Feature: ORGANIC BEAUTY (31.10.08)
Want to take a more ethical and natural approach to beauty? We’ve taken a closer look at six brands offering organic products that are kind to the earth, ultra-effective, and really rather indulgent.
ORIGINS
The Brand: Origins has been a trusted name in natural products since 1990, but 2008 saw the much-anticipated launch of their organics range. Using ingredients free of parabens, propylene glycol, mineral oil, paraffin, and animal-derived extracts, the range became the first to be certified under the USDA’s (United States Department of Agriculture) National Organic Programme and recently gained EcoCert certification.
Lynn Mazzella of Origins explains, “The question always comes up as to whether or not organic products can be as aesthetically pleasing as conventional products. With Origins Organics, the answer is unequivocally yes! We have made no sacrifices to product efficiency”.
The Hero Product: Origins Organics Conditioning Hair Oil, £17 for 30ml (www.origins.co.uk)
Our favourite product in the newly expanded range is the Conditioning Hair Oil which is 98% certified organic. Applied to clean dry hair, this nourishing oil intensely hydrates locks with its organic sunflower, olive and sesame seed oils. Hair feels healthy, rejuvenated, and silky smooth after application, with a vibrant shine and divine natural scent courtesy of the lavender and peppermint extracts. The product is ideal for dry frazzled locks and those damaged and dehydrated by heat styling.
SUKI
The Brand: Suki is a line of 100% natural and organic skincare products, combining the best of science with traditional herbal knowledge. The brand was born when founder Suki desperately sought a line of products for her own skincare needs.
Having sensitive eczema-prone skin, yet finding little available that she could use, Suki began formulating small batches of the products for her own use. She explains, “One of my goals became helping people detox from harsh ingredients and pharmaceuticals as much as possible – and not only have great skin, but excellent long term health.”
The range is formulated ethically from 100% natural ingredients and feels deliciously high-end and luxurious.
The Hero Product: Suki Mini Skincare Kit for Combination/ Oily skin, £22.50 (www.asos.com).
What better way to get to know the brand, than by investing in the irresistible Mini Skincare Kit? The kit is packed full to the brim, including the Exfoliating Lemongrass Cleanser, Moisture Rich Cleansing Lotion, Concentrated Facial Toner, Facial Moisture Serum, Velvet Facial Crème, Delicate Moisture Body Oil, Velvet Hand and Body Crème, and Butter Cream Salve. The rich formulas will leave skin clean, invigorated and refreshed.
TREVARNO
The Brand: Where better to create a range of plant-based chemical-free products than at one of Cornwall’s most beautiful country estates? Trevarno started by producing luxury handmade soaps, but recently expanded the range to include lovingly crafted salves, face creams, and cleansers. Products are presented in stunning jewel-coloured jars and bottles, each entirely reusable.
The brand has Organic Certification. Lucy Clark, Skincare Manager at Trevarno Organic, confides that, “Gaining organic certification was an important decision, but by no means easy. It is really the Gold Standard of proving that our products are what they say they are – natural, organic, chemical-free, sustainable and ethical”.
The Product: Trevarno Organic Day Cream with SPF 15, £10.35 for 30ml (www.trevarnoskincare.co.uk)
The rose in Trevarno Organics crown is the Day Cream with SPF 15. Ideal for everyday use, this light cream melts into the skin without leaving a sticky film. It has a gorgeously subtle scent thanks to extracts of St. Johns Wort and Lavender Water, plus the handy handbag-sized pot can go wherever you do.
WELEDA
The Brand: Weleda was founded in 1921 by Dutch doctor Ita Wegman and the renowned philosopher Rudolf Steiner. The brand made the move to the UK in 1925 and continued to avoid artificial ingredients, using only raw materials from nature such as honey, plant extracts, and naturally occurring minerals. Many Weleda products hold the BDIH Kite Mark to certify they are naturally formulated.
Weleda can be found on the new green-focused lifestyle website Big Green Smile – an online store that stocks a vast selection of organic products, including best-sellers Burt Bees and Yes to Carrots. The company’s philosophy can be explained by Ben Wigley: “At Biggreensmile.com we believe that as well as looking after the planet, you also need to take care of yourself and so Well-Being at BGS was born! We launched in September 2008 and have put together a selection of fantastic products that don’t contain nasty chemicals and are as natural as possible. We have gone for organic, as well as vegan options and none of our products are ever tested on animals”.
The Hero Product: Weleda birch body scrub, £8.95 for 150ml from www.biggreensmile.com
Use it once and you’ll quickly fall head over heels for the Birch Body Scrub. Ideal for use weekly, this light, pale exfoliating scrub contains tiny grains of natural beeswax pearls to softly rub away dead skin leaving skin soft, smooth and silky to the touch. The relaxing scent of rosemary fills your bathroom and the leaf and plant oils support cell renewal without drying or disturbing the skin’s balance.
