Tried & Tested: UNDER-EYE CONCEALERS (27.03.09)
Looking for a product to lighten and brighten your tired eyes?
We’ve tested six concealers that promise to instantly disguise those dark under-eye circles.
BY TERRY HIGHLIGHTING CONCEALER BRUSH, £25.45 (www.spacenk.com)
First impressions: Stylish purple packaging, containing a thick silver tube. The brush applicator is unusually large for concealer. The bottom of the tube is clickable, which sends concealer to the brush.
The Results: I’ve recently returned to work after maternity leave and seem to have permanent dark rings under my eyes. I use a thick concealer to try and cover them, but it ends up looking flaky and unnatural. I loved this product. The thick brush covered the circles in one quick sweep and the hydrating formula gave the skin underneath my eyes a lovely sheen. The best bit for me was how well it lasted – I looked in the mirror at lunchtime and my skin was still looking impressively even-toned. It’s quite pricey, but the large tube would last and last.
Best for: Lasting power
BARBARA DALY LIGHT EFFECT CONCEALER PEN, £5.91 (Tesco Stores Nationwide)
First impressions: Sleek monochrome packaging, containing a tube with a clever see-through panel to reveal the shade of the product. The tube has a thin brush, which is loaded with concealer when the base is twisted.
The Results: I loved the texture of this concealer – thick enough to cover my pronounced dark circles, but light enough to look natural. The brush was very thin, which made applying the product very easy. However, I did need to blend and dab the skin with my finger to spread the product evenly over the skin. This concealer is very clever – it has a slight glow, which reflects the light and made me look younger, fresher, and more awake! I’m converted – I’ll be ditching my regular concealer, which costs three times the price.
Best for: Value for money
BOBBI BROWN CREAMY CONCEALER, £14.68 (www.bobbibrown.co.uk)
First impressions: A small black pot, containing a handy mirror and round of concealer. Bobbi Brown recommends applying the product with a concealer brush, which needs to be purchased separately.
The Results: I’d never used a brush to apply concealer before, but found it surprisingly easy to blend this soft cream onto my skin. It wasn’t the quickest process, but the results were worth it. The dark circles under my eyes were completely hidden – there wasn’t a single trace of darker skin. There are 12 shades to choose from, so the concealer was a brilliant match for my skin tone. It looked very natural and had impressive lasting power. I’d highly recommend it.
Best for: Professional results.
CLINIQUE AIRBRUSH CONCEALER, £14.68 (www.clinique.co.uk)
First impressions: A slim tube in classic mint green, with a thin brush for application. The concealer is delivered to the brush by twisting the base of the tube.
The Results: I found this product very easy to use. By twisting the bottom, I could easily control the amount of concealer that traveled to the brush. The concealer is quite thick and after sweeping the brush under my eyes, I still needed to use my finger to work the cream into the skin. I was really impressed with how natural it looked on my skin. I usually wake up to very dark circles under my eyes and this product made it really easy and quick to disguise them.
Best for: A natural look
RMK SUPER BASIC LIQUID CONCEALER, £19 (0161 629 1176)
First impressions: Simple packaging, containing a sleek matte silver tube. The end of the tube clicks to send concealer to the thin, precision-brush.
The Results: I initially found this product a little messy, as an excess of concealer ended up on the brush after just one click. However, after wiping a little off, I was really impressed. I used the brush to apply the thick cream to the skin underneath my eyes and it hid the dark circles instantly. I didn’t even need to use a finger to blend. The coverage was brilliant, making me look suddenly alert and refreshed.
Best for: Quick use
ELIZABETH ARDEN SHEER LIGHTS ILLUMINATING PEN, £19 (Elizabeth Arden Counters Nationwide)
First impressions: Stylish black packaging, containing a sleek oyster-pink tube. The concealer is applied with a thin brush, which is loaded with concealer when the base is twisted.
The Results: I’m in my 50’s and the skin underneath my eyes feels very dry and fragile. I find most under-eye concealers end up looking thick and cakey, so tend to avoid using them. Using this product, however, really suited my skin. It soothed and hydrated the skin as it was applied and instantly covered the dark circles. I also suffer from puffiness and the light-reflecting formula appeared to smooth and tone the skin. It lasted a long time too - I didn’t need to reapply until mid-afternoon. I’d highly recommend it.
Best for: Older skin
Treatment Review: THE ELEMENTAL HERBOLOGY FACIAL, SPA NK (27.03.09)
What it promises: Luxury brand Elemental Herbology have a simple philosophy – to restore equilibrium to your skin, when it’s constantly being altered by environmental, lifestyle, and hormonal fluctuations. Their signature facial promises to rebalance your complexion with a combination of purifying, plumping and hydrating techniques. The brand’s luxurious, yet effective products act to nourish, relax, and feed skin, while extensive circulatory massage helps to reduce physical and mental stress.
What happens: This treatment is available in four London Spa NK locations. My appointment was based at the Hans Crescent branch of Space NK, which sits in the shadow of iconic store Harrods. I made my way to the back of the store, past brightly lit displays packed full of tempting beauty buys, and reported into the spa desk. The receptionist lead me downstairs to the area reserved for Spa NK and suddenly the vibe changed – the lights were dimmer and the décor was a good-enough-to-eat combination of chocolate browns and muted limes. After filling out a detailed form about my skin, my therapist arrived and led me into a candle-lit treatment room. We discussed my skin care concerns and current beauty regime in great detail, which gave me every confidence that I was in very good hands. The treatment began with a thorough cleanse, followed by a generous application of Elemental Facial Glow – a creamy mask exfoliator that gently sloughs away dead surface skin. While it worked it magic, I enjoyed a fabulous shoulder and neck massage to loosen up stress-related tension. After removing the mask with soothing hot towels, the therapist moved the massage onto my face, before applying a second mask to hydrate my skin, Elemental Herbology Facial Soufflé. My feet were, at this point, treated to a heavenly massage. To conclude the treatment, the mask was removed, my skin was thoroughly moisturised, and a cooling eye gel was applied. I was left to relax for a few minutes, before rousing myself from the cocoon-like bed.
Results: Prior to having the treatment, I loved the idea that the facial would balance both my skin and emotional wellbeing – and I wasn’t at all disappointed. My shoulders and neck felt looser, my mind felt cleared, and my skin felt wonderfully soft. The facial is tailored to specific skin concerns and I found the whole experience very personal. My complexion is usually combination – dryness on the cheeks, oiliness on the T-Zone, but in the days following the facial I noticed that the skin seemed a lot more balanced. I’d highly recommend this facial for a truly bespoke beauty experience.

Breaking News: SKINCEUTICALS LAUNCHES PHLORETIN CF™ - THE NEW ANTIOXIDANT SUPER SERUM (27.03.09)
We’re always excited when a revolutionary new anti-ageing product hits the shelves, but hearing about SkinCeutical’s newest launch has got our heartbeats racing a little faster than usual… After five years of extensive research, the award winning cosmeceutical skincare line has created PHLORETIN CF™ – a ground breaking age prevention and repair serum. The product was recently launched in the US to critical acclaim and sold like hotcakes. It has just arrived in the UK and we predict it’ll be one of 2009’s most popular launches. We’ll be racing you – and SkinCeutical’s loyal celebrity following - to the shelves to get our hands on it.
The product was developed by Dr Pinnell (pictured left), an expert in the field of dermatology, antioxidants, collagen chemistry, and sun protection. Clinical studies show that, after using PHLORETIN CF™ for as little as four weeks, you can expect to see a radical reduction in fine lines, wrinkles, blotchy texture, and age spots – leaving the complexion dramatically healthier, firmer, and visibly improved.
So, how does it work? PHLORETIN CF™’s revolutionary technology combines the newly discovered, broad-range power of Phloretin; a powerful antioxidant derived from the skin and flesh of apples, along with Root Bark from pear and grapefruit trees. This is combined with pure Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid), which has been clinically proven to stimulate collagen synthesis, along with Ferulic Acid; a powerful plant-derived antioxidant that seeks and destroys free radicals and improves the performance of vitamin C. The result? A strengthened support structure on the inside and a more youthful, firm, radiant appearance on the outside.
Using the product is easy – simply apply 4-5 drops to a dry face, neck, and chest every morning after cleansing. For optimum anti-ageing results, the brand recommends following with SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Gel and a SkinCeuticals moisturiser and sunscreen.
PHLORETIN CF™ is on shelves now, retailing for £128 for a 30ml bottle. For stockist enquiries call SkinBrands on 0208 9978541 or visit www.skinbrands.co.uk

Blog: ELIZABETH HALLET EXPLAINS WHY SHE WAS COMPELLED TO CREATE ELIZABETH’S DAUGHTER SKINCARE…. (27.03.09)
Having suffered with problem skin throughout my life, from my early teens right through to adulthood, I really appreciate that beauty runs further than skin deep. Having poor skin can have a profound negative impact psychologically on all of us, but especially during our teenage years when confidence and self-esteem can already be an issue.
