Feature: TRENSETTERS (29.05.09)
A new age in beauty has dawned that’s set to reinvent the way we use products forever. Here’s our pick of the latest pacesetters

HARVEY PRINCE AGELESS FANTASY (£54.49, 100ml)
Smell is often considered our most powerful sense. Now it’s being touted as a wrinkle reducer by an unlikely source. Master perfumer Harvey Prince is challenging time with Ageless Fantasy (0208 4160765; www.agelessfantasy.co.uk), billed as the world’s first anti-ageing scent. Extreme as it may sound, he’s engineered an aroma that adopts the principles of natural biochemistry, which is said to make the wearer smell younger by stimulating happy childhood memories.
Prince has harnessed ingredients that we traditionally associate with adolescence to invent an 'essence of youth': a fragrant composition of fruity notes including pineapple, pink grapefruit, mango and fresh leaf greens. The perfume was created in partnership with scientists at Rutgers University in the US. With their help, Prince’s research found that when men smelled a woman wearing the fragrance they thought she was eight years younger on average.

OLAY REGENERIST DERMA EYE POD (£29.99 for 8 weeks)
Hot on the heels of its recent ‘super cream’, leading skincare expert Olay (www.olay.co.uk) releases Regenerist Derma Eye Pod, a home treatment that features a built-in foam applicator to deliver optimum results. The unique applicator uses a 360 degree targeted approach, massaging the areas around the brow bone and eye corner. Furthermore, the device gently exfoliates leaving a smoother surface, while the delicate movements help to reduce puffiness.
Part of Olay’s Regenerist Precision Solutions range, the box of 24 treatments lasts 8 weeks. The formula works on a three pronged approach: resurfacing, filling in wrinkles, and reducing puffiness. Anastasia Achilleos, celebrity facialist comments: “There certainly are occasions when as a facialist I will use beauty tools during a treatment as I know this will give a thorough, even and targeted application, exactly where it is needed. I am a convert to the new Olay Regenerist Eye Derma-Pods and think it’s great that they offer massage and exfoliating benefits as well as a formula containing anti-ageing peptides all in one package. They are so easy to use at home and you will see results immediately!”

ST TROPEZ AROMAGUARD
We all know that sunless tanning works wonders for those who want instantly beautiful colour with no health risks attached. But there’s no fooling anyone when the unique smell of DHA can be a pesky giveaway, not to mention an unpleasant side effect. Luckily, expert tanning brand St Tropez (www.st-tropez.com) has taken the whiff out of self tanning with a ground-breaking technology called Aromaguard, which counteracts the tell tale odour by at least 70%, substituting it with a delicate fragrance.
How does it work? Here’s the science part, as Claire Holland, Senior Account Manager of CPL Aromas, which helped to perfect the formula, explains. “The principles of the breakthrough for the St Tropez products was to fully understand the self tanning process and then use the Aromaguard technology to counteract the process,” she says. “Many brands have tried to mask or squash the smell of the base using very powerful fruity, sweet fragrances but this unfortunately only works to a minimal level and for a limited amount of time as the skin’s own proteins then react with the product to create an even more powerful odour. Understanding the nature of the odour generated allows the cutting edge fragrance technology in Aromaguard to reduce the creation and perception of the odour generated by up to 70%.”
The Aromaguard technology is currently patented and exclusive to St Tropez. It’s available in the new-look Self Tan and Everyday range.

FREEZE 24-7 ICE SHIELD SPF15 (£21.60, 100ml)
Experience a new way of applying your daily sunscreen with Ice Shield from Freeze 24-7, a cleanser that ‘washes on’ essential protection. Claiming to be the first of its kind, the multifunctional formula means that as you purge your skin of dirt and impurities, a UVA/UVB coating is left on the surface. Using an exclusive complex dubbed Innovative Aquea SPF™ technology, it binds sunscreen to the skin providing a ‘capsule’ that acts as a shield from potentially harmful rays. Furthermore the powerful cleanser is infused with panthenol to nourish the skin, silk amino acids to condition and tocopheryl acetate that fights against damaging free radicals. Freeze 24-7 has received the thumbs up from The Skin Cancer Foundation as an effective UV sunscreen, preventing potential sun damage - one of the main causes of ageing skin.
Freeze 24-7 is available from Space NK stores (0208 7402085; www.spacenk.co.uk)

NOUVEAU CONTOUR LVL LASHES (from £45)
Lash treatments have never been more popular. With sales of false lashes posting record numbers recently, this eye-opener is bound to cause a flutter of attention. British beauty brand Nouveau Contour (0845 644 3994; www.lvl-lashes.co.uk) is offering a fresh take on lash treatments with a unique ‘lifting’ service. Keen to distance itself from lash perming, the LVL system relies on a Lifting Balm that straightens, not curls, the hair to guide the lashes upwards. The eye-widening formula is infused with conditioning proteins to nourish the hair, and a volumising agent to elevate your very own lashes to new heights, providing a perfect platform for mascara. The process takes about 45 minutes and the results are said to last the life of your lashes (approx 8 to 12 weeks).

CARITA REVITALISING SCRUB FOR THE SCALP (£29.00, 150ml)
We’re all used to sloughing off dead skin from our skin, but ever thought of exfoliating your scalp? Premium French beauty house Carita (0207 3138787; www.carita.co.uk) is interestingly championing the idea with a new Revitalising Scrub. According to the founding Carita sisters, they believed that “beautiful hair wasn’t possible without a healthy scalp”. With this in mind, it’s released an exfoliator that is massaged into scalp to encourage super shiny hair from the roots. It’s a unique treatment with a three-way action designed to eliminate impurities and dead cells from the scalp, improving the quality of your locks. The complex is composed of roasted sunflower seeds and jojoba to promote thick, healthy looking hair from the base, while a luxurious blend of essential minerals energise the scalp, helping to strengthen and revitalise the hair.

TRIED & TESTED: WATERPROOF MASCARA (29.05.09)
Whether you’re heading off to exotic shores, swimming laps in your local pool, or dodging summer rain showers – you need a waterproof mascara that you can rely on. We’ve tested six that promise to stay put all day, whilst dramatically extending lashes.

LANCÔME PARIS HYPNOSE WATERPROOF MASCARA, £19.50 (www.lancome.co.uk)
What They Say: Hypnose creates lash volume that you can control. The sensor bristle brush glides through your lashes, separating them while applying evenly from base to tip. An ultra-light fluid formula, you can build your lashes, over and over, without smearing, smudging or clumping. The effect? Truly hypnotic.
The results: The short, flexible bristles on the brush coated my lashes perfectly, but sadly I didn’t see the incredible results that it claimed - I wasn’t amazed by the lashes length or volume. My eyes are very sensitive, so I was glad that the formula was gentle and was equally pleased that the mascara could be easily removed with eye makeup remover. I was impressed by its staying power – I applied it before my morning shower to really test it and there were no smudges down my cheeks! I’ll definitely take it on holiday with me later in the summer, but would stick to my regular mascara for evenings out.
Best for: Sensitive eyes

DIORSHOW BLACK OUT WATERPROOF MASCARA, £20 (0207 216 0216).
What they say: DiorShow Waterproof elevates the eyes to star status in one sweep. Lashes are instantly thickened, lengthened and seductively curved, while Dior’s exclusive Aquastop water-resistant technology ensures that they stay perfect in any circumstance.
The Results: Wow, this is my kind of mascara! It is intensely black in colour, which really framed my eyes, and would look fantastic with some waterproof liner too. One coat was all it took to plump, volumise and lengthen my lashes – so it’s great for people who are pushed for time in the morning. It stuck fast all day – even during a lunch time jog – but was easy to remove in the evening with regular eye makeup remover. I’m going on a very nice city break in a couple of weeks and this is exactly the kind of product I need.
Best for: Making an impact

L’OREAL PARIS EXTRA-VOLUME WATERPROOF COLLAGENE MASCARA, £9.78 (www.lorealparis.co.uk)
What They Say: Letting you in on their secret to lash volume, L’Oreal has created an expert combination of a super-sized brush and a Hydra-Collagen enriched formula, for breathtaking volume. Lashes look instantly plumped up.
The Results: With just one coat, I was astounded by just how thick my lashes looked. I’ve always thought my eyelashes were quite short and straight, but this really opened them up and made my eyes look huge. This mascara has a very big brush and I initially found it quite difficult to get to grips with, but once mastered I achieved full, even coverage. The result was impressive. On the beach I usually forgo mascara, but I could be tempted to sweep this on in the morning. I will definitely wear it though in the humid evenings, to make sure I have lash impact that will last the whole night.
Best For: False Lash Effect

YVES SAINT LAURENT EVERLONG WATERPROOF MASCARA, £21 (COUNTERS NATIONWIDE)
What They Say: A long-lasting waterproof formula which promises a double-lengthening effect with its new, innovative Lash Growth Booster brush. Sweep on from root to tip, and watch your lashes grow, grow, grow.
The Results: This mascara produced a lovely feathered effect - my lashes were separated and noticeably lengthened on application. With a second application they didn’t look too overstated - a welcome change to my usual dramatic look. I wore this mascara on a night out with my friends and I’m glad I did! As soon as the wine was flowing, I was crying with laughter, but my eyes were completely smudge-free. My lashes didn’t stick together, as I’ve often found with waterproof mascaras – they remained as fluttery as before. I’m very impressed!
Best For: Subtle Glamour

MAX FACTOR WATERPROOF VOLUME & DEFINITION MASCARA, £8.99 (www.maxfactor.co.uk)
What they say: Defines and separates lashes to create beautifully framed eyes that have a striking, professional look - the kind a makeup artist could create! The high tech IFX brush works to evenly coat individual lashes, even those hard to reach ones at the corners of your eye.
The Results: I spend several evenings a week in the gym after work, so I tried out this one in the hope that it would last the day – as well as a workout. After applying my usual makeup in the morning, I swept on two coats of the mascara and instantly looked much more awake than I felt! As promised, it gave me beautifully framed eyes. While at the gym, it failed to smudge at the first signs of sweating and even post-shower. My lashes were still as they were that morning. This mascara has serious staying power!
Best for: Durability

CLINIQUE LASH POWER MASCARA, £14.50 (www.clinique.co.uk)
What they say: This super long-wearing formula will not smudge, ensuring that your mascara stays where it belongs - on your lashes, and not on your face. Resisting rain, pool water, tears, sweat, sebum and humidity, this amazing product delivers fantastic results that last for 24 hours.
The Results: I was really looking forward to trying this mascara, because as a non-waterproof wearer, I am anxious about removing something so durable. It glided on easily to produce a subtle, but defined, look. The colour was great too – black, but slightly grey or silvered, which illuminated my blue eyes. Removal was really simple - all I needed to do was soak a cotton wool pad with very warm water and press gently against my lashes to loosen the mascara. I’ll definitely continue to use this product.
Best for: Natural look

BLOG: CO-FOUNDER OF COSMETICS A LA CARTE – GIVES A FASCINATING INSIGHT INTO THE BRAND’S PAST, PRESENT, AND DEDICATED CELEBRITY FOLLOWING (29.05.09)
Cosmetics A La Carte was inspired by a desire to change the way makeup was sold and perceived...
Myself and my partner, Christina Stewart, opened our shop in 1973 on Motcomb Street in Knightsbridge, where we still are today. Cosmetic chemists, we had both previously worked for ‘faceless’ corporations, beavering away behind the scenes in our white lab coats. They were great training grounds, but these were exciting times and we wanted to start a bit of a cosmetic revolution, inventing a completely new way of creating and selling colour. Costmetics A La Carte was born!
We pioneered the ‘try before you buy’ ethic with ‘made-to-measure’ options. It was a completely new approach and our boutique fast became a hot bed of make-up artistry creativity. It was a joy to be a part of the creative fashion explosion in the 70s and 80s. We are proud to have been the very first makeup range to offer bright colours, dazzling glitters and custom-blend, skin-matching foundations to celebrities, royalty, make-up artists and customers alike”. Everyone from Princess Diana to Grace Jones, Blondie to U2 graced our doors.
Together we developed the art of bespoke cosmetics, where many of the products and colours evolved by creative links with luminaries of the age: Barbara Hulanicki of Biba, Barbara Attenborough at Boots, Anouska Weinberg, Marie Helvin, Jerry Hall, and Barbara Daly, the then makeup artist supremo working with Barry Lategan at Vogue.
Today, we still hold this spirit dear but with fresh, new modern approach. Luxurious, covetable and ever-evolving Cosmetics A La Carte goes beyond fashion, tailoring colour for all individual styles and tastes. Modern day fans include Freida Pinto, who had a custom-blend foundation made for the filming of Slumdog Millionnaire and for her red carpet appearance at the BAFTAs. Dannii Minogue is a huge fan of our Outliners and Lady GaGa was recently seen sporting our new Flush Blush.
We offer a unique, personal service for our clients. The Best of British, everything is still formulated and hand blended in London. The Holy Grail for all women is finding the perfect foundation and this couldn’t be easier with our wide selection of skin-enhancing shades, textures, concealers and primers… a perfectly flawless complexion can be achieved to suit all desires and skin tones. Shades can be bought “à la carte” or custom blended on the spot for the perfect skin-match. For the ultimate in bespoke beauty, a unique “made-to-measure” shade can be created.
Our “Colour Creation” service means no more upset over discontinued or hard-to-find favourites - a lipstick, powder or eyeshadow can be brought back and recreated anew. Or for special occasions, a completely unique colour can be made-to-order to set off a party or wedding outfit to a tee. For delicate damsels, the “Allergy-Free” service is where our formulation expertise comes to the fore… Clients with known allergies can opt to have products formulated without the offending ingredients – gain without pain!
Our friendly team are all professionally trained make-up artists who like nothing better than to share their creative talents with clients, imparting hot tips and tricks of the trade and giving great colour advice. In a calm, discreet and unpressurised setting, visitors can benefit from a multitude of invaluable make-up artistry services and lessons. It goes without saying that a full bridal service is also available. We can even come to you. We recently launched our “On Call” service where we can come to your home or hotel suite for those extra special occasions. For those outside London, we have a select network of private make-up artists and salons around the country and offer an excellent online service.