JO WOOD ORGANICS
The Brand: Jo Wood Organics launched in 2004 – an ultra-luxurious range of organic bath and body products. Jo Wood founded the range to compliment her organic lifestyle. She found organic food easy to find, but high-end organic beauty less so, so she fulfilled her own beauty needs by formulating the products herself at home from essential oils.
The founder explains, “If we work with nature, rather than abusing it, we all reap the benefits”. The range quickly became renowned and demanded amongst her circle of friends, before hitting the mainstream.
The range is now manufactured in Devon using only the highest-grade essential oils, plant extracts, and essences harvested from the best growing areas around the world. Products contain no artificial colours or fragrances, no sodium laureth, no parabens or pthalates, and no mineral oils or water.
The Hero Product: Jo Wood Amka Organic Bath Oil, £45 for 100ml (www.jowoodorganics.com)
For a luxurious bathing experience, try the Amka Organic Bath Oil. Amka means ‘to wake’ in Swahili and you’ll certainly feel revived by the delicious scent. The heart notes are Iranian rose and Egyptian jasmine – the top notes are neroli, bergamot, green mandarin and sweet orange – and the base note is cedarwood.
The oil contains 93.5% organically grown ingredients and is presented in a luxe decanter. Beauty doesn’t get much more indulgent.
INLIGHT
The Brand: Inlight was founded by a trained homeopath, doctor and herbalist to not only improve the skin, but to also help it to find its own natural balance. Formulated in the Cornish countryside, the range of bath and body treats contains only organically produced ingredients and are non-genetically modified, homeopathically friendly, and suited to both vegans and vegetarians. The range is also Soil Association certified.
Dr Spiezia, the brand’s Formulator and Scientific Director explains, “The very name Inlight comes from our intention to bring out each persons inner light, their inner beauty from within, as for us true beauty is nothing more than glowing, radiant health! The products we make help this happen.”
The Hero Product: Inlight Organic Restorative Body Butter, £30 for 60ml (www.beautique.com)
The Inlight Organic Restorative Body Butter is the highlight of the range and shouldn’t be missed. The soft buttercup yellow butter is made using soothing and richly hydrating oils, such as rose hip, coconut, olive, and jojoba. The cream is especially beneficial for expectant or new mothers, as it has a powerful fading and repairing effect on stretch marks, plus helps to prevent them forming if used regularly. Apply fresh from the bath for the ultimate body treat.
Tried & Tested: SPARKLY MAKEUP (31.10.08)
Who ever said that glitter couldn’t be glamorous? Make like the night sky this November 5th with some grown-up, but achingly stylish, sparkly makeup.
1. THE BODY SHOP SPARKLE EYE PALETTE, £18 (www.thebodyshop.co.uk)
First impressions: A chunky black eye shadow palette, with five sparkling autumnal shades. A small draw opens to reveal a double-ended applicator. A mirror is included for touch-ups on the go.
The Results: I haven’t worn glitter on my eyes for years, so was relieved to find five neutral tones when I opened the palette. The shadows are quite powdery and I ended up with shimmer on my eyelashes and even cheeks, but I was really impressed with the high-pigment – the colours are as rich on the eye as they are on the palette. I loved the fact all the colours complimented each other, so there were endless possibilities for blending. I’d recommend this palette to anyone who is slightly scared of taking the glitter-plunge – the colours are very grown-up and I’ve even been wearing them during the day.
Best for: Glitter sceptics.
2. CHANEL BRILLIANT EXTREME GLOSS IN RED SHINE, £17 (0207 493 3836)
First impressions: A raspberry red lip gloss infused with fine pale pink glitter. The packaging is very stylish and classic Chanel. The gloss is applied with a foam-tipped applicator.
The Results: I’ve always wished I was brave enough to step out the front door wearing bright red lipstick, but have never plucked up the courage. I was delighted when I tried this gloss – it gave my lips a lovely wash of red, but the sheer finish and subtle sparkle made it much softer and more wearable. I found it easy to apply, although the brightness of the shade meant I had to be careful to stay within the lip line. It doesn’t feel at all sticky and, brilliantly, lasted a good few hours before I needed to reapply. I don’t wear much makeup, but can now instantly glam up my look with this gloss.
Best for: A splash of colour
3. LEIGHTON DENNY HIGH-PERFORMANCE NAIL COLOUR IN ANGEL DUST, £10 (www.leightondenny.co.uk)
First impressions: A classic Leighton Denny bottle containing a clear nail varnish with fine silver glitter. A long slim brush that makes painting nails quick and tidy.
