinnamon buns is a highly indulgent treat designed to soothe and moisturise the body, giving you world-class, silky smooth skin from head to toe. this dreamy formula will nourish the driest of skin leaving it smelling and feeling absolutely heavenly!
The Results: I’m a big fan of Philosophy – and this product is no exception. The packaging is simple, yet stylish, and the products always smell good enough to eat. I love the smell of cinnamon – which is lucky, as the scent of this product is very powerful – and couldn’t wait to head upstairs and run a bath. I poured a small amount of the silky gel under the running tap and waited as it created the perfect amount of foam – enough to create a relaxing experience, but not enough to engulf me! I was impressed by how quickly it filled the bathroom with the sweet scent of cinnamon buns. The best thing about this product is that it can be used as a shower gel and shampoo as well – so by the time I climbed out the bath, I smelt delicious from head-to-toe!
Best for: Multi-tasking

TISSERAND MUSCLE EASE BATH OIL, £7.50 (www.tisserand.com)
What they say: Helps to revive muscles and joints after workouts, sports or general over-exertion. Can also be used prior to activity or simply to melt away everyday tension / fatigue. Contains fortifying organic ginger oil, relieving organic lemongrass oil, and stimulating organic rosemary oil.

The Results: I was a bit worried when I received this product to test, as I associate muscle-easing products with the overpowering scent of Deep Heat. One sniff though and I was reassured, as this smells sweet, spicy, and really warming. I was quite happy to step into a bath infused with a few glugs of the silky oil – especially after a long run, when my legs felt like jelly. Having a bath always helps to soothe my muscles after exercise, so I can’t vouch for how much impact the bath oil had – but I found the whole experience incredibly luxurious and definitely felt warm and cosy when I climbed out. The price is great too – the quality is great, so I was expecting this to have a designer price-tag.

Best for: After exercise

Feature: HIT THE SLOPES (29.01.10)
Heading to the slopes this season? Get ready for the plunging temperatures and bright sunshine with our pick of piste-perfect beauty products.

FACE
On the mountain, your face is the only patch of skin that is left uncovered to the elements. While you are cutting up the slopes, your skin is coping with blizzards, sub-zero temperatures, and harsh sunshine.
Your usual skincare regime just won’t do… Instead, you should pack a range of skincare products that will prepare your skin for the slopes by infusing it with long-lasting moisture – and those will help to repair and revive it when are relaxing après ski.
Avant-Ski: Swap your regular cleanser for Clarins Extra-Comfort Cleansing Cream, £17 (http://uk.clarins.com), which will hydrate as it cleanses. The rich, creamy texture will help keep skin supple and comfortable on the slopes. Then follow with an intensive day cream, such as Ole Henriksen Skin Insulator SPF15, £30 (www.feelunique.com), which contains borage and grapeseed oils to deeply nourish and protect skin – or Bobbi Brown Extra SPF25 Moisturising Balm, £55 (www.bobbibrown.co.uk) which has a rich, luxurious texture, thanks to generous infusions of Shea Butter, Aloe, and Petrolatum, and leaves skin feeling supple and beautifully soft.
Apres Ski - At the end of the day, treat yourself to a home facial with products that will nourish, soothe, and replace lost moisture. Steer away from harsh, abrasive scrubs that may irritate weather-beaten skin – and instead, opt for a rich mask, such as Sanctuary Moisture Boosting Mask, £9.99 (www.thesanctuary.co.uk) or Jurlique’s Moisture Replenishing Mask, £30 (www.jurlique.co.uk), to soothe and rebalance your complexion. Finally, soothe rough patches of skin with an intensive balm – which can be left on overnight for maximum hydration. We love REN’s Mayday Mayday Rescue Balm, £20 (www.renskincare.com) – a thick, uber-intensive balm that smells incredible and instantly smoothes and hydrates the complexion.

SUNCARE
If you haven’t covered your face in a high-factor, broad-spectrum sun cream, don’t even consider sliding your feet into those ski boots.
Dr Jonathan Bowling, consultant dermatologist at the Radcliffe Trust, Oxford, and London's Cadogan Clinic, explains: You see people come back from ski holidays with panda eyes, where their skin has burnt. That is sun damage and can lead to cancer.”

He continues: “Skiing is a fantastic sport and good for general fitness, but a lot of people forget the effect that the winter sun can have on their skin. When you're up a mountain, at altitude, your level of UV exposure is higher than at ground level, so you're soaking up the radiation. Normally features such as grass and trees absorb the UV, but when those features are covered in snow not only are they not absorbing the UV, the snow cover itself is bouncing the UV back at you."

Avant-Ski: Apply an SPF that offers broad-spectrum protection (meaning that it blocks UVA and UVB rays). One of the beauty industry’s best-respected brands for sun protection is Sisley – and their Broad Spectrum Facial Sunscreen SPF50, £89 (0207 591 6380) would suit the slopes perfectly.

Other great brands to look out for are Piz Buin, whose Mountain range offers 24-hour protection against sunshine, wind, and plunging temperatures – try their Mountain Suncream SPF50, £8.99 (Boots Nationwide)– and ultrasun, a swiss brand that offers suncare that is free from perfume, oil and emulsifiers – we love their High SPF30 Face, £29.26 (www.qvcuk.com) which has a rich, anti-ageing formula.

HAIR
Hat hair, anyone? Whether you are exposing your locks to the elements or hiding it under a bobble hat day after day, the chances are that it isn’t in great condition. Your hair is screaming for a shot of intensive moisture.
Apres-Ski: Highly-moisturising hair products can be daunting for anyone with fine or oily hair – but now is the time to consider switching over. Pantene Pro V’s Repair & Protect Shampoo and Conditioner, both £2.19 (Boots Nationwide) would be the ideal choice for holidays in the white stuff. The combination work to restore the natural moisture balance of your locks – deeply hydrating, without weighing it down. It also helps protect hair against future damage, so you can head off to the slopes reassured about the health of your barnet.
Follow your shampoo and conditioner with an intensive hair treatment – which can be increased to daily use throughout your holiday to protect and condition your locks. Fekkai’s Protein Rx PM Repair Strengthener, £49 (www.spacenk.co.uk) is a wise investment. It contains soy and milk protein to prevent breakage and rebuild strength. It has a tempting tropical fragrance, which makes appliance a real treat.
The pocket-friendly choice is Aussie 3 Minute Miracle, £4.88 (www.boots.com), which contains Safflower Seed Oil to mend split ends and smooth cuticles. It boasts Aussie’s signature minty fragrance – and it’s quick, which means there’s more time to enjoy those fondues and mulled wine.

LIPS
Don’t allow your otherwise-immaculate pout to become dehydrated, flaky, or chapped. Invest in a high-quality, intensive lip balm – and reapply regularly!
Avant and Apres-Ski: There are few lip balms more luxurious and intensive than Crème de la Mer’s The Lip Balm, £36 (www.cremedelamer.co.uk), which contains an infusion of the brand’s potent Miracle Broth, along with a patented Lip Liquid Complex to deliver moisture and help prevent further damage. It has a refreshing minty fragrance and feels soothing as it’s applied. Leave it at the chalet – this pot is too good to drop from the ski lift.

On the Slopes: Keep a lip balm that contains a high SPF in your jacket pocket. Dermalogica’s Solar Shield SPF15, £11 (0800 917 7147) can be applied to lips, nose and ears – and it’s water-resistant, so great if you get trapped in a blizzard or take a tumble. Beauty junkies will love md formulation’s Sun Lip Balm, SPF20, £9 (www.feelunique.com), which contains an indulgent blend of Vitamin E, Aloe, Shea Butter, and Sunflower Oil – along with broad-spectrum sun protection.

BODY
The body is our temple – and it is also the key to a successful day on the slopes. Move aside your salopettes and ski goggles – and make room in your suitcase for some luxury muscle soothers and rehydrating body products.
Apres-Ski: Slide into a bath infused with Life NK’s Muscle Relief Bath Soak, £18 (www.spacenk.co.uk) – a luxurious, relaxing blend of Dead Sea salts and aromatherapy oils to ease tired muscles and mind. Or, if you prefer relaxing in bath oil, pick Aromatherapy Associates De-Stress Bath & Shower Oil, £37.45 (www.aromatherapyassociates.com) - a delicious blend of lavender, rosemary and ginger essential oils.
Then, slather a moisture-rich body wash over skin – we love Elemental Herbology’s Velvet Skin Winter Body Wash, £20 (www.spacenk.co.uk), which comes with a gentle exfoliating body mitt to slough away dry, flaky skin.
After drying off, massage Elemis’ Musclease Active Body Concentrate, £30 (www.timetospa.co.uk) into tired limbs. The silky body oil contains stimulating maritime pine, seakbuckthorn, sea fennel and rosemary to ease muscle spasm and relax stressed joints.
Finally, the cold will be stripping the moisture from your mitts too, so invest in a high-quality hand cream to keep them in good condition. Sisley’s new Confort Extreme Nutritive Hand Care, £55 (0207 5916380) is ideal for wintery conditions – it contains a blend of powerfully-hydrating plant extracts, including guava, carrot, and sunflower oil.

AFTERCARE
So, you’ve arrived home with a refreshed body and mind, newly-toned muscles, and the overwhelming urge to book your next trip to the slopes… But your skin probably feels slightly tighter, complexion appears rosier, and your limbs will be crying out for a healthy dose of relaxation…
At Home: In the week’s following your trip, help to keep your skin deeply hydrated with generous slatherings of soothing and repairing moisturisers, such as Clinique’s Comfort on Call Relief Cream, £35 (www.clinique.co.uk) - or Matis Reponse Jeunesse Climatis Climatic Protective Balm, £39.99 (www.matis-uk.com).
If you have noticed that your complexion has a slightly rosier tone after heading home, you have probably developed a few thread veins whilst on the slopes. Thread veins – visible blood vessels that are often caused by exposure to the cold – can be quickly and safely removed using the Ellipse 12PL system. Available at the Knightsbridge Laser Clinic (http://knightsbridgelaserclinic.ellipseipl.co.uk), the sessions take just 10 minutes, with between one and four sessions needed for the best results.
And finally, after all that hard work on the slopes, your body will be crying out for some tender-loving-care – so book yourself in for a Aromatherapy Cocoon-Deep Relaxation Treatment at the spa at The Mayfair Hotel, £99 (www.themayfairhotel.co.uk) when you arrive back on home soil. During the indulgent hour on the treatment bed, you will be wrapped in a warming blend of essential oils – it will instantly balance and replenish moisture levels in your skin.

Treatment Review: REFLEXOLOGY AT MARGARET DABBS FOOT CLINIC AND NAIL SPA (29.01.10)
What it promises: Margaret Dabbs’ whole philosophy centres on a more holistic approach to feet than the usual sanding and splash of paint, so it is unsurprising that the spa has introduced reflexology to its menu. Practiced by esteemed reflexologist Melanie Speed, the treatment works by applying pressure to specific parts of the feet to aid the body’s natural healing process. By gently massaging and stimulating reflexes, energy channels are unblocked, encouraging the body to heal and function more efficiently, as well as to rebalance the mind and soul.
What happens: I sat upright on a white bed with my legs bent and supported by white towels. Melanie began by discussing any health problems or concerns I had – covering everything from sleep to digestion – she then began by giving my feet a soothing massage using Margaret Dabbs’ Emu oil to initially relax them. Melanie explained that the feet are essentially a mirror to the whole body - everything from the eyes to the throat can be pinpointed to a specific spot. She worked systematically around both feet starting at the head, or my toes, noting down any problematic or congested areas. The pressure was quite intensive at times and there were definitely points that were more uncomfortable than others, but it was still a relaxing and pleasant experience.
Results: I was amazed that everything Melanie noted had been previously raised as concerns from other doctors. She ran through the areas that she could feel were congested or problematic, citing my joints, for example, as well as my pancreas. It was remarkably accurate and gave me the incentive to really take stock of my health and diet. That night I slept better than I had done in weeks but the long-term benefits I imagine will be innumerable.
Price: £65, for one hour.
Location: Foot Clinic & Nail Spa, 7 New Cavendish Street, London W1G 8UU. Call 020 7487 5510 or visit www.margaretdabbs.co.uk.

