Editor’s Letter (26.03.10)
I was sent a gift pack in the post last week. On first inspection, it looked rather sweet. Clearly aimed towards small children, it contained a bottle with a teddy bear head and a matching rattle toy alongside. ‘How cute” I thought, “I’ll save that for my next friend who pops out a baby.” But something didn’t seem right, so minutes later, I returned to it. What exactly was in that bottle? Some detective work – which involved digging out the press release, as there was suspiciously no label – revealed that it was perfume. Yep, you’re hearing me right - fragrance for babies and children. Seemed a little strange to me. But then again, I’m not a mother, so I decided to text a friend who has four sweet-smelling things under the age of five. Her reply arrived within seconds and confirmed my fears: “It’s weird! Children should smell of nothing but baby powder and play doh!” On Twitter, I received a stream of horrified responses, including: “Very weird... like baby high heels. Not right” and “No, no and no again to perfume for children!” Whatever will they think of next? Nappies scented with Chanel No.5?

Leighton Denny. Forget chocolate – I will be a very happy bunny if I wake up to discover these bright, cheerful nail polish shades waiting for me on Easter morning (£11 each). Leighton Denny is one of my favourite nailcare brands, with trend-driven, glossy colours that seem to last and last. These two new colours are from the Spring/Summer 2010 collection – The Heiress (a pale violet) and Notorious (a stunning jade). There’s no easier wake to shake off the long, grey winter and bring your look bang up to date for spring. www.leightondennyexpertnails.co.uk

Bourjois. Purple eye makeup is a huge trend for Spring/Summer – and this week, I have been rocking the look with Bourjois’ stunning eyeshadow in Violet Absolu (£5.99). The colour – a vibrant purple, with slight shimmer – can be worn all over the eyelid for a dramatic look, but I prefer to sweep a soft line across my top lash line with the edge of the applicator. The great thing about purple is that it is flattering to every skin tone – and looks equally good when worn with a casual, everyday look, as it looks when you dress it up for an evening out or a wedding. Try it when you are wearing navy – it’s very, very pretty. 0800 269 836

L’Occitane. L’Occitane has launched a limited edition fragrance for Spring/Summer 2010 – Wild Cherry Tree Eau de Toilette (£27) – and it boosts spirits within seconds. The sparkling fragrance starts with fun, zingy notes of blackcurrant and citron, then settles on skin with feminine, romantic notes of cherry blossom and rose, and finishes with delicate traces of cedar, sandalwood, and musk. If that isn’t enough, the packaging is ultra-pretty – and will be taking pride of place on my dressing table for the months ahead. Get your hands on it while you can. http://uk.loccitane.com

Gillette. I’ve always been a fan of Gillette razors – I’m yet to find another brand that leaves my legs feeling as smooth – so when I heard that the latest launch had hit shelves, I was keen to get my mitts on it. Venus Spa Breeze (from £7.99) features flexible built-in shave gel bars that respond to the curves of our legs to deliver a close, smooth shave. As the razor glides across skin, the gel bars create a light lather that means you don’t need shaving gel – although the longer you use it, the lather gets less and less effective, so don’t throw away that shaving gel just yet. It’s quick, easy and effective - and I’d highly recommend it. www.gillettevenus.com/uk

No.7. I’m eternally on the hunt for the perfect volumising mascara – and one of my latest discoveries is well worth a mention. Boots No7 Intense Volume Mascara (£10.50) arrived on my desk last week and I am very impressed. It dramatically lengthened and volumised my lashes, but there wasn’t a hint of a clump (the usual problem when mascaras try to “boost”, as they pile on the product onto lashes to add volume). Instead, my lashes looked like I’d already used a lash comb on them – perfectly individual, yet with the appearance of at least double what I usually possess. I’ve ditched my regular mascara and will be using this from now on. Boots Nationwide.

Breaking News: CLINIQUE LAUNCH ANTI-BLEMISH SOLUTIONS LIQUID MAKEUP (26.03.10)
Suffer from problem skin? Trying to cover it with makeup can become a vicious circle – too much can make the condition worse, but too little won’t disguise the blemishes. Problem skin isn’t just a teenage concern either – in fact, in a recent survey among 500 women, blemishes were revealed to be the number one skin concern. Clinique has listened – and this month, the brand has launched a fabulous new liquid makeup to treat blemishes, yet leave behind a beautiful, natural finish.
Thanks to a clever blend of ingredients that help minimise sebum without affecting the skin’s moisture balance, skin feels balanced and comfortable throughout the day. The foundation camouflages blemishes, neutralises visible skin redness, and helps to conceal the appearance of pores. Lightweight and cooling on application, the product blends easily onto skin and has impressive staying power, keeping skin looking fresh and flawless for up to eight hours.
The four hero ingredients are Salicylic Acid (working as an exfoliant to keep pores clear of cellular debris); Laminaria Sacharrina Extract (to regulate sebum production and balance the skin); Hydroxydecanoic Acid (helping to stop the spread of blemish-causing agents across the skin’s surface); and Caffeine (to minimise irritation and reduce skin redness).
Clinique Anti-Blemish Solutions Liquid Makeup will be on shelves from 1st April 2010, available in eight shades. It will retail at £20 for 30ml. Visit www.clinique.co.uk

Blog: RENÉ METCALFE – MAKEUP ARTIST FOR DANCING ON ICE – REVEALS HER LATEST BEAUTY OBSESSION (26.03.10)
I can't remember a time when I didn't love makeup. I’m often asked why I became a makeup artist. I have always loved colour, but then why not be a painter? Maybe I was inspired by the glamorous women in the movies from the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s that I watched on Saturday afternoons, when I had sneaked out of hockey or netball practice. Or maybe it was going to the Avon makeup parties with my Mum and watching everyone excitedly try all the latest lipsticks and eyeshadows.
I do remember avidly reading the beauty sections of J17 and then practising the look on my Mum and sister. I have lots of photographs of Mum wearing pink and blue eyeshadow right up to the brow - it was the eighties! I was always styling my Mum’s hair, so naturally when I finished school I went into a hairdressing apprenticeship, where I learnt the importance of product knowledge and fashion.
I soon realised that London was the place to go, so I packed my suitcase and went in search of glamour. Not only did I find glamour, I also found that makeup could be a form of art! I started out by assisting makeup artists; Val Garland, Sam Bryant and Petros who introduced me to a variety of different brands. Here I learnt which company had the best foundation and mascara, as well as being taught that makeup is a creative adventure!
I have been very lucky in my chosen career as a makeup artist, I've travelled to the Maldives with Miss World, worked backstage with A-list actors at the BAFTAS, and I designed the catwalk look for Donatella Versace for Fashion Rocks. I’ve also worked with some great stars, including Tara Palmer-Tomkinson, Harvey Keitel, Jerry Hall, Jeremy Irons, Claudia Schiffer, Alex Wek and Dustin Hoffman.
Whilst I was working on the Vodafone Live Music Awards I met Colin Laphan, CEO of ARTDECO in the UK. ARTDECO is Germany’s No.1 make-up brand, I'm always excited about trying new products and Colin gave me ARTDECO’s Mineral Foundation Powder. I was working with Tamzin Outhwaite at the time, so I lightly buffed the ARTDECO Mineral Foundation Powder onto her skin, it had a beautiful velvety texture and she looked instantly flawless - we were hooked!
Since then ARTDECO has become the biggest celebrity secret. Soon, I was being asked to bring ARTDECO products to every shoot. Discerning celebrities were noticing the quality of this brand.
When I was asked to design the makeup for Dancing On Ice, it was a dream job - glitz, glamour and avant-garde make-up all in one amazing show! ARTDECO was the perfect brand, the ranges high performance and long lasting makeup, ensured the celebrities looked their best at all times. On live television there is no chance for a retouch, no airbrushing and you are exposed to the harshest lighting in the worst kind of environment with minimal preparation time for an immovable appearance deadline. Not forgetting that everything is now filmed in high definition. ARTDECO was an instant a hit with the stars! I then won the Royal Television Society (RTS) Craft & Design Award for Dancing On Ice, it was a huge honour for myself and the ARTDECO team!
My beauty ‘must haves’ are ARTDECO’s Pure Minerals and Glamour collection; I absolutely adore both these ranges. Su-do has an amazing vegan tan that gives the most beautiful golden glow and the Sorbie Style Solution by Trevor Sorbie is the ultimate SOS treatment for coloured, dry and damaged hair!
Every morning I wake up and I love my job! I feel as excited about ARTDECO makeup, as I did all those years ago at my Mum’s makeup parties. It brings back all those fond memories, when we were never too busy to be beautiful!
René Metcalfe is ARTDECO’s Celebrity MakeUp Artist; her clients include Tara Palmer-Tomkinson, Suzanne Shaw, Jerry Hall, Melinda Messenger and Zoe Salmon. René has also styled this year’s celebrity contestants using ARTDECO make-up on Dancing On Ice.

Treatment Review: KERATIN COMPLEX SMOOTHING THERAPY, BY COPPOLA DESIGNER HAIR CARE (26.03.10)
What it promises: A new all natural treatment by Coppola that provides up to three months of curl-relaxing, frizz-relieving treatment for naturally curly and wavy hair. Pure keratin complex – the protein found naturally in the hair - is brushed onto the hair, then gentle heat applied to push it deep into the cuticle, eliminating up to 95% of frizz and leaving hair soft and shiny for up to 12 weeks. The treatment helps to cut down styling time and makes hair more humidity resistant.
What happens: After an initial consultation over a delicious coffee and biscuits, my stylist Gladys, sectioned off my dry hair and painted on the keratin complex in strict sections, up to the roots using a brush. Once it was all covered, a plastic cover was placed over my head and I was placed under a dryer to speed up the penetrative action of the conditioning keratin. Two glossy magazines and around an hour later I was ready to have my hair washed and the keratin residue removed. Gladys blow-dried my hair and then used hot irons to seal the ingredients, which helps guarantee long-lasting results.
Results: Once my hair was dried and straightened – the whole process took 2 ½ hours - I could feel the difference between this treatment and an ordinary blow dry. My hair felt a lot smoother, thicker and had a brilliant shine. There was none of the frizz that I normally get when I blow-dry my own hair and I only needed a burst of hairspray to finish off my new look. Six weeks later, although the roots are slowly beginning to grow through, my hair is still a lot smoother and easier to manage.
Price: £350 at Errol Douglas. Treatment prices start from £200, depending on the length, thickness and texture of your hair.
Location: Errol Douglas, 18 Motcomb Street, London SW1X 8LB. Tel 020 7 235 0110.

Tried & Tested: FIRMING BODY LOTION (26.03.10)
Get in shape for spring with a firming body lotion. We’ve tested six products that promise to tone up legs, arms, bums, and tums.