The Results: I used a lot of glitter nail varnishes in my youth and the overriding memory is of them being thick, gloopy, and impossible to dry. When I first brushed this clear gloss over my nails, I was relieved and impressed to find that it was ultra-thin and was touch-dry within a few minutes. The precision brush made it really easy to coat the nails – I just needed a few swipes for each finger and I was finished. The varnish is packed with silver glitter, yet it’s so fine that the look is very subtle and grown-up. I love the fact that it can be applied over coloured nails for a bit of extra glitz, or over bare nails for a subtle sparkle. I’ll definitely be using this polish again - it’s so quick and easy.
Best for: A quick glam-over
4) BENEFIT VALLEY OF THE STARS MINI IRIDESCENCE KIT, £22.50 (www.benefitcosmetics.co.uk)
First impressions: A pink-packaged kit, containing five cosmetics to add sparkle to your look. Three mini bottles contain ‘her glossiness’ (a pink ultra-shiny lip gloss), ‘moonbeam’ (a golden pink complexion highlighter), and ‘highbeam’ (a soft pink sheen for a dewy glow). The kit is completed by two shimmery eyeshadows.
The Results: This kit looks adorable – I’d definitely notice it on the shelf - and I love that it’s small enough to fit in the tiniest clutch bag. The products are perfect for adding a bit of shimmer to makeup for an evening out – it only takes a few seconds to sweep the moonbeam or highbeam across cheekbones, slick the gloss over lips, and touch up eye makeup with the sparkly shadows. The kit probably isn’t suited for everyday use, as the products are so tiny, but it’s perfect for carrying around in your handbag for those last-minute evening invites. I think it’d also make a brilliant gift and have been inspired for Christmas!
Best for: Touch-ups on the go
5) CLINIQUE TOUCH TINT FOR EYES IN GOLD GLIMMER, £12 (www.clinique.co.uk)
First impressions: A small clear tube, containing a gold shimmery eyeshadow with the texture of a very fine paste. Simple, but stylish packaging.
The Results: You only need to squeeze the tiniest amount of this product onto fingers, as a little goes a very long way. Initially it feels like a paste and smoothes very easily onto eyelids, but as soon as it makes contact with the skin it dries like a powder to give a lovely matte finish. The glitter is amazing – in the tube it doesn’t look very shimmery, but it bursts into life when you apply it. You certainly get a lot of sparkle for your money! The gold colouring kept the glitter looking very stylish and sophisticated. I’m very impressed and shall be investing in different colours for the festive season!
Best for: Glitter fans
6) RUBY & MILLIE A DECADE OF COLOUR NIGHT EYES, £14 (Available from larger Boots stores nationwide)
First impressions: An eye shadow compact, presented in a purple metallic pouch. Four high-glitter shadows are included – blue, gold, red, and green. A double-ended brush applicator and mirror is included.
The Results: My dark skin suits wearing colour, but I find it hard to find products that combine a bright hue with being sophisticated and grown-up. As soon as I saw this glittery compact, I was thrilled. The four shades are colourful, but look toned-down and quite smoky when applied to the eye. The brush applicator makes blending easy – I’ve had lots of fun mixing the different shades and have discovered that I can create dozens of different looks. The combination of glitter and colour might not go down so well in the office, but work fabulously for a night out.
Best for: Getting creative
Breaking News: TOM FORD ENJOYS ANOTHER SUCCESS WITH WHITE PATCHOULI (24.10.08)
After the incredible success of Tom Ford’s first fragrance, Black Orchid, the beauty industry has been fighting to get their hands on the designer’s latest launch. White Patchouli launched onto counters at the beginning of October and early reports suggest that it has literally been flying off the shelves. Mention patchouli and you would be forgiven for immediately thinking of free love and old ladies. However, as the starring note in Tom Ford’s new fragrance, it’s definitely sultry and dare we say, really quite sexy. “The bohemian spirit of Patchouli gives it a mysterious power but has also made it dark and heavy,” says the man himself. “I wanted to free Patchouli from that cliché and present it in a truly innovative way – sparkling, sophisticated, and clear”. He has succeeded. Patchouli, of the mint family, has never smelt so good. The fragrance is based around the ingredient Patchouli OrPur, which on its own smells of freshly crushed leaves. A blend of bergamot, white peony, and coriander gives the fragrance zest, whilst underneath rose absolute, night blooming jasmine, and ambrette seed follow to add depth. Immediately recognisable as a Tom Ford creation, the bottle mirrors that of its older brother, Black Orchid. Made from fluted white opal glass with details of 23 carat gold, this is definitely a bottle for taking pride of place on the dressing table. The fragrance is on shelves now, and retails at £56 for 50ml. Blog: Karla Zapolski – The Face of Supersoft Yoghurt & Red Berries Smoothies – Part 3 (31.10.08)