Blog: OUR GROOMING EDITOR – JAMES YORK – REVIEWS BULLDOG NATURAL GROOMING (29.01.10)
Bulldog Natural Grooming can stand with pride as ‘man’s best friend’. It is a brand doing everything very, very well. They are also made in the UK, which deserves praise.
Recognising the need to balance masculine demands with ethical practice, Bulldog have also opted to leave out our chemical enemies from their range. According to Bulldog, you won’t find Parabens, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, artificial colours or any synthetic fragrances in their products. Which is just as well, because most of us haven’t got a clue what they are anyway – and most chaps won’t want to scrub their face with ‘Green 3’ carcinogens.
Every detail of this brand is instantly likeable. Bulldog has the right balance between high quality products, simple package design, and ethical subtlety (they are approved by the Vegetarian society, presumably not as a foodstuff). Blokes need this balance because all too often; its cool first, tree hugging second. No one condones killing birds, but these guys would really only need one stone.
Here’s three moisturisers reviewed, along with a dash of scrub…
Moisturiser Range
4.0 stars
Bulldog has been really thoughtful and clever in producing a moisturising product range that appeals to the younger man ahead of his game, right through to the mature man that has already peaked. Even to those not driven by detail; it is obvious who needs to use each product in the range, with a trendy trio of moisturisers that are tailored to suit your man’s varying degrees of facial tautness. The more leathery or sensitive he is, the more these chaps have toiled to ensure maximum impact with minimum gloop.
Original Moisturiser, £6.99 for 100ml
A lovely smell captures you with this product. With a whopping eight essential oils, it hydrates and reinvigorates the average blokes face. Bizarrely, it seems to successfully utilise the Thames estuary’s bounty. Green algae, brown seaweed and even sea-water, all get a look in, next to dash of green tea. This is a great utility moisturiser; he’ll find it a very pleasant routine to smudge some of this on his cheeks.
Sensitive Moisturiser, £6.99 for 100ml
He isn’t too old but he does suffer from slightly shy skin. It doesn’t like too much attention from essential oils and regularly faces defeat in the weekly skirmishes with shaving rash. Fear not soft-faced men, for Bulldog have you covered here too. It has a simple mature fragrance and never threatens to overwhelm or grease.
A similarly sea-infused list of ingredients are this time mixed with just two essential oils, which is thoughtful and telling. Doubtless there is also magical secret balance to the ingredients, because this product does feel lighter. It isn’t that the original is heavy; this variant is just its brilliantly agile cousin.
Anti Ageing Moisturiser, £10.49 for 100ml
All those pints will eventually tell a tale and the wrinkles may threaten to unfold without warning. Rather than admit defeat like a grumpy elephant seal, he could give this product four weeks of attention. Bulldog’s anti ageing product is the newest of the bunch and really very good.
Essential Oils and the number thereof seem to be the key in this range. You guessed it; this one only has five - it sits nicely in the middle of the range in that respect. Millet seed and tannic acid derived from oak apple help to ‘pad out’ the face from burgeoning wrinkles. To round off this solid non-greasy product there is a dash of balsam and Vitamin E. Arguably the best of the three.
Original Face Scrub, £5.79 for 100ml
4 stars
This is a beast of a scrub. It has the consistency of thick pesto and a pleasant fragrance; he’ll really feel it working away at the dead and dried skin on his face. That said, it isn’t too harsh and unlike other scrubs this could probably merit a daily dose.
It is a cleverly laced mix of nine essential oils, green tea extract, coconut shell, rosehip seed oil and pumice. He’ll be woken or relaxed by this smell depending on whether he scrubs morning or night, because this scrub fits either routine. It’s a tube of good things and good things happen to those that scrub, apparently.

Ed’s Letter (29.01.10)
I’ve never previously treated myself to regular manicures and pedicures – but suddenly, visiting the nail spa has become one of the highlights of my month when I visit my fiancé in Dubai. Why? Because I can afford to. In the UK, the cheapest nail spas will charge you £50 for a manicure/pedicure combo. But over in the desert, the service costs a more reasonable £25. The spa I visit is incredibly stylish – huge leather chairs, TV’s showing catwalk shows on a loop, shelves of candy-bright nail polishes, and luxurious treatment rooms at the back for facials and massages. This place is always packed, with at least 10 other ladies in the spa at the same time as me - so it obviously pays to keep the price low, putting bums on seats from opening until close, every single day. Seeing the spa enjoy such success – they have recently opened up their fourth branch in the city - made me wonder whether salons and spas in this country should take heed, especially in financially challenging times. And just as I was pondering this, an email arrived in my inbox about Wahanda’s – a UK spa website – daily ‘Mob Deals’. This is a genius idea (although I like to think I was moments from the eureka moment myself) where the price of treatments drops dramatically when lots of people purchase on the same day. Finally, I can treat myself on home soil. I feel a new addiction coming on… www.wahanda.co.uk

Origins. I don’t usually comment on moisturisers for a good month after cracking them open, as the results aren’t instantly apparent. But I have made an exception with Origins’ divine new Starting Over™ Age-Erasing Moisturiser with Mimosa (£34) as it’s impressed me from the start. The rich, creamy texture feels surprisingly lightweight and soothing as it’s applied – and leaves the complexion feeling supple and hydrated, yet not at all heavy. I’ve been using it twice daily for a week now – and whilst it’s too early to make dramatic improvements to the surface of the skin – I’ve already noticed an improvement in skin tone and it definitely feels softer and more balanced. www.origins.co.uk

Darphin. I’ve been teaming Origin’s moisturiser with another ‘wow’ product that has taken up permanent residency on my dressing table – Darphin’s VITALPROTECTION Age-Defying Protective Lotion SPF50 (£49). The light formula combines high protection and powerful anti-oxidants to help protect skin from the sun’s rays and other external aggressions. It contains generous infusions of Edelweiss, known for its anti-ageing cosmetic virtues, along with deep-sea organism Venuceane that helps to detoxify and support the skin. I love everything about it – the fact that I know my skin is protected throughout the day, the luxurious texture, and the way it makes my skin glow. www.darphin.co.uk

It’s All About Me. I may be a little beyond its target market (goodbye youth), but it doesn’t stop me appreciating this new skincare range and wishing it was around when I was in my teens. It’s All About Me was created by a clever lady called Elaine Weston, with lots of help from her teen niece and daughter. The girls helped with every aspect – from the fun product names, to the stylish packaging – and even held ‘pamper parties’ to put every product through their paces. With competitive prices (starting at £2.99) and all-natural ingredients, I predict that this range will sell like hot cakes. www.itsallaboutmeskincare.co.uk

Titanic Spa. Whether you’re single or separated from your other half on the big day, Titanic Spa in Yorkshire is the place to head with a couple of girlfriends this Valentines Day. The spa will be transforming its cosy relaxation room into a snug sleepover style cinema, where guests can nestle between fluffy cushions, comfy cushions, and warm blankets to watch romantic movies on the big screen. A different film will be shown each night, with classics like Casablanca, Ghost and Titanic on the show real. It sounds like bliss. An overnight stay at Titanic Spa start at £99 per person. www.titanicspa.com

Ritz Jewellery. On the other hand, if you are blissfully coupled-up and lucky enough to be the recipient of a beautiful sparkler this Valentines Day, make sure he takes you to Ritz Jewellery to choose it. Every customer buying a ring in the boutique will be offered a manicure in the Ritz Beauty Salon – so you can make sure your hands are fit for the bling that is about to adorn them. Whether you choose a chic French manicure, elegant nude, or something colourful to match a cocktail ring – you will leave feeling (and possibly even worth) a million dollars. www.ritzfinejewellery.com

Ed’s Letter (22.01.10)
There was controversy in the beauty industry last week, when a national paper ran a story about Crème de la Mer. It reported that the cost of ingredients in a £530 pot amounts to little more than £25. I don’t doubt their research – although perhaps not to this extent, I think we’ve always suspected that certain premium brands are overpriced. I do, however, think it’s a little short-sighted to suggest that we’re parting with our money for the ingredients alone… It doesn’t take into consideration the years of research that took place to realise that these ingredients did very clever things when placed together… Nor does it take into account that there are huge overheads involved, such as head office fees, advertising and counter rental and staff costs. Just as you’d expect to pay a premium for couture fashion – because it has been designed, cut, and stitched by people with years of experience – so you should pay good money for extensive research in the beauty world. And I think ultimately, the results speak for themselves. I swam a lot whilst at university and my skin didn’t like it – it came up in an itchy red rash, which I couldn’t shift for months. Within weeks of cracking open a pot of Crème de la Mer, however, the rash was gone and my skin was smooth, hydrated, and glowing. I swear by it – and whilst I don’t use it on a day-to-day basis, I would happily pay through the roof if I developed a similar problem again.

Chanel. Remember those temporary tattoos that we used to plaster over our bodies as children? Well, they have suddenly become fashionable – as Chanel has launched the most divine set of Decalomania (temporary tattoos, to you and me), which will be on counters at the end of March (£49 for 55 tattoos). Take your pick from designs that include two birds holding a necklace between their beaks (inspired by Coromandel folding screens in Coco Chanel’s home), chains interlaced with leather wraps for wrists, and a bouquet of wildflowers to wear behind the leg. I adore them – so expect me to be covered from head to foot if you bump into me in the months of spring. Selfridges and Chanel Stores Nationwide.

Beauty-Enhancement. I recently discovered a brilliant beauty website, which has a lot of my favourite premium brands under one roof – and the best bit is that they are all at unbeatable prices. Beauty-Enhancement.com has irresistible buys from the likes of Chanel, Clarins, Elemis, Guinot, Guerlain, St Tropez and Lancome – and I always find something to tempt me whenever I log on. Current highlights include Elemis’ Exotic Lime and Ginger Duo (£36.99), Clarins’ Wonder Volume Mascara (£15.99), Guerlain Kiss Kiss Gloss Collection (£16.99) and St Tropez Gradual Tan Spray (£18.99). The website is stylish and incredibly easy to navigate. I’d highly recommend a visit. www.beauty-enhancement.com

Crème de la Mer. Talking about Crème de la Mer, I was sent their luxurious Lip Balm (£36) this week. It’s another eye-wateringly expensive product – but the fact that it has softened and soothed my dry, wind-cracked lips in a matter of days is nothing to be sniffed at. I have tried everything to sort out my pout and nothing has worked quicker or more effectively than this. I’m scared that I’ll lose it, so it’s staying on my dressing table (possibly defeating the object of owning it - but what the hell, I’d prefer to play it safe). It has a velvety-smooth texture, refreshing scent of mint, and cooling, tingling sensation as I apply it. www.cremedelamer.co.uk

Art Deco. I was sent a selection of cosmetics from Art Deco last week – and the stand-out product was the Perfect Teint Concealer (£13.70). It works in the same way as YSL’s Touch Eclat, yet I’d buy Art Deco’s version every time. It brightens and smoothes the under-eye area, whilst also offering a really decent level of coverage. I am so impressed with the results that I can only describe it as professional quality – every makeup artist needs to get this stylish chrome concealer pen in their kit. Just a few sweeps and it will give the impression that you’ve had ten hour’s sleep. 0207 6320232.

Rapida. I’ve been using the same hairdryer for years – and whilst it was quick and effective, it was also incredibly heavy and gave me arm ache every time I used it. I was recently sent the Diva Professional Styling Rapida 3600 Pro Hairdryer (£49.99) to review and it’s so good that it has since taken up permanent residence in my bedroom. The hot pink casing (I’m not usually swung by colours, but must admit that it’s more interesting than black) is incredibly light and there are four heat and two settings to choose from. It’s quick too, with 2000 Watts of power to dry locks in a matter of minutes. www.divapro.co.uk

TRIED & TESTED: ENERGISING SHOWER GELS (22.01.10)
Boost energy levels on cold, dark winter mornings with our selection of shower gels.

