Breaking News: WEBSITE US-UNLOCKED LAUNCHES – OFFERING AMERICAN ONLINE SHOPPING TO UK CUSTOMERS (27.11.09)
Ever found yourself browsing on an American website, only to discover that they don’t ship to the UK? We have – and when you’ve fallen in love with something, there are few things more frustrating. Those moments are set to become a distant memory, as this month a fabulous new website has launched – USUNLOCKED.com – which opens up US-based online stores to the rest of the world.
Whether you want to buy an exclusive fragrance from America’s leading beauty chain Sephora, the hottest new lipstick shade from shopping mecca Macy’s, or a coveted product from organic, eco-friendly brand Karma Organics – USUNLOCKED.com is the place to head. It’s great for re-stocking your wardrobe too – opening up websites like GAP, Old Navy, and Banana Republic.
So, how does it work? Simply create an account at USUNLOCKED.com – it’s completely free – and start shopping online! When you find an item you want to buy, return to USUNLOCKED.com to register the item. You’ll be asked to list the number of items you are buying, the total cost of items, and the estimated weight (there’s a handy guide online – or you could weigh something similar on your kitchen/bathroom scales and take packaging into account). Once you’ve done so, they’ll give you a quote on shipment costs and provide you with a US address – the shipping address you should list when you get to the store’s online checkout. Once they’ve received it (and you’ve paid the shipment cost) you can usually expect to receive your item within two working days – anything shipped by 18th December should arrive in time for Christmas. Impressive, huh?
Better still, if you stumble upon a website that only allows credit cards registered in the US, you can purchase a US Unlocked Card, which will allow you to buy online (you’ll need to add funds before you shop though!).

Tried & Tested: RICH BODY MOISTURISERS (27.11.09)
Inject moisture into your skin this winter, with our pick of rich, intensive body creams, butters and lotions.
DERMALOGICA ULTRARICH BODY CREAM, £33.65 (0800 591818)
What they say: Instantly comfort, relieve and hydrate ultra-dry, dehydrated skin with this intensely nourishing body cream. Oil of Evening Primrose replenishes and conditions while Panthenol (Pro Vitamin B5) helps boost critical moisture levels.
The Results: I was impressed with the size of this bottle – it would last for months, even with daily use. I liked the pump applicator too, as it made applying it really convenient and mess-free. The lotion is white, lightweight and fairly thin – I usually opt for thick body butters, so I wasn’t expecting my skin to feel very hydrated. However, I was very pleasantly surprised – it absorbed almost instantly and left my body feeling very, very soft, without any greasiness. It would be great for people who are always in a hurry, as they could get dressed straight away. There’s no scent, which could be a let down for people that like sweetly-scented moisturisers, but I liked the way it didn’t mix or compete with my perfume.
Best for: Quick and convenient
CLINIQUE DEEP COMFORT BODY LOTION, £25 (www.clinique.co.uk)
What they say: This lightweight, silky lotion relieves dry, flaky skin. Perfect for everyday use.
The Results: I’ve used Deep Comfort Body Butter in the past, so when I found out that Clinique had launched a lotion I was very keen to test it. The lotion has the same neutral buttery scent, but a lighter, thinner texture. The results are just as impressive as the body butter – my elbows and knees usually feel as rough as sandpaper, but this product instantly hydrated the skin and left it feeling as soft as velvet. It was a pleasure to apply, as it felt very indulgent and luxurious. It left a subtle sheen on the surface of my skin, but didn’t feel at all greasy. I needed quite a lot of lotion to cover my whole body, but the bottle size is generous.
Best for: Deep hydration
NEAL’S YARD SENSUAL JASMINE BODY CREAM, £25.10 (www.nealsyardremedies.com)
What they say: For deeply nourished and fragrant skin. Enriched with Fairtrade Honey, Fairtrade Brazil nut oil and essential oils of jasmine and ylang ylang.
The Results: I sometimes find the scent of jasmine a little overpowering, so was worried this butter would have a strong scent. But as soon as I cracked open the lid, a smile spread over my face – the fragrance is very subtle, pretty, and luxurious – and I couldn’t wait to apply it. The cream is thick, but not buttery, and sinks into skin very quickly. The scent clings to skin for hours, so there’s no need to wear perfume – I’d definitely apply this before a night out. I liked the pot too – it feels heavy and expensive, which would make it a lovely gift to unwrap on Christmas day. As a bonus, my skin feels lovely and smooth – but I’d use it for the scent alone.
Best for: Luxurious scent
KATE SOMERVILLE GOAT MILK BODY LOTION, £27.40 (www.spacenk.co.uk)
What they say: An intensively nourishing body lotion with restorative and healing properties to dramatically improve overall skin health and vitality. Naturally occurring enzymes work to gently exfoliate skin, leaving it healthy and smooth. Relieves dryness, sensitivity and irritation.
The Results: I must admit that I felt a bit squeamish when I was first told I would be testing a ‘Goat’s Milk’ body lotion – I had visions of it having a strong scent like goat’s cheese, so I was relieved to discover it had a neutral, milky fragrance. The white lotion has a thin, lightweight, non-greasy texture – it absorbed easily and my skin instantly felt softer and hydrated. It left a lovely sheen on the surface of my skin, making it ideal for applying before a night out – it made my skin appear to glow with health. Another plus point was that I only needed a small blob to cover my entire body, so a little goes a very long way.
Best for: Making skin glow
LUSH DREAM CREAM, £9.60 (www.lush.co.uk)
What they say: Incredibly soothing body lotion for troubled skin. Dream Cream is Lush's best-selling product because it makes sore skin feel good again. Chamomile and lavender calm irritations, reduce redness and banish blotches. We've also included soothing oat milk, too. It contains everything nature makes for soothing your skin.
The Results: I wasn’t sure about the fragrance of this moisturiser when I first opened the lid – I could tell it was packed with essential oils, but the resulting scent is a bit confusing. I have very dry skin, especially on my legs, so I try to moisturise twice a day. It was only after testing this thick, cooling cream that I realised the scent didn’t matter a jot – the blend of essential oils make this product a powerful hydrator and after just a week of use, my skin has been transformed. It doesn’t feel itchy or dry anymore – but balanced and soft. The packaging might not be sexy, but I’m so impressed with the results that the pot is sitting on my dressing table with pride.
Best for: Extra dry skin
DOVE INTENSIVE BODY BUTTER, £4.99 (0800 085 1548)
What they say: Perfect for indulgent pampering with a scoopable spa-inspired format. Its thicker formulation with natural shea and cocoa butter melts at body temperature to glide across skin for the ultimate skin treat.
The Results: I liked the texture of this moisturiser – it felt thick, creamy, and indulgent. Smoothing it over skin felt soothing and my skin felt like it had been injected with moisture. The formulation is so thick that it took a while to work into my skin – but on the plus side, I only needed a small amount to cover my entire body. It didn’t absorb instantly, so I had to hang round for a while before getting dressed – I think it’s better suited to night-time application. The price is brilliant and my skin has never felt softer.
Best for: Budget buy
Treatment Review: SEMI-PERMANENT MAKEUP, TRACIE GILES INTERNATIONAL (27.11.09)
What it promises: If you¹ve ever tried to pencil in patchy eyebrows, you¹ll know how difficult it can be to get them looking natural and symmetrical, even with the steadiest of hands. Tracie Giles’s new 3D permanent makeup, creates the illusion of perfect little hairs, so you can cheat your way to beautiful, natural-looking brows.
What happens: As I arrived at Tracie's Harley Street clinic, I felt a little apprehensive. I was worried that my eyebrows would look too dark or unnatural, but Tracie understood my nerves and talked at length about what I wanted to achieve. Over a cup of tea, we looked at reference pictures and she talked in detail about what was going to happen during the treatment – and by the end of the consultation, I knew I was in very safe hands. Tracie decided to perform the procedure over two sessions, as this would allow me to get used to the change gradually, so I returned four weeks later to complete the treatment. The treatment itself is not so much painful, as a slightly uncomfortable, scratchy sensation. As I lay on the treatment chair and relaxed, Tracie carefully drew in very fine ‘hairs’ to create a textured effect, rather than filling in - the key to a natural looking result. Each treatment session took between 30 60 minutes.
The Results: When I held the mirror up to my face after the treatment, I screamed out in delight and gave Tracie a big hug – I was thrilled with the results. My eyebrows were a little red, but this died down after a couple of hours. My eyebrows looked completely natural, with no bald patches, and a lovely extended line along my outer eye to replace the diminished one that I had overplucked over the years. It took me a couple of days to get used to them, but I now feel my eyes are much better defined and I feel less of a need to wear makeup. My friends haven¹t noticed my eyebrows, but a couple have told me I look well, without realising what I’d had done! Once I’d told them about the treatment, both asked me for Tracie’s number!
Price: Between £495 and £695, with re-touches at half the full procedural price. The eyebrows will last typically from between 1-4 years. Re-touches are recommended every 6 - 18 months

Blog: DR TUHIN DEV - DERMATOLOGIST AND SKINCARE RANGE CREATOR – BLOGS ABOUT SKIN (27.11.09)
From an early age I have been fascinated by skin care and how our lifestyles and diet can affect our skins appearance.