Well, Autumn has definitely arrived and I’ve already dug out my gloves and scarf ready to brave the elements! I don’t mind the cold weather - I love getting all wrapped up in my new winter clothes - but the harsh wind and rain can really put a dampener on my mood. It’s annoying spending time on your hair in the morning only for it to be whipped around and dried out by an autumnal gale! That’s where being the face of Supersoft’s Yoghurt & Red Berries Smoothie shampoo and conditioner comes in handy. It contains a yoghurt protein which really nourishes and moisturises my hair keeping it hydrated and smooth. The UV filter also helps to keep my colour looking radiant and shiny. People tend to forget that UV rays are harmful whatever the season, not just in the summertime, so I like to make sure my hair is protected against colour fade all year round. Since my last blog, I have featured in a full page article in Heat magazine and done an interview with my local newspaper, I’ve also had even more people recognising me around my hometown and my university campus! It’s a strange feeling having all this extra attention, but I’m not complaining, the whole experience is amazing. Speaking of amazing, I did another photoshoot with Supersoft recently and had so much fun. We did the shoot in a really kooky converted house, and worked with one of the best photographers around. He’s worked with superstars such as Caprice, Mary J Blige, and Teri Hatcher, and has recently done a shoot with Daniel Craig in the same location we were in. How cool is that? I was standing in the place where Bond had been posing just a few weeks before! The shoot went really, really well, and I got to wear a cool mix of vintage clothes and the latest high street fashions. I also got to meet Supersoft’s ‘Yummy Mummy’, Judith Katz. Jude was selected as the face of a different Supersoft product, the Supersoft Yoghurt and Lime Smoothie shampoo and conditioner, and I can see why they chose her - she has great hair and looks fantastic. We got the chance to chat about our experiences as part of the ‘Be Yourself’ campaign and it turns out she was as shocked as I was when she found out she had won. We both feel so lucky to be involved in this campaign, and wish we could be preened by hair and make-up artists everyday! I’ve tried to recreate a few of the looks the stylists gave me at home but there is still nothing like having someone pampering you for the day. I’m still studying hard at university and I can’t believe I’m halfway through this year’s first term already. I’ve been given lots of assignments to complete before Christmas so that should keep me occupied when I’m not busy with the ‘Be Yourself’ campaign. There is no better way to keep your feet on the ground than coming back from a glamorous photoshoot and having to start studying again! Find out what else Karla has been up to in a fortnight’s time…
Breaking News: DRAGONS’ DEN SUPPORTS HISTORICAL FRAGRANCE LAUNCH (17.10.08)
We’re all aware of the cyclical nature of fashion, but who’d have thought that thousands of years after its original appearance on the ‘market’ Tutankhamen’s favourite fragrance would be back in style? Thanks to the ingenuity of perfumer David Hunter Pybus and a crucial backing by Dragons’ Den entrepreneurs, fragrance fans can now step centuries back in time with just a quick spritz of perfume. Backed by Peter Jones and Theo Paphitis, the perfumer has recreated four historic fragrances – the Scents of Time collection. The range features Nenufar, a commanding blend of blue lotus water lilies, which was once worn by the Egyptian Pharaohs; Pyxis, a floral, fruity, spicy formula made using natural ingredients documented to have been found in Sperato’s garden in Pompeii; Ankh, cleverly recreated using an ancient recipe found at Edfu on the Nile; and Maya, derived from a fragrance acknowledged to have been used at Mayan sacrificial ceremonies. Pybus is passionate about fragrances and has spent years studying the very beginnings of the art of perfumery. With the help of a talented team of archaeologists, historians and perfumers, he rediscovered the secrets of how the ancient civilisations stayed smelling sweet. He is hoping that his business will emulate the success of Dragons’ Den backed Levi Roots and his Reggae Reggae Sauce.
The fascinating natural fragrance range is on shelves at selected John Lewis stores now. Nenufar, Pyxis, Ankh and Maya are priced at £45 for a 50ml bottle and £60 for a 100ml bottle. For stockist information call 08456 049049.
Spas & Treatments: ST BRIDES SPA HOTEL (October)
Location: St. Brides Spa Hotel, Saundersfoot, Pembrokeshire, SA69 9NH. 01834 812304. www.stbridesspahotel.com
Facilities: There are few spas in the UK that can boast a view and location as awe-inspiring as St. Brides Spa Hotel in Pembrokeshire, Wales. The hotel – chic and modern, yet very luxurious – knows it too. The best rooms enjoy balconies with stunning views of the beach below, while meals taste that little bit better when eaten overlooking the ocean. Without the spa, this hotel would still be well worth the journey – the fact that it is there should prompt you to instantly pick up the phone and make a booking. St. Brides has been crowned the first platinum Comfort Zone spa in the UK, treating guests to travel-sized products in their rooms and making use of the luxe Italian skin care brand in its range of tempting treatments. The spa facilities are exceptional – wander downstairs in your fluffy robe and slippers to experience the famous Vitality Pool (when the tide is in, it will seem like you are reclining in the ocean itself) and the inviting Thermal Suite (a salt-infused grotto, herbal steam room, rock sauna, sensation showers, and ice fountain). Enjoy a pampering treatment or two – better still, convince your partner to join you and take advantage of the double treatment room, with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the beaches below.