ELEMIS LIME AND GINGER HAND AND BODY WASH, £18 (www.timetospa.co.uk)
What they say: A fresh hand and body wash with a beautiful exotic fragrance of Lime, Citrus, Vetiver, Petitgrain and Ginger essential oils combined with soothing extracts of Thyme, Nettle and Chamomile in a deep cleansing Soya, Wheat and Milk Protein base.
The Results: The packaging is quite plain, but I was very pleasantly surprised when I tested it. The gel has quite a thin consistency, but as soon as I lathered it onto my skin it created a thick, frothy foam. The combination of scents really woke me up – I could clearly pick out the different notes of Ginger, Lime and even Nettle. Shower gels tend to leave my skin feeling dry, but it didn’t happen with this product – it felt balanced and moisturised. It was also a bonus that the fragrance lingered, so I could smell it on my skin while I dressed. I’d definitely recommend this for the perfect morning wakeup call!

Best for: Awakening the senses

JO MALONE LIME BASIL AND MANDARIN SHOWER GEL, £30 (www.jomalone.co.uk)
What they say: Reminiscent of the sparkling scent of limes carried on a Caribbean sea breeze, Lime Basil & Mandarin has become a modern classic for men and women. Fresh limes and zesty mandarins are undercut by peppery basil and aromatic white thyme in this alluring signature blend. The ultimate in luxury shower gels.
The Results: I love Jo Malone - the products never fail to make me feel that little bit happier. This shower gel is particularly brilliant – as soon as I opened the classic-style screw top bottle, the smell of lime and mandarin hit me. As I lathered up the thick gel, the blend of fragrances instantly revived me and made me feel ready to cope with the long day ahead. After rinsing it off my skin was left feeling soft and smooth. This wash is gentle enough for daily use and I think it’ll last for a long time, as I only used a little for my whole shower. I’ll definitely buy this again.
Best for: Soft skin

CRABTREE & EVELYN MANGO & GRAPEFRUIT BOTANICAL CREAMY BODY WASH, £11 (www.crabtree-evelyn.co.uk)
What they say: This ultra-moisturising body wash(es) feature a gentle cleansing formula that leaves even the driest skin feeling incredibly soft. Enriched with hydrating ingredients such as cacao seed butter, cocoa butter, sweet almond oil, glycerine, and mango oil, the botanical mixture(s) rejuvenates and replenishes dry skin, leaving it feeling comfortably moisturised, without a sticky residue.
The Results: I have really dry, fairly sensitive skin, so tend to shy away from scented products. However, the stunning scent of this body wash was too irresistible to resist! I was really excited to use something with Cacao Seed Butter in it because I’ve heard it is intensely moisturising – and it’s true! Not only did this foamy gel moisturise my skin, the different smells really made me feel awake and alert. It’s great value for money and is used by all the family because it doesn’t smell too ‘girly’!
Best for: Deep hydration

CHAMPNEYS CITRUS GLOW ENERGISING SHOWER GEL, £5 (SAINSBURYS NATIONWIDE)
What they say: A refreshing shower gel with the uplifting aroma of eucalyptus and cardamom. The zesty blend of orange peel extract and lemon oil combine to uplift and rejuvenate the mind, while the specially developed conditioning formula leaves skin feeling soft and smooth
The Results: This shower gel is great value for money - perfect for my recession-hit purse strings! I needed to use quite a lot of the gel to create enough foam for my whole body, but once I had lathered it up, I started to really appreciate the zingy, uplifting scent. My skin felt slightly dry after I had used it (nothing unusual there), but still felt refreshed. Once I had moisturised, I was thrilled to realise that I could still smell the gorgeous citrus notes. The fragrance reminded me of holidays - which certainly makes me feel happier and more awake. I’m impressed and I will definitely continue to use it.
Best for: Value for money

CRÈME DE LA MER THE BODY REFINER, £75 (www.cremedelamer.co.uk)
What they say: As The Body Refiner is massaged into skin, La Mer’s piezoelectric (electrically-charged) minerals – tourmaline and sea quartz - convert the massage action into energy, helping to stimulate circulation and awaken and energise skin. The Body Refiner incorporates fermented acidic sea muds harvested from a natural marine source to detoxify and purify skin for a bright healthy appearance. True to Crème de la Mer’s heritage, this multi-faceted treatment includes precious ingredients—including 1.75 carats of pure diamond dust— to deliver a cushiony resurfacing treatment that both polishes and softens the skin. Available from the 28th February.
The Results: Firstly – anything that has diamonds in it gets my vote. Crème de la Mer is known for it’s fantastic, up-market products and this body refiner didn’t disappoint. The gel/scrub is soft and lightweight – and when applied to damp skin, I could actually see the sparkle of the diamonds. I used this in the shower, rubbing it into damp skin and as I massaged it into my skin I could feel the tourmaline and sea quartz stimulating and awakening my skin. As I washed it off, my skin felt soft and moisturised – taking a shower has never been such a luxurious experience. I used this three times a week and am stunned with the results – smooth skin and instant energy and improved circulation. It’s pricey but worth every single penny.
Best for: The luxury buy

THE BODY SHOP TOTAL ENERGY EXHILERATING BODY WASH, £8.50 (www.bodyshop.co.uk)
What they say: An enlivening and reviving pick-me up, this zesty gel-based body wash contains natural exfoliating particles of luffa (loofah?) and murumuru to smooth and invigorate, as well as uplifting Community Trade organic bergamot essential oil, and stimulating guarana, ginger and cinnamon to energise.
The Results: The packaging of this wash looks modern and fits in with my bathroom décor perfectly! A little bit of the gel went a long way, so I only needed a small amount to cover my whole body. It lathers really well and contains tiny grains that help to exfoliate the body (but are soft enough to use on a daily basis). It really stimulated my skin and left it feeling smooth, soft and hydrated. I’m not sure that a shower gel exists that could cheer me up on a dark, cold January morning - but at least this product left my bathroom smelling like heaven for an hour after my shower!
Best for: Refreshing scent

Blog: STELLA GARDNER – SALES DEVELOPMENT & EDUCATION MANAGER AT MARY KAY – DISCUSSES ANTI-AGEING PRODUCTS (22.01.10)
A simple fact we cannot avoid is that time waits for no one. Sooner or later we all notice those lines and wrinkles appearing in the mirror, but thankfully there are now some amazing products available to slow down the process and give our skin a youthful glow. The key to good skin is a consistent skincare routine and this becomes even more relevant as the skin loses elasticity with age. In the 16 years that I’ve worked at Mary Kay, I’ve tried and tested many products, but since discovering the Timewise Miracle Set, I’ve never looked back. The set is a five-step process, which I use daily and includes a 3-in-1 cleanser, the Age-fighting Moisturiser, New Day Solution with SPF25 to protect against damage caused by UV rays and the Night Solution. The 3-in-1 Cleanser is great for time saving as it combines a cleanser, exfoliator and toner all into one. Another firm favourite of mine is the Timewise Firming Eye Cream. Eyes may be the windows to the soul, but at least with this cream, I don’t have to give too much away. This is a rich cream, which firms, brightens and provides intense moisturisation to the delicate skin around the eye. A handbag and makeup bag essential is the Timewise Age-Fighting Lip Primer. The name says it all. The primer creates healthier looking lips by fighting wrinkles and lines. If you are like me and don’t always have the time to constantly top-up your lipstick or gloss, then you will find this product equally useful. I apply the primer on the outside and inside of my lip line, to extend lipstick wear and prevent lipstick from feathering and bleeding.

Feature – 2010 BEAURY MUST HAVES (22.01.10)
From breakthrough treatments to iconic trends, make 2010 the year to widen your beauty horizons...

NEW NAILS
Every beauty junkie knows that the days of a quick file and polish are over. Instead, cuticles must be tended to, base coats must be applied and nail colours must be as current as the clothes they’re paired with - even more so if you want to be taken seriously in the talon world. And now, there’s an abundance of new trends to contend with too. Cue must-have shades, matte manicures and Minx...
Must-have shades: Ice cream colours and pretty pastel polishes in blue, pink, lemon and lilac are the hottest hues this season. Especially the latter, spotted on catwalks including Versace and Sass&Bide.
Recommended by: Andrea Fulerton, Revlon’s spokesperson
Why: “A candy pastel shade, such as lilac or mint, is a great way to keep on trend. It works as a neutral colour and can be worn by all ages but maybe best worn with dark coloured clothes to counter act the paleness of the often white base. If you’re finding them too bright then just apply one coat for a hint of a hue.”
What: 17 Lasting Fix Nail Colour in Parma Violet, £2.99 (Boots), Revlon nail enamel in Lilac Pastelle, £6.29 (Superdrug), Essential Colours Nail Colour in Lilac, £2.50 (Marks & Spencer)
Matte manicure: Same manicure, different finish, thanks to a special solution that’s added to make the nails matte. A chamois cloth is then brushed over the nails to create an even look.
Recommended by: Katarina Kramer, manicurist at Neville Hair and Beauty
Why: “Next season’s big trend is a flat look that debuted backstage at Alexander Wang. This can easily be perfected by putting the nail foundation base coat on top of your chosen colour, although at Neville, the Matte Manicure has really taken off. A more down to earth trend, which is more quirky than glam, for spring/summer 10, the matte manicure is going moon shaped.”
Where: The matte manicure costs £40 and is available at Neville Hair and Beauty (www.nevillehairandbeauty.net)
Minx: Launched in the UK late last year, Minx, a heat activated nail coating is already creating a stir on the beauty scene. Loved by celebs, the transfers (available in designs including liquid gold, silver and cheetah print) last up to a week on fingers, a month on toes.
Recommended by: Thea Green, MD of Nails Inc
Why: “Minx is different to anything else that’s available on the market and allows you to have effects that you can't create in any other way. Exciting and new, it’s already a hot celeb trend with Rihanna and Katy Perry and is ideal for spring/summer as it looks great on toes.”
Where: A Minx manicure costs £30 and is available at Nails Inc (www.nailsinc.com), Daniel Galvin salon (www.danielgalvin.com) and Inner Sanctuary (www.medusahair.co.uk)