I grew up in Malaysia where my father was a GP for 43 years. He specialised in treatments for skin complaints such as eczema and psoriasis. It seemed a natural progression for me that, after qualifying and working as a family doctor in Malaysia and India, I would come to the UK to study Dermatology. Whilst studying, the idea to research and formulate products to help reduce the signs of ageing was ever present in my mind. With this in mind I went on to study Mesotherapy in Paris.
My products are now a reality, and the response from the end users has been so rewarding and has made my journey worthwhile.
Knowing so much about skin means that looking after my own is quite important to me. I am an old fashioned guy, but looking my best is still important and I have had anti-ageing beauty treatments in the past, including Ayurvedic head and face treatments and facial massages. My ‘can’t do without’ product is my Core-Rejuve Night cream, which contains 14 potent active ingredients. It has definitely improved my skin and is part of my daily skincare routine.
My tips for looking good would be a balanced lifestyle, keeping stress to a minimum wherever possible, a healthy diet and plenty of sleep. A good skincare routine is essential as well as using products that not only hydrate but work to improve the skins health. Meditation and yoga are also very beneficial to our mental and physical wellbeing.
I am not totally against cosmetic procedures and am always interested in innovative treatments, but I would not consider them for myself. I would prefer to spend a weekend at an Ayurvedic retreat to have a total mind and body de-stressing and rejuvenating treatment.
Dr Tuhin Dev’s Skincare Range is available at http://www.drtuhindevskincare.co.uk
Feature: BEAUTY TRIBES (27.11.09)
What’s your beauty personality? Are you constantly scouring the shelves for bargains – or looking to deck your dressing table in natural, organic goods? We’ve taken a closer look at six beauty tribes…
BARGAINISTAS
Does the lure of a bargain get your heart racing? Members of the Bargainista tribe are proving that you don’t need to break the bank to look good.
Parisian brand Bourjois (www.asos.com) offers fabulous value for money with their colourful makeup and newly launched skincare range. The products are far better quality than you’d expect from the price tag – and with everything under £10, you can ensure your cosmetics bag is always well stocked.
And what about skin and bodycare? With the tagline, ‘We believe that you shouldn’t have to spend an arm & a leg just to moisturise one”, it’s hardly surprising that Soap & Glory has become the bargainistas’ go-to brand for everyday essentials and pampering treats. With cheeky names and result-driven products, the range is the brainchild of fairy godmother of beauty Marcia Kilgore. Latest launch You Won’t Believe Your Eyes Illuminating Under-Eye Serum, £9 (Boots nationwide) gives the illusion of eight hours sleep, with light-reflecting particles, cooling cucumber and a user-friendly rollerball applicator to ease puffiness.
Meanwhile, the UK is going crazy for STEAMCREAM, £9.95 (www.steamcream.co.uk). Created through a revolutionary steam-infused process that gently fuses the ingredients to allow for enhanced absorption when applied to skin, the cream includes oatmeal extract, orange flower water and pure essential oils. Suitable for use on face, hands and body, it leaves even the most sensitive skin feeling hydrated and nourished. STEAMCREAM is packaged in eco-friendly aluminium tins, each featuring a limited edition artwork designed by Tokyo-based artist Takayuki Totsuka and is priced so reasonably that you’ll get change from a tenner so there’s no need to choose just one favourite!
THE ARTISTS
Makeup junkies know the classics that work, but aren’t afraid to experiment with trends and unexpected shades.
Bobbi Brown, one of the world’s best loved makeup addicts, creates cosmetics that women truly want to wear - from understated shades to enhance natural beauty, to wearable metallics for evenings. Bestselling Metallic Long-wear Cream Shadows, £16 (www.bobbibrown.co.uk) offer a grown-up route to makeup for the party season. For a dramatic look, team with a slick of Benefit BADgal Mascara, £14.50 (www.benefitcosmetics.co.uk) in classic Black or – for an elegant festive look – in Plum.
The influence of makeup on our emotions is a powerful one. Poppy King, a.k.a. the Lipstick Queen, understands the power of a good lipstick, as she explains, “Red lipstick does to women what a sports car does to men! It totally transforms you into your most charged self. It has been proven that the colour red makes you feel more confident and that women who wear red lipstick actually smile more often. I feel red is the superhero colour and that you feel like a superhero when you wear it because it is so strong and so much of a statement of prowess and sexuality.”
In fact, she feels so strongly about the effects that, unusually, she has based her entire brand solely on products for the lips, from girlie glosses to ladylike lipsticks, from £13.70 (www.spacenk.co.uk). Hot on the tongues of lipstick connoisseurs, Besame’s Sets, £35 (www.beautyexpert.co.uk) are highly desirable, containing a longwear lipstick, pencil and miniature brush. Scared to try the vamp trend? Try the Red Velvet shade, a deep yet wearable blood-red, which offers an easy way to experiment.
Another artistic creation, NARS has had a devoted fan base for years, with products such as The Multiple and Blush Orgasm attaining legendary status. As the brand celebrates its 15th anniversary, it is looking anything but tired. The packaging is as chic and relevant now as the day it was launched - and the Holiday 2009 collection is currently wowing the industry. It’s difficult to choose just one “hero” from the range, from £12.50 (www.narscosmetics.co.uk), which includes a tempting spectrum of Duo Eyeshadows, handy Soft Touch Shadow Pencils and candy-apple red Nail Polish - you won’t want to wait until Christmas Day!
On the lookout for something different? New kid on the block Illamasqua (www.illamasqua.com), offers professional quality makeup with intense pigmentation, which has quickly gained the brand cult status since its launch last year.
GREEN GODDESSES
The explosion of the natural and organic market has been one of the biggest developments to the beauty industry in recent years.
Nicola Elliott, founder of NEOM Luxury Organics, attributes this to greater awareness, “Inevitably as women become more and more educated about what goes in their beauty, body and home products they are turning more towards organic options. So many women are still shocked when we explain how many chemicals they currently put on their body per day (250) and decide to try and reduce that count. Even if you are attached to a particular face cream, it’s a no brainer to go organic when it comes to hand and body and more home products, because this is where you can really reduce your chemical count. Body oil is a great switch, you’ll really notice a huge difference when you see how quickly an organic body oil penetrates (no silicone) and how well conditioned your skin becomes afterwards.”
Check out NEOM’s aptly named Complete Bliss Organic Body Oil, £28 for 100ml (www.neomorganics.com), which contains Moroccan blush rose accentuated by hints of lime and black pepper. Can’t resist using a cream formula? Beauties with a conscience can get their fix with Lush’s Charity Pot, £9.95 (www.lush.co.uk), which helps to save the planet as well as your skin - impressive for a pot of body lotion! All proceeds, minus the VAT, are divided between a variety of worthy causes such as animal welfare and conservation.
As facialist to celebrities including Dannii Minogue and Emilia Fox, Deborah Mitchell knows a thing or two about achieving perfect skin on a busy schedule. Her healing hands have a remarkable effect and her signature LIA Therapy facials have been described as “the natural alternative to a face lift”. Passionate about natural beauty, her natural range, HEAVEN by Deborah Mitchell, contains organic ingredients and recyclable packaging. For winter, party loving green goddesses won’t regret investing in the Hydrating & Firming Mask, £28.34 (www.heavenskincare.com) – a godsend to tired, hungover, or mature skin.
SCIENCE ADDICTS
Always listened intently when the phrase “here comes the science part” is uttered? You’ll be keeping a careful eye out for the latest innovations to hit the shelves.
Clarisonic, from £146.81 (www.spacenk.co.uk) is a handy gadget, not dissimilar to an oversized electric toothbrush, which is used to deeply cleanse the face. The brush features patented sonic frequency of more than 300 movements per second to cleanse skin twice as effectively as manual cleansing, recreating the deep clean feeling of a professional treatment. “These days, people are using sunscreens daily, long-lasting makeup and self-tanners so it’s imperative to properly cleanse the face if you want clear skin” explains Dr. Ranella Hirsch, a leading dermatologist. “Dirt, oil and bacteria left on the skin can wreak havoc and without clean pores, treatment products like acne fighters and anti-aging moisturisers are less effective”. Used twice daily along with any standard cleanser, including balm formulas, the vibrating face brush claims to diminish the appearance of pores, fine-lines and wrinkles to leave skin radiant and smooth. At time of writing, Space NK’s impressive waiting list had been satisfied and Clarisonic is currently in stock but hurry, it’s unlikely to stay that way for long!
One such magic potion that you might choose to use in conjunction with Clarisonic, is Rodial’s Glamtox, from £68.51 (www.rodial.co.uk). Described as “Botox in a bottle”, Rodial has combined the latest scientific developments with the best ingredients nature has to offer in this premium skincare range, which is a favourite with A-listers including Angelina Jolie and Eva Mendes. The brand claims that results are comparable to plastic surgery, but without the expense and the pain - and with products to pick from including masks, SPF day creams and eye treatments, it’s surely worth a try.
Another science-led product that gives nature a helping hand is Talika Lipocils Eyelash Conditioning Gel, £20 (www.beautyexpert.co.uk). 2009 has been the year of the eyelash, with Bambi-like extensions and falsies stepping off the celebrity arena and proving extremely popular. However, this trend can have unexpectedly damaging effects. Even daily use of mascara, something which most of us take for granted, can leave eyelashes brittle with an increased likelihood of breakage and reduced growth. Talika Lipocils Eyelash Conditioning Gel, with natural plant extracts, counteracts these effects by stimulating growth, adding shine and lengthening eyelashes by up to 2.5mm in just 28 days.