BAREFOOT BOTANICALS ROSA FINA HOURGLASS LIFTING AND FIRMING BODY LOTION, £25.95 (www.barefoot-botanicals.com)
What they say: A firming body lotion enriched with essential oils, revitalising vitamins and silica rich herbal extracts that help to keep skin firm and youthful.
The Results: I used this cream twice a day - and after four weeks, I was very impressed with the results. I concentrated mainly on my stomach and hip area – my main areas of concern after having two children – and the area is visibly smoother. I loved the silky, lightweight texture – and the cream had a delicious scent too. Another bonus was that it absorbed quickly into skin, so I could get dressed immediately after applying it. The only downside is that I didn’t notice my skin feeling any softer – so in future, I will use it in conjunction with my regular moisturiser.
Best for: New mums

JERGENS NATURALS SKIN FIRMING BODY MOISTURISER WITH POMEGRANATE, £4.99 (Boots Nationwide)
What they say: This product is made from 96% natural ingredients and promises to moisturise and firm cellulite-prone skin in just two uses.
The Results: I exercise regularly, but anything that will help tone my bottom and thighs is very welcome in my books! I used this thick cream every morning for four weeks. At bedtime, my skin still felt soft and hydrated, so I didn’t feel the need to reapply a second time – so it’s great for people who don’t have much time. After just three days, I had already noticed that my skin felt firmer. It was easy to apply, rubbed in really easily, and smelt amazing. After a few weeks, I noticed that my skin felt a lot softer to the touch, particularly on my arms. I would recommend it.
Best for: Convenience

PALMERS BUST FIRMING MASSAGE CREAM, £6.29 (Boots Nationwide)
What they say: Designed for flat-chested or big-busted women, this quick-drying formula contains collagen, elastin and vitamin E to improve the skins tone.
The Results: I used this cream for four weeks and applied it every couple of days. The sweet fragrance is lovely, but when first applied it gave my chest a strange, tingly feeling which was disconcerting at first. The sensation soon faded and left the area feeling soft and well-moisturised. Some moisturisers leave my skin with a greasy film, but this product was quickly-absorbed and I could get dressed after applying it. After weeks of application, there hasn’t been a noticeable change in the firmness of my bust, but it does feel very smooth and I would definitely recommend the cream for its moisturising powers.
Best for: Moisturising

CHAMPNEYS CHILL AND TONE ICE GEL, £15 (www.champneys.co.uk)
What they say: A high-performance gel which delivers a cocktail of smoothing ingredients with a skin-tingling sensation as it sets to work. This multi-tasking wonder product not only works on the skin’s surface to visibly improve skin tone but also stimulates the micro-circulation to help eliminate toxins.
The Results: I used this product for four weeks and I started to feel it working almost immediately. This gel gives quite a powerful tingling sensation after appliance. I thought that it might just be a ‘smoke screen’ so waited patiently to see the difference after a few uses. After application, the gel soaked into my skin and the tingles seemed to stay forever while I got dressed. At first I thought I might have to have a shower to wash it off again, but I persevered and am really happy with the results. The skin on my thighs is visibly firmer and smoother, although I still use a moisturiser to keep the skin supple and soft.
Best for: Problem areas

NIVEA RICH FIRMING MOISTURISER Q10 PLUS, FROM £6.25 (Boots Nationwide)
What they say: The new formula will offer an intensive hydration boost, alongside a firming action which will noticeably firm the skin tone within two weeks.
The Results: This cream is great. I used it every day as a body lotion and although I didn’t notice a huge difference in the firmness of my skin, it felt and looked far healthier and softer. I have very dry skin and I find some creams aimed at my skin type can be a bit heavy and greasy. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case with this product and I didn’t have to wait a long time before getting dressed. The bottle is a generous size and after two weeks of use, I still have plenty to keep me going. The lotion has a mild, inoffensive scent that is only noticeable as it comes out of the bottle. I would definitely use this again.
Best for: Value for money

ESTEE LAUDER BODY PERFORMANCE FIRMING BODY CRÈME, £29.50 (www.esteelauder.co.uk)
What they say: A skin-fortifying Bio-Peptide helps skin boost its natural collagen production, reinforcing skin's supportive network for a firmer look. Helps counteract lack of resilience and tone due to loss of collagen.
The Results: The instructions on the packaging advised me to use this cream twice daily and to focus on cellulite-prone areas such as the arms and stomach. I enjoyed using the product. The cream was thick and very luxurious – and left my skin feeling instantly smoother, without coating it in a greasy film. I’ve been using this product now for four weeks – and although I haven’t noticed a huge difference on my thighs and bottom, I did notice a big change on the areas where the skin is thinner, like the tops of my arms. I’m getting married in the summer and I will definitely continue to use this cream, so that my arms look nice and toned in my strapless dress.
Best for: Toning arms

Feature: PARLEZ VOUS BEAUTY? (26.03.10)
For just one week, we give you permission to forget the science behind your favourite beauty brands… Now is the time to perfect your linguistics.

ORIBE
Oribe, or Or-bay as his name is pronounced, is to hair what Lagerfeld is to fashion. Adored by A-listers including Jennifer Lopez, and renowned for giving an irreverent, modern, sexy twist to classic styles, the Cuban bad boy is instantly recognisable by his heavily tattooed forearms. He has been involved in styling some of the most iconic images of the past three decades, working with top fashion designers and photographers, notably a five-year collaboration with Steven Meisel.
For Oribe, there can never be enough volume - and his work with Gianni Versace captured the decadent world of the supermodels in their heyday. In 1992, he was called upon by the late John F. Kennedy Junior to create the cover image for the inaugural edition of his political magazine, George, featuring Cindy Crawford styled as George Washington. Later work has included making over Kate Moss as Marilyn Monroe for W magazine and advertising campaigns for the likes of Louis Vuitton.
In late 2007, Oribe launched a range of luxurious haircare products, combining the high-octane glamour of traditional hairdressing with modern technology and the finest ingredients, including French perfumes which have been specially commissioned to add incredible scent. The range has been described by Space NK founder, Nicky Kinnaird as “THE range we have all been waiting for... these are the products of the hair obsessed”. To recreate his signature, voluminous look, try Volumista, £28 for 175ml - a lightweight mist which adds both texture and hold to all hair types, without stiffness.

L’OCCITANE
L’Occitane, pronounced Lox-ee-tan, was created in 1976, in the heart of Provence and this heritage remains at the core of the brand. The company’s skincare and fragrance collections are inspired by natural ingredients, including almond, lavender, verbena and cherry blossom, with their bestselling Shea Butter Hand Cream attaining cult status, selling at a rate of one tube every ten seconds globally. Halle Berry, Kate Winslet and Sadie Frost are among the brand’s celebrity fans.
L’Occitane is well respected in the beauty industry for being socially responsible, using sustainable materials and fairtrade ingredients, with Braille labelling featuring on many of the brand’s products. The L’Occitane Foundation ensures that the company’s mission is carried out, supporting visually impaired people, preserving the natural environment and fighting for women’s rights globally.
This year sees the launch of L’Occitane’s first makeup line, based on the Peony flower. Available from May, the range (from £7) comprises delicately scented face powders, glosses in wearable shades – as well as a new fragrance, presented in seed packets with a picture of the flower that provided the inspiration.

ILLAMASQUA
When makeup brand Illamasqua launched onto the UK beauty scene in 2008, beauty addicts’ excitement was punctuated by confusion over the correct pronunciation of the name. In fact, it became a hot topic for beauty bloggers and a cause for debate across the internet. The correct pronunciation, confirmed by their public relations agency, is Illamaska.
Inspired by subcultures and aimed at both men and women, Illamasqua captures the essence of urban Britain. The products are professional quality and include a huge spectrum of richly pigmented shades, developed by a team of makeup artists including Alex Box, who has created looks for Vogue, Stella McCartney and Gareth Pugh to name a few. Imagery used by the brand is theatrical, lending an indulgent and experimental feel. Beth Ditto, Sienna Miller and Lily Allen are all fans of the brand.
Following the launch of its flagship counter in London’s Selfridges, Illamasqua has experienced a cult following and astonishing growth, leading to US beauty retailer Sephora making the decision to stock the brand after less than a year of the launch. The on-counter experience is as unique as the brand. Experienced makeup artists who have been trained in “mirrorside manner” head up the counters, so that each customer receives a personalised look and gains new makeup skills. Selected counters offer the opportunity to have the makeup lesson filmed, making it easy to recreate the look at home.

OLE HENRIKSEN
The signature range is named after Hollywood’s renowned facialist, Ole Henriksen. Originally from Denmark, the correct pronunciation is Ooh-la Henriksen. When Ole suffered from cystic acne whilst travelling, he sought treatment in Jakarta, Indonesia and became fascinated with the botanical remedies that helped to bring his complexion back to perfection. He studied for degrees in skincare and cosmetic chemistry in London before moving to the US.
Opening in 1975, his L.A. spa, OleHenriksen Face/Body, has been a prominent destination in beauty for the last three decades. It is located on the exclusive Sunset Boulevard and clients include Naomi Campbell, Renee Zellweger and Charlize Theron.
Over four years ago, Ole introduced his spa products into the retail market and they are now stocked in some of the world’s most prominent department stores, such as Harrods and Harvey Nichols in the UK, Henri Bendel in New York, and Lane Crawford in Hong Kong. With a “less is more” approach to skincare, Ole’s range is designed to provide simple and effective products for all skin types and concerns. Every product features active natural ingredients and is instantly recognisable by the bold, bright packaging. The bestselling African Red Tea range (from £10) epitomises everything that Ole Henriksen stands for, featuring potent antioxidants for anti-aging effects and products for face or body.

SHISEIDO
Often mispronounced as Shishiedo, Shiseido is the world’s oldest skincare brand and fourth largest cosmetics company. Originating in Japan in 1872, where it was the first Western style pharmacy, Shiseido has always been regarded as an innovative company that invests heavily in beauty research. In 1906, Shiseido made history with the introduction of a natural, skin-tone face powder, offering Japanese women an alternative to the heavy white face powder that tradition dictated.
Shiseido began researching “aromachology”, scientifically investigating the physical and psychological effects of scent on the mind and body, in 1984 and the range now comprises three scents; Relaxing, Energising and Zen. Uniquely, the Zen fragrance incorporates “Space Rose”. The rose variety, “Overnight Sensation” was sent on the Discovery Space Shuttle where the effects of micro-gravity intensified the scent.
This investment in research also extends to the design and packaging of the products – an area that the company places great importance upon. The son of the company’s founder, Shinzo Fukuhara, established Shiseido’s designed department in 1916, taking inspiration from European Art Nouveau styles that were unheard of in Japan.
Looking for an introduction to the brand? Try Accentuating Colour Sticks (£23.50), available in four shades. The multipurpose stick can be used as a blusher, bronzer and highlight to define facial contours.

CHANTECAILLE
Luxury brand, Chantecaille takes its name from the family name of its founders and is pronounced: chont-i-kai.
Originally trading as a fragrance house since 1997, with four signature scents of Jasmine, Frangipani, Wisteria and Tiare inspired by the founders’ travels, the brand now also boasts skincare and cosmetic ranges. The New York brand is a family business, with French matriarch, Sylvie Chantecaille heading up the Company and daughters, Olivia and Alex both involved as Creative Director and Director of Sales respectively.
Sylvie Chantecaille has been involved in the New York beauty industry since the 1970s, when she set up a small cosmetics company with Diane von Furstenberg. Catching the attention of the Estee Lauder Company, she was headhunted and launched the Prescriptives brand in 1979, which became known for its scientific emphasis. Chantecaille reflects Sylvie’s interest in nature and her holistic approach to beauty. Angelina Jolie is among the brand’s A-list fans.
The brand focuses upon a high concentration of natural botanicals within the products, for example, the Aromacologie skincare line contains between 83% and 99.9% botanical ingredients. Even the brand’s signature, ergonomic packaging has been carefully considered, with shades chosen that are believed to impart spiritual power - and the silver cases have been hand dipped like jewellery.
Chantecaille also give back to nature, with its exclusive Cause-metic collections raising awareness for environmental issues through ultra-desirable palettes embossed with natural designs. Their current offering, Les Dauphins Limited Edition Quad-Palette (£79), features on-trend neutral shades for eyes and cheeks and aims to raise awareness of the plight of dolphins.