HAIR THERAPY
A trip to the salon isn’t just about a cut and colour anymore. From glosses and smoothing treatments to straightening services and long-term blow-drys, advances in haircare are leading to an entirely new salon experience. Transforming themselves into places of pampering, brands like Shu Uemura Art of Hair have even started to incorporate ‘ceremony rooms’ into salons, providing a dedicated space where you can be treated to scalp massages and treatments tailor-made to suit your hair type. Similar concepts have also surfaced from brands such as Wella and their new customised System Professional Hair Alchemy Treatment. Meanwhile elsewhere, its wonder ingredient, Keratin, that’s having the biggest impact on the industry. Found in most straightening, smoothing and conditioning treatments, it transforms hair from unruly to unbelievable in one sitting.
Recommended by: Ben White, co-founder of Eleven Hair and Mark Hayes, International Creative Director for Sassoon Salon
Why: “A key trend for 2010 will be luxe hair treatments as busy women realise that a little time spent in the salon can help them stay looking groomed and glossy for longer. Keratin conditioning treatments infuse the hair shaft with nutrients and ingredients that help to leave it straight, manageable and glossy for months and when married with a great cut, they make fabulous looking hair possible every day.” Ben White
“We firmly believe that hair, just like skin, needs customised care to stay healthy and gorgeous. Whether it's brilliant shine or a sensuous soft touch, there is a range of luxury treatments to deliver bespoke care for your hair.” Mark Hayes
Where: For lustrous looking hair that lasts for months, indulge in the Brazilian Chocolate Keratin Treatment, £200 at Eleven Hair (020 7491 2390) or try Toni&Guy’s Keratin-infused Super-sleek Blow-dry, from £150 (0800 731 2396). If you’re time-poor but still want to inject a shot of health into your locks, look out for the 20-minute System Professional Hair Alchemy Treatment, £15.99 (www.systemprofessional.co.uk) or try Sassoon’s Repair Treatment, £25 (www.sassoon.com) to remove build up and revive hair from root to tip. MAGIC MAKEUP
Taking multi-purpose products to the next level; get ready to witness a rise in anti-aging makeup – produced not only to enhance your god-given features, but to give you a natural face-lift at the same time. In essence, it’s cosmetic surgery without the surgery, and all the big beauty houses are at it. Ploughing money, science and skincare secrets into each and every product, whether you want a face-lifting foundation or a peptide-pumped eye brightener, there’s a revolution on its way that will transform the way we look in five minutes flat.
Recommended by: Lynne Sanders, founder of Cosmetics a La Carte; Paul Herrington, Bobbi Brown UK Head of Artistry and Alan Pan, Estee Lauder International (Make-up) Makeup Artist
Why: “At Cosmetics a La Carte we’ve seen a trend of customers asking for clever makeup that would compliment an anti-ageing skincare regime. We know that smooth, glowing textures combined with clever anti-ageing ingredients can give you younger, flawless looking skin, so our Skin Tint Foundation contains peptides that stimulate collagen production, attract moisture and plump skin for a 'years younger' look.” Lynne Sanders
“The concept is to find a solution for women's beauty problems. The Bobbi Brown Makeup Facelift products are great for women with busy lifestyles as they provide an instant lift straight away and are perfect for creating a quick and easy beautiful polished look.” Paul Herrington
“My 2010 must-have product is the Resilience Lift Extreme Radiant Lifting Makeup. The luminous finish gives skin a fresh, dewy, youthful glow and the formula is infused with Estee Lauder skincare technology to restore moisture, boost collagen production and reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles for a gorgeous, flawless base.” Alan Pan
What: To create a younger-looking flawless base, Estee Lauder’s new Resilience Lift Extreme Radiant Lifting Makeup SPF 15, £28 (counters nationwide) protects skin from environmental aging factors but also contains Hyaluronic acid to keep skin hydrated; or for a more bespoke (but equally as plumping) base, opt for Cosmetic a la Carté’s Skin Tint, £35 (www.cosmeticsalacarte.com). Give eyes a lift with Bobbi Brown’s Tinted Eye Brightener, £22 (www.bobbibrown.co.uk) which instantly refreshes the under-eye area; for face-flattering eyebrows, Clinique’s new Instant Lift for Brows, £12.50 (www.clinique.co.uk) is essential, and if it’s your lips that need a lift, use Soap & Glory’s Sexy Mother Pucker Extreme-Plump XL, £10 (Boots). Full of plant oils and photofillers, it stimulates circulation and smoothes out surface lines.

A FALSE FLUTTER
A beauty ritual that was once resigned to celebrities and drag queens, the past twelve months have seen sales in false eyelashes soar. According to statistics from Selfridges, women are now spending over £10m a year on falsies, and it’s a craze that’s set to continue. With hundreds of styles and sizes to choose from, an extended flutter has even become acceptable during the day, so whether you want subtle single lash applications or heavy winged lashes a la Cheryl Cole, they’re without doubt this year’s necessity purchase.
Recommended by: Adam Sidwell, id Illamasqua International Artist and David Walker-Smith, Beauty Director at Selfridges
Why: “Lashes are like an addiction, once you’ve tried wearing them you feel naked without them. They make you feel feminine and glamorous and they complete anyone’s makeup look – they’re a must.” Adam Sidwell
“In the week before Christmas, Selfridges sold over 2,000 sets of false lashes, proving their popularity as a staple part of every girl’s wardrobe. Services like Shu Uemura’s Tokyo Lash Bar have helped generate this surge by offering customers the opportunity to create their own customised lashes and exclusive designs, and with Valentine’s Day around the corner, the lash phenomenon is sure to continue.” David Walker-Smith
What: Made with real human hair, the most natural lashes you’ll find are Ardell’s strip lashes, £3.56 (www.onestopbeauty.co.uk), for a more dramatic flick, opt for Illamasqua’s lashes in No.13, £11 (www.illamasqua.com), while Shu Uemura’s new limited edition false eyelashes, £20 (Selfridges) are perfect for creating a rebellious rock-chic look.

BIGGER BARNETS
The trend for big, bouncy and voluptuous hair shows no signs of waning, but it is becoming more achievable. That’s because hair extensions just got clever. As well as being used to extend the length of your locks, backstage at the spring/summer shows, they were fitted to create extra height and volume in the hair, while several stylists used them to add a fast and perfectly-formed fringe. A quick and easy way to add movement and texture to your style, with the advent of clip-in extensions, colour-matching technology and quality hair pieces (there’s no straggly strands here), if you’ve shied away from the idea in the past, now is definitely the time to start experimenting.
Recommended by: Richard Ward, celebrity hairdresser and owner of Richard Ward Hair & Metrospa
Why: “For 2010 we are launching Great Lengths hair extensions into our salon, as they provide a new style of dual system application that is quick, versatile and has a wide array of hair colours available so that they blend seamlessly with your own hair. They’re also a completely ethical brand so you know where the hair has been sourced. This season the theme is ‘sexy, messy, luxury hair’ so natural movement and finish is essential. You need to remember that the extensions of old have moved on - forget the wag look and use extensions to create extra oomph to your hair!”
What: Hothair Tru2Life fringe, £14.50 (www.hothair.co.uk) from the Jessica Simpson HairDo range is super simple to use and comes in nine different shades, or if you’re struggling to decide between human hair and synthetic, Love Hair has both. The Human Hair and Thermofibre Clip-In Extensions, from £12 (www.lovehairextensions.com) are available in a range of up to 30 different shades, and both can be blow-dried, straightened and curled as normal. For more details about the Great Lengths extensions services at Richard Ward Hair & Metrospa, call 020 7730 1222.

HIDDEN GEMS
Mineral makeup has already been heralded as a beauty blessing, but its ground-down gemstones that are about to set cosmetics counters alight, thanks to their semi-precious preening properties. Used in cosmetics since ancient times - Egyptians used malachite to fashion green eye liner, while the Chinese still favour makeup containing powdered pearl - crushed ruby is said to improve circulation and prompt a gorgeous healthy glow, amethyst has a soothing effect on the skin, while sapphire is best known for its natural illuminating properties. And because they’re all made of pure minerals, they contain no perfume or parabens, but still boast plenty of beautifying attributes. A concept quickly being snapped up by beauty brands including Rituals and No7, look out for other gemstone launches later this year.
Recommended by: Raymond Cloosterman, Rituals founder and CEO and Lisa Eldridge, No7 (Make-up) Makeup Artist and Creative Director.
Why: “Rituals launched the Gemstone (make-up) makeup range as the ethos is extremely fitting to its philosophy. By using natural gemstones, products with fewer or milder preservatives are developed, and these have a healthy energetic effect on your skin. Natural gemstones also provide an intense colour as well as letting the skin breathe.” Raymond Cloosterman
“Our latest collection is inspired by the beauty of semi-precious gemstones, and each product contains a unique semi-precious stone mineral complex of sapphire, amethyst and ruby, with special light-diffusing properties. I particularly love their transparency and vitreous lustre which gives them such clear colour.” Lisa Eldridge
What: Add a touch of sparkle to your skin with Rituals’ Sundance Bronze, £22.90 (www.rituals.com) packed with pure minerals and amethyst, or make your eyes glimmer with No7’s Natural Radiance Eye Palette, £13.50 (Boots). A palette of baked powder shadows that are totally talc-free, the jewel-inspired shadows can be worn alone to give a delicate shimmer, or blended together for a brighter, bolder look.

Treatment Review: THE HIMALAYAN REJUVENATION TREATMENT, GINA CONWAY AVEDA SALON (22.01.10)
What it promises: This ancient Indian treatment was traditionally used to prepare the body for a full intensive detoxification and comprises of five different elements. As well as being highly relaxing, it aims to eliminate toxins, regenerate and soften the skin, as well as clear the sinuses and congestion.
What happens: As with all Aveda treatments, it begins with a foot bath in a warm basin – Aveda strongly believes in a seamless connection between the heart and feet and it made for a lovely warming start. Before the treatment began, I filled in a questionnaire to determine my stress-levels and general health so that Chiara, my therapist, could select my key oil, which was Infinity, a combination of lavender and vanilla. Next, I lay back on a toweled bed, surrounded by candles and soft soothing music. I took three deep breaths of the Infinity oil before my face was massaged to improve drainage around the sinus area. I then moved to a special massage chair where I sat face forward with a sheet placed over me to enjoy the warm soothing vapours of a steam bath infused with peppermint, tea-tree and eucalyptus oils, which helped to clear my airways and refresh my mind. Moving back to the treatment bed, next came a vigorous dry body exfoliation using hand mitts to remove any dead skin, detoxify and stimulate the blood flow and warm up the joints. This was followed by an all-over moisturising massage using Aveda Jojoba oil to hydrate the skin. The oil was then left to absorb, while my body was encased in a steam bath, which looks like a white tent and fills with vapour. This stopped at my neck, and cold-compresses were placed on my forehead to stop me overheating. After 15 minutes, I was given fresh towels to dry myself and the treatment was completed with the Shiodara cleanse. This is basically the rhythmic dripping of warm oil onto my third eye, or the middle of my forehead, which flowed down through my scalp and was an incredibly soothing finish.
The Results: I tested the treatment on a cold rainy November night, my hair was soaked and I could feel the beginnings of a cold. By the time I emerged from two hours of delicious steam baths and rich oils I felt warm through to my bones and my cold has yet to materialise. It was not only incredibly luxurious and pampering, but I loved that it was so full of surprises, which is saying something from a die-hard beauty fan. It was a truly delicious winter treat and one that I would highly recommend that everybody savour.
Price: From £160, for two hours

Breaking News: GUERLAIN EXPANDS IDYLLE FRAGRANCE WITH BATH LINE (22.01.10)
Following on from Idylle, the pretty floral perfume that Guerlain launched late last year, comes the complementary bath line. A trio of petal-based pleasures, the new range features a luxurious Shower Gel, Body Lotion and Body Cream, all of which are subtly fragranced with the signature Idylle scent. A fusion of Bulgarian roses, raspberry and lychee, combined with patchouli and white musk, lily-of-the-valley and jasmine, the fragrance layers are perfect for bathing in – not too sweet, not too strong. You’ll find that skin is left softly scented without being overpowered. And the indulgence doesn’t end there, because in addition to the fragrance, both the body lotion and body cream also contain a handful of gold micro-pearls to leave skin looking illuminated and radiant. Even the packaging screams opulence, mirroring the drop of gold design of the original Idylle bottle. A work of art in itself, just make sure you give yourself an extra five minutes at shower time because when you’re not ogling the bottles, you’ll be admiring your skin.
The Idylle bath range starts at £28.50 and is available nationwide from 27th February.

Blog: DENTIST DR NICK MOHINDRA DISCUSSES THE LATEST ADVANCE IN ANTI-AGEING – ORALIFT FACIAL REJUVENATION (15.01.10)

I’ve been developing Oralift Facial Rejuvenation for the past nine years, but I have been interested in the field of facial aesthetics for the past 20 years, and Oralift has evolved as a continuation of my Dentalfacelift work. Even now I am bemused by the fact that as a dentist I now spend most of my time looking at faces rather than teeth.
My work days involve consulting on, fitting and monitoring patients’ often quite dramatic progress - I can’t fit and tell, but we have famous faces that use the appliance and international customers flying in as it’s currently only available at a handful of clinics, whose practitioners come over to courses I hold to train with the device. We’ve also had highly regarded beauty journalists using it. Our clinic is on the rather exclusive Wimpole Street in central London, parallel to the famed Harley Street.
So, what is it? Oralift is an appliance that is fitted on the lower teeth and only has to be worn for short periods. I recommend a couple of hours every third day, and that it is worn for a period of two months twice a year. How does Oralift work? When a patient wears the appliance, a larger space in between the upper and lower teeth is created, and the muscles have to alter to let the jaw rest in a new position. As the muscles adapt to this new position, they appear to become more toned and trigger the body’s natural healing process, counteracting the effects of facial ageing. Oralift should be completely painless and the only side effect would be muscles aching if they are overused. It is therefore important to follow the prescribed regime. I find that many patients who are committed to the principle of exercise relate to the principle behind Oralift.
Patients report that Oralift is comfortable to wear and easy to fit into their lifestyle. Some people wear it in the bath. Others while they are driving or at their computers.
What can Oralift do? Overall, patients tend to look fresher and less tired and lose the sad look that ageing tends to give us. Their friends and family often comment on how well they are looking, but are not sure why or how! Specifically, patients report improvements in their eyes, skin, jawline, but I would say that the main benefit of Oralift is that it appears to reverse the” ageing triangle”…in youth the base of the triangle is in the area of the cheeks and the point is towards the chin. As jowls develop, the base of the triangle drops to the jaw line and the point is towards the nose.
Oralift seems to meet the need of those people looking for facial rejuvenation, but in a natural way. It’s not really a competitor of any of the established cosmetic treatments, but is in a category of its own… ‘self rejuvenation’ if you will.