SPAS & TREATMENTS: Covent Garden Dental Spa (29.05.09)
Location: Covent Garden Dental Spa, 68a Neal Street, Covent Garden, London
WC2H 9PA. 020 7836 9207. www.coventgardendentalspa.co.uk
Facilities: The Covent Garden Dental Spa is a new concept in dentistry, offering ‘dentistry with a pampering touch’. The spa’s aim is to change your outlook on dentistry and provide stress free dental care. Located right in the middle of the hustle of Covent Garden, the spa is a quiet, relaxing haven in stark contrast to most dental practices. The Dental Spa offers all the usual dental work and the latest dental techniques, with membership available for a monthly fee which includes check-ups, hygiene visits and discounts on any extra work. However, dentist Dr Flora Chigwedere also has a passion for cosmetic dentistry and creating a beautiful smile. Both in surgery and take home tooth whitening are available, as are a number of straightening techniques including Invisalign, the latest in cosmetic orthodontics.
Ambience: As soon as you enter the Dental Spa it is immediately clear that it is not your run of the mill dental surgery. There is no clinical white paint or fluorescent bulbs. In their place, are earth-hued walls, subtle lighting and mahogany floors. Bearing in mind that a large number of people find visiting the dentists a daunting experience, the emphasis is on making patients feel as comfortable as possible whether they’re there for a routine examination or wisdom tooth extraction. You can sit and relax on comfy chairs in reception sipping on a range of beverages, but the toast of the spa is its Relax and Massage Room, which patients can take advantage of prior to appointments. For the ultra nervous patients, the Dental Spa also offers hypnotherapy sessions. The top class treatment and Relax and Massage Room, alongside the tranquil atmosphere and friendly, considerate staff makes visiting this dentist a uniquely pleasurable experience and somewhere you can look forward to going back to.
Treatment: Whitening Take Home Treatment, £250 (Members benefit from 10% discount)
Dentist Flora initially assessed my teeth for their suitability for the tooth whitening process, and they were then cleaned and polished in preparation for the treatment. We then discussed what I hoped to get out of the treatment. We looked through a selection of coloured teeth, choosing the one nearest my teeth colour and then ‘before’ pictures were taken. Next moulds were taken of my teeth so that clear plastic trays, like gum shields, could be made. Once these were finished, after around two hours, I was given instructions and two syringes of peroxide gel. The treatment consisted of using 10% peroxide gel in the trays every night for a week and then using 16% gel for another week. I started to notice a change in my teeth colour after the first few days, which was great to see that it was working. After the two weeks of treatment my teeth were noticeably whiter, with people even commenting! I went back to the Dental Spa to take ‘After’ pictures. It was amazing to see how much whiter my teeth actually were!! The great thing about the treatment is the fact that any unused gel lasts up to 18 months in the fridge and you have the trays so can easily top up your whiteness before big events like weddings. Additionally, the Dental Spa offers ‘White for life’ which means patients who’ve undergone the treatment at the spa can get extra peroxide gel when needed.
Membership is £18 per month, with a First Assessment charge of £50, currently £25 until 12/06/2009.

Tried & Tested: FACE CREAMS WITH SPF (22.05.09)
Not wearing a face cream with SPF protection? It’s time you added one to your morning routine… We’ve tested six of the best...

CAUDALIE VINEXPERT RADIANCE DAY FLUID SPF10, £34.50 for 30ml (www.spacenk.co.uk)
What they say: Caudalie Vinexpert Radiance Day Fluid is an energising fluid with SPF 10 that helps to firm and protect, offering you anti-wrinkle action along with optimum moisture to give you a healthy, glowing complexion.
The Results: I hate wearing anything too heavy on my skin, as it’s prone to oiliness and breakouts. I liked this moisturiser – it’s got a lightweight texture and felt cooling and soothing as I applied it. Afterwards, my skin felt unbelievably soft – like velvet – and had a subtle sheen that reflected the light. I loved the fruity fragrance – it smelt like mandarins and made applying it a real pleasure. I’d happily swap my regular moisturiser for this product, so the fact it contains SPF is a happy bonus. It isn’t a large tube, but a little seems to go a long way.
Best for: Oily skin

HAMPTON SUN SUPER HYDRATING FACE CREAM SPF15, £35 for 50ml (www.spacenk.co.uk)
What they say: The advanced signature Vitamin formula with Botanical Extracts helps diminish the signs of premature aging with UVA/UVB protection and powerful anti-oxidants.
The Results: The white and gold packaging of this product is very chic – I could imagine it being pulled out of beach bags on the beaches of St Tropez and Nice. I liked the texture of this cream – thin, silky, and impressively quick to sink into the skin. I wasn’t sure about the fragrance at first – it smelt vaguely like almonds – but it disappeared almost instantly and left no trace on the skin. The product is designed for holidays, but I think it works equally well for daily use or to add sun protection to a regular moisturiser. It’s expensive, but also great quality – I’d be happy to invest.
Best for: The luxury choice

ELIZABETH ARDEN EIGHT HOUR CREAM INTENSIVE DAILY MOISTURISER SPF15, £22 for 50ml (Elizabeth Arden Counters Nationwide)
What they say: This daily hydrating lotion leaves skin feeling soft, smooth and moisturised for up to 8 hours. Protects skin from the effects of extreme weather and climate changes, while SPF15 protects skin from the harmful effects of the sun.
The Results: I always have a tube of Eight Hour Cream in my handbag to apply to dry patches of skin, my lips, and my cuticles – but I find it too heavy and greasy to use on my face. When I heard that the brand had launched a daily moisturiser, I was very keen to try it. I’m really impressed – the cream feels highly hydrating and nourishing, yet has none of the greasiness of the original cream. It feels light and fluffy as you massage it into your skin and leaves it looking plumped and feeling super-soft. The only downside is that it’s tempting to use a lot, as the cream is quite thick, so I think I’d get through the tube quite quickly. It’s worth it though – I’m a real fan and love the subtle hint of Eight Hour Cream’s original fragrance.
Best for: Hydrating skin

DERMALOGICA SHEER MOISTURISER SPF15, £23.30 for 40ml (0800 591818)
What they say: Natural Zinc Oxide minerals shield against sunlight and make skin radiant, while extracts from Olives and Walnut Seeds help improve skin texture. A full spectrum sunscreen provides daily solar defense.
The Results: This cream has a very thin texture, like a lotion, but absorbed almost instantly and left my skin feeling soft and moisturised. It had the luxurious scent of essential oils and contained very fine shimmer particles, which reflected the light to leave my skin looking glowing and radiant. My skin is prone to feeling dry and tight, so I tend to keep a tube of cream in my bag to top up during the day. I was impressed with this product, as my skin still felt nicely hydrated well into the afternoon. Plus, it was reassuring that it contained SPF15. I’ll definitely continue to use it.
Best for: Boosting radiance

CLINIQUE CITY BLOCK SHEER SPF25, £12.23 for 40ml (www.clinique.co.uk)
What they say: Sheer, high-level broad-spectrum UVA/UVB daily sun protection. Lightweight formula helps wick away perspiration and absorb excess oil so makeup looks fresher, longer.
The Results: This product has a light beige colour, like a foundation, which initially worried me as my skin is a lot darker. However, as soon as I smoothed it into my skin, it became translucent and did a great job at evening out my skin tone. It has quite an oily texture when it first comes out the tube, but sunk in very quickly without a trace of greasiness – in fact, it seems to absorb oil in my skin, leaving it looking matte and shine-free. I didn’t feel like I needed to wear foundation, so simply topped up with pressed powder – it provided a good base, as the powder stayed put for far longer than usual. It’s a great price, I was expecting it to cost quite a bit more.
Best for: A makeup base

BLISS BEST OF SKINTENTIONS DAILY MOISTURISER SPF15, £25 for 50ml (www.blisslondon.co.uk)
What they say: This daily moisturiser shields skin from sun damage, delivers essential vitamins, minerals and omegas, and illuminates skin with phytonutrients.
The Results: I have dry skin and use a thick, intensive moisturiser after cleansing leaves it feeling tight and uncomfortable. I was concerned about swapping to a different brand, but didn’t need to worry as I this is a great product. This cream feels quite thick, yet not at all greasy, and has a lovely fruity scent. It absorbed into my skin almost instantly, but left it feeling richly hydrated and super soft. I’ve been using it for a week now and my skin feels far more balanced. I’d highly recommend it.
Best for: Dry skin

Spas & Treatments: LIZ EARLE SIGNATURE FACIAL
(22.05.09)
Tested by Louise Emma Clarke
What it promises: Skincare expert Liz Earle has worked with leading facialist Arézoo Kaviani to develop a unique, personal, facial experience using her potent botanical Liz Earle Naturally Active Skincare range. Using a combination of traditional skincare techniques (including lymphatic drainage and manual extraction) plus intensive sequenced massage, the brand promises ‘outstanding results, whatever your skin type’.
What happens: Liz Earle’s flagship store is located a stone’s throw from Sloane Square tube station, just off London’s fashionable Kings Road. I arrived at the shop on a bright, sunny day and was welcomed at the spa reception, towards the back of the store, with a glass of ice-cold lemon water. The brightly lit shelves around me offered a tempting selection of Liz Earle products – and I couldn’t resist a little window-shopping before my therapist arrived to collect me. Leading me downstairs to the spa, the ambience suddenly became laid-back and serene, with Liz Earle’s signature green splashed across the walls and huge paintings of her beloved Isle of Wight (where she lives and works) at every turn. The treatment room smelt and looked stunning – I couldn’t wait to hop onto the large bed, with crisp white sheets and a deep fluffy pillow. The next 90 minutes were pure bliss – bar a little discomfort during the manual extraction, which is over in just a few minutes. My therapist’s hands danced silently over my skin, performing a vast array of techniques – lymphatic drainage, intensive massage, cleansing, toning, polishing, and hydrating. Towards the end of the treatment, while a mask worked its magic, I enjoyed a deep massage on my shoulders, scalp, and neck.
Results: I’ve tried my fair share of different facials in the past, after deciding aged 20 that I would treat my skin every month ongoing. I can safely say, however, that I have never ever jumped up from the treatment bed to discover skin that looked as plumped, radiant, and really rather perfect. I usually delve straight into my handbag for my mineral foundation and concealer before I can brave the outside world – but there was no need after this incredible treatment – my skin looked better than when I’d arrived with a full face of makeup. In the days afterwards, my skin felt smoother and more balanced, and looked far younger. I’d highly recommend booking yourself in for this treatment – before a special event, when your skin needs some serious attention, or simply when you fancy the ultimate beauty treat.
Price: £83 for 90 minutes
Location: Liz Earle Flagship Store, 38-39 Duke of York Square, King’s Road, London SW3. 0207 8817750. http://uk.lizearle.com