Ambience: This is ‘Seaside Luxe’. On the one hand, there are no stuffy dress codes, children mill around happily, and the staff are cheerful and talkative. On the other hand, the spa is both tranquil and truly luxurious, food is top quality, fine art adorns the walls, and service throughout the hotel is impeccable. St Brides is the place to head when you need to relax and be pampered – but there is plenty of energy around the place to keep you occupied when the batteries are recharged.
Treatment Tested:
Comfort Zone Hydramemory Facial, £55 for 55 minutes.
After discussion with my therapist (who recently won Therapist of the Year at the Professional Beauty Awards no less) we decided to go with the Hydramemory Facial, which would replace much-needed moisture in my skin. She started by cleansing, toning, and exfoliating my skin gently with luxurious Comfort Zone products – they smelt divine and instantly relaxed me. While a mask was left on my skin, I enjoyed a heavenly scalp massage. The treatment was finished with a rich application of moisturiser and eye cream, leaving my skin glowing.
Comfort Touch Full Body Massage £60 for 55 minutes.
I enjoyed every second of this indulgent treatment – the perfect choice for de-stressing on arrival at St Brides. Using Comfort Zone Tranquility Oil Blend, the therapist used strong deep strokes (she checked my preference of pressure before we started) to send my body into a deep state of relaxation. I found it hard to stay awake as she worked on my back, neck, legs, arms, feet and hands. I’ve been lucky enough to enjoy lots of massages in the past, but I can honestly say that this is one of the best.
Rooms start at £140 per night. Spa packages start at £310 for two nights. Entry to the Thermal Suite and Vitality pool costs £25 for residents, but is complimentary with the booking of a treatment, and £45 for non-residents.

TRIED & TESTED: FACE MASKS (24.10.08)
Get ready for the winter months ahead with a luxurious face mask.
INA CRYSTALS WHITE GOLD PURIFYING FACE MASK, £35 FOR 100g (www.spacenk.co.uk)
What they say: The rich mixture of minerals and nutrients in the Himalayan White Gold Crystal Salt, together with the essential oils, china clay and the moringa seed extract, help to purify and deep cleanse the skin, leaving it radiant and feeling revitalised.
What we say: Simple but stylish packaging, containing a creamy clay mask infused with basil, fennel, juniper, and Himalayan Crystal Salt. The fragrance is fresh and clean. Leave on for 15-20 minutes.
The Results: My skin is best described as ‘problem’ – I always have a few blemishes and it lacks any radiance. I was thrilled to be given a purifying mask to test. I read on the packaging that the mask contained Himalayan Crystal Salt, so was expecting it to feel quite rough on my skin, but that wasn’t the case at all – it felt gorgeously smooth and silky. Almost instantly, I felt a tingling sensation, which lasted for the whole 20 minutes. It felt pleasant and meant that I knew it was working. After washing the mask off with a warm flannel, my skin felt far softer and smoother, which lasted for at least three days after use. Betters still, my blemishes have cleared up and my skin looks better than ever.
Best for: Problem skin
DR. ALKAITIS ORGANIC UNIVERSAL MASK, £55 FOR 100ML (www.alkaitis.co.uk)
What they say: A nourishing and rejuvenating mask for all skin types including the sensitive, mature, inflamed, or otherwise damaged.
What we say: A powdered pale green mask, that needs to be mixed with water before application. The fragrance of freshly cut grass. Leave on for 10-15 minutes.
The Results: I found it quite difficult to mix the powder with water and ended up making a bit of a mess. However, that was the only down side and it was well worth the effort – I loved this product! The mask felt feather-light on the face – I quickly forgot about it and carried on tidying the house, so it’s great for people that like doing three things at once! I found it really easy to wash off and it didn’t leave any residue on my face or the sink. My skin felt instantly softer, but the results got better and better as time went on. My skin is glowing, smooth, and radiant. Better still, I know I’m putting something that’s natural on my face. I’ll definitely be using it once a week from now on.
Best for: Natural skin care
ELEMIS PRO-COLLAGEN QUARTZ LIFT MASK, £45 FOR 50ml (www.timetospa.co.uk)
What they say: This luxurious cream mask combines the power of Quartz with Padina Pavonica, adaptogenic Noni, Moringa and Argan Tree Oil to instantly uplift and hydrate the skin, minimising the signs of ageing for a more youthful, firmer appearance.
What we say: A sleek silver pump bottle, containing a white mask with the texture and scent of a rich moisturising cream. Leave on for 8-10 minutes.