Spa Review: THE CHELSEA DAY SPA, LONDON (19.03.10)
Location: The Chelsea Day Spa, 2nd floor, 69a King’s Road, London SW3 4NX. 020 7351 0911. www.thechelseadayspa.co.uk.
Facilities: Located in the heart of Chelsea, on London’s fashionable King’s Road, The Chelsea Day Spa should feature in every girl-about-town’s address book. Just a few minutes walk from Sloane Square station, the spa is located up a flight of stairs on the second floor, with an ultra-stylish waiting area featuring comfortable sofas, bowls of tempting fresh fruit, and stacks of the latest glossy magazines. The treatment rooms are equally inviting, with beds swathed in the softest, fluffiest towels, dimmed lights, and a soothing soundtrack that sends you into a deep state of relaxation as soon as you close your eyes. The treatment menu offers everything you would expect – and much, much more. Pick from manicures and pedicures, massages, waxing services, body treatments, physiotherapy, cosmetic treatments and a range of innovative facials, such as the celebrity-favourite O2 Intraceuticals Oxygen Facial.
Ambience: The Chelsea Day Spa is trendy and buzzing at the reception, but hugely tranquil as soon as you step into your private treatment room. The staff are incredibly warm and friendly – whether you are popping in for a quick waxing service or spending the entire day at the spa enjoying a series of treatments. Visit once and you will make a note in your diary to come back. It feels like a much more luxurious version of home – and for that reason, it draws you back time and time again.
Treatments Tested: Aromatherapy Chocolate Massage, £75 for 60 minutes. Is there any more heavenly a combination than oodles of silky, chocolate-scented oil and an indulgent hour-long massage? After testing this treatment, I can confirm that it’s as good as spa treatments can possibly get. The full-body massage worked on neck, back, arms, legs, hands and feet – with the therapist so skilled that at times I wondered whether she was using wooden massage rollers, when in fact it was only ever her fingers and hands. Enjoying the sweet scent of the chocolate oil was a huge bonus – it gave the massage a unique and irresistible edge. I would recommend it to everyone!
The Chelsea Girl Mini Manicure, £22 for 30 minutes. Whilst I was enjoying a cup of herbal tea outside the treatment room, attempting to wake up from my blissful massage, my therapist was changing the treatment room into a manicure station. After re-entering the room, I sat down at the table and relaxed while my nails were tidied, filed, buffed, and painted. I chose a bright pillar-box red – and had several comments in the days following the treatment on the lovely shape of the nails and the bright, cheerful colour. I’m impressed by the price of this treatment too – it’s a quick, affordable, and enjoyable way to instantly boost spirits.

Tried & Tested: FOOT CREAMS (19.03.10
Pull your feet out of those comfy winter boots and get them in tip-top condition for spring with our pick of luxury foot creams.

BOOTS GORGEOUS FEET DEEPLY INTENSIVE MOISTURISER, £4.99 for 150ml (www.boots.com)
What they say: Boots Gorgeous Feet deeply intensive moisturiser for soft, smooth, rich hydration that lasts 24hrs.
The Results: The packaging isn’t hugely exciting, but I was impressed with the size of the pot. As soon as I sniffed the cream, I was hooked – it has a sweet, summery scent that reminded me of holidays. It made me want to dig out my flip-flops and head to the seaside! The texture is thick and quite indulgent, but I liked the way it felt cooling and soothing as I applied it – it would be ideal on hot summer days. It took a while to absorb, feeling a little sticky for a few minutes, but afterwards my feet felt softer and smoother. The price is great too – I definitely think it’s worth the money.
Best for: Value for money

LISA HOFFMAN SPA BATH HAND & FOOT BUTTER, £27 for 50ml (Harvey Nichols Nationwide)
What they say: A thick, rich butter for intense dryness for hands and feet. Rough dry flaky heels and cuticles are deeply conditioned.
The Results: I was thrilled to be handed this product to test. The mint green packaging is both stylish and very innovative. To get the product, you simply push down the top and a large blob of the thick, creamy butter is delivered through a hole. It’s mess-free and really easy to apply. At first, the scent of the product is quite subtle, like baby powder – but as you massage it into feet, the perfume starts to develop. It’s a sophisticated and grown-up scent, with deep floral notes. I loved it and it made applying it a real pleasure. The pot is quite small, so I am alternating it with my usual, more affordable brand – and my feet have never felt softer!
Best for: The fragrance

ESTEE LAUDER MANICURE/PEDICURE TREATMENT, £17.50 for 200ml (www.esteelauder.co.uk)
What they say: Treat your hard-working hands and feet to this intensely hydrating creme. Pampers even the driest skin into kid-glove softness. Rich in concentrated emollients, paraffin and a special moisture retainer. Like a "paraffin dip" spa treatment, it smoothes skin as it eases away dryness and discomfort.
The Results: I’m a big fan of Estee Lauder and this was no disappointment. The cream has a lightweight texture, which felt lovely and cooling as I rubbed it into the soles of my feet. A little goes a long way, so the tube would last throughout the season. The scent is very delicate and would suit everybody – I even discovered my husband applying it to his hands! The best bit about this product is how amazingly soft it left my feet feeling. The skin is rough, dry and in desperate need of a pedicure – but just a little of this cream transformed it and made it feel baby-soft. I would highly recommend it.
Best for: Softening

L’OCCITANE SHEA BUTTER FOOT CREAM, £16.50 for 150ml (http://uk.loccitane.com)
What they say: A prescription for relief and well-being. Contains antiseptic A.O.C. lavender essential oil to purify, and anti-inflammatory arnica extract to help reduce redness and irritation. Refreshing mint cools feet. Enriched with 15% nourishing Shea Butter for exceptional comfort.
The Results: I have very dry feet on my feet and treat myself to monthly pedicures during the summer months to try and keep them looking pretty. During appointments, I try to maintain the smoothness with foot cream – but it needs to be quite intensive to do the job. I wasn’t sure about the scent of this product when I first tested it – the blend of lavender and mint was quite unusual and I wasn’t sure that it worked. After smoothing the thick cream into my feet, however, the overriding scent was mint – and that was lovely and refreshing. It absorbed almost instantly and transformed the hard, rough skin to velvety-softness. I was very impressed. Better still, the results lasted – I only needed to apply it a couple of times a week to maintain the softness.
Best for: Extra Dry Skin

THE BODY SHOP PEPPERMINT INTENSIVE FOOT RESCUE, £9 for 100ml (www.thebodyshop.co.uk)
What they say: First aid for feet! Now with grape acids to work even harder to soften hard skin, while you sleep. Provides an overnight moisture serge to target dry cracked heels so you can wake up to softer, smoother skin.
The Results: I like the idea of applying foot cream, but I’m a busy Mum-of-three and in reality, I would ever remember to do it every day. When I was handed this product to test, I was relieved to discover that I only needed to apply it twice a week, applying it at bedtime. I loved the fresh, minty scent, which would be the perfect antidote to hot, sweaty feet in the summer (I might try and encourage my husband to try it!) The texture is very thick – almost like butter – and it takes a while to massage it into feet. However, it sinks in quickly and leaves rough skin feeling dramatically softer. In the morning, the results were even better – I am very impressed. It’s a great price too and I’ve already been recommending it to friends!
Best for: Busy schedules

COWSHED SANDALWOOD INTENSIVE HAND AND FOOT TREATMENT, £35 for 200ml (www.cowshedonline.com)
What they say: Sandalwood Intensive Hand & Foot Treatment transforms dry hands and hard heels, leaving them soft and supple. Made with sandalwood essential oil, jojoba oil, and vitamin E to deeply hydrate the skin. Enriched with refreshing lemon essential oil to brighten and tone.
The Results: This product looks fantastic, with a stylish green box and heavy glass jar. My first impression was that it would make a lovely gift – I’d be thrilled to unwrap it. The scent isn’t what I was expecting – it’s unusual, with green, woody notes and would be equally appealing to both men and women. The texture of the cream is lightweight and fluffy, reminding me of a mousse. It felt cooling as I applied it and took a few minutes to fully sink into the skin – I didn’t mind that, as in the summer it would feel nice and refreshing. After a week of daily use, my feet are suddenly softer, smoother, and ready be shown off in flip-flops! Although this is a pricey product, I would definitely treat myself again.
Best for: The luxury buy

The Feature: GOOD HAIR DAY (19.03.10)
Spring is here, so it’s time to ditch the hat and invest in products that will make bad hair days a thing of the past. We’ve got the inside scoop on the newest formulations and most effective trouble-shooters in haircare.

DETOX
Spring-cleaning doesn’t just mean pulling the fridge out to see what lurks behind! It’s time to refresh your hair after all those months hiding your locks under a hat. Detox shampoos can be great for getting rid of chemical residues from environmental pollutants, removing a build-up of products from the party season and adding new life to your hair.
Fudge has a Detox Shampoo, £8.25 (www.beautybay.com), which purges product build up, pollution and oil thanks to natural lemon extract. It won’t strip your locks though: the hydrating hair drink complex with guarana leaves hair feeling fresh and well hydrated.
For a weekly deep-clean, try Bumble and bumble’s Sunday Shampoo, £15 (www.hqhair.com). It is a weekly detox treatment (that you can use on any day) to rid hair of product residue, hard water minerals and pollutants. Although it’s perfect for product junkies and infrequent washers, you can’t use it on colour-treated hair – but it’s ideal for use just prior to masques and colour/chemical treatments.
Daniel Galvin Junior Hangover Hair, £4.99 (www.cultbeauty.co.uk) is also designed to cleanse away impurities without stripping the hair of its natural oils. It’s superb for revamping hair ‘the morning after’ and ideal for people who live in polluted urban areas.

CONDITION
We’re leaving the cold winds and hot radiators of winter behind, but spring can have its own perils when it comes to the condition of your hair. Shifts in air moisture levels that are quite common during this season can make hair prone to frizz.
Take action with MoMo Moisturizing Conditioner by Davines, £12.95 (www.cultbeauty.co.uk). This pH 3.5 conditioner quenches the thirst of dehydrated hair creating a light, protective layer on each strand. It also boasts jojoba oil to strengthen, soften and add shine without weighing the hair down: perfect for combating the frizzies.
Jo Hansford Anti Frizz Conditioner, £16.50 (www.johansford.com) is a great way to tame troublesome tresses while protecting the hair from the elements and providing much needed nourishment. It smells gorgeous too, and you don’t need very much to give your hair a really good coating.
Goldwell is Germany’s biggest hair brand and their Dualsenses Colour Extra Rich 60 Sec Treatment, £7.50 (www.beautybay.com) is a good example of why. Perfect for girls on the go, this treatment is strong enough to really transform hair, but only needs one minute to work. Containing Instant Microfluid Technology to give results you can see and feel immediately – and enriched with the Brilliance System with Pomegranate Extract – it reconstructs hair and maintains colour and smoothness. So now there’s no excuse for a bad hair day...

SMOOTH
Let’s get scientific... The cuticle or the outermost layer of the hair is a hard, shingle-like layer of over-lapping cells. When your hair is dry, damaged or distressed, these layers will be in disarray – and won’t form a smooth surface that will reflect the light and in turn make your hair look shiny. So how can you smooth them down? By calling in the cavalry in the form of some hardworking masques to supplement your regular conditioner.
Philip Kingsley’s Elasticizer, £25 (www.philipkingsley.com) has become an iconic hair product, and rightly so. It’s guaranteed to give you sleek and smooth locks after only one application, thanks to a unique formula that delivers a moisture boost directly into the hair’s cuticle. The result? Spectacularly silky, supple, and bouncy hair. It really is a must-try.
Paul Labrecque Protein Mask, £25 (beautybay.com) works wonders when it comes to smoothing damaged, parched locks and dry ends. It’s an intensive conditioning mask, rich in silk proteins, egg and soy-milk extracts that hydrate brittle, overstressed hair, making it a great choice for colour treated or processed hair.
Or try Davines Love Curl Smoothing Conditioner, £12.95 (www.cultbeauty.co.uk). Apart from looking fabulous on your bathroom shelf with Davines minimalist, super-cool packaging, its creamy formula brings out the best in coarse and frizzy hair.
Last but not least is KMS California Moist Repair Restructuring Therapy, £11.75 (www.cupidandgrace.com): a super-rich, super-effective masque that not only smells gorgeous but nourishes and restores damaged, dry or brittle hair into the bargain.