SPA BUNNIES
Perhaps the ultimate beauty indulgence is taking some me-time at a spa or salon.
Elemis (www.elemis.com) have long been the go-to brand for pampering products and treatments. Drift off and be transported to the shores of Tahiti with their Exotic Frangipani Body Nourish Wrap. All Elemis treatments commence with a warm, aromatic lime infused foot compress known as the Welcome Touch ritual. This has a balancing effect, enabling you to gain optimum benefits from the treatment that follows. The therapist begins with body brushing to stimulate circulation, boost lymphatic drainage, and exfoliate dead cells. Then heated monoi oil is drizzled over the body to soothe and condition, leaving skin delicately fragranced and mind relaxed, in just 45 minutes.
Those on a budget who want to recreate the experience of an exotic treatment at home will be delighted to discover The Body Shop’s new Spa Wisdom range, from £7 (www.thebodyshop.co.uk). Choose from African Retreat or Polynesian Paradise collections to suit your mood. Products from the range would also make a thoughtful gift for a stressed out friend - if you can bear to part with it!
Short on time? Cowshed’s new Carnaby Street Treatment Rooms (www.cowshedonline.com) provide an oasis of calm tucked away from the hustle and bustle of London’s Soho. A range of treatments is on offer, from facials to reflexology but we simply can’t get enough of their manicures, from £28. Sink into one of the sumptuous manicure chairs and relax as your designated therapist files and buffs nails and treats hands and cuticles with rich Cowshed creams and oils. The treatment concludes with the expert application of your choice of Essie polish. Recreate the treatment at home with Cowshed Sandalwood Intensive Hand & Foot Treatment Cream, £35, Essie’s bestselling vampy Wicked, £8.95 (www.nailsbymail.co.uk) and finish with Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat, £8.95 (www.nailsbymail.co.uk).
CONVENIENCE QUEENS
Savvy shoppers are now picking up their beauty products with their weekly groceries – and we’ll be racing you to the supermarket checkout!
Load up your trolley on your next trip to Sainsbury’s. Their Active Naturals range is packed with tempting delights such as Olive & Bamboo Body Butter, £2.92, and Passionfruit Hand Cream, £1.94. Meanwhile, their exclusive contract with Champney’s signature range is not to be missed, with the brand new Thai Royale Bubble Float, £10, particularly worthy of mention - it is seriously indulgent!
If Waitrose is your preferred supermarket, ignore the delicious deli counters and even the fresh fruit aisle - and instead, head straight for the health and beauty department where exclusive brands include brand new Duchy Organics, developed in collaboration with Daniel Galvin Junior. One of the first premium beauty ranges to be awarded Soil Association certification and with a percentage of sales donated to charitable causes, there’s no reason to feel guilty about falling head over heels for Duchy Organics Mandarin Zest & Rose Geranium fragrance- the hand wash, £6.99, is to die for.
Finally, head to Tesco to take advantage of the industry-respected Denise McAdam haircare range, catwalk cosmetics collection Barbara Daly (used backstage at London Fashion Week) and purse-friendly All About Face collection, where every item costs just £1.49.
Tried and Tested: MINERAL POWDER FOUNDATIONS (20.11.09)
Let your skin breath this festive season, with a lightweight, mineral powder foundation. We’ve tested six of the best…
REVLON COLOUR STAY MINERAL FOUNDATION, £12.71 (www.boots.com)
What they say: The first long-wearing mineral makeup with an exclusive skin loving mineral complex for natural radiant skin. Applies easily and blends evenly for a soft, natural-looking, seamless appearance.
The Results: I hate it when you buy beauty products and then find out you need to buy a separate applicator – so the fact that this product had a brush incorporated was a big bonus. However, I did find the brush a little difficult to use – the handle was short and wide, making it difficult to grasp. My only other gripe was that the lid didn’t feel very secure when I closed it, so I’d probably worry about it spilling all over my bag. On the plus side, the foundation gave my skin a gorgeous, even-toned, matte finish. Better still, the coverage was feather light – which was great, as I’m not keen on a caked-on look.
Best For: A Natural Look.
CLINIQUE SUPERBALANCED POWDER MAKEUP, £27 (www.clinique.co.uk)
What they say: Superbalanced Makeup provides gorgeous, flawless coverage that’s so eminently blendable and natural-looking that you can take it from sheer to full coverage with extraordinary ease of application.
The Results: I only had to use a small amount of this product to achieve a brilliant even-toned coverage. I applied the powder with the enclosed brush – and whilst it’s great for throwing in your handbag, I’d probably use my own brush in future as I prefer a bigger brush. Whenever I’ve used loose powders I find that lots of product spills out and gets wasted or covers my clothes – so I loved the fact that the product comes as a compressed powder and you use a shaver to control how much product is released. It felt feather light on my skin, hid all my blemishes, and kept my complexion shine free all day without drying it out. I’d definitely recommend this product to people with oily skin.
Best for: Keeping shine at bay
PHILOSOPHY SUPERNATURAL AIRBRUSHED CANVAS, £32 (www.johnlewis.com/philosophy)
What they say: This multitasking powder formula provides a sheer, natural coverage and leaves the skin with a smooth, airbrushed appearance.
The Results: This is an amazing and incredibly handy compact, incorporating a great mirror, brush and foundation all one package. It’s perfect for touch-ups on the go, as it’s small and secure enough to carry around in my handbag. After using the powder, my husband commented on how great my skin was looking – something that never usually happens! A couple of friends asked if I’d changed my skincare as my skin was glowing and looked absolutely flawless. It made my complexion look younger, fresher and quite literally airbrushed. It really does what it says on the tin. It is definitely worth the price tag.
Best for: Flawless skin
LAURA MERCIER MINERAL POWDER, £25 (www.lauramercier.com)
What they say: This technologically advanced powder formula leaves a luminous veil on the skin when used alone as a foundation or as a traditional powder. Skin tone is evened out and a natural glow is imparted for the healthiest looking skin any time of year.
The Results: I have oily skin that’s really prone to spots and I’ve struggled for years to find a foundation that gives good coverage without making my skin breakout or become greasier. This is without doubt the best foundation I have ever used. I usually have to apply a thick layer of foundation to cover all my blemishes, so foundations don’t tend to last very long and I constantly have to replace them. However, I only needed a small amount of this powder to cover my whole face and my spots were completely covered. My skin looked smooth and flawless and stayed shine-free all day. Even my friends commented on how good my skin looked. After a few weeks of using it, my spots are starting to clear up. I’m very, very impressed.
Best for: Problem Skin
LILY LILO MINERAL FOUNDATION, £12 (www.lilylolo.co.uk )
What they say: Lily Lolo mineral foundation is a loose powder foundation that covers blotches, blemishes and flaws and looks and feels barely there.
The Results: I fell in love with this product as soon as I set eyes on it – the pot looks great and the price is brilliant. The foundation has the texture of a light powder and made my skin look flawless. I only needed a tiny amount to cover my entire face, which makes it great value for money. I have fine lines around my eyes and tend to avoid powders as I find the grains build up in the wrinkles and make them stand out. This foundation was quite an exception as it really filled them and my lines were completely concealed. Better still, my skin didn’t feel at all dry with the powder - it felt smooth and hydrated.
Best for: Minimising Fine Lines
MARKS & SPENCER AUTOGRAPH MINERALS FACE POWDER, £15 (www.marksandspencer.com)
What they say: This double milled face powder acts like an all-in-one concealer, foundation and powder and provides a light buildable coverage for a seamless finish.
The Results: This powder comes in fabulous sleek, silver packaging and looks far more expensive than the price tag. The texture is very fine, which made it easy to apply evenly over my skin. The only problem I found was that a bit of powder spilled onto my clothes, so in the future I’ll put some tissue over my lap before I use it. Afterwards, my skin had a healthy, radiant glow. I needed to reapply a few times throughout the day as it doesn’t last very long, but the pot has a generous amount of powder so there’s more than enough for regular top-ups.
Best for: A Healthy Glow
Spas & Treatments: NATURA BISSE O2 AWAKENING FACIAL, MICHAELJOHN (20.11.09)
What it promises: Perfect for city girls, frequent flyers, and smokers, this indulgent facial releases pure O2xygen molecules into the skin’s epidermal layer to re-energise natural cellular functions and eliminate toxins residing within the skin’s pores. The complexion is left looking radiant, healthy and even-toned – whilst a deep massage lulls you into a deep state of calm and relaxation.
What happens: Michaeljohn - located in the heart of London’s Mayfair - looks small and fairly unassuming from the street outside, but the interior is both spacey and achingly stylish. Upstairs is dedicated to hair – whilst downstairs is home to a tranquil spa, dressed in splashes of chocolate brown and soft caramel. My therapist lead me into the treatment room – neutral colours, wooden floor, and an ultra-comfortable bed swathed in the softest blankets I have ever felt – and left me to get undressed and make myself comfortable. A few minutes later, she returned and began the treatment by cleansing and toning my skin, whilst directing a gentle cloud steam over my face to open up pores. Extractions followed – not my favourite part of a facial, but necessary nonetheless – and then began a delicious facial massage, using products infused with oxygen to refresh and regenerate my complexion. I found it difficult to keep my eyes open as the facial progressed – especially when the massage moved onto my shoulders and scalp – but I’m glad I managed to stay awake, as I didn’t want to miss a second. After a generous application of moisturiser and eye cream, my therapist left the room, allowing me a few minutes to wake myself up and get dressed. The icing on the cake came when I was asked whether I wanted a blow-dry in the salon upstairs – at an extra cost, but one that is worth every penny. I practically bounced up the stairs into the salon chair – the perfect way to end the perfect treatment.