The Results: I didn’t look after my skin in my youth (too many late nights and a sporadic skin care regime) and it’s starting to show. My whole face needs a bit of a lift, with wrinkles appearing around my eyes and mouth, but I’m lacking the funds and confidence to do anything too drastic. I couldn’t wait to try this mask – it looks great and I loved the rich texture of the cream. It smoothed easily over my face and felt very soothing. After 10 minutes, I removed the cream with a flannel and patted the skin dry. I wasn’t expecting dramatic results and I didn’t get them – but I did notice that my eyes look lifted and skin looked radiant. The best results come with continual use – after a month of using the mask, my skin definitely looks plumper and still has that lovely glow.
Best for: Anti-Ageing
LANCÔME HYDRA INTENSE HYDRATING GEL MASK, £28.50 FOR 100ML (www.lancome.co.uk)
What they say: A bath of hydration to ‘quench the thirst’ of even the most dehydrated skin. With extracts of ‘Imperata Cylindrica’, an incredibly drought-resistant southern plant, this mask helps the skin to maximise its level of natural hydration. Skin is velvety smooth, fresh, and drenched in water.
What we say: A pale blue tube containing a clear gel mask with a relaxing fruity fragrance. Leave on for 5 minutes.
The Results: I’ve used face masks in the past and always found them quite messy, so was pleasantly surprised by how easy this product was to apply. The gel consistency meant that the mask smoothed easily and really quickly onto skin. Once applied, the relaxing fragrance and soothing sensation transported me straight to the treatment room of my favourite spa. After five minutes, I simply wiped off the excess with a tissue. The results were amazing – my skin felt much smoother and looked glowing for the whole day. I would thoroughly recommend using this product to boost skin before a special event or night out – it’s quick to use and leaves skin looking radiant.
Best for: Quick results
CHANEL PRÉCISION ESSENTIAL REGENERATING MASK, £110 FOR 50g (0207 4933836)
What they say: This infinitely luxurious mask offers your skin complete and utter relaxation. Inspired by its desire to prolong those moments of well-being that bring out all our beauty, Chanel Précision has created the Sublimage Masque. At the heart of its formula is the combination of a relaxing complex and Planifolia PFA.
What we say: Ultra-stylish packaging, containing a clear jar of creamy face mask. A small brush and pearlescent spatula is included in a black velour pouch. The mask has a slight sheen and a light floral fragrance. Leave on for 10 minutes.
The Results: I was more than a little impressed when I was handed this product to test - beauty doesn’t come much more stylish than this. I loved the thick creamy texture of the mask and the gorgeous fragrance, which reminded me of fresh lilies. Smoothing it over my skin with the small brush was a real pleasure – it made application easy and felt very soothing as it went on. After 10 minutes, I used a tissue to remove traces of the mask that hadn’t sunk in. My skin felt divine – soft, smooth, and totally pampered. The product isn’t cheap, but I used very little, so the jar will last and last.
Best for: A luxurious treat
URBAN RETREAT HYDRATING MASK, £19 for 175ml (www.beautique.com)
What they say: A lightweight, versatile gel mask that cools, smoothes and plumps as it drenches the skin with moisture. Pomegranate oil in the mask provides anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits while helping to strengthen the epidermis and reduce fine lines. Hibiscus seed extract cools and tightens, and Pumpkin enzyme gently breaks down the dull skin cells, leaving it looking fresher and feeling softer.
What we say: A large jar containing a face mask that falls somewhere between a cream and a gel. Delicately scented of roses. Leave on for 10 minutes.
The Results: I have dry skin and the winter months really take their toll on my complexion. I’ve been thinking about adding a mask to my skincare regime, so testing this product was perfect timing. Smoothing the thick mask over my face felt amazing – soothing, cooling, and really luxurious. I applied a generous layer and put my feet up for ten minutes. The delicious fragrance made it all the more enjoyable. I washed the mask off with a warm flannel – it took a while, as the mask is thick and quite sticky. My face usually feels tight after washing, so I was delighted when it felt hydrated and plumped. I’ll be using this mask throughout the winter – and thanks to the generous-sized jar, it’ll definitely last.
Best for: Dry Skin

TREATMENT REVIEW: ESPA HOLISTIC STRESSBUSTER (October)
What it promises: When the going gets tough, there’s nothing better than retreating to a spa and letting the professionals knead your woes away. Pick the ESPA Holistic Stressbuster and you’ll be left feeling calm, revived, and ready to face the world again.