Blog: DR RAVI JAIN – MEDICAL DIRECTOR OF RIVERBANKS CLINIC – PICKS 20 COSMETIC TREATMENTS WE CAN FIT INTO OUR LUNCHBREAKS (22.05.09)
Patients are opting for less radical cosmetic treatments in order to reduce the time taken off work to recover due to fear of losing their jobs in the recession. I’ve explained the top 20 treatments that you can now do in your lunch hour below…
1) Frown reducing treatment with Botox - There are two types of ‘frown’ lines commonly present between the eyebrows: those that only appear with expression (dynamic), and those that are present all the time (static). Dynamic eyebrow lines can be treated with muscle-relaxing injections such as botox, to achieve a subtle, natural look.
2) Botox brow lift - Botox is used to improve the overall shape of your eyebrow. By generating a very subtle change (as little as a few millimetres), a noticeable, natural improvement to your appearance can be made.
3) Y-lift – cheek filling with dermal fillers - Dermal fillers such as Restylane or Juvederm Ultra can take years off someone’s face in under an hour and there is no downtime. Fillers can restore volume to cheeks, folds, creases and cheeks and lips and restore that triangle of youth.
4) Lip enhancements - The upper lip can be gently treated with ‘dots’ of anti-wrinkle dermal fillers or Botox, for an instantly more luscious look. Results are totally natural, lasting between 6-9 months with dermal fillers such as Restylane and Juvéderm® Ultra, and 3 – 4 months with Botox.
5) Crow’s feet - Crows’ Feet are the lines and wrinkles around the outside of the eye, often present when you smile or squint (dynamic). As we age, or succumb to the effects of sun damage or smoking, these lines become more permanent (static). Dynamic crows’ feet are best treated with muscle-relaxing injections such as botox.
6) Macrolane breast augmentation - Macrolane, is an injectable breast implant which can boost a woman’s bust. The typical boost is from an A to a B or a B to a C.
7) Sclerotherapy of threadveins - Sclerotherapy is best for treating thread veins ON THE LEGS. Using a fine needle, a sclerosing solution is injected, making vein walls stick together and close off. Compression stockings are worn for a week and treated vessels gradually fade.
8) IPL for Roseaca and sun damage - The signs and effects of Rosacea can be significantly reduced, using a combination of Priori Advanced AHA skin products including non-invasive IPL laser treatment. IPL is also very good for sun damage as the darker areas of sun damage absorb the intense light.
9) Hand rejuvenation with Radiesse - Radiesse, which works by stimulating the skin to encourage collagen to re-grow, can also be used for instant hand wrinkle-reducing results. Some local anaesthetic is mixed into the Radiesse and then injected into the back of the hands. Massage is then applied by the doctor and you have instant hand rejuvenation. Results are FANTASTIC, and patients report back high rates of satisfaction.
10) Lift those lines with dermal fillers - Dermal fillers work to mimic the skin’s production of collagen to ‘plump up’ and fill out lines or depressions in the skin, or hollows in areas such as the cheeks, for a fresher, more toned and youthful appearance. This improvement in overall skin surface quality acts to re-elasticate the contours of the face, for a non-surgical ‘lift’ that is highly effective, but nonetheless subtle and natural.
11) Diamondtome Microdermabrasion with Omnilux phototherapy – This stimulates collagen production to promote the growth of healthy new cells. There is no downtime making this an ideal quick skin pick-me-up.
12) Treat excessive sweating with Botox - Botox injections have been used with almost 100% success to treat Hyperhidrosis for several years now. On average the effects last for 6 months.
13) Relieve tension headaches with Botox – Botox has been shown to be a very effective treatment for tension headaches and neck stiffness. The botox is injected in to the pain areas with a very fine needle and after a few days, the muscles will start to relax and so relieve the tension and thus the pain. Usually requires about two treatments a year.
14) Mole/skin tag removal – get rid of those unsightly skin tags/moles with simple laser surgery. Wounds heal in a few days and the procedure can easily be fitted into your lunch hour.
15) Tummy tightening with Accent Spa RF - Accent Spa RF can give instant skin tightening with absolutely no downtime. A course of 4 -6 weeks is usually required for the face and takes about an hour each time.
16) Painless laser hair removal - Usually between 4-8 sessions will be required on fair skin and dark hair. Permanent removal is now considered not to be possible with ANY system. It’s more like Permanent Hair reduction with maybe one top-up treatment a year with the gap getting bigger thereafter.
17) Lift those mouth corners with Botox & dermal fillers - Lip and mouth lines can be treated with dermal fillers for an instantly revitalised look, although muscle-relaxing treatments such as Botox are particularly effective ways of correcting downward-pointing mouth corners and reducing creases in the longer term.
18) Teeth whitening in 45 mins with Zoom - The Zoom! teeth whitening system: Takes just 45 minutes, makes your teeth at least 8 shades lighter, gives you immediate results, is long lasting with very little fading and is safe and comfortable.
19) Advanced Lactic Acid Skin peel - An Advanced AHA skin peel is ideal for sun-damaged skin, or certain kinds of acne, pigmentation issues or fine wrinkling around the mouth and eyes. The process is less aggressive than some chemical peels, but nonetheless highly effective. The peel generally causes some flaking, redness and dryness, as the old skin gives way to fresh, young skin. However unlike harsher THC peels, the much milder side effects diminish within a day or two. Once the body heals itself naturally, the outer layer of skin exfoliates, with patients usually able to engage in normal activities within 24 hours.
20) SmartXide DOT therapy to the décolleté & face - SmartXide DOT therapy can reduce fine lines and wrinkles, tighten the skin and even out skin tones. Redness may last between 1-2 days, but can be covered up with makeup. Younger, fresher, tighter skin is something surgery cannot offer, so we often improve upon the results of surgery.

Breaking News: COWSHED LAUNCHES MATERNITY AND BABY RANGE (22.05.09)
We’ve often wondered why there are so few luxury maternity and baby ranges in the beauty industry – after all, there are few people who are more in need of a pampering treat. With the birth rate going up – over 750,000 babies were born in the UK last year – spa brand Cowshed have launched a Maternity and Baby range that will be the pride of every women’s dressing table and every baby’s changing mat. Mothers instinctively want the best for their baby – whether that’s during pregnancy, as their bodies respond to the changes, or after birth when they need to trust the products that they use on the new, delicate skin. Cowshed’s new range is formulated with premium, natural ingredients that are free from parabens and other ingredients that can be potentially harmful to both mother and baby. True to the Cowshed heritage, each product is beautifully packaged and would make a gorgeous gift. The Udderly Gorgeous Maternity range includes Stretch Mark Balm (£20), Stretch Mark Oil (£18), Leg & Foot Treatment (£18), Bath Salts (£24) and Bath & Shower Gel (£16). Feature: BRIDAL BEAUTY (22.05.09)
Calling all wedding belles. Whether you are the bride-to-be or just gearing up for all the summer nuptials, we’ve got the foolproof fast-track way to ensure all eyes are on you.

INSIDE OUT
It is no surprise to learn that looking good is as much about the inside as the outside. Cutting down on calories and alcohol, as well as exercising more can help, but often it is difficult to get to the root of those nagging issues.
The Organic Pharmacy offers a thorough Health Assessment to uncover the underlying causes of those breakouts or that bloated stomach, rather than just the symptoms. For five minutes you are strapped up to a Quantum QXCI Machine, which sends a painless electric current through the body. It can identify more than 4,000 items including food intolerances, stomach disorders, emotional wellbeing and vitamin deficiencies. It is a fantastic MOT to kickstart your regime, £150 for a 90 minute consultation (020 7351 2232)

SPOIL YOURSELF
It is always important to take time out but never more so than in the run up to a wedding. It sounds simple, but a relaxing bath is one of the most effective ways to stimulate the nervous system, relax muscles and give an all-round feeling of wellbeing. So why not transform your bathroom into your very own personal spa?
Run a hot bath, the optimum temperature is around 38-40 degrees, turn off your mobile and lock the door. Rather than splashing out on expensive salon treatments, invest in delicious scented candles, Diptyque’s at Space NK are always delicious (www.spacenk.co.uk), a sumptuous body wash - E.Coudray’s Foaming Cream is fit for a princess, £25 (Fortnum & Mason, 020 7734 8040) – and oodles of bath oil. Miller Harris has two glorious scented bath oils, the evocative Terre de Bois or the classic Fleur Oriental, that are moisturising too - and savour an hour of pure wallowing, £28 (www.millerharris.com).

FROM TIP TO TOE:
There is nothing quite like prettily painted, perfectly shaped nails, to make you look, and feel, groomed. French manicures, with their obvious white tips, are anything but chic. Choose an elegant neutral pink instead.
Essie has just launched the perfect bridal nail range with adorable names like Happily Ever After, Blushing Bride and Cloud Nine. The delicate pinks and elegant nudes will ensure the perfect finish and you can be sure the colour will really last. £8.95 each, or £15.95 for a mini-pack (www.nailsbymail.co.uk)

SAVING FACE:
All those wedding photos require peachy-perfect skin, so remember to begin prepping early. Cut down on sugary snacks, refined carbs and salt - all of which take the glow out of your skin - and treat yourself to Bliss’ Triple Oxygen Instant Energizing Mask, £39 (www.blissworld.com).
For any last minute break-outs, the Harley Street Skin’s Renewal gel is great for zapping away any pimples overnight. It stings for a few seconds but really works, £25 (www.harleystreetskin.co.uk).
With the base sorted, aim for fresh and youthful makeup in spring’s prettiest petal shades. Try Paul & Joe’s pink and chocolate Eye Colour Palette, £28 (www.paul-joe-beaute.com) delicate blush with Nars Multiple Duo in Orgasm/South Beach, £33 (www.narscosmetics.co.uk) and Laura Mercier’s Secret Camouflage to conceal any blemishes, £26.91 (www.spacenk.co.uk).
Then for a foolproof holiday glow, try By Terry’s Bronze-Expert smoothing, lifting, gel-bronzer that comes in an easy-to use brush applicator to stop you going too St Tropez, £39 (www.spacenk.com). And if you suffer from oily patches, Sisley’s Instant Perfect mattifier is excellent. Use it before you apply your makeup and after as a touch-up, et voila, £36 (0207 591 6380)

LOVELY LOCKS:
To ensure your hair is the mane attraction, it is a good idea to get regular trims at least six months in advance and to get into the habit of using a great shampoo and conditioner. Aveda is top of every beauty editor’s list (www.aveda.co.uk).
If you are wearing your hair up, it will be much easier to style if you wash it the night before. If your hair is mid-length to long, a low, side bun is one of the easiest and most elegant styles to do yourself. Begin by side-parting your hair, then secure it in a ponytail and twist until it curls up on itself. Then loosely fix the ends with Kirby grips in an artfully haphazard style.
Finally, give your hair a spritz of dazzling shine with James Brown’s Shine & Fragrance Mist, £5.86 (www.boots.com). Alternatively, if you prefer something even more low-maintenance you could opt for a simple blow-dry and one of Jonny Loves Rosie’s charming hair accessories (www.johnnylovesrosie.co.uk)

CARRY IT OFF IN STYLE:
Finally, don’t spoil all your hard work by lugging a handbag stuffed with beauty products. Edit down to the absolute essentials and make sure each one is as beautiful as you are.
Rouge G de Guerlain lipstick comes in an impossibly glamorous mirror compact that is perfect for quick touch-ups, plus the light-reflecting colour is incredibly hydrating, £25 (01932 233 887). And, when it comes to compacts, nothing could be more elegant than one of Dolce & Gabbana’s new gold range. The Perfect Finish Wet or Dry foundation, £33, and the Smooth Eye Colour Duos, offer excellent coverage and colour in style, £22 (www.dolcegabbanamakeup.com).
So all that’s left is to remember the easiest bridal beauty tip of all - don’t forget to stand up straight. Good posture is the single most effective and affordable way to shed pounds and look great on your big day.

Spa Review: THE RITUAL ROOMS, LONDON (15.05.09)
Location: 13 New Quebec Street, Portman Village, London W1H 7R. 020 7724 3884. www.ritualrooms.com
Facilities: This all-singing, all-dancing pamper parlour isn’t just your every day, run-of-the-mill salon experience. Yes it offers hair and beauty treatments – doesn’t everywhere these days, and yes – they’re all performed under one roof, but where the Ritual Rooms differs, is that they’re all carried out in one room, on a one-to-one basis. Forget about being dragged from pillar to post with your hair in a towel, or trying to read a magazine with wet nails while your hair dye develops, an afternoon here is all about taking time out so you can enjoy being pampered and indulged in private. With just three treatment rooms, all customised to your every need, expect everything from wardrobe, changing area and mirrors, to sink, shower room and massage bed, all decorated in gorgeous chocolate browns and calming vanilla creams. Not that you’d realise there were any treatment rooms at all from peering in at street-level, as they’re hidden discreetly downstairs. Upstairs, you’ll simply find the reception area complete with homely wooden desk, and neatly-arranged shelves full of the signature products used in the treatments.
Ambience: The relaxing interior makes everything feel inviting and although you have to announce your arrival via a doorbell, this is purely because the treatment rooms (and therefore therapists) are downstairs. This is a real retreat, despite being just minutes away from Marble Arch and the hordes of shoppers making a beeline for Primark. From the moment you step foot inside, you’ll find yourself reluctant to return to the madness that awaits you on the city streets.
Treatment Tested: Aromatherapy Associates Anti-Cellulite Ritual, £75 for one hour
The ideal pre-summer treatment, if you’re looking to reduce that orange peel or say goodbye to cellulite for good, this one’s for you. Beginning with an invigorating body brush to enliven the skin and get the toxins moving, you’ll realise in the first few seconds that this treatment won’t be sending you to sleep. Focusing on the thigh and buttock area – hot spots for stubborn cellulite - once the deep tissue massage starts, don’t be surprised if your face muscles start getting their own workout too – a little grimace goes a long way when a therapist is trying to smooth out those lumps and bumps! More uncomfortable than painful, if you follow the ‘no pain, no gain’ ethos, you’ll be in your element. However, before you know it, your freshly-rubbed bits will be wrapped in cooling mud to firm and tone the skin, while your feet get treated to a reflex pressure massage. And there’s no denying the immediate results either. As soon as the mud was off and the legs were out, you could visibly see a reduction in cellulite, proving that with the recommended course of five treatments, it’s a definite beach body saviour. And if it is a beautified bikini bod you’re after, look out for their SOS Beach Babe Ritual (£250 for four hours). Not only do you get a one hour deep cleanse back treatment, you also get to choose from three of the following – leg wax, bikini wax, underarm wax, eyelash tinting, eyebrow shape mini manicure or mini pedicure; perfect if you’ve left your holiday grooming until the last minute.