My own 13 year old daughter, Anna, inspired me to create the Elizabeth’s Daughter skincare range. Her growing interest in beauty and looking after her appearance brought back memories of my own struggles at that age and I really wanted to do all that I possibly could to ensure she would not share my experiences.
Luckily, having worked in the beauty arena for many years, I was able to ask some of the best botanical experts available to help me achieve my goal - developing gentle products that really work for and that appeal to young girls, nurturing their skin and their self esteem. There is an alarming array of harsh, chemical products for teenage skin available on pharmacy and store shelves that only serve to strip the skin of its valuable, protective natural oils and which can exacerbate skin problems and cause further irritation.
Elizabeth’s Daughter products are on average 95% natural and use some of the most innovative plant ingredients available and the whole range is paraben, petrochemical and sulphate free. They are rich in plant extracts, fresh fruit cells and vegetable oils and we have searched the far-flung corners of the earth to come up with the best possible ingredients to protect and care for delicate, young skins. Fresh Pumpkin, Strawberry and Kiwi cells, due to our special extraction method, remain intact until they ‘burst’ on the skin, ensuring all their precious active ingredients provide the ultimate results; Water Lily extract, often referred to as “water nymph” or “queen of the lake” is used within The Bath & Shower Gel for its cooling properties; Amazonian White Clay, included in our best-selling Cleansing Mask is sustainably sourced from the Rain Forest from a well-managed Biodiversity Enhancement programme and is one of the best natural impurity extractors around; Sacha Inchi Oil from Peru has a rich legacy from their ancient civilisations and is particularly high in Omega 3; Australian Kakadu Plum Extract is one of the highest natural sources of vitamin C, equivalent to 10 oranges!
We have had a wonderful response from many young girls, who tell us that their skin has never felt, or looked, better. An unexpected bonus is that we have also had many mothers admit they have been ‘borrowing’ their daughters’ products, as they are finding they also work fabulously well on sensitive, older skins. The best reward of all is that Anna has fresh, beautiful skin, as do all her friends!
ELIZABETH’S DAUGHTER IS AVAILABLE FROM HARVEY NICHOLS NATIONWIDE AND SELECT JOHN LEWIS: OXFORD STREET LONDON W1, PETER JONES, LONDON SW3, EDINBURGH, BRISTOL & NEWCASTLE. ALSO FROM WWW.ELIZABETHSDAUGHTER.COM
Feature: CREDIT CRUNCH SPAS / LUXE FOR LESS (27.03.09)
With the recession in full swing, you may think a luxury spa service is a stretch too far for your purse strings. Think again… Living the spa dream needn’t burn a hole in your pocket.
THE CITY ESCAPE
Take a good look at your local high street and you might spot evidence of the incredible growth of urban spas in cities and towns across the UK. This is good news in these cash-strapped days, meaning your wellbeing fix doesn’t have to take you out of your hometown or slap you with a heavy price tag. It’s also the perfect environment for express services that give you a lunchtime treat, with more than enough time to grab a sandwich too.
This trend has given birth to a new chain of metropolitan spas from well-known health spa resort Champneys (www.champneys.co.uk); bringing its popular flavour of wellbeing to your local neighbourhood. These spas are all about time-friendly treatments that recognise we’re all economising. Sadly Champneys’ Town & City Spas have yet to hit northern England, but those of you in the south can check out locations in Bath, Brighton and Guildford to name a few.
The north, however, boasts its own version of the luxury-resort-turned-high street-haven. Named Serenity in the City (www.serentiyinthecity.com), it has venues in Edinburgh and Newcastle. It operates ‘Student Tuesdays’ where a Back and Shoulder Massage comes as little as £20, while a 20% discount is available on other treatments.
Yet perhaps the biggest champion of ‘spa for the people’ goes to east London’s public space called Spa London. It works with the local authority in east London to offer cut-price thermal spa experiences (from an impressive £6 for the borough’s residents) plus it ticks all the boxes expected of a slick spa.
SMALL INDULGENCES
Recession or no recession, us Brits are not giving up on our beauty products. This has been dubbed the ‘lipstick effect’: the act of cutting out large extravagant purchases such as cars and instead allowing ourselves to indulge in small luxuries. Spas are great hunting grounds for affordable high-end beauty brands.
Make your money go further at Calcot Manor (www.calcotmanor.co.uk), a 14th Century English farmhouse in the Cotswolds, surrounded by 220 acres of rolling countryside. It’s offering a free Aromatherapy Associates Body Wash (worth £17) when you book a massage. Aromatherapy Associates counts celebrity fans such as Helena Christensen and Sadie Frost, so you’d better be quick!
Organic specialist NEOM (www.neomorganics.com) is also running a similar promotion. The brand, which is currently stocked at A-list hang out Berkeley Spa in London, is giving away a free body wash worth £16 on purchases over £50.
Choose wisely and you can save pounds on products that do more than one job. Take for instance ESPA’s Pink Hair and Scalp Mud (£29 for 180ml; www.espa.com). It’s a hair conditioner, chlorine/sun hair protector as well as a body moisturiser and sunburn soother. Elemis’s Exotic Frangipani Monoi Moisture Melt (£29 for 100ml; www.elemis.com) is another multi-functional find. It harnesses the power of Monoi Oil, which Polynesian women have used for centuries as an all-round moisturiser. Watch it melt into your skin after a bath, or run it through your hair for an intensive treatment.
CUT-PRICE PARADISE
Ever thought of taking a break at a first-class spa resort with all the trimmings? Of course you have. The stiff reality is a weak pound and a diabolical exchange rate in Europe means many of us are waving goodbye to that glorious sunshine break. But expand your search outside of the EU and you could snag your spa dream on a shoestring. Turkey is a destination that not only offers all-year sunshine, but authentic spa treatments at rock-bottom prices. A visit to the city of Istanbul is deemed worthless if you’re not considering sampling the traditional hammams. Check out Cemberlitas Hamman (www.cemberlitashamami.com.tr) in the Old Town. For £13 you can sample an age-old ritual that consists of a body wash, exfoliation and massage within a temple of wellbeing built in 1584 for the Sultans.
Grab the lower prices while you can and check out the largest spa in the Middle East, which recently opened at the Kempinski Hotel Ishtar Dead Sea in Jordan (www.kempinski-deadsea.com). Rooms rates are as low as £68 – a snip considering the natural spa mud is just a stone’s throw away.
Another great tip is to get off to a head start and book before the rush. Watch out for ‘soft launches’ - when spa hotels open their doors before their official launch date, and you might secure yourself a brilliant introductory rate.
As the recession bites, the number of us holidaying at home jumps. Luckily for us in the UK, we have some of the finest all-singing all-dancing spas that combine everything from all the mod cons of a cutting-edge spa, five-star accommodation and Michelin-starred restaurant. Now with an uncertain market, even the most elite spas are ready to offer excellent value breaks that won’t break the bank.
If you’re planning to stay in Britain this summer why not relax and unwind at Center Parcs (www.centerparcs.com). Operating four sites across the country it’s a step up from the average family holiday destination. At each venue there’s an Aqua Sana spa where you can sample the very best spa facilities. Try the Aqua Sana Two-Night Escape. This includes access to the mighty ‘World of Spa’, which is dazzling array of thermal rooms and experiences, plus a 55 minute dry floatation experience for £295 per person (Monday to Thursday).
DESERVED DOWNTIME
If you’re looking for a spa facial or massage for minimal cost but with maximum effect, you’re in luck. Some of the best-known names in spa have developed no-frills treatments that deliver real tangible results while keeping prices down. Try out the recently refurbished Elemis Day Spa in Mayfair (www.elemis.com) where you can experience a no-nonsense facial in its futuristic SpaPod. The treatment takes place in a luxurious treatment room where an expert therapist delivers a choice of five intensive Elemis Power Booster Facials. It’s 30 minutes, no clothes need to be removed, and it’s a crowd-pleasing £45.
Head to health-hydro and thermal spa Ragdale Hall in Leicestershire (www.ragdalehall.co.uk) and indulge in a menu of speedy 25-minute treatments from SpaFind. Made with Dead Sea mud it includes: Mini Foot Treatment, Mini Hand Treatment, Back Massage, and Facial Treatment.
If a more extended spa service takes your fancy, SpaFind also offers 2-in-1 Petites, (which is) a collection of 45-minute treatments that combine two elements of spa therapy such as exfoliation and massage, or facial and massage. For more exceptional deals check out the spa’s website (www.spafindskincare.com), which includes 25% off two nights or more and 20% off its day packages.
INSIDER KNOWLEDGE
Can’t find the right deals? To bag yourself a true spa bargain you need to swot up on the latest insider know-how.