Results: Whilst chatting before the treatment, my therapist told me that my skin would be glowing after the treatment – and she wasn’t wrong. I looked like I had spent a week in a luxury spa, benefitting from copious lie-ins, a healthy diet, and litres of water. The fact that this result can be achieved from just one hour on the treatment bed is truly astounding – especially when the hour itself can be described as nothing less than ‘heavenly’. I would return to Michaeljohn in a split second – before a big event or simply when my skin needed a boost. I’m thrilled that I have finally discovered such a quick, indulgent route to skin perfection.
Price: £110 for 60 minutes.
Location: Michaeljohn, 25 Albemarle Street. London. W1S 4HU. 020 7629 6969. http://www.michaeljohn.co.uk/salon/
Blog: OUR GROOMING EDITOR – JAMES YORK – REVIEWS NEW FRAGRANCE DUNHILL 51.3 N (20.11.09)
Score: 5 Stars
Inspired by the quintessentially British hobby of gliding; this fragrance is named after its destination and spiritual home, London. Exclusively available at Harrods and designed with soaring in mind, the name 51.3 N is quite literally the latitude of our nation’s capital. Yes, you may have guessed correctly that I am picky enough to check such a claim.
I confess I was a little cynical about such an identity; I usually expect my aftershaves name to represent an adjective suggesting how amazing I will smell or how powerful I am to become after a couple of squirts. It’s a refreshing approach in more than just name - this fragrance is a beauty.
It works well for official, social and dating occasions. I have even had a couple of “you smell nice” compliments from the fairer sex, which is a kudos boost one just can’t overlook. 51.3 N would be a good buy for boyfriend, husband, father or brother because there is something here for all of us.
Like any high spec fragrance, I am supposed to rave about top notes, heart notes and base notes. But you don’t care about that technical terminology, do you? So I shall break it down for you, as any good DJ would. The first thing you meet in this smell is wonderfully crisp rhubarb; personally reminding me of those hard candy sweets I bought on the way home as a youth, by the quarter pound (nostalgia is my Achilles heel- just ask an ex). It is a comforting smell and as a man, I don’t think I have ever thought to say that.
Emerge from the refined opening and you meet the nuts and bolts of this mature fragrance; a combination of energetic pink and black pepper, lavender and cedar leaf. As you make your way into that 2pm meeting, the sandalwood and vanilla will polish off the package. Throughout, the composition of this rich and rewarding product knits together perfectly.
Dunhill have created the ‘dress suit’ of fragrances. Remarkably, this one can be worn anytime and would be money well spent the next time you glide to down to SW3.
It is confident, exciting and elegant in equal measure. Goodness me, it really is perfectly London.
Dunhill 51.3 N is available exclusively at Harrods, retailing at £32 for 50ml.

From nail varnish to eye shadow, this season’s must-have is a purple palette, and Clinique’s new Black Tie Violets 2009 collection is the perfect place to start. Girly rather than goth, the focus is on juicy raspberry tones and subtle splashes of wine and violet, all of which have been intertwined with soft, pretty pinks to create a mellow and easy-to-wear makeup range.
Lighter and brighter than some of the deep, dark plums currently gracing cosmetics counters, a gorgeous gateway to the collection is the Shimmering Stripes Powder Blusher in Tuxedo Plums. A limited edition compact containing four plummy-pinks: swirl each shade together, then sweep the pearlescent powder over cheekbones to create a rich, radiant glow. Feature: FROM CATWALK TO HIGH STREET (20.11.09)
Heart set on catwalk looks, but wallet stuck on high street prices? There’s no need to compromise… We’ve compiled the ultimate guide to designer looks on a tight budget. Get ready to stand out from the crowd.
THE LOOK: GIORGIO ARMANI
From Catwalk: The 80’s look is bang on trend this winter – and there are few more fashionable ways to get the look, than by recreating Giorgio Armani’s catwalk look? Think femme fatale - smoky eyes and a ruby red pout are the order of the day.
To High-Street: Head straight to high-street favourite Barry M. Celebrity Makeup Artist Amy Sachon says: “First, start by brushing Barry M Dazzle Dust in Tan (£4.50) over eyelids and blend well, removing any harsh lines. Next, apply Barry M Dark Chocolate Dazzle Dust (£4.50) into the crease and the outer corner of your lids and blend in with the tan base colour. Do the same with the Petrol Black Dazzle Dust blending together; you can also apply this eyeshadow underneath the bottom lashes for added drama.
“You will need a steady hand for the next part, carefully apply Barry M Kohl Pencil in Black (£2.95) to the inner lower lid of your lashes to frame the eyes and create a bold dramatic eye-catching look! Coat lashes with Barry M 3-in-1 Mascara (£5.95) to volumise, lengthen and curl completing this fashion focused trend,” adds Amy.
Finish by coating lips with Barry M Cherry Glitter Lip Gloss (£4.25) – a sexy, ruby red.
Top tip: When applying Dazzle Dust, hold a tissue under lower lashes to catch any stray flecks.
Available: Superdrug, Boots and www.barrym.com
THE LOOK: CHANEL
From Catwalk: The catwalks saw dramatic eyes framed by false eyelashes adorned with crystals and sequins – perfect for giving peepers that dazzling wow factor – teamed with talons painted in the brightest mint green.
To High Street: Try GOSH Crystal Lashes from Superdrug (£5.87) – or, for a more natural wink, opt for Naturalites from eylure (£4.85), which feel (and look) as light as a feather. If applying lash glue makes your stress levels rise to very un-fashionable levels then eylure’s recently launched Ready to wear Pre Glued Lashes (£4.85) will avoid a diva-esque crisis.
Superdrug has also rolled out a nifty line of 2True Crystal Couture gems (£1.91), which are perfect for adding a chic twinkle to corners of eyes.
For nails, try Barry M Mint Green Nail Paint to make fellow fashionistas green with envy (£4.50). And for trendy talons in a flash, nab a 17 Fast Finish Nail Polish in Peacock, (£2.88) for a 60 second makeover.
Available: Superdrug, Boots and online at www.barrym.com and www.boots.com
THE LOOK: DANIELLE SCUTT
From Catwalk: Renowned for ultra-feminine looks, this London designer gave models bright pink pouts.
To High Street: M.A.C. Makeup Artist Hannah Murray applied water-based (and water-resistant) Face & Body Foundation (£23) and sealed complexions with Prep & Prime Transparent Finishing Powder (£16.50) for a translucent, matte look.
For a pretty pout prepare lips with M.A.C Cream Colour Base (£12.50), then outline neatly with Beet Lip Pencil (£10) and finally pat on glittery Fuschia Pigment (£15). For a Betty Boop effect, frame the face with lashings of Zoom Lash Mascara (£12) in black.
Top tip: For beauty on a budget try e.l.f’s HyperShine Lip Gloss in Vixen and Flirt (£1.50). Infused with light-reflecting technology, this sheen claims to condition and shine for hours. Apply the gloss alone or on top of lippy.
Available: www.maccosmetics.co.uk and www.eyeslipsface.co.uk
THE LOOK: LOUIS VUITTON
From Catwalk: French fashion house Louis Vuitton sent models down the runway with statement lips in blue.
To High Street: Barry M Celebrity Makeup Artist Amy Sachon says: “Apply Barry M Blue Lip Paint (£4.25) with a precision brush for an accurate and precise finish. I'd suggest applying two layers to maintain a strong colour because blue is a brilliant shade, and you want to wear it loud and proud! For extra shine apply Barry M Cosmetics Lip Gloss Wand in Coconut Clear (£4.25) to give lips a gorgeous glossy finish. Keep the remainder of your makeup minimalist with a coating of black mascara so your lips are the key focal point, you're then set to paint the town blue!”
Note to trendsetters: 50 shades of nude nails strutted along the Louis Vuitton catwalks - who knew that being natural could be so versatile! Top brand e.l.f have several nifty nail shades in natural nuances for a bargain price of £1.50 – and, better still, they are infused with Vitamin E for a strengthening boost with a quick drying blend!
Available: www.barrym.com and www.eyeslipsface.co.uk
THE LOOK: TODD LYNN
From Catwalk: Canadian designer Todd Lynn, known for his sharp, androgynous designs, opted for sandy shades and shimmer sheens in desert and earthy tones for a futuristic spring look.
To High Street: Boots No7 Makeup Artist Lisa Elridge says: “Todd and I created a very earthy and matte feel, with splashes of modern shiny and luminous textures smudged around the eyes to give depth and intensity. The overall effect is a very polished, minimalist look with an edgy, modern feel.”
“The eyes are the real focal point of this look and what I have created is a softer take on the smoky eye look. With a large blending brush, apply a base across the eyelid. Use the middle colour from No7 Stay perfect Trio Eyeshadow in Good Earth, (£10) across the lids and sculpt the sockets and under the eye with No7 Stay perfect Earth Mousse in Fudge, (£9).
“To add intensity to the eyes add a light touch of No 7 extravagant Lashes Mascara, (£12) to the roots of the lashes and comb through. Next line the inner rim with No 7 Amazing Eyes Pencil in Brown, (£7.50), to give a real focus to the eyes.”