Blog: JAMES YORK – OUR NEW GROOMING EDITOR – GIVES HIS VERDICT ON CHAMPNEY’S RANGE FOR MEN (15.05.09)
Male hunter-gatherer instincts demand efficiency - and fast. After all, we still have rounds of golf, threads, and a social life with our other halves to pay for - all of which are far more tangible than reduced eye puffiness. In this regard, the Champney’s range does nothing but surprise. Product packaging is consistent, debonair, and slickly presented. The range seems to be clearly influenced by Clinique For Men (a personal favourite), which is a good sign. The packaging is unfussy and clearly named - we males don’t want to have to figure out what to do with a grooming product, so this adds value.
Energising Hair and Body Wash, £5 for 200ml.
VERDICT: **** STARS
This achieves what few shower “2 in 1” solutions have managed - it lasts. Twenty showers later, using it for barnet and body, the thing is still fairly full. It smells great and does actually provide that sensual ‘kick’ it boasts about. The citrus essential oils (I smell no orange) are neatly disguised and subtle. It’s definitely manly alright and the fact that I wouldn’t have to wander around the supermarket shampoo section, clueless about shine, repair and dandruff options, is a bonus. The price is just about spot on, with a great smell and if it was in a tin, it would do exactly what it said on it! My only criticism would be that an over zealous squeeze might cost a few quid.
Skin Protecting Shave Cream, £5 for 100ml.
VERDICT: ** STARS
Yes, yes, it contains Aloe Vera and Tea Tree Oil, which this male groomer now knows will help sooth blemishes and aid Native American hangovers. The problem with this product is that it’s too small. I shave a lot, so why put this product in a smaller package than the shower gel? Depending on the shaving habits of the man, a Monday morning shave with a weekend of stubble is going to need a pretty sizeable portion of this product. It doesn’t spread very well or foam up as well as it claims, but once on it does a good job. Fragrance and anti irritation score good marks and it doesn’t clog up the Wilkinson Sword too badly at all. If I were to buy this product, I would want more of it as it doesn’t differ hugely enough from other products out there.
Anti Perspirant Deodorant Spray, £4 for 150ml.
VERDICT: *** STARS
This is a good product; it has a good sized packaging and carries the slickness of the range very well. Deodorant is a flagship product for a man. He can substitute shower gel for soap, shaving for stubble; but he cannot smell bad for the world. An initial pre-spray whiff might be mistaken for a cheaper spray, as it has a slightly Victorian nose, but it is definitely a grower. Masculine and sophisticated, using this even on a hot day, of which there have been many lately, the fragrance remained excellent. Its anti-perspirant power, as with all deodorants; is relative, it depends on the man. This is a good all-round option and stands up well against a Ted Baker solution of this class. Good price, simple packaging- old school is good school.

FROM CATWALK TO MAKEUP BAG
Inject a sprinkle of high-fashion into your makeup bag this season, by taking inspiration from the hues and textures of Spring/Summer’s biggest catwalk shows. Fashion writer Lara Myall talks us through the runway’s hottest looks…

VERSACE
From catwalk: For Spring/Summer 2009 the Milanese atelier served up a selection of wardrobe staples in an array of mouth-watering shades. High-waisted trousers cropped just below the knees, worn with diaphanous silk tops and tailored blazers provided the perfect daywear for the Italian lady. But it was the candy coloured frockery that stole the show… As always, Donatella made her sensual stamp on eveningwear and packed a pretty punch with delicious shades of Strawberry Dacquiri, Sirop au Citron and Crème de Menthe on strapless, one-shoulder, asymmetric and often belted cocktail dresses. The clothes’ sorbet shades provided the perfect backdrop for the show’s doll-like makeup. Sheer porcelain skin, smouldering eyes and pert pink pouts dominated. The models’ super-shiny, super-straight hair was centre-parted and combed back into sleek ponytails, which sat at the nape the neck.
To makeup bag:
- Dip your toes into the season’s sunshine shades with Nails Inc’s citrus Nail Varnish in Long Acre, £10.50 (020 7529 2340).
- For intense eyes à la Versace indulge in Chanel’s Les 4 Ombres de Chanel Palette in Smoky Eyes, £33 (020 7493 5040).
- Give yourself a tintillating flush with Nars Blush in Orgasm, £18.50 (0870 169 9999).
- Complete the look with a matt pink lipstick such as Chantecaille’s Matte Lipstick in Framboise, £9.79 (www.spacenk.co.uk)

CHRISTIAN DIOR
From catwalk: Described as “Africa parading up Avenue Montaigne”, John Galliano sent an army of Glamazons down the runway to present the Dior collection. Initially Galliano played it safe with traditional safari shades, such as camel on short sleeved, belted jackets and chiffon skirts, followed by a sheer, nude slip dress. A spate of monochrome dresses lifted the mood while a geranium pink strapless frock and orange chiffon mini-dress captured the true spirit of summer. But Galliano’s wild card took the form of a tango-tastic python coat worn over a ruffled lemon dress. The makeup, courtesy of beauty veteran Pat McGrath, was sympathetic to the clothes’ bold vibrancy. Earthy tones of mocha and olive accentuated the models’ eyes while strong, regal brows sharpened their facial features. Cheekbones were enhanced by a pinkish, pearlescent highlighter and lips intensified with a rich chocolate gloss. The sculptural feel continued with conical-shaped hair and faux, ultra-straight bangs keeping the look fresh and youthful.
To makeup bag:
- For the ultimate false-lash effect use Diorshow Iconic Mascara in Black £19.50 (020 7216 0216).
- Highlight cheekbones, forehead and the bridge of your nose with Touche Magique by L’Oréal Paris, £6.99 (www.lorealparis.co.uk/)
- Invest in an Eyebrow Shaping Pencil by Estée Lauder, £12.23 (0870 034 2566) to tame, define and give the illusion of a fuller brow.
- Finish with a high-lacquer lipgloss, like DiorKiss in Chocolate Shake, £14.50 (020 7216 0216) for guaranteed Glamazon membership.

MODERNIST
From catwalk: Inspired by a modern day trousseau, Andrew Jones and Abdul Koroma, the design duo behind the Modernist label, championed the breakthrough colour of the season – purple. Permutations of the regal colour appeared throughout, with diluted shades of violet on both simple jersey dresses and oversized, corsage neckpieces, and lilac tulip skirts, offset by sheer, cream tops and matching cocktail gloves. Darker hues of mauve appeared on semi-sheer, body con dresses. Black was interspersed and teamed with ultra violet cigarette pants and taffeta skirts but the colour reigned in its true glory, alone, on decorative, hand-embroidered dresses. The colour scheme flowed through to the makeup. Complexions were dewy and natural, and complemented by a light dusting of lilac eyeshadow on the upper lid and under the eye. Lips were painted with a similar shade of lilac and layered with a high-shine, transparent gloss. Wet look hair tied tightly back off the face and fashioned into a low bun gave a boyish slant to the Modernist look.
To makeup bag:
- Use a light-reflecting foundation such as Lancôme’s Photogenic Luminescence, £26.50 (www.lancome.co.uk) for a dewy base.
- Violet virgins should experiment with nail polish. Try a pretty pastel shade like Mavala’s Violette, £3.66 (01732 459 412) or go metallic with Nubar’s Nail Varnish in Pasadena Purple, £8 (www.cultbeauty.co.uk).
- For luscious lavender lips wear Barry M’s Lip Paint in Lavender 143, £4.25 (www.barrym.com).

RODARTE
From catwalk: Laura and Kate Mullavny, the designers of the Rodarte line, cited skeletons, Star Wars and the colours of the cosmos as their inspirations for Spring/Summer 2009. A bizarre concoction perhaps, but it does explain the heavily deconstructured nature of their designs. Staunch purveyors of the season’s ‘new nude’ trend, the majority of pieces were natural coloured with sporadic accents of electric blue, tangerine, midnight blue, black and violet. The latter colours appeared simultaneously, as if painted, on toga-style mini dresses worn with cut-out, cobweb leggings, and on beautiful, diaphanous maxi dresses. Orange, however, was the only colour to be used on the face in a look that make-up artist, James Kaliandos described as, “A monochromatic, couture face … inspired by the man who fell to earth, David Bowie.” Eyelids were daubed with acid orange MAC eye pigment and blended with a lip pencil to the brow line. MAC’s sculpt and shape foundation was applied in a shade paler than the models’ natural skin tone and a Dusty Coral MAC Pro Paint stick was pushed into the lips to complete the look.
To makeup bag:
- Experiment with flashes of colour on your eyelids. A subtle flick of Barry M’s Liquid Eyeliner in Mermaid Green or Pink, £4.50 each (www.asos.com) will bring out your eyes and tick the colour splash trend.
- Or copy the catwalk look with MAC’s Acid Orange Eye Pigment, £14.68 (020 7534 9222).
- Paint your lips in a ladylike shape with Elizabeth Arden’s 4G Exceptional Lipstick in Marigold, £15 (020 7574 2722).

LOUIS VUITTON
From catwalk: Marc Jacobs gave a rousing response to the stealth wealth climate with his interpretation of the “New African Queen” for Louis Vuitton. With eclectic references ranging from the 1920’s and 1940’s through to ethnic influences, the result was as rich and extravagant as its inspiration. Green and orange, feathered gilets cinched in with obi-sash belts punked up the traditional tribal style and made an overtly feminine statement. But overall, bold block colour was key to the collection. Burnt orange and claret featured on dresses, while bottle green appeared on sharp shouldered tops and accents of purple on jackets and boleros. The beauty looks were equally severe but unashamedly modern. Hair was slicked back tightly, pulled through LV-monogrammed hair tubes and then exploded into a back-combed mass. Skin was flawless, and left au naturel with a hint of soft rose blush. Black kohl and a hint of metallic green were applied heavily around the eyes to give a dramatic, gothic feel while a slick of blood red lipstick lent a vampish edge to an all-round opulent look.
To makeup bag:
- For dramatic eyes draw a thick line around your eyes with Benefit’s Bad Gal Eyeliner, £12.50 (0808 238 0230) and smudge.
- Press Prescriptives’ U Pick Eye Colour in Storm, £8.81 (0870 034 2566) across the upper eyelid.
- To eliminate colour bleed or smudging, always line and define your lips first. Try Laura Mercier’s Long Wear Lip Pencil in Rosewood, £14.68 (www.spacenk.com).
- Go glam goth with Too Faced’s Lip of Luxury Smoothing Lipstick in Sex Kitten, £12 (020 7963 2000)

GIORGIO ARMANI

From catwalk:
Giorgio Armani whisked us away to the Mediterranean with a sensual collection of lust-worthy, luxurious staples. The designer’s signature tailoring conjured up instant Rivierawear and appeared in several guises, from silk short suits to a preppy striped blazer. His standout pieces included a gunmetal parachute silk jumpsuit that screamed Studio 54 and Casino-perfect evening gowns with lashings of beads and sequins. The pastel colour palette was subtle and soft, featuring a sea of maritime shades, oyster and bronze that complimented the sinuous fabrics.

Makeup wise, eyes were lined with intense blue and aqua green and contrasted with beige satin lip wax. A bronzed but dewy base gave a sunkissed look whilst wavy, sea hair was left to hang loosely and frame the face.
To makeup bag:
- Transform yourself into the ultimate bronzed goddess with Giorgio Armani’s Bronze Mania Mediterranean Body Tint, £30 (0207 318 2486).
- Line eyes (top and bottom) with GOSH’s Tropical Eye Pencil in Aqua Life. £4.40 (020 8684 7000) and blend for pretty peepers.
- Sue Devitt’s nifty little compact Eye Palettes in Green Isles and Blue Waters, £30 (0207 201 8687) fit the eyeshadow bill.
- Beige lips lent a soft Seveties vibe to the Armani look. To get the look wear Shu Uemura’s Rouge Unlimited Crystal Shine in Beige 901, £16.15 (www.spacenk.com).