What's happens: This delicious 1 hour 40 minute treatment is available at spas nationwide. I chose to have mine at the Spa at Chancery Court, a luxurious retreat just a stone’s throw from the busy pavements of central London. There couldn’t be a better place to book into when you are feeling stressed – it would be near impossible to worry when wrapped up in your fluffy gown and reclined in the candlelit relaxation room before your treatment. My therapist soon came to collect me, ushering me into the dark treatment room and inviting me to dip my feet into a warm bowl of fragranced water. As I relaxed, she asked about my schedule for the rest of the day – I would be rushing around and needed a boost of energy – and picked out a couple of body oils for me to choose from. My favourite, an energising citrus mix, was set aside for the treatment. After climbing onto the towelled bed, my whole body was brushed and then exfoliated. It was at this point that I became aware of the music in the room – classic piano concertos, often dramatic – a refreshing change from the serene soundtracks usually played during treatments. After a quick shower to cleanse my skin, I was back on the bed and enjoying the most fabulous deep massage using my chosen oil. Hot stones were placed on key energy points and used throughout the massage, which covered my whole body, face, and scalp. It wasn’t a quick process – I was there for what seemed like hours, which gave my mind ample time to fully unwind.
Results: I usually leave spas and immediately make a beeline for my bed, but I was pleasantly surprised to find myself feeling alert and revived after climbing off the treatment bed. My mind felt settled and totally unwound, yet my body was energised enough to carry on for the rest of the day. As an added bonus, my skin felt beautifully soft and smelt divine. If you need a boost, this is definitely the treatment to book.
Price: £135 for 1 hour, 40 minutes

FEATURE: WHEN BEAUTY GOES WRONG (17.10.08)
Hate your fringe? Streaky fake tan? Squeezed a spot? Hair dye disaster? Overplucked your eyebrows? Broken a nail?
We’ve gone head-to-head with the most common beauty misdemeanours to show you how to deal with the disasters.
Spot the difference
The Crime: You’ve squeezed a spot and made it ten times worse.
The Punishment: Red, blotchy skin, oozing pimples and possible scarring.
The Penance: From day dot we’re told not to pick and squeeze spots, but when a big fat faux pas emerges on your face, hours before the party of the year, all logic and reasoning goes out of the window, your main objective - to remove the unsightly imperfection before it erupts. Fast forward five minutes and what you’re left with is a total mess, but fear not, it doesn’t have to stop the belle going to the ball. Founder of ethical skincare range Face Boutique- Sarah Vorbach suggests holding an ice cube over the spot for a minute or two to immediately reduce swelling and redness. ‘Then, either apply a drop of witch hazel extract to the spot or smooth over some face boutique spot less blemish gel which contains witch hazel - this is a natural anti-oxidant which will kill bacteria and prevent the spot from becoming infected.’ Make-up artist Jemma Kidd suggests using cover-up, which will keep blemishes out of sight. ‘Apply a matte concealer with your fingers and blend around the breakout using a brush. If you’re applying concealer over a foundation, make sure you pat it in lightly to avoid wiping off the foundation underneath. Cover the spot with an ultra-light translucent powder to prevent shine and set the concealer.’
The Products: Face Boutique Spot Less Blemish Gel, £10 (www.spacenk.com), Jemma Kidd Concealer Duo, £11, and No 7 Calm & Conceal Dual Ended Blemish Stick, £8.75 (both www.boots.com), and Clarins Translucent Powder, £26 (www.clarins.co.uk).
Not so fringe benefits
The Crime: You’ve had a fringe cut in and it doesn’t suit you.
The Punishment: Having a hairstyle you hate that will stay with you until it grows out.
The Penance: For the past few seasons, there’s no denying fringes have been at the forefront of hair trends. From thick blunt bangs to long side-sweeps, hairdressers everywhere have been urging us to take the plunge and re-visit the haircut we haven’t sported since our pre-teen years. You refuse to be left behind in the style stakes so succumb to the chop, but leave the salon with a total fringe fiasco. Luckily, Indira Schauwecker TONI&GUY International Artistic Director says it’s not all doom and gloom. ‘If you’ve gone for the heavy fringe there are a few things you can do to make it more manageable. The weight of the fringe can be tricky, so perhaps visit a salon and ask them to thin it out or cut it to an angle, so you can pull it over to the side more easily. Accessories are a great way to disguise unwanted fringes, so use grips or Alice Bands to clip or push back the fringe whilst it’s growing out and you could even try a quaffing style by twisting the fringe, pulling it straight back off the face and then pushing it forward before clipping, to add some volume.’
The Products: Label.m Smoothing Cream, £11.75 is a great prepping agent whilst their Frizz Control Serum, £11.75 (TONI&GUY salons nationwide) will tame hair and de-frizz flyaway fringes. Hair grips, £1.29 (www.superdrug.co.uk).
Make or break
The Crime: You’ve grown your nails and one has just broken.
The Punishment: Uneven nails and jaggedly edges.