Tried & Tested: MUSCLE SOOTHERS (15.01.10)
Take the pain out of your workout with our pick of the best muscle soothers.

LUSH WICCY MAGIC MUSCLES MASSAGE BAR £5.26 for 70g (www.lush.co.uk)
What they say: Magic aches and pains away by massaging this bar all over, allowing the cocoa butter to soften, condition and moisturise. The aduki beans provide added pressure, acting like a multitude of tiny fingertips all pressing at once. Peppermint oil soothes aches and revives a tired mind, while cinnamon leaf helps increase circulation wherever it’s rubbed on.
The Results: When I was asked to review a Muscle Soother, I immediately expected to be trialling a bath soak - not particularly convenient for me as I tend to shower after a workout-so I was pleasantly surprised when I received a massage bar. As with all Lush products, the bar is minimally packaged, with a reusable tin included if you buy two. The bar has a base of cocoa butter, which makes it easy to use, and glides over skin for a thorough and truly effective massage. The cocoa butter melts on contact to leave skin feeling moisturised and nourished. What’s more, unlike pharmaceutical muscle soothers, the scent is a fantastic, spicy blend of peppermint and cinnamon that smells good enough to eat!
Best for: Value for money

ELEMIS ACHING MUSCLE SUPER SOAK £32 for 400ml (www.timetospa.co.uk)
What they say: A powerful bath soak with a sea salt base to detoxify and cleanse, juniper to reduce swelling and rosemary to boost circulation, along with birch, clove, Alpine lavender, wild thyme and blue chamomile to recharge and energise. Elemis Aching Muscle Super Soak is a deep-heat, aromatherapeutic remedy for overworked, aching muscles, particularly after exercise.
The Results: When I heard that Girls Aloud swear by Elemis Aching Muscle Super Soak to soothe their muscles after their energetic performances, I couldn’t wait to try it for myself. I’ve been a fan of Elemis for some time and particularly like their indulgent bath and body ranges so I had high expectations. This didn’t disappoint. On opening the box, there was a strong aromatherapy fragrance, best described as medicinal, due to the blend of essential oils – this gives a luxurious first impression. The soak creates bubbles when added to the water and although soothing, I felt balanced after my bath rather than sleepy. Although pricey, the bottle is a generous size and as I’d be inclined to use this as a treat, rather than every day, it would last for a while.
Best for: Luxury

HEAVEN PRE SPORTS OIL £24.95 for 150ml (www.heavenskincare.com)
What they say: Founded by celebrity therapist, Deborah Mitchell, Heaven’s all-natural range of body products work to restore health and beauty. This oil contains clarysage, which will warm and detoxify the muscles, helping to prevent injuries. The essential oils of orange and mandarin within the oil will make cells and skin more flexible.
The Results: As part of my New Year’s health kick, I’ve resolved to switch to natural products where possible - so this oil, which combines natural extracts with a functional, sporty element could not have arrived at a better time. The oil has a strong, citronella scent which instantly transported me back to summer holidays and reminds that bikini season will arrive before we know it! I was a little unsure about using an oil-based product ahead of exercise, but now that I’ve tried it I’m converted! The oil has a lightweight texture that encourages a massage application, helping to prepare the muscles ahead of a workout. There is a slight sensation of warmth when applied, which I liked as you can literally feel it working! My muscles ached less than normal, despite completing my usual exercise regime, so I can definitely say that my gym bag has found a permanent addition!
Best for: Prevention

LIFE NK MUSCLE RELIEF BATH SOAK £18 for 500ml (www.spacenk.co.uk)
What they say: Reward yourself after a tough workout with this therapeutic soak. Dead Sea salts detoxify whilst a multi-mineral complex and blend of aromatherapy oils help your body and mind recover.
The Results: When the bottle arrived for me to trial, I was pleasantly surprised at the generous size as I consider Space NK to be a premium brand and the two don’t always go hand in hand. It is a sleek, clinically white bottle with a quirky bear pictured - the logo for the Life NK range. I was a little unsure of how much of the thick, soapy liquid to pour into the bath at first so simply used my own judgement and crossed my fingers that I wasn’t wasting any unnecessarily. The scent is a menthol, herbal blend but it isn’t overwhelming - in fact, I felt that the aromatherapeutic effects soothed my mind as well as my body and found myself looking forward to using the soak as a treat after my workout! In particular, I enjoyed using it as motivation after braving the cold for an outdoor run - this product is best used accompanied by candles and a “do not disturb” sign!
Best for: Overall effects

AROMATHERAPY ASSOCIATES DE-STRESS MUSCLE GEL £18.75 for 150ml (www.aromatherapyassociates.com)
What they say: This non-oily gel contains essential oils and aromatic waters to help release tension in aching muscles and joints after exercise or a hard day. It has a localised soothing and warming effect and can be applied on the spot for relief within ten minutes.
The Results: I’m not one for exercise, but I do hold a lot of tension in my neck, shoulders and back when stressed so I’m ashamed to admit that I was interested to try this product from the “lazy-girl” point of view! The tube packaging looks luxurious and is well suited to the gel formula. It is easy to apply, without the mess that can be associated with some massage products. I particularly liked the fact that you can control the point of application, making it ideal for on-the-spot relief. I was impressed with how quickly the product set to work and will be keeping a tube in my desk drawer for tension relief when in the office.
Best for: Instant results

MOLTON BROWN BRACING SILVER BIRCH THERMAL SALTS MUSCLE SOAK £18 (www.beautyexpert.co.uk)
What they say: Unwind and unravel the strains of the day with this dedicated muscle therapy created to restore a tense, weary body. Enriched with dynamic thermal salts and active extracts of linden and birch, it helps to flush toxins, soothe the muscles and boost skin condition, while a fresh woody aroma lifts the spirits.
The Results: I’ve heard great things about Brit brand, Molton Brown but never treated myself to any of their products before. Having having tested the product, I will definitely be exploring what else the brand has to offer! The tin packaging looks sleek in my bathroom, with an almost old-fashioned feel to it and it is also functional. To dispense the product, you simply measure two capfuls and add to water as you are running the bath. It turns the water a brilliant green, which appealed to my childish side - and although it doesn’t add any bubbles of note, I enjoyed taking some me-time to relax nonetheless. The only downside to this product? The fresh, woody fragrance appeals to men and women alike so I’ll have to hide it from my partner!
Best for: Unisex

Feature: MAKING SENSE OF IT (15.01.10)
Indulge your senses with our pick of ‘feel good’ beauty products and treatments. Whether they smell, look, taste, feel, or sound good - they will certainly lift spirits this January.

TOUCH
Never underestimate the power of an indulgent texture or soothing touch – the right beauty product can soothe, pamper, and comfort skin in one fell swoop.
The Products: On cold January evenings, a self-heating face-mask will be a welcome addition to the bedtime routine. Slather a Kaolin clay based mask over damp skin – it will heat on contact, opening up pores for a deep cleanse. We love Sanctuary Warming Charcoal Detox Mask, £8.76 (Boots Nationwide), which releases the luxurious scent of essential oils as it heats and helps to clear blemishes.
A long, pampering massage is the ultimate way to relax – but there’s no need to shell out on expensive spa treatments. Massage has been used as a beauty regime for centuries – in fact, biblical references from 493 BC recount the art of daily massage with olive oil and myrrh – and it’s easy and affordable to treat yourself at home. Invest in a good massage tool, such as The Body Shop’s Total Body Massager, £10 (www.thebodyshop.co.uk), and team it with high-quality oil –Tisserand’s De-Stress Body Massage Oil, £7.50 (www.tisserand.com) would be ideal.
If you do invest in one spa treatment this January, make it reflexology – the practice of massaging or applying pressure to parts of the feet to balance the body and mind. For a truly holistic experience, head to the Margaret Dabbs Foot Clinic and Nail Spa, £65 (www.margaretdabbs.co.uk) - after an hour’s treatment, you’ll feel re-energised and uplifted.

SIGHT
Colour your way to boosted spirits, by swapping those dull, dark makeup colours for cheerful, vivid hues.
The Products: If you spend most of your day tapping away on a computer keyboard, your nails will be in constant view – so get hold of a nail lacquer in a bright, colourful shade to bring a little sunshine to long days in the office. We love POP’s Nail Glam, £4 each (www.asos.com) – a collection of vivid, candy-sour shades, including new launches Blaze (a neon orange) and Radio Active (a juicy lime green).
Don’t pack away those glitter eyeliners and eyeshadows now the festive season has passed – they will bring a welcome flash of colour and light to dreary winter days. Barry M’s new range of Glitter Lashes, £4.95 each (www.barrym.com) can be worn on their own or over your regular mascara to add a colourful sparkle to your flutter. For a more grown-up, sophisticated look, turn to Chanel’s fabulous limited edition La Ligne de Chanel Professional Eyeliner Duo, £26 (Counters Nationwide). Choose from two black liners – one with a subtle shimmer, and the other packed with sparkle for a dazzling evening look.
Finally, don’t be afraid to paint lips in the brightest shade you can lay your hands on – it’s still a huge catwalk trend for Spring/Summer 2010. For the impressive choice of cheerful colours, your first port of call should be MAC Cosmetics – we love their creamy, long-lasting Lipsticks in bright hues, such as Utter Fun (a neon pink), Lady Danger (a vibrant red) and Morange (a juicy orange). £12.50 each (www.maccosmetics.co.uk)

SOUND
Sound isn’t something often associated with beauty – but hardened junkies would argue that the familiar fizzes and crackles of their favourite products play an important part in the overall experience. And as beauty gets ever more innovative, music is starting to play a part too…
Products: There are few things more uplifting that the fizz of a bath ballistic as it is thrown under a running tap and starts to release its scent. We like to think of it as the beauty equivalent of an Alca Seltzer – which was clearly the thought when the clever people at LUSH created their Happy Pill, £2.95 (www.lush.co.uk). The smile-inducing bath ballistic releases notes of grapefruit, bergamot, frankincense, lemon, orange flower and mandarin as it fizzes audibly in the water.
LUSH is also the first brand to team a spa treatment with specially choreographed music, by commissioning Simon Emmerson of The Imagined Village to compose music to play alongside their newly-launched Synaesthesia Massage, £125 for 1.5 hours (0207 3768348). After time spent on the treatment bed, you will feel regenerated, refreshed, and hugely uplifted.
Vie at Home’s Sun Goddess Body Crackle, £10.50 (http://shop.vieathome.com) is well worth adding to your dressing table. Firstly, the blend of special ingredients (which crackle and fizz as they are applied to skin) cool and refresh the body on application – and, better still, the bronze shimmer adds a flattering golden glow to dull, pale winter skin. It’s the perfect thing for boosting radiance on January nights out.