Tried & Tested: CORAL MAKEUP (15.05.09)
We’ve tested six different cosmetics in this summer’s hottest hue.

CHANEL LE VERNIS NAIL COLOUR IN ORANGE FIZZ, £16 (020 7493 3836)
First impressions: A generous bottle of nail varnish, in Chanel’s signature black and gold packaging. The shade is a subtle and muted coral.
The Results: I was impressed with this nail varnish. One coat is all that’s required for a really strong colour, which cut down painting time. I think coral colours generally look better on darker skins, but the lighter tone of this polish suited my pale skin perfectly. It will look equally good when I have a bit of a tan later in the summer – especially when worn on toes on holiday. The colour chipped after a few days on my fingers, so next time I will definitely finish with a good topcoat. I’d recommend this product for anyone who wants to try out the coral trend, but is a bit daunted by bright colours.
Best for: Pale skin tones

BENEFIT CORALISTA, £24.50 (www.benefitcosmetics.co.uk)
First impressions: Fun packaging, containing a coral pink powder to sweep over cheekbones. A brush is included.
The Results: This blusher looks very bright in the packaging, so I was worried that I’d end up looking a bit orange when I applied it. I was wrong though – I swept it across my cheekbones with the brush and it instantly perked up my complexion, without looking too lurid or bright. It would look amazing with a tan, but would work equally well on pale skin. The colour is very fresh and summery – the perfect companion to balmy evenings out and trips to sunnier climes. I love the quirky packaging too - plus it has a gorgeous fruity scent.
Best for: Boosting radiance

CLARINS PERFECT SHINE SHEER LIPSTICK IN PAPAYA, £14.19 (http://uk.clarins.com)
First impressions: A coral-coloured lipstick with a touch of shimmer, contained in sleek silver tubing. A tempting fruity fragrance.
The Results: This lipstick has the texture of a gloss and left my lips feeling moisturised and silky smooth. As the product name suggests, the colour was very sheer and the shimmer was subtle. I have dark skin and the colour really suited my skin tone, but it may be a little too orange for paler skins. I’d take this on holiday and wear it around the pool and in the evening, as it would work well with a natural, understated look. I usually find that glosses wear off very quickly – especially when I’m eating and drinking – but was very impressed with the staying power of this product.
Best for: Darker skin tones

RMK INGENIOUS POWDER EYES IN APRICOT, £15.65 (0161 629 1176)
First impressions: A simple, yet stylish silver compact containing a shimmering coral-coloured eye shadow. A brush applicator and mirror is included.
The Results: I’ve always been a fan of the colour coral, but have never braved an eyeshadow as I thought the red-tones would be unflattering to my pale skin. I’m pleased I was asked to test this product, as I’ve since found out that the colour adds warmth to my complexion, which is great for the summer months. The texture of the eyeshadow was smooth and velvety, with a slight shimmer. The biggest plus point for me was how quick and easy it was to apply - it glides on easily and gives a lovely wash of colour with just a few sweeps of the brush.
Best for: Ease of use

BY TERRY GLOSS DELECTATION IN MANDARINA PSCHITT, £25 (www.spacenk.co.uk)
First impressions: Bright coral-orange lip gloss in a chunky metallic purple and clear tube. The gloss is thick and has a fruity fragrance.
The Results: This gloss isn’t for the faint hearted – the colour is neon bright in the tube and just as colourful on the lips! It looks amazing on dark skin, but paler skin tones could definitely get away with it on holiday once they have a slight tan. The texture was thick and sticky, which doesn’t make it ideal for nights out eating or sipping drinks, but does mean it has impressive staying power. It felt amazing on my lips and smelt delicious - it was very tempting to keep reapplying through the evening.
Best for: Bright colour

POP BLUSH CAKE IN ‘WARM IN SIENNA’, £12 (www.popbeauty.co.uk)
First impressions: A large silver pot containing five different shades of coral-coloured blusher. Brush needs to be purchased separately.
The Results: This pot of blusher looks fantastic – almost too good to use! I swept the brush over the five different stripes to collect a little of each shade and applied it to my cheekbones in large sweeps. The result was a pretty pink-coral blush, with a touch of subtle shimmer – much more natural than I expected. It’s a very feminine, warm shade and would suit every skin tone. The only downside is having to buy a brush separately – but on the plus side, the pot is so large that it would last and last.
Best for: Natural colour

Spas & Treatments: CAREY’S MANOR AND SENSPA, NEW FOREST (08.05.09)
Visited by Louise Emma Clarke
Location: Carey’s Manor and Senspa, Brockenhurst, New Forest, Hampshire, SO42 7RH. 01590 623551. www.careysmanor.com
Facilities: When it comes to settings, it’s hard to imagine anything more peaceful and picturesque than Carey’s Manor. On the edge of the small village of Brockenhurst, the striking red brick façade is situated deep within the New Forest. The hotel boasts three restaurants and 80 comfortable rooms overlooking the immaculate grounds - and unsurprisingly does a roaring trade in weddings during the summer months. The jewel in this hotel’s crown is undoubtedly the Thai-themed Senspa – a welcome sanctuary for those seeking a little ‘me time’. Step into the spa and you’ll quickly grasp why Carey’s Manor was recently named Hotel Spa of the Year at the British Beauty Awards – there is so much to do here, you’ll need a whole day to make the most of the luxurious facilities. Highlights include a large Hydrotherapy Pool to pummel and soothe muscles with jets of water, a Herbal Sauna, a Crystal Steam Room, a selection of Experience Showers (we urge you to try the Sea Storm Shower, with its lightning flashes and refreshing sea spray), and a relaxing Laconicum. Comfort is the priority here, with guests handed Thai silk pyjamas and a fluffy robe on arrival. The tempting treatment menu includes a selection of traditional and more unique therapies, with 16 luxurious treatment rooms and heated Hammam rooms. After dinner and a peaceful night’s sleep in the ultra-comfortable rooms, spa break guests can eat in the light, airy Zen Garden restaurant. A breakfast menu, which includes eggs benedict and smoked salmon with scrambled eggs, feels more like you’re eating at a trendy London eatery than a hotel nestled deep in the New Forest.
Ambience: Whilst the hotel itself feels very quiet and unpopulated – the only time I bumped into other guests was at dinner – the Senspa was buzzing throughout my stay. The ambience of the spa is relaxed, yet there’s no pressure to keep your voice down. Visiting with a friend would be ideal, as you can chat away without feeling that you’re disturbing other guests. Those seeking peace and quiet can retreat to the Relaxation Room, where it takes seconds to drift into a contented sleep on the heated beds.
Treatment tested: Moroccan Hammam Massage, £80 for 1 hour
I’ve enjoyed my fair share of facials and body treatments in the past, so was pleased to find something a little different on the Senspa treatment menu. I took advantage of the spa’s famous Moroccan Hammam Massage, which took place in a room above the Hydrotherapy Pool. I was worried that the hard bed would be uncomfortable, but the heated tiles were surprisingly comfortable and I felt relaxed within seconds. The therapist began massaging the silky Rhassoul mud over my body using a variety of different strokes and techniques to soothe and calm. The mud contained very gentle exfoliators to buff and polish my skin. She then switched on the shower above the mud to cleanse my skin – the sensation of lying on a bed with water splashing down onto me was a strange one, but the tiles were so warm and comforting that I never felt cold or unsettled. The therapist concluded the treatment by moisturising my skin with a silky oil, leaving it feeling velvety soft.
Spa Breaks at Carey’s Manor start at £189 per person, including one night’s luxury accommodation, dinner, full use of spa facilities, mind & body class, authentic Thai lunch, and at least one treatment.

Blog: MAKEUP ARTIST JEMMA KIDD FILLS US IN ON THE INSPIRATION BEHIND HER LATEST COLLECTION, HER TOP TIPS FOR SPRING/SUMMER 09, AND HER CAREER HIGHLIGHTS (08.05.09)

What are your current favourite products and why?
My JKMS Mineral Skin Nourishing Tint SPF 20. It has a very light, sheer formula which gives added hydration to the skin and protects from the sun. I call it no make-up, make-up. I also love Zelens eye cream, I use it every night. It is really hydrating and has made the fine lines around my eyes much less noticeable. I am never without my JKMS Lasting Tint Semi-permanent lash colour and have also recently discovered the brand La Roche Posay – their Lipikar body milk is fabulous!
What was your inspiration for the s/s 09 Jemma Kid Makeup School line?
Tropicana – I was inspired by my childhood in Barbados and have incorporated nude lipsticks, apricot blushes and coral glosses.
Can you suggest a flattering way to wear this Tropicana look?
If you are feeling confident, apply a wash of vivid colour over the whole eye. To achieve a strong, bold colour – layer a powder shadow on top of a crème shadow. Another option is to draw along the upper lash line using a bold coloured liner and then add lashings of black mascara to the top and bottom lashes to tone down the brightness. Alternatively keep the eyes nude and natural and opt for bright coral or pink lips.
Top tips
• Don’t forget the basics. Taking the time to properly exfoliate and moisturise the skin will make a huge difference and perfect skin cannot be achieved without these basic preparations to remove dead skin cells and hydrate the skin. Follow with tinted moisturiser as it will get rid of any uneven skin tone whilst providing a natural finish.
• It’s really important not to follow trends that don’t suit you.
• Less is more. Make up should be used to accentuate your best features rather than being used as a mask.
• Maintaining the brows is often overlooked; shaped tidy brows really make a difference to your look. If they are too heavy they can make the eyes look smaller and sunken and if they are too thin they can be ageing.
• When applying dramatic eye make-up always do your eyes first before applying foundation. That way you avoid dropping flecks of eye shadow onto the cheeks and ruining the rest of your make-up.

What is the best way to choose the right foundation to match your skin tone?
The best foundation should match your skin completely and look like you are not wearing any but just have fabulous flawless skin. If you cannot find the perfect shade, buy one slightly lighter than your natural skin tone and one slightly darker. Then mix these to match your skin tone. Make sure that you apply the foundation in a natural light to get the best colour match. In addition, ensure that you allow time for your moisturizer to sink in before applying your foundation.
What are your tips for combating dull, sallow skin and transforming it back to a fresh faced glow.
To bring your skin back to life you need to focus on your skincare regime and diet as well as your make up. Ensure you drink plenty of water and eat a healthy diet including lots of fruit and vegetables. As we age our skin’s ability to renew itself slows down which means that dead skin cells are left sitting on the surface of the skin for longer, creating a dull and lifeless complexion. One way to tackle this is to gently massage a facial scrub into your skin between cleansing and moisturising. How frequently you should use a facial scrub will vary depending on your skin type. As a guideline those prone to oily skin should use a deep cleansing scrub three times a week. This will get rid of dead cells and stimulate the blood flow around the face bringing more oxygen and nutrients to the skin. In regards to make up, try using a skin illuminator either under or instead of foundation to add a healthy sheen to your complexion.
Which celebrities have you loved working with and why?
My sister of course! We always have such fun when we work together. I adore making her up as she has a face that can be made to look a thousand ways.
What’s been the proudest moment in your career so far?
I have had many proud moments during my career - launching my make-up line has to be one of them. I’m also extremely proud of launching my diffusion line JK in Target stores in the US last August.