Fortunately, there are plenty of web-based spa services, gifting Internet sites, and spa-specific travel agents to lend a helping hand. Having recently launched in the UK, Wahanda (www.wahanda.com) is a new website with ambitions to transform the way we purchase our spa breaks and treatments. It operates a useful feedback service (along the lines of eBay) so you can check out how previous guests have rated the spa you have in mind. It’s currently offering readers of The-Beauty-Pages.com a 10% discount on its spa vouchers (Click here for details).
Log onto Wahanda and you’ll find a host of incredible savings at spas across the country. It includes a whopping 50% off a Bliss Pamper Day at the Chelsea Harbour Club, which includes a luxury 45 minute Manicure and 45 minute Pedicure plus unlimited use of the wet spa facilities. Wahanda has also teamed up with Norton House in Edinburgh to offer a £55 Special Occasion Spa Day, featuring one pampering mini treatment with a glass of champagne, plus full use of the stunning spa facilities for you and a friend.
Other fantastic spa seeking websites include www.spafinder.co.uk and www.lastminute.com, where you can come across some amazing 2-for-1 deals.
Another way to stay ahead of the spa pack is to make sure you’re with the right crowd. Mr and Mrs Smith (www.mrandmrssmith.com) has become synonymous with top of the range luxury breaks. Become a member for as little as £15 per year and you’ll be the first in the queue for free nights and huge savings at the world's best boutique hotels. Right now you can get two nights for the price of one at Seaham Hall in County Durham, which boasts the award-winning Serenity Spa.
Lastly, remember it’s a buyer’s market right now so don’t be afraid to ask about deals or complimentary add-ons when booking – and barter!
DIY SPA
If your budget’s not stretching far, the cheapest way to get your spa fix is to turn your home into a spa haven. If you don’t want to fork out for a professional treatment just now, get spa savvy and re-create the spa experience by realising the potential of what your home offers. Philip Davies, founder and owner of Glow Urban Day Spa in Mayfair (www.glowurbanspa.co.uk) is a firm believer in home-grown treatments. He’s recently introduced a treatment line called Raw to the spa, made simply from fresh ingredients and made on the day for spa guests. He suggests making a DIY body scrub: mix two cups of coarse sea salt, four cups of almond of grape seed oil and 20-30 drops of your favourite essential oil. Massage the paste in circular movements once in the shower or bath, leaving your skin super-soft.
However spas aren’t just about hands-on therapy. Much of the spa experience is delivered through ambience. Think beautiful soft lighting and gorgeous scents for authentic ways to turn your home into a spa sanctuary. Light up Clarins’ new Eau d’Ambiance Scented Candle, £24 (www.uk.clarins.com) which is an aromatic blend of green basil, enveloping patchouli and zesty lemon and sage. Likewise, Yon-Ka (www.yonka.com) has released a new candle to take home that’s part of an exciting new treatment, which exploits the aromatic oils produced from burning the candle while capturing its arising scent. Made from 100% natural essential oils and plant butters including petitgrain, lavender and vebena it’s a great way to relax the body and mind.
Feature: ANTI-AGEING ( 20.03.09)
Worried about wrinkles? Stressed about sagging skin? Losing sleep over thinning locks? We’ve compiled the ultimate Anti-Ageing guide - to explain why those youthful looks are disappearing and the ways that we can claim them back…
Words by: Louise Emma Clarke
FACE
Wrinkles, fine lines and age spots – it’s only a matter of time… Why? There are two ways that our skin starts to age– naturally and environmentally. As we get older, collagen and elastin start to break down in our skin and we notice that our complexion is losing its plump, smooth, youthful glow. This natural process is accelerated by damage from our environment – such as exposure to the sun, pollution, smoking and alcohol. The Solution? The number one cause of skin damage is the sun. Wearing an SPF every day on your skin is the biggest and most important step that we can take to halt the ageing process and prevent the development of age spots. Treat skin to a daily application of Simple Repair Anti-Wrinkle Day Cream with sunscreens, £7.99 for 50ml (Boots Nationwide). Free Radicals are also not good news for our skin. Our bodies produce them when we feel stressed and when we expose ourselves to environmental damage. They cause skin cells to irreversibly break down – cue skin ageing. To combat Free Radicals, our bodies produce Antioxidants - but supplies start to dwindle as we get older. Thankfully, there are certain measures we can take to boost levels. The experts recommend popping antioxidant supplements on a daily basis – try Dermalogica Multivitamin Power Concentrate, £33.70 for 45 capsules (0800 591818). Each capsule contains a concentrated dose of vitamins A, C, E and F. Anti-ageing beauty products are becoming ever more innovative. One of the latest launches, which is causing ripples of excitement in the beauty world, is Lancôme Génifique Youth Activating Concentrate, £52.50 (www.lancome.co.uk). Scientists spent 10 years researching and developing this product, discovering that certain proteins present on the skin’s surface are characteristic of skin’s youth. Over time, they found that these proteins decreased and skin started to age. The silky-smooth serum, applied with a pipette, works to stimulate the skin’s surface and increase production of these magic proteins.
EYES
They might be the windows to our souls – but the skin around our eyes is often the first part of our body to show the signs of ageing. Why? The skin underneath our eyes is the thinnest and most delicate on our body. As collagen production slows, the skin becomes ever more fragile. We move our eyes continuously – to speak, to smile, to blink – so it’s little surprise that this is the first place we start to notice lines and wrinkles forming. Puffiness, dark circles, and bags are also more prevalent in later life, usually caused by fluid build-up as we sleep. The Solution? Thought celebrities were wearing those huge sunglasses as a disguise? Think again. The A-Listers are onto something – squinting is a sure-fire way to speed up formation of thin, crêpey lines around the eyes. Carry sunglasses in your handbag 365 days a year – and pull them out whenever you feel yourself squinting. If you wear glasses, make sure your eyes are regularly tested and you are wearing the correct prescription. There’s a plethora of anti-ageing eye creams on the market. When you’re shopping around, look for a product that promises to resolve multiple problems – wrinkles, fine lines, dark circles, and puffiness. Dr Lewinn’s Private Formula Ultra R4 Eye Repair Cream, £40 for 15g (www.drlewinns.co.uk) contains a revolutionary anti-ageing ingredient called Palmitoyl Tripeptide-3, often referred to as ‘synthetic collagen’ as it mimics the body’s own mechanism to produce collagen. The cream also contains Dipeptide-2 (to reduce puffiness), Pomegranate (an antioxidant), and Matsutake (an Asian mushroom known for its brightening properties). If you’re losing sleep worrying about dark circles, it’s well worth investing in SKII Signs Eye Cream, £50 (www.harrods.com). The rich cream is specially formulated to sweep away tiredness, leaving the eye area looking visibly refreshed and rejuvenated. It contains Pitera – a clear, nutrient-rich liquid that has become known around the world as ‘the secret key to beautiful skin’.
HANDS
They say you can tell a woman’s true age by her hands – yours are looking gaunt, wrinkled, and showing signs of pigmentation. Why? The skin on our hands is much thinner than that on our face, with far less fat to disguise wrinkles. We constantly expose them to the sun and dry out the skin with constant use, acidic household cleaners, and regular dunkings in water. All this – yet most of us completely neglect our mitts when considering our skin care regime. The Solution? Inject much-needed moisture with regular slatherings of a rich, hydrating hand cream. Put a tube into every handbag, next to every sink in the house, and onto your desk so that you never forget to apply it. Anti-ageing hand creams have come on in leaps and bounds in recent years, with ever more innovative formulas hitting shelves. Clinique Stop Signs Hand Repair, £12.72 (www.clinique.co.uk) is one the best. It contains botanical ingredients to fade the appearance of age spots (caused when melanin in the skin reacts with sunlight), collagen-boosting ingredients to help minimise crêpiness and lines, plus vitamins and antioxidants to prevent further damage caused by the environment. Its light gel-like formula sinks instantly into hands, leaving them feeling beautifully soft. Put a stop to any future sun damage by investing in Eve Lom Hand Cream SPF10, £19.57 (www.evelom.com). It contains salicylic acid and kokum butter to smooth and brighten the skin, bisobolol to soothe and heal, and jajoba oil and beeswax to seal in extra moisture. Hands in need of an intensive pick-me-up will benefit hugely from 15-20 minutes cocooned in The Sanctuary’s Moisture Infused Gloves, £19.57 (www.thesanctuary.co.uk). The Avocado, Grapeseed, and Olive oil gel-lined gloves leave skin looking refreshed, smoothed, and plumped.