SMELL
Boost flagging energy levels with punchy, citrus-scented products. Much like a shot of caffeine, these products have the power to refresh and revive within seconds.
The Products: Get your hands on Space NK’s new LifeNK Uplifting Collection, which contains lively notes of grapefruit, spearmint, and peppermint to instantly wake up senses. Start by smoothing the Jump Start Shower Gel (£12.50) over skin in the shower, then smother skin in the Uplifting Body Lotion, £14.69 (www.spacenk.co.uk)
Candles are a great way to quickly create an uplifting, energising ambience in your home. Look no further than NEOM Luxury Organics’ range of holistic, vegetable-wax candles – the Pure Indulgence: Uplifting Candle, £35 (www.neomorganics.com) fills the room with jesty notes of Brazilian Orange Blossom and burns for up to 55 hours.
When it comes to perfume, pick a scent that contains cheerful citrus notes. Jo Malone’s Orange Blossom Cologne, from £32 (www.jomalone.co.uk) is ideal – with top notes evocative of Clementine leaves in the morning dew, an orange blossom and water lily heart, and green, floral base notes. The fragrance is long-lasting and instantly uplifting.

TASTE
Tasting your way to happiness doesn’t need to mean popping bitter-tasting herbal bills, nor swigging detox syrups.
The Products: Give your energy levels a boost with V Water Kick, £1.50 for 500ml (0800 0321 767) – an invigorating, refreshing blend of Ginger and Mango. It tastes delicious – and better still, it contains Vitamin B3, B5, B6 and B12, so it’s good for you too!
There are few prettier drinks than Choi Time’s Damask Rose Tea Buds, from £6.50 (www.choitime.co.uk) - but the delicious, flowering drink has brilliant health and mood benefits too. The drink tastes a little like jasmine tea and works to quickly relieve stress and anxiety. Furthermore, it helps to boost circulation, give skin a healthy glow, and nourish organs inside and out. The buds are caffeine free and rich in Vitamins A, B, C, E and K. Simply drop 2-5 buds into your cup or teapot and leave to brew for 2-5 minutes – you can re-use the buds up to 5 times.
DELO Booster Caps, from £2.49 (http://shop.foodforthoughtuk.com) – which you screw onto the neck of a small bottle of water to release 100% natural herbal extracts into the liquid below - are also well worth a taster. Choose from caps that include Energy and De-Stress – the perfect antidote to dark, depressing January days.

INTUITION
Trust your instincts... Your body knows what it is craving – whether that is an injection of energy, a chance to relax, or the chance to feel pampered and spoilt.
The Products: Duck and dive into an aromatherapy kit whenever you feel the need for a pick-me-up. The beauty of these kits is that they cover all bases, containing oils to soothe, energise, relax, and uplift.
Aromatherapy Associates’ Minature Bath & Shower Collection, £26 (www.aromatherapyassociciates.com) contains nine indulgent bath and shower oils for every possible mood. Take time to sniff each bottle – then simply pick the fragrance that best appeals to instantly boost flagging spirits. Pick from oils that include Relax to promote a good night’s sleep, De-Stress to help clear your mind, Revive to energise a weary mind and body, and Support to take care of you in times of need.
Treat yourself to Molton Brown’s luxurious Air Constellation Gift Set, £44.25 (www.moltonbrown.co.uk), which contains seven candles in different scents to suit your ever-changing moods. With an impressive 10-12 hours burn time per candle, there’s a lot of value in the beautifully-scented kit. Pick from scents that include Relaxing Yuan Zhi, Inspiring Wild Indigo, and Recharging Black Pepper.
Finally, for stress-relief on the go, Tisserand’s Survival Kit, £10 (www.tisserand.com) is well worth the investment. The kit contains three roller-ball bottles, containing natural remedies to De-Stress, Energise, or aid Sleep. Applied to pulse points whenever you feel the need, the oils work to rebalance your mood. A little goes a very long way, so this kit will sail you through 2010.

Editor’s Letter (15.01.10)
Much like a music lover remembering the first album they bought or a wine buff recalling their first glug of a fine wine, a true beauty junky will never forget their first dalliance into the world of fragrance, makeup, or body products. I’m no exception… I can still remember vividly the first perfume I treated myself to – it was Cacharel’s Lou Lou Blue, purchased onboard a P&O ferry on the way home from a school French exchange to the Loire Valley. I still have that bottle with its 15-year old remnants – and one sniff transports me back to those wide-eyed teenage years. As a teenager, I would travel up to London on the train with friends for shopping trips – and whilst friends would arrive home with bags full of purchases from Miss Selfridge and Morgan, I would arrive home armed with pots of lip-balm, sparkly eyeshadow, and face masks. My hair – a natural shade of mouse – was highlighted at local model nights (the only way I could afford it) and between trips, I would dye it vibrant shades of orange, plum, or scarlet with bottles of Wella Hair Mousse. But the moment that I really became aware of my beauty addiction was when I spotted a couple of trucks on the motorway, with the words BALFOUR BEATTY (a building company) emblazoned across the side. I misread the word BEATTY for BEAUTY – and for years I believed that the company shipped beauty products around the country. I’ve never felt envy for a trucker in quite the same way…

LUSH. I think this fabulous Head to Toe Kit (£12.50) from LUSH is just the ticket for dark January evenings. It goes on sale on the 18th – this coming Monday – for just two weeks, so make a date in your diary. It contains nine fresh, handmade products to revive and boost tired skin – from head to toes! The kit includes samples of Big Shampoo, Vitamin C Toner Tab, Moisturiser of your choice, Handy Gurugu Hand Cream, Lemony Flutter Cuticle Butter, Mini Sugar Scrub, Each Peach and Two’s a Pair Massage Bars, and Pied de Pepper Foot Lotion – along with a full-sized Fresh Face Mask of your choice. It’ll be a brilliant bargain. www.lush.co.uk

LashAlive. I started using Adonia LashAlive (£49) back in November and can finally report back the results. I have naturally long lashes, but my left eye is patchy, with shorter lashes in places – something I’m convinced was caused by too many lash extensions in 2009. LashAlive has completely sorted out the problem, extending my lashes to extremes I never thought were possible, and filling in the patchy gaps. It was very easy to use – you sweep it across the roots of the lashes like an eyeliner morning and evening. I strongly recommend it. www.lashalive.co.uk

Diptyque. I adore the luxurious French candle brand Diptyque – so when I heard that they had launched a Special Edition RED candle (£38) to help people affected by AIDS in Africa, I knew it was going to be a bestseller. The candle’s soothing, spicy scents are derived from certified fair trade vanilla – whilst the scarlet packaging, with graphic African print, makes it jump out from the shelf. Of course, the biggest pull is that the purchase helps to provide vital medicine for those living with HIV. I wish Christmas hadn’t passed already – I would have bought them by the bucket load. 0207 244 4948

UK Beauty Awards. The UK Beauty Awards – taking place on Friday 25th June during Clothes Show Live at Earls Court – have just announced the panel of judges that will be shortlisting products. I might be biased (as my name is on the list) but it’s an impressive panel, including National Beauty Editors, Bloggers, Celebrities, and Industry Experts – so you can be confident that the shortlist of products will be pretty high quality. After that, voting will be handed over to the general public – at www.handbag.com and www.diarydirectory.com. If you fancy heading to London to watch the awards, visit www.clothesshowlondon.com

e.l.f. I don’t know about you, but my skin has been looking far from pretty since the excesses of Christmas – and my concealer palette has been working over-time to repair the damage. When it’s finished, I will be replacing it with e.l.f.’s Studio Corrective Concealer (£3.50), which contains four cover-up colours in one compact palette. Each shade tackles a different problem – under-eye circles, a sallow complexion, extreme redness, or blemishes. The price is absolutely brilliant for such a clever, useful kit – and it will come in very handy over the coming year. www.eyeslipsface.co.uk

Spa Review: CLOISTERS SPA AT MUCKROSS PARK HOTEL (15.01.10)

Location: Muckross Park Hotel and Cloisters Spa, Lakes of Killarney, Killarney, Co. Kerry, Ireland. 00 353 64 6623400. www.preferredboutique.com/muckross
Facilities: A 30-minute journey from Kerry airport, Muckross Park Hotel is set amid the stunning scenery of Killarney National Park and is just a short stroll – or bike ride - from the peace and tranquility of the world famous Lakes of Killarney. The quiet, dimly lit Cloisters spa is a tranquil, atmospheric space ideal for anyone longing to recharge without feeling the pressure of being seen in a swimsuit out of season. The spa itself has been beautifully conceived, with its dramatic Celtic ironwork, Grecian statues, and classically-styled vitality pool. There is plenty to occupy your time, with the outdoor hot tub perfect for crisp winter days, as well as herbal sauna, salt grotto, Jacuzzi, and a Rasul. Not to mention an ice fountain and themed shower where you can blow the cobwebs away with “Atlantic Rain”, or warm up under a “Caribbean” down pour. If that isn’t enough to wind down, then you can simply chill out in the Relaxation Room on a four poster bed, magazine in hand. There’s also a small restaurant attached to the spa serving delicious, healthy salads and meals.
Ambience: You can really bliss-out in this perfectly tranquil hideaway. There were only a handful of other couples in the spa when we visited, but it felt as if we had it to ourselves. It is not pretentious or showy, just relaxed and down-to-earth and ideal if you are craving some ‘me’ time. The staff are helpful and friendly to boot.
Treatments Tested: The Aromatherapy Associates De-Stress Muscle Release massage (One hour, €100)
It is always a measure of a good massage when the therapist can instinctively tell how much pressure to apply. This deep tissue treatment, using Aromatherapy Associates oils, was just intensive enough to wind down with ease. The therapist immediately got to work on my stiff limbs and tired back after weeks hunched over a computer. Like the spa itself, it was fuss-free but effective and just what I needed to start the weekend renewed and revitalised.
Dr Perricone Instant Facelift (One hour, €160)
After my massage I wanted to try a results-driven, rather than pampering facial. My therapist warned me it would be a no-frills treatment and there were certainly no hot stones or soothing massages. The ‘facelift’ is specially designed for ageing, pigmented, scarred complexions, as well as skin that suffers from imbalances, whether oiliness or dryness. It began with a thorough cleanse before Dr Perricone’s special Neuropeptide serum was applied. This contains its patented secret formula, DMAE, which activates skin renewal, improving elasticity, combating fine lines and ultimately giving the face-lift effect. I was told it can tingle but I felt no discomfort and while this got to work, I was left alone to snooze. Next the mask was removed and a soothing moisturiser applied. At first my face was a little red but the following day the redness had subsided and my skin shone. The pores around my nose appeared to be more refined and the tone more even, even the dry patches had gone – fantastic even without the frills.
Prices: Double rooms start from €200, spa packages from €99 per person, and treatments start from €40.

Breaking News: CHANEL LAUNCHES THE NEXT MUST-HAVE NAIL SHADE (15.01.10)

If the mint madness of Chanel’s cult Jade nail shade passed you by, fear not - because the brand has another limited edition lacquer up their sleeves for Spring/Summer ‘10. This time paying homage to the beauty of beige, it’s time to form an orderly queue for Particulière.
Cast your mind back to the start of 2009 and it seems unimaginable to think that people would be scrambling to get their hands on a bottle of mint green nail polish. Fast forward to September and that’s exactly what happened when Chanel launched their limited edition Jade nail colour. Selling out in an unprecedented forty minutes, everyone from Lily Allen to Elle McPherson was heard singing the praises of the pastel phenomenon.
But with every new season comes a new nail colour, and this time the focus is on nudes and neutrals with the limited edition that’s predicted to set pulses racing - a muted mushroom brown-cum-grey shade labelled Particulière. Bucking traditional trends - brights in springs, browns in winter – it’s set to be another record sell-out, something that can only be described as the allure of Chanel.
Le Vernis in Particulière, £16 forms part of Chanel’s spring collection, Les Impressions De Chanel, on counters from 29th January.

Tried & Tested: INTENSIVE HAND CREAM (08.01.10)
Make your New Year’s Resolution to keep your hands soft, smooth, and moisturised in 2010. We’ve tested six Intensive Hand Creams.