Breaking News: RODIAL LAUNCHES BUM LIFT AND SKINNY BEACH RANGE (08.05.08)
Dreading the holiday season? This summer, there’s no need to fear your bikini. Rodial – one of the beauty industry’s most respected brands – have just launched two products that promise to get you into shape for the beach, without those gruelling trips to the gym. And we’ll be racing you to the beauty counters to get our hands on them…Hate your derriere? The first product making waves in the beauty world is Bum Lift (£97.87) – a revolutionary gel that offers both instant and long-term results. When massaged gently into buttocks and thighs, wheat protein instantly lifts, firms, smoothes and tones. Over time, the product promises to reduce cellulite by an impressive 32%, trim thighs and buttocks by up to 3.8cm, dramatically reduce the appearance of stretch marks, and improve skin firmness by 60%. If that wasn’t enough to get you flashing the plastic, the brand has also launched the Skinny Beach collection – a range of sun protection products that will not only keep you safe from harsh UV rays, but promise to refine your body shape and boost your colour. The range includes two SPF15 lotions (£39 each) – one tinted to ease the transition into the two-piece – and the ingenious Skinny Beach Sticks (£49 for 14 sticks). Skinny Beach Sticks – sachets of powder that make a tasty citrus drink when diluted with water – should be taken every day for the fortnight leading up to your holiday. Active ingredients, including betacarotene and lycopene, will build up the tanning pigments in your skin, which provides a powerful layer of antioxidants to protect skin from free radicals. Green tea extracts are teamed with meadowsweet, which encourages fat combustion and limit the absorption of lipids. The overall effect is a body that is slimmed and protected – just in time for the beach. To find your nearest stockist or order the products online, visit www.rodial.co.uk

Feature: BACKSTAGE BEAUTY (08.05.09)

We’ve spoken to six of the UK’s biggest Makeup Artists to get the inside scoop on this season’s hottest trends, the products they couldn’t get through summer without, and an exclusive peep into their globe-trotting, star-studded diary…

RACHEL WOOD FOR BENEFIT
Favourite makeup trend for Spring/Summer 09?
Full on fruit toned lipsticks, no glimmer, no shimmer - just block colour with a touch of wet sheen or clear gloss for extra oomph!
What colours will you be using on lips and eyes?
For lips, Fuschia, Coral, Orange and Cherry Red. For eyes, shadows in creams & golds and liners in electric blues and black.
What about hair?
If straight, I like it full at the roots and straight at the tips, or beachy waves/ textured where it is straighter at the roots, wavy then straight again at the tips & if up slightly disheveled ballerina buns at the top crown of the head.
What is your favourite summer scent?
Paul Smith Rose for the evening and Maybe Baby body lotion by Benefit for Day- smells super fresh
What is your top tool for Spring/Summer 09?
Benefit’s little buffing brush - after applying foundation, I buff it in using this little firm brush in upwards circular motions and it makes skin look polished and perfect.
Any tips on summer holiday makeup?
I don’t feel myself without black liner and mascara and Benefits waterproof badgal lash & eyeliner are great for hot weather and late nights out!. Also as you go into the sun your complexion changes so it’s difficult to wear your everyday foundation because after the first day in the sun it probably wont be correct anymore for your skin tone- but very often you may want some coverage for the evening- - so I always pack Benefits You Rebel as its a sheer tinted moisturiser that works with your own pigmentation/skin tone so it changes along as your tan darkens and it contains SPF for a touch of protection - great for when you return from holiday too as your tan fades
What celebrity always looks great on the red carpet?
Kate Blanchet always looks classy, elegant & effortlessly beautiful. I also love Eva Longoria because she wears bold colours or touches of animal prints, which I think looks so cute on her.
Any exciting work plans for the new season?
Yes at the moment I am on tour in the UK with Lisa Snowdon and the models from Britain’s Next top Model for a fashion show tour, then I'm off to NYC to work with my USA agency Artists by Timothy Priano, then over to Ibiza for a menswears shoot for Qasimi - I've been their head makeup designer for all the London Fashion Week shows.

Any other tips?
When looking at the new Spring/Summer trends find one that suits not only your colouring but also the occasion... Is it for work? Is it a new look for a night out? A summer wedding? And one that goes with your style, your hair, your clothes - it should all work as one big package. I often see girls wearing so many "it" trends at once - it looks too ‘try hard’ to be trendy, rather than looking current and fashionable.

SUSAN POSNICK
Favourite makeup trend for Spring/Summer 09?
I'm loving the fresh faced look for SS09 - its all about barely-there sheer coverage. Mineral makeup is perfect for achieving this particular look that was so key on many of the catwalk shows this season, such as Dolce & Gabanna.
What colours will you be using on lips and eyes?
Metallic-rimmed eyes were big this season, from heavily-lined sockets to more softer tones. I prefer to use the more subtle metallic looks in pretty shades of antique gold and pastel mauves as seen at Valentino. I'll be using my own ColorEyeDefine double ended liner/shadows in Bronze/Copper and Smokey Quartz/ Rose Quartz to re-create the looks. Lips are having a color explosion moment in a palette of magenta's, raspberry pinks, corals and vibrant ruby tones. I'll be using my new ColorEssential LipColor range that launches over here in the UK in July. Two of the shades in particular never leave my side at the moment! (Milan and Dallas)
What about hair?
Being a true romantic at heart, I loved all of the swept back lady-like styles at shows such as Luella and PPQ.
What is your favourite summer scent?
I'm such a beauty junkie and have so many scent bottles! I like fresh, light scents with citrus notes, but nothing too overpowering. I love classic fragrances like Jo Malone.
What is your top tool for Spring/Summer 09?
Your fingers! They are the best tool you have to work with.
Any tips on summer holiday makeup?
My range of mineral make-up - ColorFlo Mineral Foundation SPF26 and ColorMe Mineral Blush are just perfect as they are sweat proof and water resistant so let the skin breathe without affecting the overall look of your makeup. Plus, the ColorFlo helps protect your skin as it contains SPF26
What celebrity always looks great on the red carpet?
You Brits always know how to work a red carpet! Sienna Miller is a fan of my makeup range and she always looks beautiful. I also think Kate Winslet and Helen Mirren look amazing - real women but always manage to look effortlessly elegant.
Any exciting work plans for the new season?
Well, I've just been over to the UK to launch my new ColorEssential LipColor collection that comes out in July and that was so much fun! I'm also busy developing some exciting new products that should launch in 2010 so I'm a very busy lady right now.
Any other tips?
Wear shades that suit you - just because it’s on the catwalk, it doesn't mean it will necessarily work for you. If you see a Spring/Summer look you like, perhaps just choose one element of that particular look and pair it down.
Stockist for Susan Posnick in the UK is SkinBrands.co.uk / 020 8997 8541 and the new ColorEssential LipColor collection she mentions launches in the UK in July.

CHASE ASTON FOR THE BODY SHOP
Favourite makeup trend for Spring/Summer 09?
I loved the Louis Vuitton show, Pale skin, red lips, and a smoky defined eye. This is power dressing to the max – edgy, yet alluring makeup that screams ‘notice me!
What colours will you be using on lips and eyes?
My hot lip look shades will be barely-there nudes with just a hint of caramel and bronze, softened with a sheer tinted lip gloss, tawny rosy pinks, and rich reds. For eyes, I’m loving sheer washes of bronze, gold and silver over the eyelids for the day – and for the evening, I adore aqua greens and blues, paired with a bold swipe of black eye-liner, as shown at Gucci Spring/Summer 09.
What about hair?
I loved the hair at Hermes - natural, fresh, yet polished. I also loved the hair at DSquared, which was sexy, yet modern, with a hint of 1980's retro glamour. One of my favourite hair trends was shown at the Fendi Spring/Summer09 shows - wild and crazy, perfect to compliment this season’s dramatic eyes and rich lip colours.

What is your favourite summer scent?
For the day, I love Prada Infusion D'Homme and Marc Jacobs for Men. For those balmy summer nights, I love Versace L'Homme – a timeless classic.
What is your top tool for Spring/Summer 09?
ILLAMASQUA fake eyelashes - every fabulous shape and size to help me create fresh and flirty, baby doll, disco freak, edgy mama, to drop dead Diva luscious lashes!
Any tips on summer holiday makeup?
Avoid heavy foundation and powder, and only wear formulations that contain an high SPF+. I always use The Body Shop Natures Minerals Makeup when shooting in hot climates, as it looks and feels so natural. For your lashes do what I do with all my models; dye the lashes with a black lash tint so there is no need to wear mascara on the beach or by the pool when the sun goes down. For the eyes, use a water resistant/proof eyeshadow, smudging from the lash-line up to the crease of the eye and no further! Or just use a waterproof eye-liner pencil in a bright, metallic hue and line just along the top lash-line to make your eyes pop in the sun. For both the lips & cheeks, I always use a water resistant Lip & Cheek Stain, Smooth and blend over lips and onto the apples of the cheeks, for either a fresh rosy stain or warm golden glow. Stains do not come off in the water or in humid weather so they look good all through the day, I love The Body Shop "Hot Brights" double ended Lip & Cheek Stain 01 -pink with a sheer shimmering gloss.
What celebrity always looks great on the red carpet?
Charlize Theron… She always looks poised, polished, sophisticated yet fresh and modern.
Any exciting work plans for the new season?
Yes I have some fun shoots scheduled into the calendar. I fly out to New York this week to film a new makeup commercial for The Body Shop, which will go live on the web. I’m also appearing on the WB channel, showing how to re-create ‘runway to real life’ makeup looks. I will be presenting The Body Shop Trend collection make up ranges, both Summer 09 and Autumn /winter 09/10 to all the leading beauty directors in New York. Then I leave for Greece to shoot a series of fashion /beauty shoots. I love working the red carpet, so hopefully, schedules permitting, I will be able to squeeze a few in!
Any other tips?
From the barely-there nudes to studio 54 disco divas, this seasons makeup trends have a look for everybody. Be bold and beautiful with colour. Have fun., explore, discover and experiment. And if it doesn't work for you, wash it off and start again! Remember if you are going for bold lips, keep the eyes simple and the cheeks sheer. For dramatic eyes, keep the complexion fresh, yet flawless. Use subtle shimmer or highlighters on the cheekbones and dress the lips with either soft pinks or nude tones. And remember, always blend blend blend!

RUBY HAMMER
Favourite makeup trend for Spring/Summer 09?
I love the look seen at the Gucci show - a burst of colour on the eyes in the peacock colours. Surprisingly, it's a look that looks great on everyone, whatever their skin tone or hair colour. It's a fun look to play around with for summer.
What colours will you be using on lips and eyes?
Bright greens, blues or lilacs on the eyes. Lips will be semi-nude or bright red.
What about hair?
I loved the hair at the Prada show - very neat and structured, pulled off the face. I also loved the loose natural hair at Gucci - it had lots of volume and sweeping side partings. Very sexy!
What is your favourite summer scent?
Eau De Sisley - there are three new summer scents called 1, 2 and 3 and I love all of them.
What is your top tool for Spring/Summer 09?
Get a new angled brush to help with the contouring involved in a lot of this season’s trends. A Kabuki brush is also great for blending - Shu Uemura do a good one.
Any tips on summer holiday makeup?
Make sure eyebrows are well groomed before you go away and if you are very fair, consider getting your lashes tinted before you go. Curl lashes and add waterproof mascara so it stays in place when you are swimming. It's best to keep skin as clear as possible, so protect it well with an SPF30 cream and then just add a tinted lip gloss (look out for one with an SPF). Sheer cheek tint and a dusting of bronzer look great for the evening.
What celebrity always looks great on the red carpet?
I think Scarlett Johansson always looks amazing. She does that old school glamour very well - bright red lips, long lashes and immaculate make up.
Any exciting work plans for the new season?
I am going to Cannes during the Film Festival which I am really looking forward to. It's for pleasure rather than work but I will of course be keeping my eye out for the looks the celebrities are wearing. I have also been working on a new make up range for teenagers with Millie Kendall called Scarlett & Crimson. It will be available later on this year so I'm excited about seeing it on the shelves.

SCARLET ELLIS FOR B NEVER TOO BUSY TO BE BEAUTIFUL
Favourite makeup trend for Spring/Summer 09?
One of my favourite trends is glowing, peachy skin, as seen at Balmain and House of Holland. It's a great summer alternative to traditional bronzer for instantly brightening and lifting the skin. Try patting a highlighter along the cheek and brow bones for a luminous glow, then finish with a hot peachy coral blusher.
What colours will you be using on lips and eyes?
For lips, I’ll be using lilac. For eyes, metallics are another big trend (as seen at Armani) and look especially gorgeous on the eyes.
What is your favourite summer scent?
Summer fragrance should be fresh, light and make you feel like you are already on holiday. B Never Too Busy To Be Beautiful’s newest fragrance - 'Superworldunknown' has top notes of zesty lime. The hints of candy floss and ice cream bring back happy summer memories!
What is your top tool for Spring/Summer 09?
False lashes are essential for Spring/ Summer as they add extra drama to any look. A top tip for lash application is to always apply liquid liner afterwards to disguise the join. Then apply a couple of coats of mascara to blend the falsies in with your natural lashes.
Any tips on summer holiday makeup?
Summer holiday make up can be tricky, but it can be done. Just keep textures light, and use products that can multi task! B’s 'Bitten' lip cream (£9.30) gives a shimmering bronze glow to cheeks, lips and eyes, and fits easily into the smallest pocket, so it's perfect for travelling light.
What celebrity always looks great on the red carpet?
I love a star that dares to be different; for example Drew Barrymore looked fabulous recently in a 1930's inspired ensemble, complete with dramatic screen siren makeup.
Any other tips?
Long lasting products are essential for hot summer days. B’s 'Bezique' lip tint is a hot pink lip stain that will stay in place from beach to cocktail bar.