NECK
Suddenly, you look in the mirror and notice that the skin on your neck looks ten years older than your face… Why? The skin on our neck is dry and very fine – it has very few fat cells and produces little sebum to keep the skin hydrated. We move our necks constantly throughout the day, which gradually loosens collagen and elastin. Our necks are often neglected in our beauty regimes, yet need as much attention as the skin on our faces. The Solution? Think of your neck as an extension of your face. Treat it to the same routine and the same products – it’ll take just a few seconds extra at the dressing table, yet the benefits will be dramatic. Sweep a gentle cleanser over the skin and massage in a rich moisturiser at least once a day. It’s well worth treating yourself to a product dedicated to lifting and smoothing the neck. One of the most effective is Elemis Pro-Collagen Lifting Treatment for Neck and Bust, £70 for 50ml (www.timetospa.co.uk). The list of ingredients reads like an exotic recipe – a scoop of Royal Jelly, a dash of Seabuckthorn, a pinch of Propolis, plus a generous splash of Samphire and Cistacea aromatic waters. The result is a lightweight cream, which sinks instantly into skin, and leaves the neck looking far smoother and firmer. Another worthy option is Champneys Collagen Plus Restructuring Neck and Décolletage Cream, £15 for 60ml (www.champneys.com). The formula contains Hexapeptide Collaxyl to stimulate collagen production in the skin and a generous dose of Vitamin E to boost antioxidant levels. Massaging the rich, comforting cream into your neck will feel like a real luxury.
BODY
Your skin has lost its firm, youthful bounce, everything seems to be drooping south, and it’s never been so dry and leathery. Why? The skin on our body is much thicker than that on our face, with fewer sebaceous glands to keep it moisturised. As we age, the skin gets thinner, drier, and rougher. Thanks to slowing production of collagen and elastin, it starts to lose its elasticity and firmness. Gravity takes hold, causing sagging in areas like the knees, under arms and bust. The Solution? As much as you love the fragrance of your regular body moisturiser, it’s time to swap to a product specifically designed to tackle ageing of the skin. A new generation of highly innovative body products are currently being launched onto the market – they don’t come cheap, but they promise to provide impressive results. There’s a lot of buzz in the beauty industry at the moment over the newly launched Prevage Body Total Transforming Anti-Aging Moisturiser, £95 for 200ml (Elizabeth Arden Counters Nationwide). The lightweight cream contains clinically-proven ingredients Idebenone and Tripeptide Complex, which promise to show anti-ageing results in just six weeks. Idebenone helps to protect skin from environmental assaults, plus minimises the appearance of age spots and sun damage. Tripeptide Complex works supports natural levels of collagen and elastin, whilst also boosting hydration levels. Regular use of the product will work to firm skin, combat dryness, minimise sun damage, improve texture, and boost radiance. For instant results, treat yourself to Elemis Pro-Collagen Body Serum Intensive Lift, £45 (www.timetospa.co.uk). The silky-smooth serum is quickly absorbed into the skin, giving an immediate feeling of skin firmness and lift, which the brand describes as an ‘invisible body-stocking’ effect. The product is packed with an anti-ageing Peptide, Acacia, Paracress, and marine extract Padina Pavonica.
HAIR
Your hair used to be thick, bouncy, and full of volume – now it’s increasingly thin, brittle, and feeling very dry. Why? Hormonal changes cause our hair to become thinner and more fragile as we age. As the colour turns to grey, locks lose their silky-smooth texture and start to feel drier and coarser. The Solution? Replace those bottles on the shower shelf with products specifically designed for older hair. Thankfully, the beauty industry has recognised the demand for anti-ageing hair care and there is a plethora of choice. Revive locks with Fekkai Advanced Haircare Ageless Rejuvenating Shampoo and Conditioner, £28 each for 200ml (Selfridges and Space NK Nationwide). The formula contains keratins, antioxidants, and proteins to visibly correct the signs of ageing. The hair cuticle is cleaned and primed, which helps it to better provide nutrients to the hair. It smells delicious and leaves tresses feeling silky smooth. It’s worth introducing a rich, ultra-hydrating hair mask to your hair care regime, such as Paul Labrecque Restorative Protein Mask, £24 for 200ml (www.beautyexpert.co.uk). The product contains rich Silk Proteins, Eggs, and Soy milk extracts to hydrate dry, brittle overstressed hair, while Macadamia nut, Abyssinian, and Coconut Oils seal in moisture to improve softness. Finally, swap your protective heat spray to one that is designed for older hair. One of the best is Charles Worthington Time Defy Heat Defence Styling Spray, £5.49 (Boots Nationwide).

Tried & Tested: DRY SHAMPOO (13.03.09)
Always rushed in the morning? Save time by reviving hair between washes with a dry shampoo. We’ve tested six of the top brands.
ANGELFISH FRESHANGEL FRAGRANCED DRY SHAMPOO, £2.93 for 75ml (Exclusively at Boots).
What they say: Fresh Angel Fragranced Dry Shampoo will quickly and easily revitalise and fragrance lacklustre, greasy hair between washes.
The Results: As soon as I sprayed this product onto my hair, I fell in love with the stunning scent. It reminded me of exotic holidays – fruity, with definite traces of coconut. Despite being a brunette, there was no obvious trace of powder in my hair and it appeared instantly refreshed. My hair suddenly had volume and looked as clean as when I blow-dried it the day before. The small 75ml spray fits easily in a handbag, so it’s great for taking to work to refresh locks before a night out. The only downside is that it’s small and the can has nearly run out already.
Best for: Feel-good fragrance
KMS CALIFORNIA HAIRPLAY MAKEOVER SPRAY, £13.11 for 200ml (www.lookfantastic.com).
What they say: Make-over your style with this new forceful spray, excellent for quick touch ups or re-styling. With the addition of rice powder, this matte spray absorbs excess oil, increases hair volume at the roots, enhances overall texture and builds bulk, leaving hair refreshed and clean.
The Results: I have thin hair, which starts to look very limp if I don’t wash it every day. I found this product really easy to use. I turned my head upside down and sprayed the product into the roots. I needed to comb the hair through afterwards, as I could see the powder, but it only took seconds to do. Suddenly my hair had doubled in volume – it genuinely looked like I had just washed it. I wasn’t a huge fan of the fragrance – a sweet, fruity scent – but I hardly noticed it throughout the day. I’m very impressed with this product – I’m definitely taking it with me when I go to festivals in the summer.
Best for: Increasing volume
BUMBLE AND BUMBLE HAIR POWDER, £15 for 1oz (www.beautique.com).
What they say: Hair powders add sexy va-va volume, extend the life of a blow dry by absorbing excess oil and provide a dry texture that keeps pins and clips from slipping (so styles stay put).
The Results: Bumble and Bumble hair powders come in five colour variations – Brown, Red, White, Blondish, and Black – so they can blend perfectly into your hair colour. I’m a brunette, so was sent Brown to test. I sprayed the product onto my roots and waited for the powder to dry, before brushing through with my fingers. It was quite messy, as some of the product came off on my hands. However, I loved the fact that I wasn’t left with white roots – in fact, as my hair is due a re-colour, the product actually helped to disguise the regrowth! Better still, my hair looked cleaner and refreshed.
Best for: Matching colour
FEKKAI AU NATUREL DRY SHAMPOO, £18 for 83g (Available at Space NK)
What they say: Conserve time – and water. This quick-fix powder gives hair a fresh start with second-day body and lift. 99% natural formula contains cotton to absorb oil, instantly.
The Results: I found this product really easy to apply – you simply direct the thin nozzle towards your roots and shake the bottle to apply the powder. I have blonde hair, which is probably a good thing, as the powder is very white and required a lot of brushing to make it disappear into the hair. There’s no fragrance, which was a big plus point for me - a scented dry shampoo just reminds me that my hair is dirty! The results were impressive – every trace of greasiness had disappeared.
Best for: Absorbing oil
BATISTE DRY SHAMPOO, £2.05 for 150ML (www.boots.com)
What they say: Batiste Dry Shampoo is an essential beauty product that will leave your hair smelling fragrant and looking fabulous in seconds. Batiste Original has a light citrus fragrance and is perfect for in between washes and girls on the go.
The Results: Batiste is the original dry shampoo and the retro-style can is obviously celebrating this fact. I was really impressed with the price – seriously good value for a generous 150ml can. I held the can at arm’s length and sprayed the product liberally through my hair. I loved the citrus fragrance – it’s light, refreshing, and reminded me of freshly-washed hair. I was left with quite a lot of visible powder, especially around my roots, but it only took a quick brush to disappear. I’m going camping this summer and will definitely be taking a can with me – it’s a small price to pay for clean hair.
Best for: The budget buy
LEE STAFFORD POKER STRAIGHT DRY SHAMPOO, £4.88 for 150ml (www.boots.com)
What they say: Lee Stafford Poker Straight Dry Shampoo is part of the award winning Poker Straight range. It helps battle against fluff and frizz, protect and care for your hair, but most importantly leaves your hair Poker Straight.