TISSERAND INTENSIVE HAND & NAIL CREAM, £6.30 (www.tisserand.com)
What they say: Free from parabens and synthetic fragrances, our products contain only pure essential oils, not synthetic fragrances.
The Results: I absolutely loved this thick, rich hand cream. The scent reminded me of a luxury spa and I became quite addicted to rubbing it into my mitts! It absorbed into skin within seconds and left my hands feeling soft, supple, and silky. The tube is a decent size – and I only needed a 5p-sized amount each time, so it would last for quite a while. I was surprised when I saw the price – it smells and feels like a luxury brand, so I was expecting the price tag to be much higher. I’d highly recommend it.
Best for: Luxury scent

SOAP & GLORY ENDLESS GLOVE DRY HAND CREAM, £4.50 (BOOTS NATIONWIDE).
What they say: Soap & Glory Endless Glove Dry Hand Cream is a 2-in-1 moisture cream mask formula, with pathenol Vitamin E, Allantoin, Kiwifruit and Daisy Flower Extract
The Results: I like to keep a tube of hand cream on my desk at work, as opening so many envelopes and packages leaves them feeling dry and chapped. I liked this cream – it has quite a thin, lightweight consistency, but sinks in quickly and doesn’t leave hands feeling greasy. The uplifting citrus scent was a big bonus and I was impressed with the size of the tube. This isn’t the richest formula, but it has left my hands feeling softer and smoother. For the price, I would highly recommend it.
Best for: Budget buy

COSMETICS A LA CARTE GLOVELY HAND CREAM, £15 (www.cosmeticsalacarte.com)
What they say: Glovely hand cream promises to banish dry and damaged winter skin, acting as a glove of protection that deeply moisturises dry, chapped hands leaving them looking smooth and feeling incredibly soft.
The Results: I have very dry skin on the palms of my hands, fingers, and cuticles, so need something quite intensive to keep them feeling supple and hydrated. I loved this product – the pump applicator made it very quick and easy to apply and it left my hands feeling silky soft. The cream is fairly lightweight and it is enriched with cocoa butter, so it smelt delicious. It sunk in within a few seconds and my skin felt soft as velvet. I would highly recommend this hand cream – it’s convinced me to check out the brand’s other body products!
Best for: Very dry skin

DERMALOGICA MULTIVITAMIN HAND AND NAIL TREATMENT, £18 (www.lookfantastic.com)
What they say: Effectively condition, protect and repair your chapped hands while strengthening your nails against splitting and peeling. Dermalogica Multivitamin Hand & Nail Treatment heals your dry, rough hands.
The Results: The packaging is quite plain, so I was very pleasantly surprised when I discovered that the cream inside was thick, indulgent, and deliciously scented! I liked the fact that it contains ingredients to fight the signs of ageing and SPF15 – I have a few sunspots on the back of my hands, so would like to prevent further damage. It smelt fruity, sank into skin quickly, and left the skin feeling soft and supple. The only downside is the price – but a little goes a long way, so I think the tube would last for a while.
Best for: Anti-ageing

LIZ EARLE HAND REPAIR, £19 (http://uk.lizearle.com)
What they say: Massage this potent, non-greasy cream into hands and nails regularly throughout the day to offer instant protection and relief for dry, chapped hands. Contains antioxidant beta-carotene plus protective natural source vitamin E.
The Results: I absolutely loved this product. The texture is very thick and luxurious – and it melts almost instantly into hands, leaving them feeling silky and soft. The best thing for me is the fragrance – the cream is packed with essential oils and I found it really relaxing. This is the perfect hand cream for leaving on my desk at work, as it’ll last for months and has a handy pump applicator, which makes it quick and easy to use. For those that prefer keeping their hand cream in their handbag, there are lots of different sizes and price-points to pick from. I’d really recommend it.
Best for: Keeping at work

NAILS INC KENSINGTON CONDITIONING HAND CREAM, £15 (www.nailsinc.com)
What they say: This brand new treatment is enriched with caviar extract and will condition and nourish your hands. Choose this firming lotion to help reduce the appearance of fine lines.
The Results: The packaging is instantly appealing – the black and silver tube is stylish and would look great on any dressing table. I’m lucky that I don’t suffer from dry, chapped skin on my hands – but I do like to apply hand cream after washing them, as otherwise they feel tight and uncomfortable. This is the perfect product for the job - it felt cooling and soothing as I applied it and left my hands feeling supple and soft. Those with very dry skin might like to pick something a bit richer, as the texture is quite thin, but I’ve become a big fan. As an added bonus, it helps to fight the signs of ageing.
Best for: Keeping in your handbag

Blog: CARLA MILLER – LIFE COACH AND FOUNDER OF WWW.SPACETOBE.CO.UK - TALKS ABOUT THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE COMPANY AND ITS RELAXATION PRODUCTS (08.01.10)
Space To Be was created to help busy women have a little bit of relaxation and ‘me time’ in their everyday lives. Spending 25 minutes listening to a hypnotherapy track can help you unwind after a long day, get in the right mood for a date, or increase your body confidence. Devoting some time purely to your wellbeing can lift your mood and help you feel more positive and confident about life.
I used to work very long hours as a charity director, trying to raise millions of pounds every year. I loved my job but I put all my energy into it and after 12 years in the sector I found myself burnt out with no energy left to continue. I took some time off, learnt to truly relax and realised how much better I felt when I incorporated some relaxation into my everyday life. I even lost the deep frown wrinkle on my forehead and resolved never to get it back again.
So I got together with leading hypnotherapist Georgia Foster to create a range of hypnotherapy CDs and downloads that could help women feel great - and were packaged to look beautiful, so that it feels like a treat to use them.
The website www.spacetobe.co.uk currently offers three tracks – each available as a CD (£13.99) or an MP3 download (£9.99). Ultimate Unwind offers 25 minutes of pure relaxation that will immediately reduce your worries and will train your brain to recognise when you risk exhaustion and help you to take a break. Hey Gorgeous will help you feel total body confidence and give you an inner sparkle that radiates to the world. Single & Fabulous helps you to feel good about being single, feel more confident when dating and intuitively attract the right people into your life. I’ve been delighted with the feedback from testers and customers, who have found themselves with new partners, new confidence and a more relaxed and content approach to life.
When I was developing the brand I took inspiration from Philosophy products which always work brilliantly but also put a smile on your face when you use them. I love their approach and reading quotes about love and hope whilst moisturising is a great way to start my day. I’m also a big fan of Bobbi Brown and her products as they’re aimed at helping real women feel beautiful as they are.
My vision for www.spacetobe.co.uk is that it becomes a place that women turn to when they need an instant confidence booster or some relaxation and that they love it so much that they tell their friends. If we all felt just a little bit more relaxed about life and realised how fabulous we are, exactly as we are now, the world would be a much happier place.
If you’d like a little bit of ‘me time’ in your everyday life why not visit www.spacetobe.co.uk and download our FREE 10 minute relaxation track.

Ed’s Letter (08.01.10)
Feeling miserable? You aren’t alone, as we are rapidly approaching ‘Blue Monday’ – the day when we are most likely to feel down-in-the-dumps. I’m not taking any chances, so have armed myself with all my favourite beauty products – it will be impossible to get through the day feeling unhappy when there is the promise of a long wallow in the bath with luxurious oils, scrubs, and scented-candles before bed… Top of my shopping list is Cowshed’s Knackered Cow Relaxing Bath & Massage Oil (£16) – a silky blend of lavender and eucalyptus oil. I defy you to slide into a bath infused with this stuff and still feel moody – it’s the ultimate pick-me-up. Around the tub, I will place ESPA’s Aromatic Candles (£43.50 for three) – they create a warming, richly-scented ambience within seconds of lighting the wick. Once in the water, I will soften and smooth skin with generous scoops of Philosophy’s Amazing Grace Salt Scrub (£20) – the delicate, ultra-feminine scent instantly lifts spirits. Finally, once dry, I will slather skin with Clinique’s Deep Comfort Body Butter (£20) – it does exactly what it says on the tin, cocooning skin in a blanket of thick, luxurious moisture. If you’d like to join me, why not invest in the above? You’ll discover that the combination is the perfect recipe for happiness.

Beautifully Delicious. Pennies tight after Christmas? Check out the tempting new collection of treats from affordable bath and body brand Beautifully Delicious. I’ve fallen head over heels for the Coconut and Shea collection, which instantly transports me to exotic shores with its punchy, tropical fragrance. The prices are brilliant – and the quality is much, much better than you’d expect from the price-point The collection comprises Body Butter (£4.99), Body Lotion (£4.99), Lip Butter (£2.49), Bath & Shower Cream (£2.99), Bath Sugar Cubes (£3.99), Indulgent Body Scrub (£7.99), Body Scrub (£4.99) and – my personal favourite – Bath Fizzer (£1.99). Sainsburys, Tesco and Boots Nationwide.

Beautyblender. Beautyblender (£14.50) is one of those products you never realised you needed – but once discovered, you can not imagine life without. The egg-shaped cosmetic sponge was created by two top Hollywood makeup artists to give an airbrushed finish to the complexion. It might look a little bizarre – but the unique shape means that it can be used to apply makeup all over the face. It’s also non-irritating, latex-free, non-allergenic, and odourless. I usually find makeup brushes fiddly – but this has convinced me otherwise. It was easy to use and gave a brilliant, flawless result. www.cultbeauty.co.uk

L’OCCITANE. There are very few beauty brands that partake in the January sales, but one that always slashes prices is the luxurious French brand L’OCCITANE – but you will need to be quick, as the sale comes to a close on 13th January… Highlights include the delicious Lavender Daily Shampoo (reduced from £10.75 to £8.27), the divine Organic Olive Cleansing Milk (reduced from £12.75 to £9.81), and the addictive Organic Lavender Sweet Dreams Mist (reduced from £15 to £11.54). The latter is rich in relaxing lavender essential oil to promote peaceful, restorative sleep – I will definitely be stocking up. http://uk.loccitane.com

Vie. If you haven’t yet discovered the benefits of using a complexion primer, I strongly recommend adding Vie at Home’s latest launch - Prime Time (£12) – to your dressing table. The product has a pink-ish tone, which instantly illuminates and brightens skin – if you boast a clear complexion, you might even decide to wear it on its own. If you choose to apply foundation, you’ll be blessed with a silky base for application, a long-lasting feeling of hydration, and a radiant glow. A little goes a very long way, so the tube will last and last. It’s the perfect solution to perking up tired, dull complexions after the excesses of Christmas. www.vieathome.com

Purity. I’ve been a fan of Purity Organic Skincare since I first got my mitts on the products last year. I love the simplicity of the range, along with the wholesome, organic ingredients – and of course, the fabulous price point. This January, however, there’s even more reason to give the products a try – as Superdrug is offering a generous £2 off the entire range throughout the month. Pick from the softening Conditioning Cleansing Lotion, gentle Facial Exfoliator, smoothing Anti-Ageing Moisturiser, Regenerating Overnight Moisturiser, and complexion-boosting Anti-Ageing Serum and Mask (fro £4,99 to £8.99, before discount). Superdrug Nationwide.

Spas & Treatments: WONDERFUL HAIR EXTENSIONS, ATHERTON COX (08.01.10)
What it promises: The Wonderful Hair cold fusion system promises fuller or longer hair in a matter of hours, without the need for heated application. Wonderful Hair offers high quality, beautiful hair that will last up to three months. This new system eliminates the two harmful elements often associated with extensions, heat and glue, which makes them indistinguishable from natural hair. The look is natural and modern.
What happens: Before having hair extensions applied, it is advised to have a consultation to check they are suitable – so I started my appointment with a one-on-one chat to discuss what to expect from the extensions, how to look after them, the length I wanted (40cm standard length or 50cm made to order), the colour (there are 39 to choose from) and the thickness (quarter, half, or full-head). With the initial consultation out of the way, I was greeted by Senior Stylist and Extensionist Andrew Bidwell, who then lead me over to the washbasins for a thorough shampoo to remove build-up of product. After a thorough blow-dry, Andrew divided the hair and began to apply the hair extensions section-by-section using a method called ‘cold fusion’, which uses a high frequency hair gun. I was amazed at how natural the extensions felt – when I ran my fingers through the hair, I couldn’t even feel the join. Once the extensions were in place, Andrew got to work cutting my new locks into a natural and flattering shape. Andrew reminded me to come back a fortnight later for a complimentary aftercare check up, where I would receive a free wash and blow dry and the chance to rectify any problems or get care advice. On my way out of the salon, I was handed an aftercare guide explaining how to care for my hair, along with a complimentary bottle of shampoo, conditioner and a hairbrush.
Results: I cannot believe the transformation. The hair looks just like my own but it is longer, thicker and swishes beautifully behind my back. I am thrilled with the finished results - I have tried lots of different hair extensions over the years and this is by far the best. The colour match was spot on, as was the application. The experience was thoroughly enjoyable and I knew that I was in safe hands throughout. Hair extensions are a pricey treatment so if you are going to splash out, my advice is to go somewhere where they know what they are doing - and at Atherton Cox, you are in very safe hands.
Price: The starting price for Wonderful Hair is £450 but it does depend on the length, thickness, and amount of hair.