ALBERTI ESTEBAN, EDUCATION EXECUTIVE AT BOBBI BROWN.
Favourite makeup trend for Spring/Summer 09?
Nautical beauty. It’s makeup that doesn’t look like makeup. A sun kissed look that you get from spending a day walking along the beach.
What colours will you be using on lips and eyes?
Fresh, sheer and wearable shades on cheeks and lips, with clean defined eyes in Navy, Cobalt and Indigo colours.
What about hair?
I like hair to look beautifully natural, with a gentle wave that looks totally effortless.
What is your favourite summer scent?
Tom Ford’s Private Blend Italian Cypress. I like it because it is fresh, longwearing and it reminds me of being on holiday.
What is your top tool for Spring/Summer 09?
A good quality Bronzer Brush for creating an all over glow, a multi purpose Eye Sweep brush which is used to create softly defined colour on the eye, and Blotting Papers for hot summer days.
Any tips on summer holiday makeup?
Use a light formula Tinted Moisturiser with SPF, and a Sheer Cheek Tint on top to give a natural glow to the cheeks. Long Wear formulas of mascaras and eye shadows in natural shades are great for the beach (try No Smudge Mascara, and Long Wear Cream Shadows in Navajo and Beach Honey). Finish the look with a sweep of Bobbi’s new Illuminating Bronzer and a touch of Bobbi’s Tinted Lip Balm SPF15.
What celebrity always looks great on the red carpet?
Sienna Miller – she is very versatile and looks stunning no matter what!
Any exciting work plans for the new season?
I am travelling to Venice to do makeup for a wedding, then onto Paris to work at a Bobbi Brown Beauty Team event in Galleries Lafayette, and finally flying off to Munich for the Bobbi Brown seasonal boot camp training where we will be looking at next season’s trends and new techniques straight from Bobbi herself!
Any other tips?
Make sure you are always carrying sun protection, water, your favourite fragrance and a small cosmetic bag with your essentials for any makeup emergency!

TRIED & TESTED: TINTED MOISTURISERS (08.05.09)
Looking to lighten your base for summer? We’ve tried six tinted moisturisers that promise to leave your skin looking natural, youthful, and even-toned.

ESTEE LAUDER DAYWEAR PLUS MULTI PROTECTION TINTED MOISTURISER SPF15, £22.02 (www.esteelauder.co.uk)
What they say: A potent anti-oxidant cocktail, intensive hydrators and a UVA/UVB sunscreen system work together to provide the most comprehensive environmental protection. A sheer veil of pigment evens out skin tone and gives the skin a natural sheer finish.
The Results: I’ve got quite a few spots at the moment, so was wary of using a thin moisturiser rather than a foundation. However, I was very pleasantly surprised. I only needed to use a small amount to cover my whole face with a subtle, even colouring. It smelt fantastic and didn’t feel at all greasy on my skin. I loved the sheer glow that the moisturiser gave me and it definitely felt lighter on my skin than my usual foundation. It was great to know that my skin was protected with the SPF factor and, after a week of daily use, I felt my skin looked healthier, younger and more hydrated.
Best for: Anti-ageing

BENEFIT YOU REBEL SPF15, £19.50 (www.benefitcosmetics.co.uk)
What they say: Our defiantly different tinted moisturiser gives you light coverage, SPF15 protection and moisturising all in one hand tube. You’ll get just a hint of tint that adjusts to almost any skin tone. Oil-free and loaded with soothing aloe, antioxidant Vitamin E and Vitamin A to give you a fantastic glow.
THE RESULTS: Benefit products always look great and this fun, red squeezable tube is no exception. It’s quite a thick consistency, which blended easily into my skin, but it probably isn’t moisturising enough for drier skins. I’ve got quite dark skin and the product gave my skin a deep, sunny, tanned glow – this could be a problem if you’re quite fair skinned, although Benefit are bringing out a lighter shade soon. The moisturiser smelt fantastic and the Vitamin E & A made my skin feel soft and smooth. Just one application was enough to last the whole day and through to the evening.
BEST FOR: Young skin

BODY SHOP VITAMIN E TINTED MOISTURE LOTION, £8.80 (www.thebodyshop.co.uk)
What they say: Adds a touch of colour, helps even out skin tone, and protects the future of your skin. Great as a base for blushers. The Vitamin E ingredient is a naturally powerful antioxidant that helps protect the skin against the sun, pollution and smoke.
The Results: I liked the packaging of this product, as the pink stood out in my makeup bag. I applied this product instead of wearing my regular foundation and was really pleased with the results. It applied smoothly and absorbed quickly into my skin, leaving no greasy residue. I liked the fact that it’s lighter than foundation yet it still protects your skin and smelt delicious. The only downside was that although it covered dark under-eye circles, it didn’t cover blemishes as efficiently as my foundation does. I simply topped up with concealer.
Best for: Smaller budgets

DIOR HYDRACTION DEEP HYDRATION SKIN TINT SPF 20, £22.50 (020 7216 0216)
What they say: Combined with Aquaporin technology, the lightweight pigments and light-reflecting micro-pearlescent particles melt into the skin, enveloping it in an ultra-light and natural looking tinted veil. Imperfections are immediately minimized giving the complexion a long-lasting healthy look.
The Results: I love the green packaging - it looks fresh and is perfect for summer skin. The cream itself has a luxurious velvety texture that creates a natural sheer veil of colour on the entire face. It’s easy to blend and smells fantastic. My skin felt hydrated and my whole face seemed to glow with the light-reflecting pigments. I have a manic job and am always running around and the only downside was that around my nose and on my forehead I became quite shiny throughout the day – this was easily covered with a patting of powder though. I’d definitely recommend it as a ‘treat’ product.
Best for: Luxury feel.

JEMMA KIDD MINERAL SKIN NOURISHING TINT SPF 20, £28 (www.spacenk.co.uk)
What they say: Hypoallergenic, oil-free, and water-resistant ultra-sheer mineral tint, non-chemical sunscreen and antioxidant nourishing skincare all-in-one. With chamomile ingredient to soothe skin and light diffusing pigments to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
The Results: The packaging of the product looks sleek and modern – it’s pricey but definitely worth the extra money. The pump action tube means that application is mess-free, with very little waste. The smooth texture was easy to rub into my skin and gave fantastic colour – plus, it’s oil-free so didn’t give me any annoying shiny areas. I love mineral makeup – the antioxidants in this moisturiser (ginseng root and biloba leaf) are designed to protect skin from the elements and they actually work. I’ve already recommended it to friends and will be stocking up.
Best for: Easy application

NO 7 DUAL PROTECTION SPF 15, £10.30 (www.boots.co.uk)
What they say: This sheer light-diffusing moisturiser not only feels great on skin but gives you long-lasting hydration so your skin feels soft and smooth all day. With its patented multi-antioxidant and SPF15 this is the perfect way to protect your skin from the damaging effects of the sun and pollution.
The Results: I’m a big fan of No.7 – fantastic makeup that’s still affordable, which in the current climate is what everyone needs! This didn’t disappoint – the texture is soft and easy to blend into skin. The colour was great and gave my whole face a natural, even colour whilst hydrating at the same time. My complexion definitely benefited from wearing this for a fortnight - my skin looked glowing, youthful, without the need for extra top-ups throughout the day.
Best for: Even skin tone

Spa Review: TITANIC SPA, HUDDERSFIELD (01.05.09)
Location: Titanic Spa, Low Westwood Lane, Linthwaite, Huddersfield HD7 5UN. 0845 4103333. www.titanicspa.com
Facilities: Titanic Spa, Britain's first eco-spa, prides itself on its green credentials and holistic approach to beauty therapies – and they have a lot to boast about. Firstly, the stunning setting - a striking textile mill conversion located in a picturesque valley on the edge of the Pennines. And most significantly, the spa’s eco-friendly approach - photovoltaic panels providing electricity, a biomass generator burns tree chippings for heating, and the spa’s own borehole, which provides drinking water as well as water for the pool and showers. We aren’t the only ones that seem impressed – the spa’s commitment to the environment has been recognised with a nomination for a Times Green Award. First and foremost, however, Titanic offers a highly luxurious and pampering experience that brings people back time and time again. The signature 'Heat Experience' features a series of inviting hot rooms, such as the saunarium, crystal steam bath, and private mud chamber. When it all gets a bit too hot, visitors can jump into the invigorating plunge pool or, if brave enough, rub crushed ice over their body to instantly refresh skin. Additional areas include a relaxation lounge, salt-water pool and calming, candle-lit treatment rooms. At the end of the day, guests can retreat to one of twelve modern apartments – one or two bedrooms, sleeping up to four guests – with bright, floor-to-ceiling windows. Doors open onto balconies with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. And when all that pampering has worked up an appetite, guests can choose to cater for themselves in their apartment (each features a fully fitted kitchen) or to dine in the light, comfortable bistro.
Ambience: The spa manages to provide an air of luxury and relaxation without compromising its environmental ideals. The staff were on hand whenever we needed them, highly approachable and impressively knowledgeable. The day I spent at the spa was one of the most relaxing and pleasurable I have been fortunate to experience. We found the facilities spacious, clean and elegant with someone on hand and willing to help throughout.

Tried and Tested: EYEBROW TOOLS (01.05.09)
Groomed brows are a big trend for Spring/Summer 09. We’ve tested six tools that promise to keep them looking perfect.

PIXI EYEBROW DUO BRUSH, £12 (www.pixibeauty.com)
What they say: A double-ended eyebrow brush. One end features a cornrow brush to groom brows to perfection, the other features an angled brush for exact eyebrow shading.
The Results: I have quite unruly eyebrows and have thought about investing in a good brow brush for a while. I’m pleased to discover this tool – the double-ended brush means that I can groom and shade my brows without having to shell out on two separate brushes. The bristles are very soft, but I was impressed by how quickly and effectively the cornrow brush (which looks like a mascara wand) tidied my brows. The only downside is that I need to buy brow colour separately, which makes the purchase more expensive than it first appears.
Best for: Unruly brows

THE BODY SHOP BROW AND LINER KIT, £9.75 (www.thebodyshop.co.uk)
What they say: Shape and groom eyebrows and colour them too. Each kit comes with two shades of colour and a compact brush. Made with community trade marula oil.
The Results: I don’t wear much makeup, but have very fair brows and like to colour and define them before I go out. This kit suited me perfectly – I could throw it in my handbag and pull it out at the end of the day to groom my brows before I headed out to meet friends. The kit has two different applicators: one for precision and the other for block areas, which made it very easy and quick to use. I can rarely find a single powder shade to match my hair colour, so I also liked the fact that this kit had two different colours to blend together. Great value for money and really easy to use – I’d recommend it.
Best for: Grooming on the go.

CLINIQUE EYEBROW PENCIL WITH BRUSH, £9.78 (www.clinique.co.uk)
What they say: An eyebrow pencil that fills in and perfects brows, with a hard pencil formula that doesn’t smudge or flake. The special brush tames brows.
The Results: My brows are thin in areas – a look that wasn’t helped by a recent disaster with a pair of tweezers. I’ve always used powders in the past, but testing this pencil was a revelation and I won’t be swapping back. I was expecting the pencil to be quite soft, but the hard texture made it surprisingly easy to draw imitation hairs in the gaps - a very natural look. The end of the pencil features a mascara-style brush, which grooms and tidies brows. It’s such a simple tool, but very effective.
Best for: Thin or overplucked brows.