BOOST
If your hair is feeling a bit lack-lustre and thin, it could really benefit from a selection of boosting and thickening products. After all, you can’t keep hiding your flat hair under a hat now that the warmer weather is here! So think big when it comes to your hair this summer – you’ll be right on-trend for some of the 80s styles around, too.
Worth it for the name alone is Sexy Hair Big Dense Thickening Spray, £10.95 (www.beautybay.com). You simply can’t tell there’s anything on your hair when blow-drying – it’s got a real ‘no-product’ feel to it. What it does do is create incredible thickness and volume while, thanks to its aloe vera leaf juice and lavender extract, smoothing the hair's cuticle. And who wouldn’t want a big bottle saying ‘sexy’ on their dressing table?
Bumble and bumble have an excellent thickening range designed to boost and revive lifeless locks and boost body. Their Thickening Conditioner, £17.50 (www.hqhair.com) has ultra-light silk fibres that separate strands to create a fuller look, while their Thickening Spray, £20 (www.hqhair.com) is perfect for blow-drying, setting, protecting from heat and adding volume, lift and control.
Also worth a look is Neil George’s range from Space NK. His Volumising Spray, £18 (www.spacenk.co.uk) is a paraben-free formula, infused with lime flower and orange blossom to soothe the hair and scalp. It's a very lightweight, non-sticky spray than can be sprayed directly on roots to give fine hair body and lift.

SHINE
Now that the sun has made an appearance, why not make sure you can catch the rays on your shiny locks? Dull, winter hair is a no-no now, so get glossy for the warmer months with our selection of shine-boosters.
Organic Surge Shine Boost Shampoo, £4.99 (www.organicsurge.com) cleanses and nourishes hair with the help of organic grapefruit and citrus essential oils to wash away dirt and impurities and break down product build-up that can leave a dull residue on your hair.
Then try boosting your shine potential even more with a super-powered conditioner like Paul Yacomine’s Intensive Repair Kit, £26.45 (www.cultbeauty.co.uk) – a highly concentrated, leave-in conditioner made of natural oils that is designed for use on damaged, dry or chemically processed hair. It’s state-of-the-art stuff – by using three separately-bottled components, the kit minimises the use of emulsions that take up space, have little conditioning benefit and need lots of extra chemicals to stabilise them. The result? A gorgeously lustrous mane.
Finish up your glossing routine with a shine-enhancing serum like TommyGuns Weather Protect Dew Drops Serum, £5.99 (www.tommygunshaircare.com). With jojoba oil and vitamin E, just a small drop will help make your hair smoother and silkier – and protect it from those April showers too!

STYLE
From curls to quiffs and from big hair to sleek crops, the catwalks this season were full of inspiration for your hair. Why not experiment with a new style for spring? If you need a hand, we’ve got the products and tools…
For a seriously funky Rhianna-inspired ‘do, enlist help from Keune Blend Glue, £14.50 (www.beautybay.com), which provides special styling effects with a matte finish. For strong definition and extreme hold, this styling glue will ensure your style won’t budge – even on the dancefloor! If you’re after a softer finish – think this season’s messy up-dos – experiment with Neal & Wolf’s Form Sculpting Lotion, £12.95 (www.kleaonline.com), which has been designed to help shape and hold as well as giving texture and stunning shine.
If you’re going to be using heat to style, then you need to protect your hair. So why not pick something that helps minimise the frizz into the bargain? VO5 Heat Defence Taming Spray, £2.50 (www.boots.com) is not only an absolute steal, it tames and adds gloss while preventing the damage that can occur from straighteners or curling tongs.
Now, let’s get styling! Cloud Nine stylers, £129.95 (www.cloudninehair.com) are the name on everyone’s lips at the moment. And it’s no wonder – they feature state-of-the-art temperature control technology, can smooth, flick, curl or straighten at lower temperatures and add shine every time you use them. A real investment.

Editor’s Letter (19.03.10)
There are few things better than an early spring day… Especially when we’ve had such a cruel, cold winter. Looking out of the window today makes me want to pull out my summer wardrobe, paint my nails a bright hue, and add a few summery highlights to my hair. In reality though, being English prepares me for the fact that we’ll no doubt have more than a few more wintery days before summer finally arrives – and even then, the good days will be interspersed with dull, damp ones. For that reason, I have just booked two weeks away over Easter for some guaranteed sunshine - and I am counting down the days. Forget Prozac – even taking the lid from one of my newly-purchased bottles of sun cream is enough to boost spirits. I have just one week to get my body ready for a bikini – a nasty sick bug last week did wonders for streamlining my figure, but not perhaps in the way I would have hoped – so I will be spending the next seven days body-brushing, fake-tanning, and attempting to make my feet look pretty. If you are escaping over Easter – or simply making the most of the warmer weather here in the UK (fingers crossed) – I wish you all the best with the beautifying. It can only get better from here…

Clinique. We have a few weeks to wait, but Clinique’s latest collaboration with the fashion label Milly is well worth marking in the diary. Buy any two products at the Clinique counter at Harrods between 8th and 24th April 2010 (one must be skincare) and you will be rewarded with a stunning bag designed by Michelle Smith for Milly, packed with seven cult Clinique products. It contains: Rinse off Makeup Solvent 60ml, Superdefense SPF25 Age Defense Moisturiser 15ml, Turnaround Body Smoothing Cream 75ml, Turnaround Concentrate Visible Skin Renewer 15ml, Colour Surge Eyeshadow Duo in Strawberry Fudge, Different Lipstick in Raspberry Glace, and High Impact Mascara. I am practically drooling in anticipation… Exclusively at Harrods.

Jemma Kidd. I got my hands on a few of Jemma’s Kidd’s latest launches last week – and top of my ‘must have’ list is the JK Jemma Kidd Perfect Pout Exfoliating Treatment Balm (£8). One side of the lipstick-shaped balm features a sugar-based exfoliant, which is effective enough to smooth away dry, flaky skin, yet gentle enough to use on even the most sensitive lips. On the other side is a silky, Vitamin-E enriched balm, which softens, protects, and soothes the newly-buffed skin. I’m keeping the tube on my dressing table so that I remember to use it every morning – and my lips have never felt smoother. www.asos.com

Flower Power. I’ve fallen head over heels for these Flower Power Rose Moisturising Face & Body Wipes (£1.29), which are tiny enough to fit into the smallest handbag. The wipes are best saved for face and body – but the affordable price just about justifies using them to mop up spills or wipe sticky fingers when a disaster happens. I’ve also discovered that they are pretty efficient at cleaning computer keyboards! They feel incredibly refreshing on skin and leave it feeling soft and moisturised, so I’ll be throwing the remainder of the pack into my handbag for hot, sticky days on the tube. www.victoriahealth.com

Weleda. There are few things more uplifting than Weleda’s new Pomegranate Creamy Body Wash (£8.95), which is loaded with organic pomegranate seed oil to nurture and hydrate the skin. The delicious, zingy scent is perfect for stirring senses on early spring mornings, with the fragrance clinging to skin for hours. Infused with pure essential oils of sandalwood davana and neroli, the body wash works to balance both mind and body. For such high quality ingredients, I’m very impressed by the price – and the large tube will keep you going for weeks. www.weleda.co.uk

RUSH. I’m a big fan of RUSH London, so my ears pricked up when I heard that their 50th hair salon opened yesterday (Thursday 18th March) on London’s Earls Court Road. After 15 years of company growth, the company are keen to give something back to the community and have teamed up with Great Ormond Street to launch their HAIRraising campaign, with all 50 RUSH salons holding charity events throughout April and May. To kick off the fundraising, RUSH Earls Court will donate £500 to HAIRraising if they can get 500 people through the door on the first five days of opening. What better excuse do you need for a hair-cut? www.rush.co.uk

Blog: COSMETIC SURGEON DR ROBERTO VIEL – ON THE LASTEST INNOVATIONS AT HIS HARLEY STREET CLINIC (19.03.10)
I have been a cosmetic surgeon on Harley Street, at my clinic the London Centre for Aesthetic Surgery, for twenty years. As you can imagine I have seen vast changes in the way cosmetic procedures are carried out, as well as cosmetic surgery itself becoming far more accepted and with more natural results. In the past, often a surgeon would look at a patient and only see the problem that needed to be fixed. Nowadays, it is all about well-being; giving advice on lifestyle and seeing the patient as a proper entity, not just a nose or a breast. I see myself more as a Beauty GP, giving advice on how to rejuvenate and slow down the ageing process – through surgical and non-surgical intervention, as well as exercise and lifestyle changes. The direction of cosmetic surgery is to be less aggressive, less invasive, and will have a larger focus on prevention and slowing down the ageing process. The newest developments in the industry are in methods that naturally activate the body’s ability to improve itself. Surgeons like myself are beginning to leave behind substances that are alien to the human body, such as silicon, and develop new ways of triggering natural reactions within the body. At the London Centre for Aesthetic Surgery we have recently begun to offer an anti-ageing method which utilises the patient’s own stem cells to generate elastin and collagen production. Called Platelet Facial Rejuvenation Injections, a patient’s own platelets are removed from their blood and injected into the face as a natural alternative to botox. This is already a very popular procedure in the US and there have even been rumours that Madonna and Kylie Minogue are fans. We also offer the option to use the patient’s own fat as a natural filler in the face. This fat is also injected with the patient’s stem cells to make it last longer, so it is a totally natural procedure in which we are effectively recycling elements of the patient’s own body to generate a positive reaction. This fat transfer effect can be used anywhere in the body and is on its way to replacing ‘boob jobs’ of old. Patients are beginning to opt to extract the fat from their stomach, thighs or bottoms to use in a breast augmentation procedure – far fewer chemicals and unnatural materials are used, and the patient gets two procedures at the same time! The effect and appearance of these procedures is much more true to nature as the injectibles become a part of the patient rather than just sitting on top of the natural form. This means that they will appeal to more people who might want surgical enhancement but don’t want to be as ‘well-endowed’ as Jordan or to achieve the Botox freeze. Breaking News: CHANEL LAUNCH ROUGE COCO LIPSTICK COLLECTION (19.03.10)
What comes to mind when you think about Chanel? Quilted handbags? Monochrome colours? Tweed jackets? Chanel No.5? This month, Chanel has added another irresistible icon to its collection with the launch of Rouge Coco Lipsticks, by Creative Director Peter Philips.
The collection combines iconic shades of the past – such as Sari Doré from 1954 and Rouge Noir from 1996 – with a range of new colours, including half-tones of pink, red, and brown. The packaging has also been revamped, retaining a heritage feel, but now casing the lipsticks for the first time in metal. A glance inside the cap reveals an engraved interlaced double C, whilst CHANEL is imprinted on the lipstick itself. Even the closing system has been designed and rigorously tested to ensure that the lid obtains an ideal balance between a soft press on the cap and the sound of the click.
Like all the most luxurious cosmetics, even the fragrance has been considered. Chanel’s in-house olfactory laboratory worked hard to develop a signature scent for the lipsticks – a bouquet of fresh roses, enhanced with a fruity raspberry accord and a subtle hint of vanilla.
Better still, the butter-soft lipsticks contain highly-developed pigments that swathe the pout in rich, long-lasting colour with just one sweep. Lips feel soft, conditioned, and comfortable – whilst they look utterly beautiful and sophisticated.
Coco Rouge Lipsticks cost £21 each and are available from Chanel Counters Nationwide.