Feature: HOME SPA (08.01.10)
Funds low after the festive season? Staying in is the new going out. Take the phone off the hook, lock the bathroom door, and treat your body to our selection of home spa treatments...

FACE
Overindulged over the holidays? One too many late nights spent partying? Our faces are often the first area to show signs of neglect. Now is the time to rectify the damage, by treating skin to a weekly home facial.
Start by using a gentle exfoliator to slough off dead cells and allow the face mask to work its magic. Choose a mask based on your skin type and objectives - and look for ingredients such as clay, designed to draw out impurities, or hydrating naturals, including honey for dryness concerns. Dermalogica’s Skin Hydrating Masque, £27.30 for 75ml (0800 591818) contains calming bitter orange, hops, cucumber and arnica extracts to reduce inflammation and soothe sensitive skin, along with antioxidant rich vitamins to revitalise. It can also be used on the delicate eye area so it is a great all-rounder if money is tight after the holidays.
Sarah Chapman is one of London’s most in-demand facialists and her Skinesis range now allows you to skip the waiting list and sample a taste of the treatments in the comfort of your own home. The luxurious range is a pleasure to use, combining the best that nature has to offer with the latest scientific developments. For the quickest route to glowing skin, try the brand’s hero product Overnight Facial, £41.11 for 15ml (www.spacenk.co.uk). The light serum-oil is easily absorbed, smells divine, and guarantees fabulous skin from the moment you wake up.
One of the most pampering aspects of a professional facial is massage. Whilst the technique may seem intimidating, it’s surprisingly easy to recreate at home using facial oils or even your daily cream. Massage stimulates and adds an enviable radiance to skin, as Noella Gabriel, Director of Product & Treatment Development at Elemis, explains: “The benefit of the home spa experience is not a myth - the body reacts to a little TLC. You can do so much by creating a spa at home in your bathroom, turning it into a colourful experience of tranquillity and escape... it is time out for you. Perform a simple facial massage (do not get obsessed with technique), moving the tips of the fingers along the face, along the jaw, up to the eyes, place gentle pressure on the third eye, then play piano on your forehead with the tips of your fingers, this will deliver an immediate skin radiance, a wonderful pre-occasion routine to deliver a skin WOW factor!”

BODY
It’s all too easy to neglect your body during the winter – yet adding something as simple as a scrub to your daily routine can make a huge difference to the appearance of your skin.
The most pampering scrubs combine a balm base that can be applied directly to dry skin before a bath or shower, as performed in professional spa treatments. These provide highly effective exfoliation, melting on contact and deeply nourishing skin. One such example is REN Guerande Salt Exfoliating Body Balm, £19 for 330ml (www.renskincare.com), which has an invigorating peppermint scent. For a purse-friendly alternative, The Body Shop’s new Spa Wisdom range offers impressive results at reasonable prices. Africa Ximenia & Salt Scrub, £14 for 350ml (www.thebodyshop.co.uk) is a thick balm with small particles of salt to gently slough and polish skin.
Beauty brand Green & Spring, which launched in 2009, takes inspiration from the natural herbs and flowers found in the British countryside surrounding the exclusive Cowley Manor retreat in the Cotswolds, making a piece of their spa treatments assessable for all. Their Indulging Exfoliating Body Balm, £28 for 185ml (www.greenandspring.com) combines sensual jasmine and rose essential oils with soothing chamomile and vetivert in a beeswax and sugar formula – it is ideal for those who prefer a less abrasive scrub.
Want to up the stakes and try something different? A body mask takes home pampering to new levels. It’s hard to beat A-lister favourite, Ole Henriksen African Red Tea Indulgent Body Mask, £60 for 694g www.beautybay.com) to condition and indulge. The mask is jam-packed with natural ingredients, such as hydrating yoghurt and firming algae to leave skin nourished and radiant. Apply a thick layer to exfoliated skin for 30 seconds, rinse and follow with your favourite moisturiser.

BATH
As daily life takes over, it’s easy to underestimate the benefits of a long, indulgent soak in the bath.
Celebrity facialist and founder of the exclusive Lubatti range (from £15.66 at www.spacenk.co.uk), Tracey Malone shares her favourite bathtime tips, “When having a bath, never have the water too hot as this can dry your skin out. Afterwards, always apply a body lotion rich in hydrating ingredients, to ensure any lost moisture is replaced, and apply in firm, upward circular movements. My favourite within the Lubatti Collection is the Tuberose & Mimosa and this is available in both a bath oil and body lotion”.
In Japan, the bathing ceremony has been practised for centuries – and the Dr. Andrew Weil for Origins range takes inspiration from these rituals and brings the, into your own home. The Way of the Bath Matcha Tea Body Soak, £35 for 454g (www.origins.co.uk) is a powder formula that infuses water with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. You are left feeling tranquil and balanced, yet alert. For restorative benefits, try Ortigia Ambra Nera Bath Oil, £26 for 200ml (www.beautyexpert.co.uk), which comprises an exotic blend of warm, spicy essential oils such as patchouli and cedar. Better still, the packaging looks divine in any bathroom.
Whilst the home spa experience is best enjoyed with plenty of spare time, those in a hurry need not feel limited. Aromatherapy Associates’ bestselling Bath & Shower Oils, £34 for 55ml (www.aromatherapyassociates.com) can be applied directly to skin before a shower. They might not be cheap, but the oils boast quality ingredients with genuine therapeutic results, making them worth every penny. Feeling overworked and under pressure? Try De-Stress Mind Bath & Shower Oil with chamomile, petitgrain and frankincense to soothe and help focus thoughts or Deep Relax Bath & Shower Oil to aid relaxation before bed.

HAIR REMOVAL
One of the easiest spa services to recreate in the comfort of your own home is hair removal. At first it may seem like a (quite literal) pain to add to your home beauty regime - yet once you find your preferred method, hair removal at home is a convenient and easy way to save pennies.
For those who opt to shave, check out American brand Whish. The brand’s Shave Crave, £16.43 for 150ml (www.touchmyface.co.uk) is a natural, cream formula that will not dry out skin and is surprisingly enjoyable to use. Choose from exotic lemongrass, tangy pomegranate or indulgent almond fragrances – and follow with Shave Saviour Hair Inhibiting Gel, £14.24 for 220ml, to cool irritated skin and slow hair re-growth.
For long-lasting effects, waxing is well regarded as the best way forward, but what about the ancient method of sugaring? Similar to waxing, fans of sugaring claim it is less painful and preferable for those with sensitive skin. Originating in the Middle East, you can create your own sugaring solution at home using sugar and lemon juice, but for convenience, ready-made kits can be bought. Sugar StripEase, £9.99 for 250g (www.victoriahealth.com) is microwave-safe and can be used on any area of the body. Alternatively, Parissa 2 in 1 Roll-on Body Sugar, £19.99 for 140ml (Boots Nationwide) features an easy-to-use, award-winning design, making it the perfect introduction for beginners.

HANDS & FEET
Spend time perfecting your home manicure and pedicure - and you’ll have others fooled into thinking you have a nail spa on speed dial.
To avoid weakening nails, file in one direction - never back and forth – to reach your desired shape. Ms Manicure Clip, Snip and Away set, £5.99 (www.boots.com) contains all the tools you need to prime nails at home or on the go, including a buffer to help remove stains and stimulate circulation, and orange sticks for pushing back cuticles.
Winter hands can quickly become dry, particularly if you have neglected to wear gloves, so take time to gently exfoliate using award-winning OPI Manicure Skin Renewal Scrub, £10.60 (www.lenawhite.co.uk). For feet, whilst a foot mask may seem like an unnecessary addition to your bathroom cabinet, it is well worth trying Lush Volcano Foot Mask, £7.14 for 250g (www.lush.co.uk) - smoother feet with the thick, cinnamon-scented clay, wrap in cling film or plastic bags, and relax for ten minutes. Massage to exfoliate and rinse thoroughly to reveal softened and deodorised skin.
When it comes to colour, opt for a fresh look with matte shades such as the bestselling Suede range by OPI, £9.95 (www.lenawhite.co.uk), which has taken the brand’s most popular shades (including the infamous ‘Lincoln Park After Dark’) and given them striking new textures and finishes. If you can brave it out of the house and into the shops, forget the sales and head to the Chanel counter. Their new Particuliere shade, £16 (0207 493 3836) - an elegant, wearable mushroom - launches on 29th January and is sure to cause a stir.

MIND
Spending time pampering yourself with beauty treatments offers the perfect opportunity to take stock and focus thoughts.
If you’re cynical about the effectiveness of aromatherapy, NEOM Luxury Organics should be your first step to believing the hype, as founder, Nicola Elliott explains: “Aromatherapy is an incredibly powerful way to treat yourself; from combating stress to feeling happier in yourself. Our Relax scent has been blended with French lavender, Geranium and Juniper to leave you in a state of calm. My number one rule to relax is a long bath and to light our Relax candle as soon as you start running the water – NEOM Luxury Organics candles are powerful enough to fill the room within a few minutes! An oily bath is a brilliant way to get smooth skin whilst inhaling the aromas that relax you at the same time. A good bath oil will have a high percentage of essential oils (not synthetics). NEOM Luxury Organics is as high as you can legally include at 30% - so it packs a seriously relaxing punch! Most importantly, for utter relaxation make sure to put a do not disturb sign on the door and do not remove for at least 30 minutes!” For instantaneous results, try spritzing a room spray such as NEOM Tranquillity Room Mist, £25 for 170ml (www.neomorganics.com) onto fabrics and inhaling the calming blend of English lavender, sweet basil and jasmine. It’s best used before bedtime to promote a restful night.
Lighting candles is one of the quickest and most popular ways to transform your home into a spa setting. When shopping around, look for a high percentage of pure essential oils to gain therapeutic benefits along with a lingering, intense scent. Popular fragrances include revitalising citrus, sensual jasmine and trusty lavender for relaxation. Akeewakee candles, £34.50 (www.senti.co.uk) have a natural soy base, which allows you to breathe safe in the knowledge that you are not inhaling any harmful chemicals. The Sandalwood, Rose and Frankincense fragrance captivates and instils a sense of inner peace.
Luxurious is a word that tends to be over-used in beauty, but its use in describing the new range of premium, signature candles at Space NK (£38 at www.spacenk.co.uk) is well-deserved. Encased in large tumblers with a burn time of up to 60 hours, the high percentage of pure essential oils means that the fragrance fills your chosen room before the candle is even lit!
Yet you needn’t spend a small fortune to unwind. Take the opportunity to practise some basic yoga using a Holistic Silk Yoga Mat, £128 (www.powderrooms.com) or as Sally Penfold, Education Manager at the International Dermal Institute advises, “Resist the urge to have a glass of wine to hand as this serves as a stimulant and will counter all your good work. Rather, have a glass of water with a slice of lime, a herbal tea such as chamomile for relaxation or green tea for antioxidants to fight the aging process. Slow your breathing by counting the in breath for five and the out breath for five. This reduces the breaths per minute dramatically and fools the brain into believing you are relaxed, even when you are not!”