Available: www.boots.com
THE LOOK: LUELLA
From Catwalk: Ex-Vogue journo and hot British Fashion Designer Luella Bartley plumped for bright block eye shadows in red and blues.
To High Street: For a more wearable look, vegan beauty brand B Never Too Busy To Be Beautiful has put together a look known as Raspberry Rasta.
“Raspberry Rasta is a good-girl smoky eye with plenty of punch and is a great alternative to black or grey tones on the eye this winter. Inspired by Luella’s catwalk block colouring, this is really wearable for the evening,” says Charlotte Matheson, head makeup artist at B Never Too Busy To Be Beautiful.
“I highlighted above the brow for a Bowie-esque mood to the look, using B’s Bon Bon highlighter (£7.85). To create the graphic, clean lines on the eye shadow, my favourite trick is to use masking tape, remove this once you have shaded the area and you will always have a perfect line. I put lines against the nose for this look, which always makes the nose appear smaller – a great plus if you have a large nose!
“I blended Bordeaux eyeshadow (£8.30) over the entire lid and then used an angled brush to create a smoky line of colour under the lower lid, this adds to the sultriness of the look. Blend colour out towards the temples and smooth into the blusher for the ultimate in power cheekbones. Add some flirty false eyelashes and lots of kohl, and you will be smoking hot and ready to party.”
Top tip: This fab animal-friendly beauty brand will be closing in December…So wipe away those tears and get to the till quick.

Blog: CIONA JOHNSON KING - A-LIST MAKEUP ARTIST – GIVES TIPS FOR WINTER SKIN (13.11.09)
As the ice-cold rain and freezing winds batter the dilapidated windows in my
flat, those long, serene days of summer seem a lifetime away. Sitting by
the fire with a mug of tea and Nigella’s Christmas Kitchen on the box
might be cosy but let’s be honest, it’s hardly the Sandy Lane, Barbados.
Hence my love of the Winter fake-tan. It’s always seemed odd to me that as
soon as the calendar hits May, we spend so many hours and so much cash on
sprays, lotions and potions to get our bodies glowing for the beach
holidays. Sure, nobody wants to rock a Geisha girl white body on the sunny
shores of the Cote D’Azur, but with a bit of healthy protection, you’ll
probably be going naturally brown anyway.
Stuck indoors in the run-up to Christmas, however, and you’ve got about as
much chance of catching a tan as Louis Walsh has of winning X-Factor. So
it’s this time of year, much more than the hot sunny months, that a faux
glow really earns its stripes. For me, just the sight of a healthy brown
face in the mirror takes me back to balmy evenings and effortlessly lifts
the spirits. It’s a psychological thing as much as a physical one.
So here’s my recipe for that Summer-in-Winter sun-kissed visage. Trust me,
you’ll see and feel the difference, transporting your mind to the beach
quicker than a Baywatch box set.
First, we all know that skin needs a serious scrub before applying a tan
and Origins Never A Dull Moment Skin Brightening Face Polisher works
wonders with its luxurious richness and tropical fruit enzymes of papaya,
mango and apricot. Sian Lloyd can blabber away about frosts and freezes
all she wants, but one whiff of this and you’ll be halfway to the Bahamas.
Origins A Perfect World Body Cream will then smooth and hydrate your newly
radiant skin ready for the magic of their Faux Glow Self-Tanner. The
bronzing effect is almost instant – handy to spot the bits you’ve missed –
but it’s still beautifully gentle. The result? Comments of ‘Wow, you look
well!’ rather than ‘Didn’t you used to present Bargain Hunt?’
Yes, you may be still battling the chilly elements on the Monday morning
grind into work but in on your face and in your head it’ll be different.
Uggs morph into flip-flops, cardies into bikinis and gilets into sarongs.
The Winter might see the clocks going back an hour but a tan can rewind
things a whole six months.

Spa Review: NAIL GIRLS, ISLINGTON (13.11.09)
Location: Nail Girls, 50 Cross Street, Islington, London N1 2BA. 0207 3592772. www.nailgirls.co.uk
Facilities: Grab your address book and get ready to scribble in the hottest new address in town… Nail Girls - the chic new nail spa in London’s fashionable Islington – should be on every city girl’s speed dial. With splashes of neon pink, a menu packed with tempting ‘treats’, and shelves lined with row-upon-row of candy-bright nail polishes, the spa is best described as the adult equivalent of a sweet shop. Nail Girls is the creation of sisters Lynda-Louise, who left her job as a Fashion Editor and Stylist in New York, and Joanna, who previously worked in the high-flying world of recruitment. Inspired by nail spas in New York, which sit on every street corner, Nail Girls offers quick, affordable nail treatments to their growing legion of fans. As well as classic manicures and pedicures, the spa offers paraffin treatments, massages, masks, waxing, nail repair, extensions, gels, overlays and infills – along with indulgent ‘fingers & toes’ packages, which leave you looking beautifully preened and feeling incredibly pampered.
Ambience: Stepping into Nail Girls is like arriving at your best friend’s home. The welcome couldn’t be friendlier and the ambience couldn’t be warmer. If you fancy switching off, you can bury yourself in mountains of glossy magazines and endless mugs of tea. If you are catching up with a friend, you can sit and gossip to your heart’s content, with complimentary glasses of fizz. It has a wonderful community feel, with staff greeting customers like personal friends, and waving to regulars as they stroll past the window.
Treatments Tested: Nail Girls Signature Pedicure, £35 for 40mins.
I am often shocked by the prices that London spas charge for pedicures, so spotting that Nail Girls’ prices start at just £15 was a welcome surprise. I opted for the Signature Pedicure for a reasonable £35, which includes shaping, buffing, cuticle work, warm oil to open pores, exhilarating deep exfoliation, aromatic hot towels, leg/foot massage, and colour paint. The whole experience felt very pampering, relaxing, and luxurious. I was spoilt for choice when it came to colours, opting for a dark pink from this season’s new collection. My toes looked bright and brilliantly glossy – and the nail varnish stayed put for a good few weeks, which was impressive. I will definitely be back!
EXCLUSIVE OFFERS – Nail Girls are offering readers of The-Beauty-Pages.com an exclusive 20% offer on all treats, from Tuesday – Thursday. The offer is valid until 10th December 2009. Quote ‘The-Beauty-Pages.com’ when making your booking. Discount not valid on products.
Tried & Tested: NATURAL CANDLES (13.11.09)
We’ve tested six natural candles – free from paraffin, with bases of vegetable wax and pure essential oils – that promise to warm, relax or energise on cold winter days ahead…
NEOM REAL LUXURY CANDLE, £35 at www.neomorganics.com
What they say: NEOM Luxury Organics bring a touch of glamour to being green with a luxurious, eco-friendly range of organic treatment candles. They work as powerful holistic treatments as you breathe in the scented air so it is best to burn them for four hours at a time. Pamper yourself with lavender, jasmine and Brazilian rosewood.
The Results: It is easy to see why Real Luxury is the bestselling candle from the NEOM range. As with all the brand’s candles, it is seriously indulgent, weighing one kilogram, with a burn time of 55 hours and set in a chic glass bowl with three wicks. I was initially dubious about the claim of holistic benefits, thinking it wouldn’t be any more relaxing than a standard candle, so decided to test this when I was feeling particularly stressed. I was very pleased to be proved wrong! My room was quickly filled with the spicy, floral fragrance and I was surprised at how relaxed and soothed I felt in a short space of time.
Best for: Therapeutic benefits
GLOW URBAN SPA & BEAUTY SUNSET CANDLE, £34 at www.glowurbanspa.co.uk
What they say: Glow Urban Spa has teamed up with perfumer Jonathan Ward to launch the first collection of Glow at Home exclusive candles- The Shine Collection- to encourage calm living, positive thoughts and graceful moments. Sunset is a complex fragrance, which mixes the sensuality of woods and leaves tossed sporadically with herbs and a hint of pepper.
The Results: When I first heard that I would be testing a candle that incorporated patchouli, I was a little apprehensive as it has never been a scent that appeals to me. This candle completely changed that perception. The blend of different fragrances within the candle has been carefully considered and the collaboration with such a renowned perfumer has certainly paid off. The aroma is sweet and warming, yet maintains a luxurious quality that reminded me of spa visits. The double wick and unexpected choice of square glass container added to this impression and it’s now firmly positioned in pride of place on my bedside table.
Best for: Creating a home spa
ORIGINS GINGER, BERGAMOT & CARDAMOM CANDLE, £20 at www.origins.co.uk
What they say: Recharge the energy of any room with warm ginseng, spicy cardamom and uplifting bergamot. Features 100% pure vegetable wax which means this candle will burn clean and evenly for up to 55 hours.
The Results: I tend to light candles when I want to relax and unwind and had never tried an energising candle before. I lit this whilst I was getting ready for a night out and fell in love with the clean, zesty fragrance. I was short on time, but was impressed with how quickly the fragrance filled the entire room, despite being slow burning. The weighty candle is contained in a neutral, frosted white glass tumbler, which creates a very luxurious impact and would suit any style of decor. As part of the Origins Limited Edition Christmas collection, this won’t be in stores for long so I’ll be taking advantage and stocking up while I can!