Blog: CELEBRITY MAKEUP ARTIST TRICIA WOOLSTON DEMYSTIFIES MINERAL MAKEUP (19.03.10)
Mineral makeup has been around since the 1970’s but it has only really started to have a big impact in the last decade. More and more women have become aware of what we are loading onto our skin and ultimately penetrating into our bloodstream.
There are endless benefits to using mineral make up, but here are my top six:
- Crushed minerals are a natural source; true mineral products only have 4 or 5 ingredients. Some brands claiming to be mineral makeup are really only mineral-based, not in fact a complete true mineral makeup
- Mineral makeup is a natural sunscreen that is extremely important - no matter what age you are, every day could make a definite difference to protecting your skin
- When the application is perfected, mineral makeup is effortless to ensure a natural youthful glow
- It doesn’t clog pores so if you’re a party animal and dive straight into bed after a night on the tiles it’s no big deal - your skin can still breathe
- A little product goes a long way so it’s very cost effective
- It creates a flawless finish on all skin types - fantastic for those who suffer from skin complaints such as rosacea, birth marks, acne and open pores
There are many mineral, or mineral-based, products on the market: Bare Escentuals, ID, Glo Minerals, Jane Iredale, Sheer Cover, Mary Kay, ColorScience, Laura Geller to name just a few. One of my absolute favourites is Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics, as it is a pure mineral range.
Primers
A key part of my kit are primers - you can try Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics Mineral Primer (www.dermapure.eu), which is a favourite as is the range from Laura Mercier (www.lauramercier.com). Primers create a veil over the skin, evening out skin tone and helping lock on products you apply afterwards. This technique provides durability, so is especially good for brides who need perfect make up from day through to evening, and celebs on camera. It’s a great way to get that stay-put look for everyday too.
Foundations
I use various foundations, carrying different versions depending on the client’s desired result, i.e. mineral (of course!), satin to velvet finishes, luminating ones and matte ones.
The best foundations are so lightweight it doesn’t feel like you’re wearing makeup at all, and for me the best are those that give a perfect finish for any skin type. The Youngblood Pressed Mineral Foundation gives exceptional oil-control and has concealing properties that is excellent for problem skin. The special formulation combines minerals and rice powder which provides a smooth, velvety look, while retaining that healthy natural glow. I’ve recently used it on Speech Debelle and Joss Stone who both absolutely loved the result. I’ve heard that Cheryl Cole relied on it for her X-Factor appearances too, to keep that smooth, radiant look under the hot lights. The new Youngblood Hi-DEFINITION Hydrating Mineral Powder is a brilliant new discovery of mine and now high on my radar of miracle products as it instantly smoothes the skin giving an airbrushed effect, diminishing pores and mattifying the skin without making it look flat, especially paired with the foundation.
Colour
Blushers are one of my favourite products as they add instant dimension to the face as well as contouring products that I like to have in both cream and pressed powder finishes. Contouring the face is what brings a face alive and helps create a great starting point of my picture. Ultimately, each face I make up is like a painting but with makeup, hence the phrase ‘makeup artistry’.
Youngblood Crushed Mineral Eyeshadows are another new find and are stunning. The finish can either be subtle or intense depending on application. They can be used as they are or intensified by adding a drop of water to the pigment which creates a striking tone and depth to the pigment. The pigments are great for eyes but also other parts of the face and body. Using the right shade you can apply to the cheek bone, cupids bow, shoulders, shin and collar bones. Doing this will create a highlight to that particular area and a healthy glowing sheen to the skin, perfect for party nights and special events. Some of my core colours are Golden Beryl, Irish Moss and Cashmere.
Mascara is always a must, this is my desert island product and the one and only thing I have to use even if doing the school run and mascara’s partner in crime has to be a top set of eye lash curlers. Don’t leave home without them!

TRIED & TESTED... RINSE OFF CLEANSERS (19.03.10)
Speed up your skincare regime with our pick of rinse-off cleansers.

CLINIQUE RINSE-OFF FOAMING CLEANSER, £14.50 for 150ml (www.clinique.co.uk)
What they say: Rinse-Off Foaming Cleanser goes from cream to lather quickly with dense bubbles to provide smooth cleansing. Sodium Cocoyl Methyl Taurate, sourced from Japan, is one of the advanced, mild, cleansing agents in the formula, which gently cleans skin without stripping. Hyaluronic Acid and Glycerine help retain moisture in the skin.
The Results: I love the tube packaging with flip-top, which I found quick and easy to use. The pearlised cream felt luxurious to apply and the formula follows Clinique’s fragrance-free policy, although I noticed a mild chemical scent once it was applied to my face. Since using it, my skin has felt a lot smoother and appeared more even-toned. It is recommended that the Cleanser be followed by Clinique’s 3-step routine, however, I was so impressed with how thoroughly this cleansed my skin that I don’t think this is essential. I always thought Clinique was as a pricey brand, so I was thrilled to discover that this is less than £15. It is well worth the investment.
Best for: Oily skin

ORIGINS CHECKS & BALANCES FROTHY FACE WASH, £15 for 150ml (www.origins.co.uk)Ul balancing ingredients that distinguish exactly where skin needs moisture and where it needs oil absorption. Skin feels comfortably refreshed after cleansing, never tight, pulled or parched.
The Results: I struggle with both oily and dry areas on my face, but always pick products to target oiliness - I’ve never used a product for combination skin before. The packaging is simple and I like that the squeezy tube is convenient to use in the shower, requiring minimal effort. I love the fresh scent and the way that the formula froths upon application, meaning that I didn’t need to use very much each time and that it’s easy to cleanse the entire face quickly! This product worked wonders, leaving my skin feeling in the condition it should do once cleaned - not tight or greasy! It has completely converted me and I’d highly recommend it to anyone with a similar skin type.
Best for: Combination skin

NAKED ROSE SOFTENING FACE WASH, £3.99 for 150ml (www.nakedbodycare.co.uk)
What they say: For the most heavenly experience in face washing, we can’t recommend this product enough. It contains Rose Absolute, one of the most prized essential oils in the world. Damask rose is packed full of antioxidants which help combat the signs of aging and this gentle face wash is pH balanced to that of your skin.
The Results: The quirky packaging with irreverent slogans and directions is a far cry from my usual minimalist brand, but I found the bottle functional. I was concerned that the wash would strip my skin and leave it feeling tight, but the quality of ingredients is good, with no parabens, sodium lauryl sulphate or petrochemicals- I was also pleased to discover that natural products are becoming more affordable! The lightweight gel turns into a rich cream when combined with water – I found this pleasantly surprising as it feels far more luxurious than I expected and left my skin feeling velvety soft. Better still, the rose scent is incredible! I’m seriously impressed.
Best for: Value for money

CREME DE LA MER THE CLEANSING FOAM, £46 for 125ml (www.cremedelamer.co.uk)
What they say: The Cleansing Foam is a luxurious way to purify and cleanse. Designed with Crème de la Mer’s trademark Deconstructed Waters, precious jade and pearl gemstones and unique marine extracts, this special formula provides a deep cleanse that is both extremely gentle and yet thorough, promoting luminous, healthy looking skin.
The Results: I’ve always wanted to try Crème de la Mer but never felt that I could justify the expense, so I was very excited to be asked to test The Cleansing Foam. I wasn’t disappointed. Everything about this product screams luxury - from the box in the brand’s signature green, pink and white, to the sleek, flattened tube. However, the proof is in the product itself. When first squeezed, the formula is a thick, green cream with pearlised shimmer that turns white as it makes contact with dampened skin. I think that the name is slightly misleading, as I didn’t find that the formula foamed or lathered particularly – but in fact, I think it’s better as the rich cream feels incredibly indulgent and the scent is ultra-comforting. I loved the way that my skin felt after using this and although I wouldn’t be able to afford it on a long-term basis, I would highly recommend it to those who can.
Best for: Luxury

OLE HENRIKSEN AFRICAN RED TEA FOAMING CLEANSER, £25 for 207ml (Harvey Nichols)
What they say: This luxuriously foaming cleanser, enriched with anti-aging botanical extracts, will bring your skin to new levels of clarity and luminosity. Containing powerful, naturally antioxidant-rich African red tea, Ole Henriksen African Red Tea Foaming Cleanser strengthens the skin’s immune mantle, slowing the aging process and soothing the skin whilst Ester C, a stable form of Vitamin C, helps stimulate collagen synthesis and fight environmental damage.
The Results: I found this easy to apply - it lathers up beautifully and a little goes a long way to leave skin feeling effectively cleaned and every trace of makeup removed. It may have been my imagination, but I swear that my pores looked minimised - a splash of cold water was all that was required. Another bonus is that there’s no need to use a toner after this product, meaning that I saved time by skipping a step. I didn’t find the foam formula drying, but I definitely couldn’t forgo my serum and moisturiser, so perhaps this wouldn’t be the best choice for those with very dry skin. I absolutely loved the refreshing fruity scent and the bold packaging - and I found it so quick and easy to use. I will definitely continue to use it.
Best for: Ease of use

REN CALENDULA AND ARCTIC BERRY ULTRACALM CLEANSING MILK, £16.50 for 150ml (www.renskincare.com)
What they say: A gentle cleansing milk designed to leave sensitive or delicate skin purified, calm and soothed. Triglycerides from Coconut Oil gently emulsify and remove dirt and make-up, while bio actives from Arctic Blackcurrant Seed and Arctic Seabuckthorn Berry Oil boost skin lipid content and preserve moisture levels. Peroxidase enzymes from Fennel Seed combat pollution while flavonoids from Calendula help to leave skin calm and soothed.
The Results: I have extremely sensitive skin, with redness and dry patches on my face. I’ve found that switching to natural products has helped and so although I tend to be cautious of trying new products, I agreed to test this due to its natural credentials. The large bottle looks sleek on my bathroom shelf and the pump dispenser meant that it was easy to control how much I used, avoiding wastage. The formula looks like a rich cream in the bottle but is actually quite light upon application, with a delicate herbal fragrance. It doesn’t lather up which wouldn’t be to everyone’s liking - I know many associate bubbles with “cleaning” but since switching to SLS-free products to help my eczema, there’s no going back for me. I found that this lived up to its claims of being gentle and left my skin feeling soft and calmed, thumbs up!
Best for: Sensitive skin

Feature: SPRING/SUMMER FRAGRANCES (19.03.10)
Wherever you go, whatever you do, and whoever you share it with this spring and summer, make sure perfume is top of your priority list. We’ve found fragrances to suit every occasion.

OFFICE
Spending the entire summer outside would be idyllic – but in reality, the closest most of us will get to that kind of lifestyle is by pushing our desk a little closer to an open window.
An office perfume should strike a careful balance, being grown-up enough to be taken seriously in the boardroom, yet light and uplifting enough to get you through the day when you would far rather be sat outside a café on the continent, sipping coffee in the sunshine.
Our Top Pick: Balenciaga Paris Eau de Parfum, £42 for 30ml (Harvey Nichols) Just like the fashion label, this fragrance is effortlessly stylish. The scent is light enough for the warmest days of summer, yet powerful enough to cling to skin throughout the 9 to 5. With a blend of antique spring violets, hints of pepper, and a light musky base, the scent is sophisticated and incredibly addictive. Wear it with your sharpest suit and allow your mind to be transported – even momentarily – to sunny spring days strutting the boulevards of Paris.
Other Scents for the Office:
Miller Harris Un Petit Rien Eau de Cologne, £60 for 50ml (www.millerharris.com)
MALIN + GOETZ Petitgrain Tonic Eau de Toilette, £35 for 30ml (www.liberty.co.uk)
TOP TIP: Hot weather makes the pores in our skin open up, which causes more perfume to be absorbed and in turn, creates a much stronger scent. Sticking to your winter scent would be overpowering – especially in close environments like an office – so swapping to a lighter scent for the summer months is a necessity.

WEDDINGS
Heading to a summer wedding? A formal event calls for a heavier, more opulent scent – so get ready to wow the congregation with light musky bases and oriental top notes.
Our Top Pick: Calvin Klein Euphoria, £43 for 50ml (0800 086 6310). This scent is unique, slightly mysterious, and very memorable. It is feminine, yet will hold its own in a formal environment, working perfectly with a sharply-cut dress and nose-bleed high heels. It boasts top notes of pomegranate, persimmon, and lush green accords; a heart of dewy lotus blossom, champaca flower, and black orchid; and bottom notes of liquid amber, black violet, cream accord, and mahogany wood. The bottle – designed by Klein and Fabien Baron – was inspired by ‘an orchid about to bloom’.
Other Scents for Summer Weddings:
Olivia Giacobetti Sexy Angelic, £89 for 100ml (www.spacenk.co.uk)
Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir, £32 for 30ml (www.jomalone.co.uk)
TOP TIP: Apply your perfume before you get dressed. Perfume stains many different types of fabric – not ideal when you are ready to step out of the door for an important event.