The Results: I suffer from very greasy roots and wash my hair every day, without fail. I was quite nervous about using this product, so saved it for the weekend so I didn’t have to suffer greasy hair at work if it failed! I’m happy to report that my fears were unfounded. I followed the instructions on the can and sprayed from roughly 16cm onto the root area. I’ve heard that dry shampoos can leave a lot of white powder in your roots, so was very impressed that my hair only needed a quick brush. Suddenly, my roots were looking as clean and fresh as they do after a wash. Sadly, it didn’t have the same volume, so I’d still wash my hair given the choice. But I’ll definitely be using this product on days when I’m stretched for time and on weekends. I’m really impressed.
Best for: Greasy roots
Treatment Review: CRABTREE & EVELYN SPICY BODY SCRUB, AT SAVANA URBAN SPA (13.03.09)
What it promises: A full body wash, brush and exfoliation using Crabtree & Evelyn Aromatherapy Distillations products. The treatment is finished with hot towels and a short invigorating massage. This is the ultimate way to exfoliate your body to silky-smooth perfection.
What happens: I arrived at Savana Urban Spa, located in the heart of London’s Notting Hill, and made my way upstairs to the reception area. I knew instantly that I’d arrived at a stylish destination – vanilla-toned walls, deep chocolate brown sofas, and strips of bright modern lighting. After changing my footwear to comfortable flip-flops, I was lead to a curtained cubicle to change and then into a stunning treatment room lit by flickering night-lights. Hearing the soothing music and smelling the luxurious fragrance of the room prompted me to instantly relax and I couldn’t wait to hop onto the treatment bed, lined with butter-soft waffle towels. The therapist started the treatment by briskly brushing my body to boost circulation. In strong sweeping movements, the skin was then exfoliated with Crabtree and Evelyn’s Distillations Skin Conditioning Body Wash, which felt fabulous as it foamed. Another Distillations product, the Exfoliating Spice Medley, was then blended with Ultra Moisturising Body Butter to create an exfoliating lotion. The therapist applied it to my body and then patted down with hot towels. To finish, I enjoyed an invigorating short massage and a further application of the Body Butter to lock much-needed moisture into my skin.
Results: To allow the oils to fully absorb, I was advised not to bathe or shower for the next 3-4 hours. This was fine by me – the spicy scent of cinnamon and cardamom that clung to my body after the treatment was beautiful. My skin was glowing – my freckles winked through my skin as if I’d spent a few hours in the sunshine. Better still, my skin felt supple, smooth, and firm. I’d highly recommend this treatment – not only is it hugely indulgent and relaxing, but it also leaves your body in tip-top condition. I’ll definitely be back.
Price: £85 for 55 minutes.

Blog: BOURJOIS MAKEUP ARTIST CASSIE LOMAS SHOWS US HOW TO CREATE A NATURALLY GLOWING COMPLEXION (20.03.09)
I’m often asked how I make my celebrity clients complexions look naturally glowing… Here are a few top tips and my secret weapons for Spring:
Great skin - if you don't already have it, it is automatically enhanced by a bit of colour. Don't be piling on the base - simply dab a little cream concealer sparingly over any blemishes. Make sure it is the same colour as your new complexion and not lighter, as you can only get away with that if you're pale. Concentrate on the blending, as unsightly blotches of panstick are a no no! Cover any dark circles with a light reflecting concealer, like Bourjois Brush Concealer. A good tip for reapplying during the day is to dab a bit of moisturiser over the concealer before adding another layer. So we now have fresh, youthful skin with minimal application....
Perk up the cheeks with a splash of colour, using mini Bourjois Cream Blush. Use your fingertip to apply in circular swirls over the apples of the cheeks, whilst smiling. These blushes have an amazing velvety texture with an iridescent finish, so it dries to touch but looks dewy to the eye. I also spread a little over the eyelids for a sexy heatwave effect finish.
Now as much as we'd love to not have to use any face powder, warmer days just won't allow it. Come in the new Mineral powder from Bourjois, with it's mineral quartz ingredients, radiant is the only way your skin can look , whilst remaining shine free. Use a big fluffy brush to lightly smooth over the skin, paying most attention to the t-zone and neck. You can enhance the tan further by opting for a darker shade!
For a final blast of the glow stick, a highlighter will provide that finishing touch. As you've applied the mineral powder go for a powder face highlighter over it. Bourjois Illuminating Touche is indispensable, it glides over make up and picks up the light in the areas the sun would naturally hit. Don't overdo as it may be hard to see in the mirror but when you naturally move people will notice it's delicate shimmer. I also like to dab a little over gloss for a fuller pout.
Bourjois products are available from Boots and Superdrug stores nationwide and online at www.Asos.com
Feature: SPRING CLEAN YOUR MAKEUP BAG (13.03.09)
We’re well versed in detoxing our bodies and dab hands at de-cluttering our wardrobes, so why are our makeup bags left to wallow? Now is the time to clean and streamline.
Divide and conquer
You probably don’t realise it but your bathroom is where you are most likely to speed up your makeup’s deterioration – all that humidity wreaks havoc with cosmetics’ shelf life. So ditch the cabinet, divide your makeup into two essential bags, and store in a cool dark place. Choose one that is big enough for your essentials, but small enough to fit in your handbag, and another vanity case that is easy to tote. Louis Vuitton has the ultimate tote, from £155 (0207 399 4050). But there are plenty of affordable alternatives from £9.90 at (www.hqhair.com). London boutique Coco Ribbon has just added a range of zip-up makeup bags to its collection in signature bespoke prints. Each has been designed to be the perfect size for your handbag, with waterproof lining and a mini pocket on the inside. Our favourite is Butterfly, £18 (www.cocoribbon.com). Alternatively, you could put your old cosmetic case in a lingerie bag and rinse it on a low cycle in your washing machine - et voila, it’ll look at good as new.
Wash-up
While splashing out on expensive skin solutions, you’ve probably overlooked the true cause of your breakouts; bacteria on brushes. Laborious as it sounds, once a month you need to fill a basin with water and give all your brushes a thoroughly good clean, particularly those used for concealers. While you’re at it, throw in any makeup sponges - Estee Lauder has a great conditioning brush cleaner, £9.79 (www.esteelauder.co.uk). Avoid drying them upright - the moisture can cause the bristles to spread and plastic to crack - instead air-dry them on the edge of a table.
As a general rule, it is good to get into the habit of using a clean brush or applicator rather than your fingers to apply your makeup, (Clinique’s are great, from £17, 0870 034 2566) and don’t forget your hairbrush. A spokesperson for Mason Pearson says: “Cleaning can really prolong the life of your brush, as grease and hair products can accumulate quickly causing the rubber pad to deteriorate. Our larger models all come with a Cleaning Brush but you can always use a narrow toothbrush.” (Mason Pearson, 020 7491 2613)
Check the shelf life
Just like food, all your cosmetics come with a use-by date - you’ll find it in the little jar symbol on the side of the container, as pictured. If it’s passed, ditch it. After all, would you eat something that had been open that long? Anne Carullo, senior vice president of global product development at Estee Lauder uses the following as general rule of thumb - mascara lasts two to three months; blush and eye shadow, one year; moisturiser/cleanser/eye cream, six months; liquid foundation, eight months; lipstick two to three years and eye liner the same, but always make sure they are regularly sharpened. Looking to replace those binned products? Avoid filling your makeup bag with spur-of-the-moment, barely-used products by heading to a counter for some expert advice on the products that best suit your lifestyle and skin tone. We recommend heading to Bobbi Brown, Clinique, or Elizabeth Arden.
Less is more
Just like your wardrobe, the less you have, the easier it is to manage. It’s amazing how much you can re-energise your look just by editing down. So rather than floundering over more lipsticks than you could use in a lifetime, throw out anything that has cracked, altered colour, separated or dried out. Make sure each item matches your current skin tone; don’t save it for when you are really brown/pale. Ditch anything frosted or neon – how often do you really wear flouro shades - and keep to the classics in neutrals browns or natural pinks.
Retain a good store of classic black and brown liners/mascaras, which are always great for day and evening. If you are still feeling a little overwhelmed, get a professional to help. Chantecaille offers an excellent free service at its Harrods and Fenwick counters which will help you to consolidate your makeup bag and make the most of multi-taskers such as the lip, blush or bronzing Aqua Brush, £35 (www.chantecaille.com).