Best for: Party girls
GREEN & SPRING RELAXING TRAVEL CANDLE SET, £18 at www.greenandspring.com
What they say: The Relaxing range from Green & Spring is inspired by aromatic kitchen herbs, with a blend of lavender, comfrey and rosemary essential oils to soothe and calm the senses. The candles are made from certified vegan ingredients that are sourced from sustainable and renewable crops and handmade in the British Isles.
The Results: I loved the packaging – it is very luxurious and definitely something I’d be delighted to receive as a gift. Beautifully presented in a box with signature Green & Spring bird logo, the candles themselves are somewhat small, however, with an estimated burn time of eight hours each and an intense, room-filling fragrance due to the high content of pure essential oils, they offer good value for money. They would be perfect for countering the effects of jet lag on long-haul trips.
Best for: Globetrotters
CRABTREE & EVELYN NATURALS UPLIFTING PINEAPPLE & GINGER CANDLE, £15 at
www.crabtree-evelyn.co.uk
What they say: Scent your home with the luscious aroma of this pineapple and ginger candle from the premium Naturals range, crafted from non-toxic natural plant waxes and beeswax for up to 45 hours clean-burning time.
The Results: When I was first informed that I would be testing a Pineapple & Ginger scented candle, I didn’t know what to expect as I tend to opt for traditional, floral fragrances and was concerned that it might be sickly sweet. I was pleasantly surprised. The delicate, fruity fragrance is uplifting and unexpectedly fresh. The amber glass pot might not suit everyone’s interiors but it meant that the glow from the candle was particularly soft and warm, which is ideal for this time of year. The wax is slow-burning and at just £15 I’ll be stocking up for cosy nights in over the winter.
Best for: Value for money
JO WOOD ORGANICS USIKU NATURAL SOY WAX CANDLE, £29.35 at www.beautyexpert.co.uk
What they say: This deeply aromatic, natural wax candle has a contrasting combination of sensuous smoky, earthy and spicy aromas to evoke the senses. Light at night to help warm your spirit with its heady vapours from the Far East and India, it will also combat lethargy after a hard day with invigorating hits of Cardamom. Light in the morning to help sharpen and stimulate the mind with a sharp infusion of Ginger.
The Results: As soon as I opened the box, the intense, spicy fragrance immediately hit me and I initially found it a little overwhelming. However, once I lit the candle, which is contained in a glass tumbler decorated with glamorous, whimsical designs, the high fragrance content diffused to effectively fill the room without being overpowering. The scent is warm, sensuous, yet invigorating - which means that it truly can be used any time of day and with an estimated burn time of 40 hours, there’s no need to choose when!
Best for: Aspiring rock chicks
Feature: BEAUTY BLOGGERS (13.11.09)
There’s a new breed of beauty journalists in town – and they are smart, savvy, and totally honest. We’ve spoken to six of the hottest beauty bloggers on the block…
BEAUTY JUNKIE LONDON
Link? - http://beautyjunkielondon.blogspot.com/
Who are you? A beauty junkie in London.
What was your inspiration? My blog started as an outlet for my long-lived obsession with beauty products. Ever since I was little I would spend my pocket money picking up anything beauty related. At the beginning of the year I had a bit of a brainwave from nowhere to start a beauty blog, to write about the various products that I loved or loathed and to honestly review new things that I tested. At the time I had no idea that there was already such a huge online beauty community out there!
Who reads your blog? I would say that my readers range from early 20’s to late 30’s, but of course everyone is welcome- all ages, male or female. At the moment I have over 1000 followers on Twitter and the blog gets between 2000 and 3000 hits a month.
What have you reviewed recently that you love? I recently reviewed the new L’Oreal Studio Secrets Resurfacing Primer and I love it. I have used it every day since I bought it about a month ago and it has made a huge difference to the staying power of my foundation, plus it helps prevent it from settling into the fine lines under my eyes.
Anything you’ve been disappointed with? Ironically, it was another L’Oreal product- the ‘Shimmering Highlights’ Shampoo and Conditioner. It irritated my sensitive scalp and left my hair limp, lank and flyaway.
What fragrance do you wear? I’m currently switching between Chanel ‘Chance Eau Fraiche’ and Narciso Rodriguez ‘Essence’, but I also love the classic Davidoff ‘Cool Water’ for Women.
Where do you get your hair done? Recently I have been going to Headmasters salons as there used to be one opposite my flat and they have a fantastic deal where you book either on the day, or after 6pm for a morning appointment the next day and it only costs £20 for a wash/cut/blow-dry. It is such a bargain, as last time I had my hair cut by the salon director, who would normally charge £60+ for his services.
Any tips for wannabe bloggers? Jump straight in! Start by writing about what you know – one of my first posts was just a ‘Top 10’ of my favourite products at the time. Write honestly and take criticism constructively, not personally.
MAKEUP TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS
Link? - http://makeuptrialsandtribulations.blogspot.com/
Who are you? I’m a solicitor by day. I started blogging earlier this year and starting taking it seriously in August.
What’s the best thing about beauty blogging? Firstly, people actually listening to my opinion and taking the time to interact with me via the blog. Secondly, as a reader of blogs, I love the fact that if you want to buy something costly, you will be able to find at least one review on it in the beauty blogging world.
What have you reviewed recently that you loved? The last review I did was for Anatomicals Help the Paw Handcream, which I absolutely ADORE. It smells like sweets and it soaks in immediately. I bought three and have nearly finished one already. Plus it's affordable - £1.95 in John Lewis.
Anything you’ve been disappointed with? Firstly, Skin Therapy Eye Makeup Remover from Wilkinsons. It stung my eyes and removed nothing. Superdrug Vitamin E Eye Makeup Remover Pads didn't remove anything either. However, it’s important that you don’t let one bad experience taint your image of a brand, as I have the Liquid/Cream cleanser and Eye Makeup Remover from the Superdrug Vitamin E range - and they leave my skin baby soft.
What is your dream beauty gift? It would be a pair of straighteners from GHD or another company who make straighteners just as well as them. My straighteners broke recently, so I've been wearing my hair curly - but I miss the no-fuss approach of straight hair.
Any tips for wannabe bloggers? BE HONEST about what you think. Nobody will tell you off for not liking a product. I've reviewed products on my blog that I didn't like and it helps other people gain a better picture of a product. Pictures also help, but don't underestimate how long it takes to get decent shots. Make sure you know how to use the macro function on your camera (the little flower button), otherwise you get a blurry mess and nobody can see how well you have applied your makeup.
COSMETIC CANDY
Link? http://cosmetic-candy.com/
Who are you? I’ve been blogging since 2006, but started Cosmetic Candy in October 2007, so it’s been just over 2 years (wow! longer than I thought!). I have a "normal" full time job, and lots of other projects on top of blogging. I am launching a number of other sites so perhaps it will be a full time job one day. Let’s just say my body only needs 4 hours sleep a night!
Who reads your blog? My readers vary a lot - I get girls who are as young as 16 and are finding out about makeup to start with- and one lady in her 60s! Last month we got just under 4 million hits.
What is the best thing about beauty blogging? I just love make up, especially when the technology of cosmetics and skincare shows advances - beauty blogging is my excuse for buying make up on a whim because I am "helping" my readers make an informed choice! I also love hearing from my readers, getting emails from them and just generally sharing new loves. I’m proud of how the blog has evolved and how it’s really grown, over this last year in particular.
Are there any negatives? I don't get much sleep! Also, there has been a lot of controversy recently about various blogging related issues, to do with PR, general negativity and a lot of "drama" if you like, which wasn't really around (or at least I wasn't aware of it) when I started my blog.
What are your all-time favourite beauty products? If I were to pick a few desert island essentials off the top of my head, I would pick Shiseido Eyelash Primer, Lancôme Art Liner, La Mer Crème Treatment Foundation, Urban Decay 24/7 Pencils and the Extra Silky Lipsticks from Cle De Peau. Shu Uemura Eyeshadows circa 2000 were the best shadows ever, like pure butter. There is an eye makeup remover from Softymo (Japanese brand) it’s the best eye makeup remover I’ve tried, and you get a big bottle for £6.
Any tips for wannabe bloggers?
1. Don't do beauty blogging specifically because you want freebies. You might get a few but it’s kind of obvious when someone is just out for the goody bags, it’s usually the one who runs for the cocktail sausages at a party.
2. Be original and have an opinion, but don't try to be controversial just to make a point. Don't feel pressured to copy what other people are doing. Don't copy other people’s text. Don't copy other people’s images. Don't just post press releases.
3. Be polite and professional. It doesn't matter if blogging isn't your job - having a public blog is a way of sharing your opinions and people will hold you accountable for your views. Sometimes people may offer constructive (or not very constructive!) criticism, sometimes people will disagree with you. That's life - nothing is more off putting than a self-absorbed moaner or someone who tries to bully others. Other people are entitled to their views and way of dealing with things. That’s all.
4. Write about your passion - if you write about what you love you never run out of things to say. I have written close to 2,000 posts and I don't think I have ever sat in front of the computer and thought, "I have nothing to say". When you write about what you enjoy, it’s easy to find the words.
MIZZ WORTHY
Link? http://www.mizzworthy.blogspot.com/
Who are you? I'm not a makeup artist, but I'm an expert consumer (at least that’s how I justify my purchases to my partner!) I love trying new products and telling people about what I think of my purchases, as well as showing people the things I buy. I find my day job stressful and unrewarding at times, but I love writing my blog. It’s the best hobby in the world, and I've met so many lovely people through doing it.