ELIZABETH ARDEN DUAL PERFECTION BROW SHAPER & EYELINER, £16 (0207 5742714)
What they say: This brow shaper and eyeliner can be applied wet or dry. Available in six shades for the best possible colour match.
The Results: Despite being small, this brow kit squeezes in two different brushes – a thick brush to fill brows, alongside a thinner tool to line eyes. It isn’t cheap, but if you consider the price of buying eyeliner and brow powder separately, it becomes great value for money. There are six shades to choose from, so I found it easy to match the colour of my brows. I prefer using the powder dry when filling in my brows, but find it easier to line eyes when the brush is slightly wet.
Best for: Versatility

PAULA DORF 2 PLUS 1 FOR BROWS, £21 (0208 9978541)
What they say: This trio creates a perfect colour match and fills in any missing hairs or imperfections for brows that last all day. Dip a brush into the powder to pick up the colour dip the brush into was and then apply to brows.
The Results: This product is really clever. I dipped the brush into the powder to pick up the colour, then straight into the wax to seal it, before applying it to brows. The powder defined my brows, which are naturally very fair, and the wax smoothed stray hairs and left them looking groomed. It’s got to the quickest and easiest way to keep brows looking tidy. You have to buy the brush separately so it isn’t the cheapest purchase, but I’d highly recommend it if you like your morning routine to be quick and fuss-free. I’d give it top marks.
Best for: Convenience

GUERLAIN CRAYON DEFINITION SOURCILS, £13.71 (01932 233887)
What they say: Whether the desired effect is a sharp contour or a subtle infusion, these eye pencils, eyeliner and kohl can do it all. Now, everyhing is possible. There are no limits to interpretations of beauty and style.
The Results: I’m not usually a fan of eyeliners or brow pencils, as they quickly go blunt and I forget to sharpen them. However, this long line pencil includes a good quality pencil sharpener, so there’s no excuse for me not to keep it sharp and ready for application. My brows are quite unruly and I still needed to use a brow brush before pencilling them in, but I loved the natural look that the soft nib gave them. It seems quite a lot to pay for a pencil, but it would last and last, so I would definitely invest in this product.
Best for: Natural definition

Blog: ACTRESS AND TV PRESENTER DENISE VAN OUTEN TALKS ABOUT HOW SHE KEEPS HER SKIN HEALTHY – AND WHY SHE’S TAKING PART IN THIS YEAR’S WALK FOR SKIN (01.05.09)
I’ve been told by makeup artists that my skin is in good condition. I do make sure I do all the right things to take care of my skin. For example, I’m always re-applying moisturiser both to my face and body and use an extra rich moisturiser during the winter.
My Nan always had great looking skin even in her eighties and she used to swear by regularly moisturising her skin.
As you get older, you become more aware of looking after your skin and we all want look good. Being in the industry I’m in also makes me very conscious of my skin. I want to look as good as I can, for as long as I can, as naturally as I can. I think we’d all love to get to a certain point in our lives without feeling we need to have anything done to look at our best.
My top 5 tips for healthy skin are:
1. Get plenty of sleep & stick to routine
2. Moisturise regularly & don’t forget to moisturise down to your neck and chest (which show signs of ageing earlier)
3. Make sure you get plenty of fresh air to you skin
4. Avoid caffeinated drinks – I always drink decaff tea and coffee now
5. Don’t sleep in your make-up!
She lived to the ripe old age of 83, but she did get skin cancer in her later years, which really affected my attitude to looking after my skin and is the reason why I’m supporting the 2009 Walk for Skin

I always have some degree of a tan, which I normally get from using fake tanning products at home. I normally mix this with my face and body moisturisers and apply before I go to bed. I do still sunbathe occasionally but I always make sure I wear a high sun protection factor. I use a high SPF all year round now.
When I was 16 I used tanning studios about once a month. This was quite a new concept at the time. I was also at an age were I had started to become interested in boys and thought a tan helped me look my best. There were no warnings on sun-beds or bad press surrounding them at the time, and you weren’t given any safety advice by the tanning studio before you used them.
I always remember my Nan would sit out in the sun whenever she had the opportunity to ‘get a bit of colour on her skin’. It wasn’t drummed into you then to always wear sun protection factor.
Once I got into the show business industry, make-up artists advised against using sun-beds, so I started experimenting with bronzers and self-tanning products instead.
Had I known what I know now when I was younger, I would have avoided sun-beds and generally looked after my skin better – after all, you only get one skin.

I haven’t used a sun-bed for ages now, but I don’t think women will ever stop using them completely. However, I think people should be given a proper consultation before they use a sun-bed for the first time and be made aware of the dangers of misuse and should always be advised to use SPF.

Breaking News: CHANEL NO.5 FILM LAUNCHES ON MAY 5TH - DIRECTED BY JEAN-PIERRE JEUNET, WITH AUDREY TAUTOU (01.05.09)
There are few scents more elegant and classic as iconic Chanel No.5, so when we heard that the brand were about to launch a short film to advertise the perfume, we knew it would be something quite special. With director Jean-Pierre Jeunet at the helm (past work includes Amelie and A Very Long Engagment) and Audrey Tautou taking the lead, it looks like we aren’t going to be at all disappointed… The film depicts a brief encounter between two strangers on a late night train journey, with Chanel No.5 creating a magical chemistry. The preview shots reveal that the film will be visually stunning. The soundtrack will be a mesmerizing blend of gentle train rhythm and the notes of Billie Holliday. On explaining his inspiration, Jean-Pierre Jeunet says “I’ve always loved night trains and their magic: it’s the perfect opportunity to create an encounter in suspended time. I really liked the idea of a woman meeting a man. They both think about each other, but continue on with their own lives, left with the regret that they didn’t make contact with the other person. I love to play with destiny and coincidences… I knew that the story would revolve around the mesmerizing effect of the scent in the woman’s wake. We had to give voice to the intangible.” The film launches online on May 5th at www.chaneln5.com and will hit our TV and cinema screens later in the year.

Feature: GOT IT NAILED (01.05.09)
From the most fashionable shape, to the hottest hue, to the most innovative new salon treatments – we’ve compiled the ultimate guide to manicures for Spring/Summer 09.

PREPARATION
Fashions change each season – and the same is true for nail shape. Leighton Denny, one of the UK’s leading nail technicians, describes the shape of things to come; “It isn’t a groundbreaking trend but this SS09 is all about natural shapes, rounded and following the natural shape of the nail. This is a far more flattering shape for all hands and ages and looks a lot more chic than the long, square shapes we have seen in the past.” To file nails, follow the golden rule and only file in one direction, never back and forth which can weaken nails. Buy nail files in bulk and keep one at home, in your handbag, your car and your office, so that you are never caught without. Leighton Denny’s award winning Crystal Nail File, £13.70 (www.leightondenny.com) is a sound investment. The smooth surface makes it easy to shape nails without any snagging and it seals the edges, helping to prevent breakage. Once you’ve tried it, you’ll never go back to traditional emery styles. Applying a base coat before colour will help to prevent staining. Look for nourishing formulas, such as Nails Inc Kensington Caviar Base Coat, £11 (www.nailsinc.com), which contains genuine caviar extract to condition dry nails. If you haven’t been quite so dedicated when wearing winter vamps, all is not lost. Soaking your nails in a solution made by dissolving denture whitening tablets will help to remove stains – or try Essie’s White Bright Nail Pen, £11.95 (www.nailsbymail.co.uk), which whitens and brightens nails without bleach. Regular buffing will also help remove stains. as well as smoothing ridges and improving blood flow to leave nails with a natural, healthy shine. Try Ms Manicure’s Smoothing Block, £2.49 (www.boots.com).

COLOUR
This season, there’s something for everyone when it comes to nail colour. Whether you prefer subtle, work-appropriate shades or want to have some fun experimenting with summery brights, you’ll be on trend. When Chanel launched Rouge Noir Nail Enamel in 1994, it sold out overnight with queues outside Barney’s in New York and unprecedented waiting lists of 6-12 months in the UK. The colour’s cult status was cemented when Uma Thurman famously wore it on her nails in Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction, so it comes as no surprise that Chanel has since been the brand to watch for the latest trends in nail colour. This season the trend for shimmery nudes is introduced with Chanel Django Nail Enamel, £16 (0207 493 3836), a frosted pale blush. Mavala has already picked up on this trend, with its Glamour shade (£3.66, stockist number: 01732 45 9412) offering a purse-friendly alternative. Brights are set to be a huge trend for the summer, with coral hues leading the way. It’s a surprisingly wearable colour, with a shade to suit all skin tones. OPI’s On Collins Avenue, £9.95 (www.lenawhite.co.uk) from the new Spring/Summer South Beach Collection has already sold out once in the US and will undoubtedly prove to be equally popular this side of the Pond. Other coral shades worth looking out for include Dior Bubble Gum, £14 (0207 216 0216), a slightly paler tone and Essie One of A Kind, £8.95 (www.nailsbymail.couk), a punchy orange-red. Beetroot shades, richly pigmented pink-purples, are also proving popular. Revlon offers a value-for-money option with Plum Seduction, £6.16 (0800 085 2716) whereas those who prefer to choose 3-free formulas will love Zoya Moxie, £9.25 (www.zoyapolish.co.uk).

FINISHING TOUCHES
Taking a couple of minutes after applying your polish to add some finishing touches is often the difference between a manicure that looks DIY and one which fools people into thinking you’ve booked into the salon. Applying a top-coat helps to seal colour and improve staying power. Nail addicts swear by Seche Vite, £8.95 (www.nailsbymail.co.uk), which has earned a reputation across the internet as “The World’s Best Top Coat”. It provides a quick dry effect to all polishes and seals the colour. For a chip-resistant finish, sweep the brush horizontally along the tip of the nail. This will help to reduce tipwear, which can be particularly frustrating for those regularly typing on computer keyboards. To make your manicure last even longer, reapply top coat every couple of days. Need to touch-dry your nails in a hurry? Whatever you do, don’t try to speed up the drying process by blasting nails with a hairdryer - it will simply make the polish bubble. Instead, plunge hands into a bowl of cold water- the drying process speeds up in liquid rather than in air. The Nail Doctor Dry It, You’ll Like It Quick Dry Drops, 6.99 (www.boots.com) have the same effect and come with a convenient pipette dispenser for precision. Less than steady hand? Tidy up any mistakes with Ciate Perfect Paint Job Corrective Pen, £9.95 (www.ciate.co.uk), it’s easy to use and gives a professional finish to D.I.Y. manicures.

HOME TREATMENTS
Hands are one of the most exposed and overworked parts of our bodies and yet, they are so often neglected. Treat them to some well-deserved pampering- they’ve earned it!To absorb optimum benefits from your hand and nail care products, begin by using an exfoliating hand scrub to slough dead skin cells. They take less than a minute to apply- simply massage into hands using a “washing” motion, then rinse to reveal glowing, younger looking hands. Crabtree & Evelyn’s La Source Hand Recovery, £12.50 for 100g (www.crabtree-evelyn.co.uk) is a fresh scented high street favourite, whilst the sea-salt and oil formula of Dr. Lewinn’s Private Formula Revitalising Hand Polish, £20 for 150g (www.debenhams.com) adds a touch of luxury to home treatments. For salon style decadence, treat hands to a results driven mask. OPI White Tea Mask, £17.70 for 125ml (www.lenawhite.co.uk) contains clay to detoxify, hydrating shea butter and antioxidant tea essences to protect- your hands will thank you! Apply a cuticle moisturiser every night and massage it into the cuticle bed. This will have a nourishing effect on nails, improving blood flow and making them stronger in time, as well as softening cuticles. Never trim cuticles at home – this should be left to the professionals as over-trimming can leave nails susceptible to infection and lead to thickening of the cuticles. Neglected cuticles will benefit from a rich formula, so try Lush Lemony Flutter Cuticle Butter, £5.14 for 50g (www.lush.co.uk), which melts on application to improve the appearance of dry, winter-fatigued skin. Those who prefer a lighter formula should try The Body Shop’s Almond Nail & Cuticle Treatment, £6.85 (www.thebodyshop.co.uk). The oil is packaged in a convenient brush pen applicator with a rubber orange stick lid, providing all you need to treat your cuticles in one product.

HAND CREAMS
A large part of good hand maintenance is getting into a routine, treating your hands regularly and always having a cream ready to apply throughout the day - but with so many brands on offer, it’s not always easy deciding which to choose. Invest in a matching hand wash and lotion set with pump dispensers for your bathroom such as Space NK Rose Hand Wash and Hand Lotion, £16 each for 300ml (www.spacenk.com). Developed by Space NK founder, Nicky Kinnaird, the range uses mainly natural ingredients and is free from nasties such as parabens to treat your hands as gently as possible. It will look so stunning by your sink that you won’t be able to resist using it every time you wash your hands. It’s also worth looking for special handbag-sized tubes of hand cream, which are convenient for carrying around and also ideal for travel if under the restriction of 100ml. Everything about Creme de la Mer’s The Hand Treatment, £58.72 for 100ml (0870 034 2566), from the distinctive sleek signature packaging to the rich formula feels so luxurious that you won’t be embarrassed to apply on the go. Those who prefer organic beauty products should check out Organic Surge’s brand new Lavender and Geranium Hand and Nail Cream, £3.99 for 75ml (www.organicsurge.com). The lightweight gel-cream formula leaves no greasy residue, making it a good choice for summer.
Hands are highly susceptible to sun damage and are often one of the first areas to show signs of aging. Those with mature skin should look for specially targeted formulas such as Elemis Pro-Collagen Hand and Nail Cream, £29 for 100ml (www.timetospa.co.uk). However, prevention is better than cure so seek out brands that incorporate sun protection. LA based brand Ole Henriksen is ideally placed to understand the dangers of excessive sun - try their Hands Forward Supercharged Creme with SPF 15, £20 for 112g at Harvey Nichols (0207 235 5000).

Choose from The Embellished, The Modernist, Nuno’s Nail and Jemima’s French. The Embellished is a textured nail finish, which takes inspiration from Dolce & Gabbana and Miu Miu and is available in a rainbow of jewel tones. The Modernist is a ‘60s style graphic, monochrome nail, based on the make-up styles seen at Dries van Noten and Lanvin, whereas Nuno’s Nail features the trend for technicolour and has been created in collaboration with fashion illustrator, Nuno Da Costa. Finally, Jemima’s French is an edgy twist on a traditional French manicure, a creamy base with a gothic black tip, created in collaboration with good friend and client, Jemima French of Frost French. Which will you opt for?