Prepare the battle ground
As Bobbi Brown says in her new Makeup Manual: “Weekly maintenance is far easier than semi-annual overhauls”, so get organised today. On your dressing table, sort brushes, liners and mascaras into separate caddies; Japonesque’s is perfect, £9.90 (www.hqhair.com), but a collection of vintage vases work just as well. Foundations or creams that have lost their lids should be decanted into fresh bottles - try Muji’s acrylic pots, £1.50 (www.muji.eu). You can even downsize your favourite cosmetics into easy-to-use palettes. Bobbi Brown has great Eye and Blush palettes, which you can fill with all your favourites, from £10 (www.bobbibrown). Alternatively, Aveda’s Essentials Environmental Compact allows you to swap your favourite eye and lip colour and foundation for day or evening. £10 (www.aveda.co.uk)
Brush up on your vocab
If you can’t sort your parabens from your phthalates then now is the time to brush up on your potentially harmful toxins. The average woman can apply 175 different chemicals to her face, just by following her normal skincare regime, and many have been linked to hormone changes and skin irritation. So read the small print. Shabir Daya, pharmacist and co-founder of Victoria Health, which specialises in natural and organic products, says there are a number of compounds to watch out for – so repeat after me. Phenyl mercuric acetate, commonly found in eye makeup; formaldehyde, scarily found in nail varnishes; petroleum often lurking in lipsticks; propylene glycol skulking around skin and hair products and those pesky parabens,
Tried & Tested: NUDE MAKEUP (13.03.09)
The beauty counters are packed with makeup in nude, understated shades, but which ones should be making their way onto our dressing tables? We’ve put six of the best to the test…
BENEFIT MOONBEAM, £15.50 (www.benefitcosmetics.co.uk)
What they say: This natural golden liquid highlights your complexion with moonlight radiance when applied to cheekbones.
The Results: I love the fun glass packaging - it instantly brightened up my makeup bag. The liquid is applied with a small brush and is the perfect consistency for blending into skin. It takes a bit of practice to get used to, as you need to rub it in immediately after you’ve applied it or it tends to stain your cheek. The brush application is great because none of the product is wasted. I have quite pale skin and didn’t think this would suit me, but it looked great and was really versatile - I used it on my cheeks, my eyelids and even put a small dab on my lips with Vaseline to get a subtle shiny gloss.
Best for: Mess-free application
MAC CREMESHEEN SHY GIRL LIPSTICK, £12.72 (www.maccosmetics.co.uk)
What they say: The cremesheen range is creamy, quixotic colour and gives a hard-line, super-sexy shine.
The Results: The packaging of this product alone would be enough to persuade me to buy it - small, black and bullet-shaped, it’s the perfect size for any purse. The lipstick has a lovely smooth texture and gives lips a subtle colour. I often find lipsticks quite drying, but my pout felt incredibly soft and utterly kissable after applying this! The flattering nude colour lasted all morning - despite eating and drinking, I only had to reapply once all day. I loved the look and will definitely recommend this to friends. Beware pressing too hard, though - after a month of usage, the top of my lipstick has snapped from the base.
Best for: Conditioning
BOBBI BROWN LONG WEAR CREAM SHADOW IN SUEDE, £15.66 (www.bobbibrown.co.uk)
What they say: This unique and innovative longwearing cream shadow maintains its true colour without creasing. The soft blending formula goes on comfortably and has a velvety finish.
The Results: This small pot of beige-coloured crème initially struck me as a tad boring and I worried that it would make my face look dull – how wrong I was! After layering the ultra-creamy texture onto my eyelids, my eyes instantly appeared wider and brighter. I only used a small dab on each eye, because it spreads easily, and using just a fingertip seemed to work better than applying it with a brush. The crème consistency means it doesn’t leave a frustrating line in the crease of your lids and it stayed bright for the whole evening. You could add more to make the look more dramatic, but I found that it’s best to start with a small amount and then apply more if needed.
Best for: Brightening
CLINIQUE UPLIGHTING LIQUID ILLUMINATOR, £22 (www.clinique.co.uk)
What they say: A sheer lightweight liquid that instantly illuminates skin. Highlights and contours cheeks, brow bones or all over face
The Results: This sleek, pump-action tube is easy to throw into your makeup bag. It has a much runnier consistency than other illuminators, which I thought could be quite messy, but it easily blended into my cheeks and gave me a brilliant high-shine look with just one pump! You don’t need more than one ‘pump’ for each cheekbone and it feels lightweight and has great lasting power - I didn’t need to reapply once. The natural tones kept my face looking bright and healthy all day. The super-light shade would suit any skin-tone, because the shimmer stands out without making you look overly-bronzed.
Best for: An understated look
GIVENCHY SHADOWSHOW 08 MUST-HAVE BEIGE, £15.67 (01932 223824)
What they say: this fine powder eyeshadow has been designed to assure good makeup hold with no risk of caking in the crease of the eyelid to create a strong and intense look.
The Results: this was the perfect colour for my dark skin, but would look equally good on paler complexions. The packaging looks luxurious and the shadow itself is a refined texture that easily glides onto skin with the handy, gentle applicator. It was a pleasure to apply - it felt smooth and gentle on my skin and instantly made me feel glamorous. I loved the way you could build up the intensity of the colour; have a barely there sweep of powder, or apply three layers to create an intense impact that contrasts with black mascara. It stayed put all night and didn’t leave a crease in my socket-line.
Best for: A luxurious treat
JEMMA KIDD HI-SHINE SILK TOUCH LIPGLOSS IN PETAL, £15.99 (0208 740 2085)
What they say: Non-sticky formula with anti-oxidant Vitamin E, gives a subtle sexy sheen and pout. Use on its own, over lipstick for extra shine or with a lip liner to fill out the lips.
The Results: I’m a big lipgloss fan and was hoping this product would live up to all my usual favourites. I loved the packaging - the contrasting black and pink gave it a very young and fresh feel. The applicator wand picks up the perfect amount needed to coat lips. The gloss itself is a thick consistency and instantly gave my lips a sheer shine that lasted all evening, without feeling at all sticky. The best bit, however, was the way it made my pout look instantly fuller and pumper. The addition of Vitamin E left my lips feeling gorgeously soft and moisturised.
Best for: Instant transformation
Spa Review: LOOKFANTASTIC HAIR & BEAUTY SALON, NOTTING HILL (13.03.09)
Visited by Louise Emma Clarke
Location: Lookfantastic Luxury Hair & Beauty, 102 Westbourne Grove, Notting Hill, London W2 5RU. 0207 2436047. http://salons.lookfantastic.com
Facilities: If you’ve shopped online at Lookfantastic.com and felt a rush of excitement as the tissue-wrapped package dropped onto the doormat, it might be time to treat yourself to a little ‘me time’ at one of the brand’s luxury hair and beauty destinations. The company boasts 15 salons, spanning Sussex, Kent and London. The flagship salon is based in Notting Hill, London, and could easily be mistaken for a luxury beauty boutique from the outside, with a window packed to the brim with bright bottles and tempting packages from the likes of Kerastase, Redken, and Dermalogica. Set over two floors, the buzzing hair salon is based upstairs, while individual treatment rooms are based downstairs for a more tranquil experience. The pampering menu isn’t extensive, with the focus on quality rather than quantity. Visitors seeking some relaxation can choose from three facials, four body treatments, and a luxury manicure and luxury pedicure. For those seeking maintenance, the salon offers an eyelash and eyebrow tints and a full range of waxing services.
Ambience: It might look like a luxury boutique from the street, but step through the doors and there’s no mistaking that you’ve arrived at a busy hair salon. The vibe is buzzing, chatty, and very laid back. You’ll be rubbing shoulders with ladies who lunch, arty students, business men on their lunch breaks, and tourists treating themselves to an hour of pampering. Step downstairs into one of the individual treatment rooms, however, and you’ll instantly feel your shoulders ease and mind relax.
Treatment Tested: Cut and Style Dry, from £50
The appointment started with a long chat with my stylist about what style I was looking for – I chose to keep my current length, with the addition of layers and a sweeping fringe. I was then treated to an unexpected, but very welcome, shoulder and head massage… My only criticism comes at this point – the stylist had just been for a cigarette and her fingers smelt strongly as she massaged my scalp, which did slightly taint the fragrance of the essential oil! I was then lead to the basin area and ushered into a large leather massage chair. My hair was washed, conditioned, and treated, while I enjoyed a sleep-inducing back massage. Arriving back at the mirrors, my hair was chopped into my desired style and styled into perfect curls.
Luxury Pedicure, £45 for 60 mins
I was lead downstairs and invited into one of the individual treatment rooms for my luxury pedicure. I hopped onto the white-towelled bed and lowered my feet into a blissfully-warm footbath to soak. The therapist scrubbed my feet to slough off any rough skin, then treated each foot and lower-leg to an ultra-relaxing massage. My nails were then trimmed and tidied, before being painted with my choice of neon-pink polish. I was able to relax in the room with a magazine for the next 10 minutes to allow them to fully dry – this part was crucial, as I’ve been known to ruin pedicures in the past, by rushing my feet back into my sheepskin boots far too quickly!