What is the best thing about beauty blogging? Trying new products, discovering new brands, and meeting like-minded people who are just as obsessed with makeup as I am.
Are there any negatives? The community is dominated by females and we tend to be our own worst enemies at times - outbreaks of nastiness can occur (not directed at me, just something I've noticed). Also there are certain brands that have latched onto the blogging phenomenon, send people products to try, and automatically expect a glowing review. That’s not how it works - bloggers are proud of the fact that we don't have the same pressures on us as magazine editors, who depend on advertising revenue. That means we can be honest about how well a product works, which helps other people decide whether that product will work for them.
What have you reviewed recently that you loved? Nude Skincare, which I was sent to review, and Laura Mercier foundation, which I picked up in Selfridges. I was also lucky enough to receive some items from Rouge Bunny Rouge to play with, which is very high quality.
Anything you’ve been disappointed with? I was asked to review press-on shadows from Sephora - I knew they weren't going to be great, but I was still disappointed with the outcome, and then when I found out the price (I think they were about £7) I was even more upset. I was hoping they'd cracked the "novelty gifts for teens" market, but sadly, it wasn't to be... Oh and I was disappointed with all the products from the Maybelline "mousse" range – they just didn't work for me.
Where do you get your hair done? I dye it myself at home, and I last got it cut about 6 months ago, I'm ashamed of my hair quite frankly. It’s the bane of my life...
What is your dream beauty gift? A trolley dash style shopping trip to the Selfridges Beauty Hall in London (make sure the NARS counter is fully stocked before I get there though please!)
Any tips for wannabe bloggers? Write about what you love and don't be afraid to be different - it makes you stand out in a sea of blogs about the power of MAC Sable Eye Shadow...
SIRVINYA
Link? http://www.youtube.com/user/Sirvinya
How would you describe your blog? Lots of beauty chat, pictures, swatches, reviews, hauls, rambles about my newest favourite thing. I’ve got readers from about 13 up. I’m getting 12000 hits per month, I’m trying to up that to 20000.
What is the best thing about beauty blogging? Meeting so many other likeminded women (and the odd bloke!). Getting to chat with them online and to meet up with them at events has been so much fun! Plus, I love the fact people are enjoying me rambling about makeup. And finally, getting the occasional message from somebody thanking me for helping make them feel good about themselves - I’m stunned I can have that effect on someone’s life.
What have you reviewed recently that you loved? I’m in the process of testing brushes from Sigma and I love them! Also, I loved the ELF Mineral lipsticks.
Anything you’ve been disappointed with? I’m pretty good at avoiding bad products, but I was disappointed with the Garnier Pure Active skincare range that I tried recently. It reacted very badly with my skin.
What fragrance do you wear? Dior Hypnotic Poison and Benefit Maybe Baby
What is your dream beauty gift? All the MAC collections for a year, along with whatever products that Urban Decay launch!

GET LIPPIE
Link? – http://getlippie.com/
Who are you? I work in finance, but I can see blogging becoming something I could spend a lot more time on in the months to come! Blogging, including the time spent on makeovers, usually takes about 8 or 10 hours out of my week, and Sunday afternoons are the time I get most done.
What was your inspiration? Get Lippie is something my friends have been encouraging me to do for years. I've been taking people shopping for makeup for several years, and have been advising people on application and colours to suit them for almost for as long as I've been wearing makeup myself! The blog is just an extension of that, really. I'm interested in showing how makeup can change someone's looks, as well as their outlook, and so I've been featuring makeovers on real women on a weekly basis, focusing on their specific and individual beauty requirements. I'm also interested in the more natural side of beauty, so every week I also focus on an organic brand of beauty, skin or haircare and review their products.
What have you reviewed recently that you loved? My Cloud Nine straighteners have been a godsend to me, I was previously wedded (and practically welded!) to my GHDs, but the C9s have halved my straightening time. I am seriously amazed at the difference, which I didn't think was possible.
Anything you’ve been disappointed with? Well, there was the organic manuka-honey based moisturiser that smelled like a fungal foot infection, or the body butter that made my other half think I was keeping a rotting corpse in the bathroom. Both got binned during their first test run!
What fragrance do you wear? I'm currently alternating between Jo Malone's Vanilla & Anise, which earns universal praise every time I wear it, and Tsi-La's Kesu when I want something a little more incense-y and sensual.
What is your favourite spa? I've spent a lot of time at the Sanctuary over the last few years, and I adore the space without particularly loving their treatments. However, my all time favourite spa-experience was at Hoar Cross Hall a few years ago (http://www.hoarcross.co.uk). I spent a week in my dressing gown, only getting dressed for dinner. A lovely experience, and one I'd love to repeat.
Any tips for wannabe bloggers? Write about what you love, and try not to take it too seriously. Even if you're just writing to amuse yourself, you'll be amazed how quickly you'll find people who share your interests, and will want to engage with you.
Feature: CELEBRITY BEAUTY (06.11.09)

- there’s a new breed of celebrity makeup, skincare, and body products making their debut on the red carpet.
TESS DALY

From Bath Soak to Skin Shimmer and everything in between, the Daly Body Collection was inspired by her frustration of not being able to find the perfect shimmering body moisturiser. “I wanted gorgeous body products that would give me glowing luminous skin that shimmered under the lights of the cameras, but still looked great in the daylight and wouldn’t break the bank.”
Hero product: “The Daly Face Glow – it makes you look like you’ve had 12 hours sleep, which I never get in real life. I use it under the brows and around the eyes.”
Which other celeb would you like endorsing your range? “She of the eternal glow – Jennifer Anniston!”
When and where: Exclusive to Marks and Spencer, Tess Daly’s bath and body range launched this October into stores nationwide and online at www.marksandspencer.com. Prices start at £7.50.

Range: K by Beverley Knight
Celeb CV: Soul singer, radio presenter and MBE honoured
Collection breakdown: A capsule collection of 15 products in 78 different colour ways, Beverley’s all-encompassing cosmetics range is tailored specifically for darker skin tones. Taking into consideration everything from the colour to the consistency of each formula, it was her struggle to find suitable products for her skin type and tone that that led to the birth of the brand. “I wanted to create a cosmetics line that would service women like me and provide the full spectrum of colours I needed, so I introduced a brand that includes everything from oil-free foundations through to eyeliners and highlighters.”
Hero product: “The base products. I'm especially proud of the foundations as they’re oil free and cater to the needs of darker skin – whether it’s those who need full coverage, an even tone or just a light foundation.”
Fellow celeb fans: Chaka Kahn and Jamelia
When and where: K by Beverley Knight launched in Selfridges this September and is now available in department stores nationwide as well as online at www.kbybeverleyknightcosmetics.com. Prices start at £10.

ELLE MACPHERSON

Comprising 13 products that are divided into three sections – Bare (everyday essentials), Glow (party products) and Self (me-time must-haves) – Elle’s main aim is to give women as much choice as possible. “We’re often told what to buy and who to be. My collection is based around trusting intuition and offering women choices depending on how they feel.”
Hero product: “Double Duty Cleanse and Scrub – it gives skin the attention it needs in half the time and keeps it looking beautiful.”
Beauty tip: “Always trust your instincts and listen to your body.”

GIRLS ALOUD
Range: Girls Aloud Lashes
Celeb CV: Reality TV stars, girl band members, pin-ups, actresses, presenters and all-round red carpet role models
Collection breakdown: Partnering with leading lash brand, Eylure, this summer saw Girls Aloud produce five pairs of limited edition lashes. Based specifically on the band member’s signature style, each of the girls put their own individual stamp on the designs, resulting in a collection that now offers false-lash fans a multitude of shapes and finishes. While Cheryl’s are dark with a delicate flick, Nicola and Kimberley’s focus on natural-looking length, Nadine’s are full, flirty and layered at the rim, while Sarah’s have a spiky style that give a full-on effect, however all are wearable and oozing with glamour.
Other cosmetic credentials: No stranger to bespoke beauty, Nicola is currently in the middle of planning a relaunch of her cosmetics line for fairer skin, Dainty Doll, while Cheryl was recently announced as the face of L’Oreal Elvive’s Full Restore range and has also been overheard talking about her fantasy of having a custom-made personal perfume...watch this space!
When and where: The Girls Aloud lashes cost £5 each and are available from Superdrug, House of Fraser, Debenhams, New Look and www.asos.com. For other stockists call 020 8573 9907 or visit www.eylure.com

Desperate to be involved in every step of the process, she even managed to incorporate her favourite colourways into the easy-to-use and affordable range.
Hero product: “The lip and eye palettes are really versatile and can be used to take your look from day through to night.”
Make-up must: “Lip-gloss.”
Where and when: The Coleen X eye and lip palettes cost £9 each and are available from selected Debenhams stores, The Fragrance Shop and www.argos.co.uk
Blog: BEAUTY JOURNALIST ABBY KNIGHT BLOGS ABOUT THE PRODUCTS THAT WILL BE GETTING HER THROUGH AUTUMN (06.11.09)
OK, apart from wall-to-wall Strictly and X Factor, I’ve found there’s another big plus to the nights creeping in – and that’s the chance it gives you to catch up on some beauty prep before the party season truly kicks in.
If like me, you’re addicted to spray tan: my current fav is Sienna X by Tan & Glo (07917 003695). If you’re in London, you might want to pop into to the new beauty room at the Sanderson where Victoria Beckham’s personal tanner is on hand to give you a spray tan to suit every occasion.