NIGHTS OUT
Whether you are dancing the night away in Ibiza or strutting down your local high-street dressed in your gladrags, balmy summer nights call for a perfume that is as sparkling and fun-loving as you are.
Save those strong musky scents for the winter – and instead, opt for something lighter, fruitier, yet just as sexy.
Our Top Pick: Versus Versace Eau de Toilette, £30 for 30ml (Department Stores Nationwide). This scent is striking, sensual and modern – and will certainly hold its own on the dance floor. Team it with a high-impact top, piles of glittering jewellery, and ultra-glamorous makeup. The vibrant purple bottle contains a fragrance that starts with fruity top notes of star apple, lemon, and kumquat, then moves onto a feminine heart of orange flower and rose, then finishes with enveloping notes of musk, patchouli, and seductive musk.
Other Scents for Nights Out:
Hugo Boss Celebration of Happiness Solid Fragrance Necklace, £20 (Debenhams Stores Nationwide)
Vera Wang Glam Princess Eau de Toilette, £57 for 100ml (Department Stores Nationwide)
TOP TIP: Be careful spraying scent if you are wearing jewellery – the metal can react with the scent and cause irritation on the skin

ROMANTIC DATES
Whether he’s new on the scene or practically part of the furniture, a romantic evening out deserves the most delicate and alluring fragrance you can lay your hands on.
Our Top Pick: Aveda Love Pure-fume Absolute, £20 for 7ml (www.aveda.co.uk). This fragrance might be packaged in a tiny 7ml rollerball – but don’t underestimate its seductive power. One sniff and you will be hooked – and fingers crossed, your date will be too. Simply roll over your wrists and neck to be rewarded with a romantic blend of sandalwood, jasmine, rose, and ylang ylang that will last for hours. Good things really do come in small packages – and it’ll fit in the tiniest clutch bag too!
Other Scents for Romantic Dates:
Burberry Summer For Women, £39 for 100ml (The Perfume Shop).
Jeanne Lanvin La Rose Eau de Parfum, £49 for 100ml (Harvey Nichols).
TOP TIP: Apply scent to the back of your knees – heat rises and with it, so will your fragrance. Rather than choking your partner with too much scent, it will give a subtle, alluring effect that lasts all evening.

WEEKEND
It’s the weekend. You’ve kicked off your high-heels, left your makeup to a bare minimum, and pulled on your comfiest pair of wide-leg jeans. It’s time to welcome in 48 hours of ‘me time’ with a perfume that echoes your laid-back look.
Your fragrance needs to be fun and light-hearted. Heavy musks are out, fun fruity notes are in.
The trick to wearing perfume at the weekend is to keep the application light – try spritzing a fine mist onto clothes, rather than wearing directly on your skin.
Our Top Pick: Thierry Mugler ALIEN SUNESSENCE Edition Saphir Soleil Eau de Toilette, £39 for 60ml (Department Stores Nationwide). Imagine if the scent of bright sunshine could be bottled? Thierry Mugler has achieved the impossible with this ultra-uplifting summer scent, which is perfect for spritzing onto wrists at the beginning of the weekend. The energising top notes of pink grapefruit arrive first, closely followed by sweet middle notes of exotic monoi blossom, and finally bottom notes of warming white amber. Radiant, energising, and unique.
Other Scents for the Weekend:
Calvin Klein Eternity Summer, £32 for 100ml (0800 086 6310)
Marks & Spencer Island Collection, £12 for 3 x 25ml (www.marksandspencer.com)
TOP TIP: In the summer months, it is more important than ever to store your perfume away from direct sunlight. If a fragrance gets too hot, the scent will change.

GARDEN PARTIES
Heading to a garden party? Pull on a floral tea dress, slide a corsage into your hair, and reach for a bottle of something fun and flirty (perfume, that is…)
There’s one simple rule for the great outdoors - take inspiration from your surroundings with a scent that is fabulously fresh and floral.
Our Top Pick: L’Occitane Wild Cherry Tree Eau de Toilette, £27 for 50ml (http://uk.loccitane.com). We have fallen head over heels for this sparkling, fruity fragrance. It starts with fun, zingy notes of blackcurrant and citron (if you aren’t in the mood for a party, this will lift your spirits in a matter of seconds), then settles on skin with feminine, romantic notes of cherry blossom and rose, and finishes with delicate traces of cedar, sandalwood, and musk. If that isn’t enough, the packaging is ultra-pretty, so you won’t even be embarrassed if you are caught reapplying by the rose bushes. The fragrance is Limited Edition for summer, so we’re buying bottles by the crate-load.
Other Scents for Garden Parties:
Tisserand Wild Rose Pulse Point Perfume, £8.95 for 10ml (www.tisserand.com)
Jo Malone White Jasmine & Mint Cologne, £32 for 30ml (www.jomalone.co.uk)
TOP TIP: Try spritzing the scent onto freshly-washed hair. A cloud of fragrance will follow you around all day.

Editor’s Letter (12.03.10)
I hope you enjoy our Spring/Summer scent guide this week (click here if you haven’t read it). I’ve really enjoyed putting it together, as I love perfume – it’s possibly my biggest beauty obsession. In my teens and early twenties, I didn’t leave the house without applying it first. But something has happened in the last few years, and I never, ever remember to apply it before I walk out the door. I am considering sellotaping a bottle to the back door, so that I can spritz and walk through a cloud as I exit the building… My forgetfulness is a huge waste, as I have at least ten bottles of beautiful scent sat in my dressing table. Everything from Jo Malone’s Orange Blossom (my classic sunny day fragrance) to Agent Provovateur (for dinner dates) to Chanel Coco (the one I will always come back to). There are bottles that are no longer available - B Never To Busy To Be Beautiful’s Superworldunknown - and bottles that have only just hit shelves, like Calvin Klein Euphoria. Somebody once told me that we pick one signature scent and stick to it – but I gave up on that idea years ago… Why stick to one, when there are so many delicious concoctions out there? I am definitely not monogamous to my scent – when, it seems, I remember to have a relationship with it at all…

Treaclemoon. I discovered English beauty brand Treaclemoon last year – and have been hooked on their brilliant bath and body products ever since. Their four current collections are mouth-wateringly good – consisting of My Coconut Island, Vanilla Moment, Lemonade Days, and Raspberry Kiss - but I’ve just tested their latest launch: Lovely Mint Story (launching in May) and it’s my favourite yet. The Bath and Shower Gel (just £2.89 for 500ml) is refreshing, cooling, and zingy. There will be nothing better than stepping into the shower on the warmest summer days and treating skin to a lathering of this stuff. Larger Tesco Stores Nationwide.

Braun. I was recently sent Braun’s new Silk-Epil Xpressive Pro Wet & Dry 7681 (£129.99) – the new improved epilator system, which promises smoother, longer-lasting, more comfortable results. I’ve never tried an epilator before and was a bit apprehensive before I tested it, so I tested it in the bath (which I had heard was less painful). Apart from the areas around my knees, which seemed to be very sensitive, I found it surprisingly comfortable to use. My skin was very red afterwards – but I get the same results with waxing – but it had returned to normal by the following morning, leaving impressively smooth results. Shaving might be quicker and easier, but this contraption gives it a good run for its money. www.braun.com/uk

bareMinerals. Still wearing liquid foundation, but struggling with problem skin? The answer could be mineral makeup. Cosmetics brand bareMinerals have just launched the ‘Re Think Your Foundation’ Campaign’ to convince us to swap to a lighter base that is so pure we can sleep in it. I have been a fan of the brand’s SPF15 foundation for a while and am definitely backing the campaign. It gives a flawless, even-toned result and lasts throughout the day. Better still, it is far quicker to apply than liquid foundation with the ‘swirl, tap, buff’ application method. I strongly recommend that you visit your nearest bareMinerals counter to experiment with the range and experience a famous make-under. Your skin will thank you for it. To find your nearest counter, visit www.bareescentuals.co.uk

UK Beauty Awards. The UK Beauty Awards are just around the corner – and the final voting is now down to you, the beauty buying public. After nominations from beauty PR agencies, the products were shortlisted by beauty editors, journalists, and industry professionals (I’m lucky enough to be included in that group, as testing such an elite group of products is obviously a real pleasure). After you have cast your vote, the winners will be announced at Clothes Show London at Earls Court on Friday 25th June. The online voting is really easy – simply pick your favourite products from the six listed in each category. Click here to vote - www.diarydirectory.com/ukbeautyawards.aspx

Superdrug. Based down in Cornwall? If your beautiful county wasn’t enough of a reason to feel smug, you now have the opportunity to become a beauty VIP. To celebrate the opening of a new store in St Austell, the store is on the hunt for their first Cornish-based Superdrug Insider. If you win the coveted job, you will receive previews of new products, tickets to special events and a £100 gift voucher to spend at Superdrug. The competition closes on Monday 21st April – and you can nominate yourself at http://superdrugloves.com/superdrug-insiders/cornwall-insider/

TRIED & TESTED: MOTHER’S DAY GIFTS (05.03.10)
Looking for the perfect gift for Mother’s Day? We’ve given a selection of newly launched beauty products to six different Mums - and asked them to report back on their experiences.

ELEMIS SKIN NOURISHING MILK BATH, £49 (www.timetospa.co.uk)
What they say: Elemis Skin Nourishing Milk Bath was launched in a classic glass decanter bottle 20 years ago. Today, this award-winning, cult beauty product has been re-packaged in a beautiful Italian glass decanter, reminiscent of the original, to celebrate the brand’s 20th birthday.
The Results: As a busy Mum of two, I rarely get the chance to relax, let alone take a long soak in the bath. So being given this to test was a real treat as it gave me an excuse to fit a warm bath into my crazy schedule! The glass decanter packaging is stylish, but classic, and it now sits in pride of place in my bathroom. The milk itself was luxurious to use, creating lots of creamy bubbles that smelt delicious and left my skin feeling soft and smooth. I’d definitely recommend this – it would make a gorgeous and much-appreciated Mother’s Day gift.
Best for: Relaxing Mum

YSL LIPSTICK - IN NO. 30 FAUBOURG PEACH, £20 (www.ysl.co.uk)
What they say: An irresistible invitation to indulge. A provocative smile, bursting with life. Bright pink lips named desire. A kaleidoscope of emotions takes shape through contrasts with the stark, changing springtime light.
The Results: I’m a working mum and always wear makeup at the office – especially lipstick, which gives me an extra confidence. This YSL lipstick certainly doesn’t disappoint. I love the sleek gold packaging and the weight of it makes it feel expensive. Whilst the lipstick has a matte finish, it didn’t dry out my lips at all, but instead left them feeling smooth and supple. I love the classy bright colour - it suits my skin tone perfectly and really brightens up my look. Just one coat of the lipstick lasted me all day, which is great for a busy mum!
Best for: Working Mums

LUSH MUM HATBOX, £25.95 (www.lush.co.uk)
What they say: An extra special gift for extra special mums, this hatbox contains a selection of bath and body treats to spoil and pamper.
The Results: You can’t go wrong with the Lush Hatbox this Mother’s Day! It’s beautifully decorated on the outside (I’m intending to keep the box and reuse it when I’ve finished with all the delicious products) and inside is a feast of lovely smelling products to use in the bath. It’s great value for money too! I kicked my husband and children out and spent an entire Sunday morning using all the products and really pampering myself. It was heaven. From the bubbling bath melt to the delicious porridge soap (so good you’ll want to eat it) I couldn’t fault anything. And I’ve still got some left over to use!
Best for: Value for money