Breaking News: BOBBI BROWN LAUNCHES BOBBI BRIGHTS PALETTE (13.03.09)

Blog: SKINCARE GURU LIZ EARLE SHOWS US HOW TO GET OUR SKIN READY FOR SPRING BY TURNING OUR BATHROOM INTO A LUXURY SPA (13.03.09)
With spring around the corner, this is the perfect time of year to detox and recharge. I have been taking extra care of myself recently by indulging in a little at home pampering, which is such a simple and hassle-free way to relax your body and revive your spirits - without having to leave the cosy comfort of your own home! Having a quiet night in gives you the perfect opportunity for top-to-toe pampering. You don’t have to spend a fortune to feel fabulous, so why not make the most of those products that are already sitting in the bathroom cabinet? My simple tips for at home pampering will make your body feel spa-perfect - without the price tag.
Body brushing is one of my favourite tips for radiant skin and improved health. It’s an easy and inexpensive way of keeping the skin smooth - especially on lumpy, bumpy areas such as upper arms, hips and thighs. Before bathing, use a long-handled, natural bristled brush to literally brush the skin from top to toe (working upwards from the soles of the feet), concentrating on hips and thighs to help shift cellulite. Given a daily boost of body brushing, our skin sheds waste and toxins more easily, while our body benefits from a boost to the circulation and lymphatic system, improving skin tone, smoothness and even helping our immune system. Something as simple as cleansing can be a luxury pampering experience. Take your time to massage Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser, from £12.50, into your face, neck and décolletage, breathing in the invigorating aroma of natural eucalyptus. Rinse the pure muslin cloth in hand-hot water and wring out before gently polishing off the cream, revealing super-clean, super-soft skin.
Add a few drops of your favourite essential oil blend to your bath, to soothe your senses and shift your mood. I am always experimenting with essential oils and my favourites are patchouli and neroli. Comfort Vital Oil for the Bath, £8.50, is the perfect choice with its soothing essential oils of cedarwood and vetiver.
Before you get into the bath, smooth an intensive nourishing face-mask such as Intensive Nourishing Treatment, from £4.50 over your face and backs of hands - perfect to leave on for that long soak in the bath to soften and soothe. Lie back and relax, breathing deeply in through your nose and out through your mouth and let the mask get to work restoring and replenishing your skin.
Once you are in the bath, apply a body scrub all over using circular movements to gently slough away dead skin cells and reveal smooth and radiant skin.
One of my all-time favourite multi-purpose beauty products is our Superbalm, from £4.25. It really does work to hydrate and restore all areas of dry skin – after bathing, rub this pure plant oil blend into your nails for a super nourishing treatment for your cuticles. This can also be used in your hair to smooth away frizz and on your lips to keep them soft.
Making a little ‘me’ time at the end of each day to massage in your favourite facial oil or moisturise your body doesn’t cost the earth and can make all the difference to both your skin and your psyche.

The Feature: GET READY FOR SPRING (06.06.09)
From embracing the hottest colour of the season - to rediscovering the joys of the perfect fake tan. We've identified the six golden beauty rules for Spring 2009…
REDISCOVER FAKE TAN
If you used fake tan as a teenager and were put off for life (streaks and splodges, anyone?), now is the time to rediscover how great a sun-kissed glow can make you feel. Self-tanners have come on in leaps and bounds in recent years, with ever more innovative products hitting the shelves. This year is no disappointment, which is lucky considering few of us can afford that annual trip to the sun… The first product on our radar is the clever new Piz Buin Self Tanning Lotion with Colour Dial, £17.99 (Boots Nationwide). The bottle has two chambers, which allows you to select the perfect shade for your skin tone. Simply set the dial to the shade you want to tan – from the subtlest glow (number one) to the darkest bronze (number five). As you get more confident, you can get darker and darker. The best bit, however, is the summer scent – gone are the days of waking up smelling like rich tea biscuits. If you’re short of time, why wait for a tan to develop? Treat yourself to a bottle of recently launched Fake Bake Faux Glo Instant Tan, £10.99 (www.fakebake.co.uk) and you’ll be rewarded with a natural-looking glow in a matter of seconds. If standing in the bath clutching a spray can sounds a little daunting, you can rest easy thanks to the innovative new nozzle. The 360° nozzle makes applying an even coverage a doddle – even when the can is held upside down.
MASTER THE DIY PEDICURE
Less-than-perfect toes in a pair of spring flats are not attractive, but we bet our bottom dollar that your feet are in need of a good pedicure after months hiding in sheepskin boots. Save pennies by learning how to carry out the perfect home treat for your feet. Start by bathing your soles in a bowl of warm water infused with an indulgent foot soak, such as Origins Rest Soothing Foot Soak, £16.64 (www.origins.co.uk). After 10 minutes, remove your feet and dry thoroughly, before sloughing off dead skin with a foot file. We wholeheartedly recommend the Ped Egg, £9.78 (www.jmldirect.com) - an egg-shaped foot tool, which is precision engineered with 135 stainless steel micro files to gently remove calluses and dead skin. Next, slather a rich foot cream onto your newly-softened soles – try The Body Shop’s Peppermint Intensive Foot Rescue, £8.80 (www.thebodyshop.co.uk), which is infused with grape acids to maximize exfoliation. Invest in a good pedicure kit to file nails, lift cuticles and remove any awkward hangnails – we recommend Ms. Pedicure Tip-Toe Toes, £6.99 (Boots Nationwide). When filing your nails, make sure you file across the nail to avoid in-grown toe-nails. There are two rules for painting nails this season – they should either be bright or lilac. You can’t go far wrong with Leighton Denny’s new spring collection, which features two lilac-hued shades – (Whatever and Made to Measure), a vivid coral (Perfect to Party) and a colour-popping fuchsia (So La), £9.79 each (www.leightondenny.co.uk). Finish your DIY pedicure with a good top-coat, such as the high-gloss OPI Top Coat, £9.50 (www.beautyexpert.co.uk). Want to know the secret to keeping your pedicure looking fresh? Reapply a layer of topcoat to your nails two days after you first apply – the colour will last and last.
RETURN TO SHAVING
While waxing, creams, and lasers have grown in popularity over recent years, shaving has sat quietly in the shadows. This year, however, will see the humble razor finally thrown back in the spotlight – spurred on by a handful of great new launches, a lack of available funds to visit expensive salons, and our lack of patience to sit around and wait for creams to do their job. There’s no shortage of razors arriving on the market over the coming months. King of Shaves is shortly launching its first razor for women; The Azure – the first British made, engineered and designed razor for more than 100 years. Gillette will be launching the Venus Embrace – a razor that boasts no fewer than five blades. And Bic will be relaunching its Bic Clic Soleil, with a reduced retail price to attract shoppers on a budget. To ensure you have the smoothest shave, it’s worth using a good quality shaving gel. King of Shaves have just relaunched its womens’ shaving gels, with three in the range – Pamper & Moisturise, Energise & Refresh, and Smooth & Sensitive, £3.99 each (0800 0838416). The ingredients couldn’t be more feminine, including rose, lime, and white lily – and neither could the packaging, scattered in floral etchings (there’s no chance your other half will mistake this for his own in the shower). Legs feel unbelievably silky after use
EMBRACE LILAC
Love it or hate it – lilac is one of the biggest trends for Spring/Summer ‘09 and it’ll bring your look bang up to date. To emulate the lilac-framed eyes on the Aquascutum catwalk, you need to invest in two colours – a darker lilac shadow for the base and a metallic powder or cream to sweep on top. Start by applying the matte powder to your entire eyelid – we recommend using the darker heather-hued shade from Chanel’s Soft Eyeshadow Duo in Orient-Express, £23.49 (Chanel Counters Nationwide). Follow with a metallic shade – applying with an eyeliner brush (slightly damp, if you are using powder). Try NARS Cosmetics Cream Eyeshadow in Penelope, £15 (www.narscosmetics.co.uk). Sweep the shadow across your upper lash line, starting from the inner corner of your eye and finishing at the outside corner (don’t be tempted to end in a flick, as this looks works best when kept subtle). Finally, finish the look repeating this sweep under the lower lash line. Inspired by the lilac pouts at Modernist? If you’d prefer to focus on your lips, we’d recommend that you choose a sheer lipstick with a touch of shimmer – rather than a matte shade, that could make your lips appear a little futuristic. Our favourite is M.A.C Cosmetics Lavender Whip, £11.26 (www.maccosmetics.co.uk). It has a smooth creamy texture that moisturises and gently tints lips with long-lasting wash of lilac.