If you’re doing it at home, you should be giving yourself regular polish and moisturising treatments to be sure skin stays really soft and supple and your tan lasts longer. A friend recently gave me a tub of Ikove Chocolate Body Polish, a gorgeous new range from Brazil with real chocolate ingredients and now I’m hooked: it not only smells yummy but buffs away dry skin and old tan in a flash. £12.95 (www.ikove.co.uk). Apparently it’s what South American beauties like Giselle and Shakira rely on to keep there skin looking lush.
If, like me, your face has lost a lot of its inner glow now that autumn’s here, you might want to give Bionergjii Geranium Cream a go, £13.75 (www.energjii.com). New to skin care counters, it’s packed with geranium extract that’s particularly good for nourishing dry skin and the secret herbal blend that should help clear lymph glands - good news for hungover eyes!
On that note, when I was having my blow dry at my favourite Saks salon recently, I came across Youngblood Mineral Makeup. It’s been hot brand in the US for some time - Pussy Cat Dolls are big fans - and it’s the 100% mineral ingredients that grabbled my attention. I don’t have particularly sensitive skin but like the idea using makeup that’s good for your complexion while you wear it and the Hi Definition Mineral Perfecting Powder, £39.99 (www.dermapure.eu) does just that – it gives your skin a lovely flawless looking glow at the same time locking in moisture so makeup stays looking fresh and dewy. The Youngblood make-up artist Kelly Wiseman also gave me the insider tip on the Mineral Skin Primer, £39, which is silicone-free so gives you skin a soft sheeny finish but never looks greasy. And it makes the perfect base for lots of lovely autumn makeup! I’m busy mastering this season’s smoky eyes with just a hint of sparkle - checkout Myface Cosmetics new Blingtones, around £10 (Boots Nationwide) - tiny pots of heavy metallic colour that give eyes a lots of wet-look shine in just one hit.
And if you only invest in one beauty accessory this autumn, make it lash extensions. My best buddy Laura opened one of the first lash lounges in the UK and is busy lashing every one from Pixie Lott wannabes to ladies who lunch who just want to beef up skinny looking lashes and the money you save on mascara is amazing! She is Essex-based but can point you in the right direction if you’re looking to get lashes in your area, visit her at www.oohlaslashes.co.uk. Happy autumn!

TRIED & TESTED: SPARKLY LIPGLOSSES (06.11.09)
Outshine the sky this fireworks night, with our selection of sparkling lipglosses.
CLINIQUE LONG LAST GLOSSWEAR, £13 (www.clinique.co.uk)
What they say: This gloss provides long lasting, high-shine with the added benefit of SF15. Thanks to powerful film-formers that create a ‘seal’ holding the gloss to your lips throughout the day – it stays put for up to 8 hours!
The Results: I love this lipgloss! I tested ‘Mystic – number 18’ – fun, plum-coloured gloss, which was perfect for a night out. It has a thick texture, which stayed put throughout the night, and didn’t feel at all sticky. I was impressed when I saw the price, as I only needed to reapply once during the evening, so the tube would last a long time. The biggest bonus, however, is the sparkle – I couldn’t take my eyes off my own lips in the bathroom! As the light hit my lips they sparkled and shined – and so many people commented on it during the night! I’d recommend this – it would be great for the festive season.
Best for: Long-lasting shine
GIVENCHY POP GLOSS CRYSTAL, £15.67 (01932 233824)
What they say: This gloss is fine, light, and gentle – with a non-stop soothing effect. Forget sticky oily glosses that you’ve used before. This gloss combines moisturising texture and the exclusive Pulp Shine complex to make your lips appear striking, colourful and healthy.
The Results: I’m more of a lipstick girl so wasn’t looking forward to testing this gloss – at 45, I feel too old to wear it. However, it was a pleasant surprise from the outset. The packaging looks sleek and sophisticated and, on first application, I was pleased to discover that it didn’t give my lips a ‘wet look’, but more of a lightweight sheen. My lips felt soft and smooth, even after the gloss had worn off and the sparkle stayed put. I won’t be wearing it to the office, but I’ll definitely wear it whenever I head out in the evening.
Best for: Lightweight sparkle
DIOR LIMITED EDITION CRYSTAL BOREALIS, £55 (0207 216 0216)
What they say: Covered with faceted crystals, this oval locket is inlaid with 52 Swarovski stones, including 4 Aurora Borealis crystals. The bursts of light reflecting off the crystals create the colours of the rainbow, from radiant transparency to hues of blue and pink. The cover glides over the base to reveal a dazzling crystal gloss with an innovative and ultra-sparkling formula.
The Results: Wow! Not only is this the best lipgloss I have ever used, but it’s also the best piece of jewellery in my wardrobe! It goes with everything I own, which is handy as I always need lipgloss throughout the day and this way it’s permanently close to hand. The locket pops open to reveal a stunning gloss that I applied with my finger. It’s long lasting, non-sticky (even when kissing my man) and full of sparkles. I’ve had so many compliments about this necklace that I wouldn’t be surprised if it sells out fast. Definitely one for the Christmas wishlist!
Best for: Pure luxury
BENEFIT LIPGLOSS, £14 (www.houseoffraser.co.uk)
They say: These luscious new lipglosses glide on and deliver dazzling shine! There’s no sticky gunk here, only glimmering, shimmering lips and a gorgeous apricot-lychee scent.
The Results: The first thing I noticed about this lipgloss was the gorgeous scent - it really cheered me up on the way to work! The packaging is fun, whilst the applicator wand is soft and gives lips an even coverage. I’m always rushing around, so I throw my lipglosses in my bag and expect them not to leak – and this doesn’t, which is great. The colour itself is fantastic and packed with dazzling sparkle, which instantly added radiance to my face. One word of warning, though - this definitely isn’t the product if you are looking for a subtle look!
Best for: High impact
MAC DAZZLEGLASS CRÈME, £14 (www.maccosmetics.co.uk)
What they say: Ultra-luxurious, no sticky smack or drag. Aloe and Vitamin enriched for a long-lustre, lightweight look that’s the ultimate luminosity. Wear it alone for medium-sheer, dewy coverage.
The Results: This product is small and compact, fitting into even the tiniest handbags on a night out. The gloss itself is thick, but not heavy, and gives great coverage that lasts all day without needing to reapply. I wanted the gloss to be noticeable, so I layered the gloss on heavily. I was very impressed with the shimmer – the gloss is packed with it and it looked great on my lips. I didn’t need to recommend it to friends – they saw the fantastic results for themselves and are now snapping them up themselves!
Best for: Thick coverage
GUERLAIN KISSKISS GLOSS, £18 (01932 233887)
What they say: Dazzle with KissKiss. It’s difficult to resist the magnetic sensuality of a KissKiss Gloss. It shows extravagance by multiplying glitter effects with reflections of light.
The Results: I loved the packaging - the metallic top and the black design give the gloss a classy and elegant look. What lays inside is even better! The gloss is lightweight, hydrating and full of sparkle. I used it alone – but it would look equally good layered over your lipstick to give it a sparkly finish. The applicator brush gives lips an even spread of the colour. It’s more expensive than I’d usually pay for a lipgloss, but my lips felt so soft and the gloss lasted so long that I’d happily recommend it – it’s definitely worth the money.
Best for: Velvety feel
Treatment Review: WY10 TEETH WHITENING, DR WYMAN CHAN (06.11.09)
What it promises: To lift the colour of natural teeth by up to eight shades, using a non-invasive heat technique and a whitening gel. Results last for up to two years.
What happens: I’ve had my teeth whitened before and remember it as quite an uncomfortable and painful experience. The first thing that struck me about Dr Chan’s Clinic, however, was that it didn’t feel at all clinical – in fact, it had more of a spa-like feel, with plenty of green plants, relaxing background music, and massage chairs as you fill in your consent forms. I was lead into the treatment room, where Dr Chan talked me through the procedure. I was going to have to wear a mouth guards filled with a special gel throughout, to allow the bleaching light to do its work, but Dr Chan’s assistant said I would still be able to swallow, which was a relief. Although I was hoping for Cheryl Cole-style whiteness, Dr Chan brought me down to earth by explaining that I could only realistically “lift” them around six shades lighter. I was then ushered into the reclining chair while Dr Chan fixed the mould into place - not the best experience, but I was pleased I didn’t feel any sensitivity when the gel was poured into place. Dr Chan had other patients to treat, so his assistant asked me to choose a DVD and then fitted me with gadget-like glasses that were meant to help me switch off whilst the treatment worked. This was easier said than done - you can swallow, but you do get a little bit of build up in the mouth - but I was checked on regularly, which was good, as this could be disconcerting if you were claustrophobic. After around 1½ episodes of Sex and The City, I was “cooked”. Dr Chan removed the mouthpiece and checked on my teeth before letting me see the results for myself in the mirror and giving me details of any aftercare – not that much really – just to drink water for the first 24 hours after treatment.
The Results: Dr Chan took me back to the teeth whiteness guide after treatment and I’m pleased to say my teeth had lifted to UK white smile levels - the shade most people aspire to, as it’s more realistic than the Hollywood-white version. Some patients are advised to also have the home whitening kit to boost results, I didn’t need this and was simply advised to keep my teeth regularly brushed and flossed so I could make the results last. The next day my teeth looked just as bright and white - and I think the price is fair for something that has the potential to lift your whole look.