MARC JACOBS DAISY IN THE AIR EDT, £39.99 (www.theperfumeshop.co.uk)
What they say: This new scent from Marc Jacobs is a fantastic addition to your fragrance wardrobe. Daisy in the Air has a sparkling floral scent with notes of Violet along with the luscious natural freshness of Wild Strawberry, Violet Leaves and Ruby Red Grapefruit. Teamed with the earthy scents of Gardenia, Violet Petals and Jasmine Petals, one spray and you’ll love it forever.
The Results: I always thought I was too old to wear Marc Jacobs Daisy, but my daughter introduced me to the fragrance and now we both wear it. I was excited to try this new version and thrilled (but not surprised) to discover that it smells fantastic. I also love the packaging, which would please any Mum when they unwrapped it. I usually only wear perfume when I go out in the evening, but this version is lighter than the original and I wear it all the time now! The scent really cheers me up and is making me look forward to the summer months.
Best for: Perfume lovers

JO MALONE VANILLA & ANISE HOME CANDLE, £38 (www.jomalone.co.uk)
What they say: Vanilla & Anise blends notes of bergamot, neroli and star anise to create a touch of spice sparkling above transparent layers of delicate vanilla orchid and frangipani. The warmth of vetiver, white amber and the subtlest hint of clove complete this unexpected, modern story of vanilla.
The Results: I’m a new mum to a beautiful six-week-old baby who I adore. But I am constantly shattered and feel a shadow of my former glamorous self! So it sounds silly, but this beautiful candle is like a breath of fresh air. I’ve always been a huge fan of Jo Malone - her products are classy and luxurious, and this new Vanilla & Anise candle fits the bill perfectly. The candle smells fantastic and really transports me away from the nappies and feeding times. I can light this and sit back with a book and relax and rejuvenate. I’d recommend this to women everywhere – it’s pure luxury and is worth every penny.
Best for: Mums who crave a little luxury

BOBBI BROWN NATURAL FINISH LONG LASTING FOUNDATION, £28 (www.bobbibrown.com)
What they say: This oil-free, long-wearing foundation balances oily and combination skin, so you’ll have a soft-matte, even-looking complexion without needing to pile on powder throughout the day. And like all of Bobbi’s foundations the shades are yellow cased for a natural look.
The Results: As a full-time mum to three children, I’m always busy and running around. I love wearing makeup, but I often look in the mirror and recoil in horror at how shiny and oily my face is. Bobbi Brown is a classic brand and I adore their products, so I was thrilled when I was asked to try this out. The packaging is sleek and small enough to pop in a handbag (or baby changing bag) to use on the go. The pump action bottle is easy to use and you only need about two pumps to cover your whole face. I was thrilled with the results - my face stayed oil-free all day and I didn’t have to reapply. It made me feel much more confident and I’d definitely recommend this to anyone who is prone to shiny skin.
Best for: Busy Mums

Editor’s Letter (05.03.10)
Whilst having my hair cut and blow-dried recently (at the amazing HOBS Salon in Camden) I was told that the latest buzzword for hair is ‘Cheryl Cole’. Even when things aren’t going well in her personal life, by god that girl has enviable locks. The trend for celebrity cuts went crazy in the late 90’s with girls turning up to salons in their droves clutching pictures of Jennifer Aniston with feathered layers around her face. Then came the days of elfin crops – a la Sienna Miller and Posh Spice – as women opted a sophisticated, yet edgy look. But these days, women are heading back to the days of high-octane glamour with va-va-voom locks that boast a slight wave and lots and lots of volume. Leaving the salon with Cheryl-inspired locks is one thing – but how am I supposed to recreate the look at home when I have zero skills – and even less patience – with a hairdyer? I asked Sean Dawson (NHF Hairdresser of the Year 2009) for some advice. First, he told me to always start the blow-dry with my head upside down – I should do this until the hair is almost completely dry. Then I should flick the hair back and finish off upright by pulling the front sections over my face to dry, rather than pulling sideways towards my ears (where the hair naturally falls). They are two simple steps, but they have made a HUGE difference and I can’t recommend trying them enough.

Illamasqua. It was love at first sight when I spotted these Illamasqua nail varnishes (£13 each) in good-enough-to-eat shades of butter lemon (Blow), iced-mint (Nudge), powder blue (Caress) and soft lilac (Wink). In classic Illamasqua fashion, they strike the perfect balance between feminine and fashionable. Ice Cream pastels are huge trend for Spring/Summer and will work in every conceivable situation – summer weddings, tropical holidays, lazy afternoons in the sunshine, and days in the office when a dash of colour will lift spirits in seconds. Available now, exclusively at Selfridges.

Latest in Beauty. Latest in Beauty – the beauty sampling website – have another brilliant exclusive. Log on now to get your free sample of Estee Lauder’s new Hyrdationist Moisturiser for the price of a £1 text message (to cover postage or packaging). I’ve been looking forward to trying this product since I heard about the launch back in 2009 and can’t wait for the sample to drop onto my doormat. I don’t think I’ll be waiting long, as the website always delivers impressively quickly – and I will report back as soon as possible on my experience with the product. www.latestinbeauty.co.uk

Organic Surge. If you have sensitive skin, but still like to exfoliate, look no further than Organic Surge Skin Perfecting Polish (£5.99). I was sent a tube last week and was impressed with how smooth, yet hydrated my skin felt after use. The scrub contains finely ground apricot stones and walnut shells to gently remove dirt, impurities, and dead skin cells, whilst the creamy base is infused with organic essential oils of rosemary and lemon to detoxify and rejuvenate skin. Finally, lashings of almond oil helps to restore moisture to the skin. For the large 150ml tube, the price is a steal too! www.organicsurge.com

Korres. It’s approaching the time of year when I stock up on bronzer and apply it generously so that my pale skin won’t blind innocent bystanders. This spring/summer I’ve set my sights on Korres’ Monoi Oil Bronzing Powder, which is infused with lashings of Monoi Oil and Vitamin E to condition skin as it is applied. If that isn’t enough to convince you, the powder gives skin a natural glow, which looks more ‘St Tropez’ than ‘Costa Brava’. The bronzer was launched last year and is apparently already a huge hit with beauty editors. I can’t wait to get my mitts on it. www.cultbeauty.co.uk

First Light Cosmetics. I’m a big fan of mineral makeup – possibly leaning towards an obsession – and I was more than a little excited when I first heard about First Light Cosmetics for the first time. The products are high-quality, great for the skin, and ultra-flattering. This month, the brand are offering an exclusive 20% off all orders over £5 to all readers of The-Beauty-Pages.com. Blog: DAILY EXPRESS WRITER CLAIRE BRAYFORD TESTS THE SMARTXIDE CO2 LASER SYSTEM – AND ADMITS THAT IN BEAUTY, PAIN IS GAIN (05.03.10)
Many women long to radically change the texture of their skin, but what lengths will they go to?
I had always dreamt of the perfect complexion, and being able to leave the house makeup free and ready for any close up - but so far had yet to achieve it. I had tested every facial treatment going - microdermabrasion, IPL, Oxygen facials - but I was always left disappointed when each one barely scratched the surface. So when I head about the Smartxide Co2 Laser system, the latest in tissue rejuvenating laser technology, I figured I had nothing to lose.
I went to meet Dr Aamer Khan, co-founder of Harley Street Medical Skin Clinic, and one of the most respected cosmetic doctors in London, and his wife Lesley, who has worked in the beauty business for the last two decades. I knew I was in safe hands.
The thriving clinic is booked back-to-back with everyone from pop-stars to teenagers all with one thing in common – problem skin. At my first consultation, Dr Khan discussed my expectations and explained that the treatment works by firing a CO2 laser in very precise bursts in a matrix pattern across the skin. Tiny holes are created which stimulate collagen production, forcing the skin to repair and regenerate. However, unlike more traditional lasers, the surrounding skin is left untreated to ensure a more rapid recovery. Everything from wrinkles to acne and scarring to sun damage can be improved, and will continue to improve, for many months following the treatment.
Lesley was also on hand to answer any questions and give a warm, and reassuring welcome. The clinic prides itself on its accessibility – and the couple have been known to make VIP housecalls to many of their celebrity clients in need of some discreet botox or a skin peel. Lesley was also keen to stress that this was an invasive treatment and I would be very red for several days afterwards.
Happy to proceed, Dr Khan took a Visia complexion scan of my face which measures the percentage of sun-damage, bacteria, wrinkles and texture of my skin. And a week later, on Saturday morning, I was booked in for my treatment.
I was feeling a little nervous, but as I lay back on the white toweled bed to have my face cleansed and the topical anesthetic applied, Lesley helped me to relax.
If you have ever had IPL, this is several notches more painful. It felt like a sharp sting and took around 20 minutes to complete. Afterwards my face was scanned again and my skin looked like it was covered in tiny white dots.
That evening, my boyfriend could barely tell I had had anything done, the next day, however, was a different story. I looked like I was suffering from the severest sunburn and my face was also quite hot and itchy. Dr Khan had advised dabbing it with soothing spring water and salt with a surgical swab.
By Monday, my face had begun to scab and I was beginning to wonder how I was ever going to go back to work.
By Wednesday, it was still very red, although the first traces of fresh pink skin could be seen beneath.
By Friday, I was just about ready to go out and face the world.
At my next appointment a week later, the results were there in black and white. My Visia scan showed that the wrinkles around my eyes had totally disappeared, and the texture, bacteria and sun damage had improved by a third.
Six months later and my skin has kept on improving. Looking back at old photographs I am amazed at how much sun damage I had, all of which is now gone. My pores are radically more refined and I have an even complexion, which I am happy to show makeup free.
Yes it was uncomfortable, and as my boyfriend pointed out, I did look like Hell Boy for a week, but as they say, beauty is pain, and this is one facial treatment definitely worth enduring.
Treatment starts at £900, contact Harley Street Medical Skin Clinic, visit www.harleystreetskin.co.uk or call 020 7935 0986