RETIRE YOUR HAIR STRAIGHTENERS
You can safely store your hair straighteners up in the loft for Spring/Summer ‘09 – this is not the season for poker-straight locks. The catwalks were awash with laid-back and ultra-feminine curls, kinks and waves. If you are blessed with wavy locks, you need to invest in products to smooth and define your curls. We love Tigi’s S Factor One Curl At A Time Serum, £13.30 (www.tigihaircare.com), which eliminates frizz and gives curls a shiny, healthy finish. Simply apply the serum to damp curly hair and leave to dry naturally. Adding curls to straight hair doesn’t necessarily mean hours sat at a dressing table with curling irons. Cheat your way to perfect waves by part-drying hair with a hair dryer, then tying it back into a loose plait from the nape of your neck. When the hair is dry, release the plait and locks will boast an impressive curl. Alternatively, replace your hair straighteners with the newly launched Remington Spin Curl Dryer, £39.14 (www.boots.com), which curls hair as you dry to create a natural-looking tousled look.
LIGHTEN YOUR BASE
When it comes to your base, less is definitely more. The ‘no-makeup’ look has been big news on the catwalk in recent seasons - skin looks flawless, but totally natural. Few of us, however, are blessed with the kind of skin that can go ‘au natural’ – so beauty brands are creating ever-more natural-looking foundations to give us a helping hand. The mineral trend has gathered speed over recent months, with ever more brands releasing products onto their shelves. One word of warning, though – always check the ingredients, as the word ‘mineral’ on the packaging by no means guarantees that the product is 100% pure. We recommend the original (and in our opinion, still the best) - BareMinerals SPF15 Foundation, £17.50 (0870 8506655). The loose powder gives great coverage, without being heavy or cloying. It looks like you’re not wearing makeup – and it’s so pure, you could even sleep in it. If you’re keen to use a liquid foundation, why not treat yourself to Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation SPF15, £26 (www.bobbibrown.co.uk). The feather-weight formula leaves skin looking natural and feeling completely weightless. The secret is in the formulation – a unique blend of pigments, emollients, and light-reflective optics to smooth and hydrate the skin, while instantly minimising the look of pores and concealing imperfections. Better still, the foundation is incredibly long-wearing, giving up to eight hours of perfect coverage.

Treatment Review: Methode Jeanne Piaubert Slimming Treatment (06.03.09)
What it promises: Methode Jeanne Piaubert offer some of the most effective slimming products on the market. The brand’s Speed Dieting Slimming Cream is an International bestseller, containing the highest levels of caffeine of any topical slimming product on the market. The Slimming Treatment is exclusive to Harrods Urban Retreat – a procedure that promises to reduce fatty deposits, shift stubborn cellulite and encourage circulation and toxin elimination through lymphatic drainage, massage and electro-stimulation.
What happens: After making my way to the Urban Retreat, on the fifth floor of Harrods, I was lead into the treatment room and invited to climb up onto the fluffy-towelled bed. The therapist began by applying a thermal draining tonic to my upper arms, thighs and waist (the areas of the body that naturally accumulate higher levels of fluid retention). This was followed by a vigorous massage using the gym toner - a tool that improves circulation and stimulates blood flow to encourage deeper absorption of the tonic. The Crème Minceur slimming cream was then applied and the areas were massaged vigorously using a combination of manual massage techniques and the Electra 2000 electrode. The current generated by the electrode breaks down the fatty deposits in the skin. The treatment was concluded with a lymphatic drainage massage to the front of the body to encourage toxin elimination and firm the skin.
Results: When I first was told that a current would be used during the procedure, I was a little nervous that I would be spending the next 1.5 hours attached to an electric shock machine, but I couldn’t have been more wrong! The beauty of the Jeanne Piaubert treatment is that it is wonderfully relaxing. At no point did I feel discomfort - in fact, I found myself drifting off into a wonderfully relaxed state. Kirsty, the therapist, applied just the right amount of pressure during the massage so that I could feel my body responding to the treatment, but not enough to feel any form of pain. After the treatment, my stomach was definitely flatter and over the next few days I noticed my skin tone improve. I felt as though I was free of nasty toxins. After two sessions, the cellulite on my thighs has really improved and I am absolutely thrilled! Who needs the gym?!
Price: From £110, for 1 hour 30 minutes
Location: The Urban Retreat, 5th Floor, Harrods, Knightsbridge, SW1X
TRIED & TESTED: DEPUFFING EYE CREAMS (06.03.09)
Whether it’s caused by working hard or partying hard, there’s nothing worse than waking up with huge, puffy eyes. We’ve put six products to the test that promise to (bring the) instantly reduce the puffiness.
COWSHED JASMINE TONING EYE BALM, £25 for 15ml (www.cowshedonline.com).
What they say: Jasmine Toning Eye Balm is specifically designed to nourish and uplift the delicate skin around the eyes. Made with jasmine essential oil to soothe and corkbark to make the skin look firmer and reduce the appearance of fine lines.
The Results: I love this cream – it’s thick, rich and felt very soothing as I was applying it. The fragrance of essential oils reminded me of expensive spa treatments. It didn’t sink in instantly, but left a lovely dewy glow underneath my eyes. My skin definitely felt tighter and, on closer inspection, seemed taut and less puffy. I wouldn’t recommend this for sensitive skins, as the cream is packed with jasmine essential oil, but it has made a big difference for me.
Best for: Tightening skin.
CHANEL PRÉCISION ENERGISING MULTI-PROTECTION EYE GEL, £35 for 15ml (0207 4933836).
What they say: Puffiness and dark circles are visibly faded. The eye area feels soft and refreshed, with a visibly lifted appearance. Natural extracts of horse chestnut, butcher's broom and ivy to stimulate the microcirculation. Vegetable proteins for a lifting effect. Soothing extracts of peach, cornflower and calendula.
The Results: This is certainly the luxury choice. The packaging looks very stylish and I loved the pearlescent-pink velvety cream. The pump bottle makes it very easy to control the amount you apply, so there’s no wastage. It’s very thin in texture and feels cooling when you apply it – the perfect way to soothe tired, puffy eyes. There’s no shimmer on the skin, but it cleverly reflects the light to disguise puffiness, lines and wrinkles.
Best for: Smoothing lines and wrinkles
DR. LEWINN’S ULTRA R4 EYE REPAIR CREAM, £40 for 15g (www.drlewinns.co.uk)
What they say: Experience peptide power in the revolutionary Ultra R4 Eye Repair Cream. This cream will minimise the appearance of puffiness and bags under the eyes, whilst firming and smoothing the eye area.
The Results: I don’t suffer from excessive puffiness, but always wake up to slight swelling under my lower lashes. The thick, peach-coloured cream looked very rich and indulgent, but it didn’t feel at all heavy on my skin. The puffiness seemed to disappear as I smoothed the cream under my eyes. Better still, my skin felt hydrated and ultra-soft. It isn’t cheap, but I know it’s working to halt the ageing process, so worth the investment.
Best for: Intense hydration
URBAN RETREAT THE EYE CREAM, £11.74 for 15ml (www.beautique.com).
What they say: A soothing and moisturising eye cream that reduces puffiness and reduces dark circles. Containing Rosehip oil, Aloe Vera, Cucumber, Chamomile and Eye Bright extract the light cream brightens and hydrates and leaves a protective shield around the fragile eye area.
The Results: I was really impressed with how cooling and soothing this lightweight, rose-scented lotion felt on application – the perfect fix for my sore, tired, early-morning eyes. I didn’t notice an instant reduction in puffiness, but the cooling sensation seemed to last and last – and gradually the swelling was reduced. It absorbed very quickly into the skin and left it feeling silky smooth and hydrated.
Best for: Soothing eyes
DERMALOGICA TOTAL EYE CARE WITH SPF15, £30.75 for 15ml (www.dermalogica.co.uk)
What they say: A technologically-advanced eye treatment cream that smoothes and retexturises with gentle alpha hydroxy acids and plant extracts, helping to reduce the appearance of puffiness and fine lines.
The Results: The tube contains a thick paste-like cream, with a beige colouring. As you smooth it under your eyes, it lightens and becomes quite sheer. My whole under-eye area appeared brighter and smoother – I was genuinely impressed. The dark circles that seem to be permanent fixtures under my eyes were disguised – I hardly even needed concealer. A little’s goes a long way so this tube will last and last.
Best for: Hiding dark circles
CAUDALIE VINEXPERT ANTI-AGEING SERUM FOR EYES AND LIPS, £30 for 15ml (www.spacenk.co.uk)
What they say: This quick acting serum visibly firms eyelids and eye/lip contours. It diminishes the appearance of chronic puffiness, wrinkles, and dark circles.
The Results: This lightweight lotion has an opaque brown tint, but became clear as I smoothed it under my eyes. I loved the feeling on my skin – it felt soothing and totally hydrating. It didn’t absorb instantly, but seemed to brighten the under-eye area and give it a lovely glow. The first time I used it, there was no instant reduction in puffiness, but I’ve been using it twice daily for a month now and am starting to notice long-term results. My eyes seem tighter and less prone to early-morning swelling.
Best for: Long-term results