Spas Review: CARRICK SPA AT CAMERON HOUSE, LOCH LOMOND, SCOTLAND (05.03.10)
Location: Cameron House, Loch Lomond, Dunbartonshire, G83 8QZ. 01389 755565. www.cameronhouse.co.uk
Facilities: Cameron House takes your breath away from the moment you step through the revolving doors. Where else would you find décor that befits a traditional Scottish hunting-lodge, with dark, moody lighting, wooden stag’s heads mounted on the walls, roaring fires, and bright tartan upholstery – alongside striking modern touches, like floor-to-ceiling windows, vast plasma televisions, and quirky pieces of art? That is the beauty of this luxury hotel, set on the banks of Loch Lomond in Scotland, just 20 minutes drive from Glasgow airport. Cameron House is traditionally Scottish, yet pampers guests with ultra-comfortable bedrooms, impeccable service, and premium dining. The hotel boasts four gourmet restaurants where the food is quite simply to die for, a prize-winning golf course right on its doorstep, incredible views over the Loch, and Carrick Spa just a short shuttle-bus ride away. The spa has won the title of Scotland’s best hotel spa for two years in a row – and it’s easy to see why… The facilities are extensive, including Infra Red Sauna, Sauna, Caldarium, Tepidarium, Hydro therapy pool, Aromatherapy steam room, Hammam steam room, and Experience showers – alongside a 20-metre pool, Jacuzzi, Hydrotherapy pool, and an utterly stunning rooftop infinity pool, which looks out over the Loch and surrounding mountains. The tempting choice of treatments is perfect for easing tired muscles and refreshing weary minds – whilst the relaxation room is possibly the most indulgent you will ever come across, with single beds to fall into and the biggest, fluffiest duvets to climb under until you are ready again to face the outside world.
Ambience: At Cameron House, designer gladrags meet wellington boots, romantic breaks meet family holidays, and dreamy spa treatments meet muddy walks around the Loch. The place feels incredibly luxurious, yet there isn’t an ounce of stuffiness. Babies in prams sit alongside parents enjoying a posh meal for two, whilst dogs pass you in the corridors as you totter in high heels to your dinner date. Just like the open fires crackling away at every turn, the place is warm, welcoming, and strangely addictive.
Treatment Tested: Classic Massage, £80 for 50 minutes.
Comfort Zone – a premium Italian product range that aims to create a synergy between nature and science – is only offered at the finest spas, so I knew I was in for a treat. The massage itself was nothing out of the ordinary, but that isn’t what I wanted – instead, I simply wanted to switch off, whilst a talented therapist kneaded away knots and stresses. That is exactly what I got, as my shoulders, back, legs, feet, arms, and hands were treated to an indulgent massage, with a relaxing blend of essential oils. I drifted off to sleep during the massage, yet jumped down from the treatment bed feeling energised and refreshed.
Cameron House is currently offering spa breaks from just £115 per person, including overnight accommodation, full Scottish breakfast, a relaxing 30 minute refresher facial, 30 minute classic massage, thermal experience, and lunch in the café spa. Breaking News: BOBBI BROWN LAUNCHES ‘PRETTY POWERFUL’ CAMPAIGN (05.03.10)
This month, beauty advertising campaigns are taking an exciting new turn – as Bobbi Brown, celebrated international makeup artist and founder of Bobbi Brown cosmetics, is launching the ‘Pretty Powerful’ campaign to celebrate the diverse beauty of ‘real women.’
The campaign features ‘real women’ in place of professional models – a first for the prestige cosmetics industry – and will feature in women’s fashion and lifestyle magazines, as well as on-counter promotional material and online.
Bobbi Brown selected six women from different walks of life to feature in the landmark campaign. The makeup artist is a long-standing advocate of ‘real women’ and a champion of individualistic beauty. She says: “Models are certainly beautiful, but they represent such a small cross-section of women that it’s unrealistic to expect everyone else to conform to their standards. I think women can gain a lot of confidence by seeing realistic, beautifully natural images celebrated in the media.”
She contines: “It’s simple advice, but I always tell women to be who you are. This means everything from learning to love your lines to appreciating your unique features. I think we should start using the phrase ‘living’ instead of ‘aging’. Lines are proof that we’ve lived life. We get them when we show emotion, when we laugh, and when we express ourselves. It’s also really important to live in the present. We spend a lot of energy feeling bad that we don’t look like we used to, or that we don’t look like someone else – instead of appreciating what we do look like.”
Watch out for the campaign at Bobbi Brown counters Nationwide.

Feature: LONDON FASHION WEEK REPORT (05.03.10)
Industry contacts and events bible Fashion Monitor reports on the trends that fashion-forward beauty aficionados will be sporting for Autumn/Winter 2010. From fishtail plaits and pastel hair colours to vampish red lips and pearlescent skin, Fashion Monitor Editor Victoria Todd explains how to achieve the looks.

JASPER GARVIDA
Jasper's Autumn/Winter look was all about old school Hollywood glamour, with a modern twist. Fierce, glossy red lips, defined brows and porcelain skin were paired with messy curls rolled under to create the appearance of a bob.
Proving that pale is oh-so-chic, the models' skin provided a matte, flawless base to showcase the dramatic red lip. Create the perfect canvas by blending MAC Studio Tech Foundation over the skin to reduce redness – choose a colour which matches the skin on your jawline exactly rather than opting for a warmer shade. Cover up blemishes and dark circles with Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage, and finish with a dusting of Shu Uemura's Loose Face Powder to create a matte effect without adding weight.
For the ultimate berry red lip, apply Guerlain KissKiss Exces de Rouge with a lip brush to create the perfect pout. A lip liner added afterwards will ensure you don't stray outside your natural lipline and will add definiton to your lips; pay particular attention to your cupids bow. For the finishing touch, after blotting and reapplying lipstick to create longevity of colour, use a lightweight gloss all over lips to ensure they are the focal point of your face; MAC's Clear Lipglass is the best at creating long-lasting shine.
The hair at Jasper's show sums up a key trend that will continue to develop throughout Autumn/Winter 2010: deconstructed glamour. To replicate the look at home, start by building body by adding a mousse to damp roots such as label.m Volume Foam. It's vital you use a protective spray as the hair will be subjected to intense heat; try label.m Heat Protection Spray and dry in using a paddle brush, directing heat downwards to create shine. Tong the hair in sections to create curls before gently brushing out. Next roll the hair under and to one side, and pin in place to create the bob. A high-shine hairspray will finish the vintage look and hold everything in place.

LOUISE GOLDIN
Models were described as an ‘ethereal army with a grungy edge’ at Louise Goldin, thanks to their perfectly dishevelled hair and gunmetal doe eyes.

Hair was given a matte finish to add depth and texture. To achieve this look, start by drenching hair in a strong-hold mousse, like TIGI Curlesque, before twisting into a tight topknot. Apply heat to set the waves before letting the hair down and diffusing the ends with your fingers. The key to creating this messy look is to add definition; separate the ends with a defining serum. Work KMS California Curl Up Curl Balm through fingers before applying, and pull hair over one eye for a sexy finish.

Makeup was dark and heavy, with skin given an iridescent glow. Use St. Tropez Wash Off Mousse to even out skin tone and blemishes, before applying St. Tropez Skin Transformer on the areas of your body on show – it works best on the décolletage and upper and lower arms. Use sparingly to keep the look fresh and subtle.
For the face, the eyes say it all - the face needs to be nude to make the eyes really pop. Start by prepping the eyes with Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer. Next, load up an eyeshadow brush with a gunmetal grey shadow and apply to the lids and upper eye area, as well as under the lower lid – for a catwalk-ready look, apply a heavy layer or for the faint-hearted, keep it light for a more wearable effect. The secret to this look is in the finishing touches. Lightly dust the eyes with a loose gold shimmer to give an otherworldly illusion.

AMINAKA WILMONT
The Scandinavian design duo unveiled a fresh-faced windswept look with models looking as though they had been for a blustery seafront stroll.
Hair is messy and swept to one side with a fishtail plait at the back. To build up the texture use a volumising product such as label.m Volume Mousse before blasting dry. Plait the back of the hair leaving a section at the front and use plenty of hairspray to create the side swept look. For girls with shorter hair, you can really ramp up the volume and part hair in a deep side parting to create a peek-a-boo effect across the eye. The key product for achieving the messy volume look is label.m Resurrection Style Dust; sprinkle on the roots of hair and massage in to create extra lift.
Makeup focused on sea blue eyes, luminous skin and pearlescent nude-pink lips. To get the look use a lightweight foundation such as Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser or for more coverage opt for CHANEL’s Vitalumiere. The trick to pretty not gaudy frosted pink lips is to choose a shade close to the natural tone of your lips. MAC’s frosted lipstick in Sandy B is a natural shell-like pink for pale girls or for darker skin tones you could try Plastique, a peachy golden brown. The sea blue winged eyeshadow will look particularly striking against brown eyes. Apply a deep blue shadow to the eyelid only and use a lighter blue liner on the insides of eyes and extend into the corner to emphasise the almond shape. Finish by extending the liner out in a winged flick – or to really emulate the catwalk look apply the liner in criss-cross strokes at the outer corner, to give the impression of wind ravaged lashes.

HERMIONE DE PAULA
Rising star Hermione de Paula sent shockwaves through the audience with her futuristic themed look. Hair was inspired by Milla Jovovich in The Fifth Element and makeup was equally as dramatic; models had matte, alabaster skin with black or beige lips and an unusual focus on the brow.
Hermione's show offered inspirational ideas for Autumn/Winter 2010. A literal translation of her look could look Halloween-ish, but there are several key trends to reference here.
Hair shows a move away from natural, glossy tones favouring artificial colours that are not for the faint-hearted. Model's wore wigs cut and coloured by the TONI&GUY team, but to get a similar look at home ColourFX offers an array of spray-in colours such as Punk Pink or Bizarre Blue. Darker haired girls can emulate the trend for a silver streak with the ColourFX spray in Sacred Silver. If you're thinking of a more permanent colour, then a visit to the salon is the only (safe) way.
The orange streak across brows shows that heavy, defined brows will continue to be key for Autumn/Winter Choose a pencil specifically for brows in a shade slightly darker than your own colouring to add definition to brows and fill in any spaces; the key to this look is to start slightly before the inside of your eye for the on-trend look but retain your femininity with an natural arch. Finish with Benefit's Speed Brow for the ultimate in groomed brows.
If the icy-toned hair and power brows are a trend too far, you can still reference the futuristic trend with metallic eyeliner in a bronze shade such as Barry M’s Metallic Liquid Eyeliner in Gold or try the new range of metallic mascaras from No7, on counters mid May.
Pick lipstick with a creamy texture in a pale coffee shade such as Equality by MAC.

WILLIAM TEMPEST
The look at William Tempest screamed modern day opulence; eyes were rich and mesmerising whilst the hair sculpted and sumptuous.
Ponytails were taken to a new level with a quirky twist on the classic. The crux of this look is for hair to look ‘done’. Start by straightening the hair to ensure it’s sleek and apply a smoothing cream to seal in the ends. Next, pull hair into a high ponytail by pulling hair off the face with a brush to ensure it’s smooth, and fasten with a hair band. Separate the ponytail into two, and bring the upper half up over your head. Fasten with a band three quarters of the way down, so the end of your hair acts as a faux fringe. Pin down the ponytail with a few grips and, using a round brush, curl the free end to create a retro curl. Set the whole look with a firm holding spray, and create a high-shine finish with label.m's Shine Spray.
A Cleopatra inspired makeup style put all emphasis on the eyes. Graphic, bold lines mixed with a green metallic shadow made for a Mediterranean luxe finish. To achieve this look, start by preparing your base. Buff your foundation into the skin for an even tone and finish with a translucent pressed powder. The overall look of the base is to be pale and flawless without looking unhealthy - so add a dash of colour by contouring the cheekbones with a gold highlighter, like Benefit Big Daddy Lust Dust. Angular black liner gives the eyes a Pharaoh feel – use a thick liquid liner to line the upper lids and bring to a point. Next, apply a soft gold based green eye shadow (try Barry M Dazzle Dust in Khaki) and blend on the upper lid, following the eyeliner line and again, bring to a point. If you’re feeling daring, use a hard eyeliner brush to create the ‘arrow’ look in the corner of the eye. Finish with lashings of black mascara and a slick of bubblegum pink gloss.

AMANDA WAKELEY
Minimalism reigned at Amanda Wakeley as the look du jour was a nude and soft aesthetic of neutral tones such as taupe and mink.
Hair was given a tousled, day at the beach look which perfectly complemented the essence of the show. Whilst wavy hair was big last season, it has matured for Autumn/Winter with a more glossy and luxurious finish. This versatile style will work on all hair types. Simply part the hair in the centre and rough dry. Apply a salt-based texture spray to give it that laissez faire look – Charles Worthington Front Row Rough & Tousled Salt Spray will give it the casual and matte finish that’s needed.
Don’t be fooled into thinking that the natural look requires minimal work – it needs to look flawless and finished but is easily achieved with the right products, with an emphasis on the base rather than the eyes or lips. Start the look with a slick of Barbara Daly Face Lift, a tinted moisturiser that gives the skin a dewy, illuminated appearance. Over this, apply a light coverage foundation, such as Rimmel Renew and Lift, to cover flaws and blemishes without dulling the skin and continue with a dab of cream blush to highlight the cheeks. Strong, curled eyelashes need to be framed by bold brows, which can be defined using an eyebrow pencil to suit your colouring. The eyes need to be kept clean and fresh, so use a mousse-based mascara such as Barbara Daly Smudge-Proof Mascara in Brown or opt for a fat brushed wand to keep the lashes soft. Soft pink lips complete the look, so apply a dash of cream blush to give an understated finish.