The Penance: Something even the most well-groomed beauty queens seem to struggle with is the ability to grow their nails. Whether it’s because of a bad biting habit or they’re too weak to withstand everyday wear and tear, it can take months of nurturing and good practice to produce ten flawless talons. Which is why it’s so frustrating when, on your way to that extra special event, you go and break a nail. But who says you can’t heal such horrors? Leighton Denny, nail technician to the stars explains that if you do break or crack a nail, it’s not the end of the world. ‘Ideally you should cut them all down shorter and let them grow to one length again but if you just have a crack in your nail, the best home fix is to apply a small amount of pharmaceutical nail glue. While it’s still wet, place a small piece of tissue onto the nail and then apply another drop of nail glue, wait till that dries and then gently smooth over the repair with a soft nail buffer. Apply your favourite nail colour to hide the repair and this should hold the crack until it grows out.’ Marian Newman, celebrity manicurist agrees, but suggests if you can’t get your hands on any nail glue, use clear nail varnish instead, ‘this will make the tissue transparent and hard which will hold the break for the evening.’
The Product: Cosmopolitan Nail Glue, £2.95 (www.superdrug.co.uk), Nail Block, £4 (www.thebodyshop.co.uk) and UR Metallic Polish Duo, £9.95 (www.boots.com).
Fake tan tragedy
The Crime: You’ve applied fake tan and it’s gone super streaky.
The Punishment: Patchy problem areas that are impossible to disguise.
The Penance: With summer a distant memory, everyone’s skin palette is starting to look a little pale and pasty, so what better way to give yourself an instant glow than with a layer of fake tan? No longer reserved for the sunny seasons, this failsafe solution will leave you looking like you’ve spent a week in St Tropez - or will it? Not the easiest product to apply, it’s a common crisis that halfway through the day you suddenly notice your tan turning streaky and have to race home and wait for it to fade. Forget cowering inside. Fake Bake celebrity tanning expert Lisa Fulton reveals that using light acids such as chlorine and citrus on the skin can strip a tan if you’ve made a mistake. ‘If you can face it, go for a swim or alternatively, use lemon juice in the shower followed by a good body polish containing loofah particles. An exfoliating mitt can also help to remove tan build up and streaks.’ Joanne King, Head of Beauty at Urban Retreat also suggests applying your tanning lotion in a certain way. ‘Use small, circular motions rather than strict, vertical movements as this technique leaves a tan less likely to stripe or streak. Keep skin deeply hydrated post-tanning and moisturise around your underarm as this is an area that tends to collect fake-tan.’
The Products: Urban Retreat Exfoliating Body Scrub, £12, and Soltan self-tan mitt, £3.49 (both at www.boots.com), Fake Bake Skin Smoothie Body Spritz, £12 and Original Lotion, £24.95 (both at www.hqhair.com).
Far too high brow
The Crime: You got tweezer-happy and over-plucked your eyebrows.
The Punishment: Looking as though you’re constantly surprised thanks to your high brow arches.
The Penance: Power brows are back and they’re even bigger and bushier than before, yet we still refuse to surrender our beloved tweezers as we continue in the quest for a perfectly symmetrical pair of brows. The ‘Pringles’ of the beauty world, once you start plucking you just can’t stop. Then, within a matter of minutes, you’re left with one fine line of solitary hairs you suddenly realise is meant to constitute your eyebrow. The worst bit – you have to do the same with the other. Eyebrow expert Shavata says ‘If you do over-pluck, don’t try and rectify it by continuing to remove more hairs. The only solution is to stop and let your eyebrows grow back completely and then go for a professional shaping. Whilst your brows are growing back you can fill in any gaps and create the illusion of fuller, more even eyebrows with a Brow Perfector which contains a selection of blendable brow shadows.’ Rachel Wood, celebrity make-up artist, explains how you also need to take into consideration what hair colour you have, and how and where you’ve over-plucked. ‘Benefit’s Brow-zings comes in three colour-ways and has a slightly waxy, powdery texture which will help to fill in your brows. You could also use something like the She Laq which is a make-up sealant so will keep your pencilled-on eyebrows last longer.’
The Products: Brow Perfector, £19.95 from Shavata Brow Studios (www.shavata.co.uk), Benefit She Laq, £18.50 and Brow zings, £21.50 (both www.benefitcosmetics.co.uk).
Hair dye dilemma
The Crime: You’ve dyed your hair and can’t stand the colour.
The Punishment: A head-full of hair in a hideous shade.
The Penance: An easy way to update your hair is with a splash of colour, and compared to chopping inches off your locks, it’s often considered the safest option. Unfortunately, a salon colour doesn’t come cheap, but with so many home-dye kits on the market you can have your pick of the pigments. However, there’s always that added risk that your new hair colour could suddenly turn from a ‘ta-da’ moment into an ‘arrgghhh’ moment. Clairol’s Creative Director, Sean Tetlow says that if you follow all the shade and tone guidelines on the packaging, you shouldn’t end up with a colour disaster but if you do, you mustn’t panic. ‘Don’t try to cover it up with a further DIY colourant - at this point, the only option is to seek the advice and services of a good hairdresser who’s an expert in colour to carry out a ‘colour correction’ for you. This is not as simple as covering one colour with another, or lightening a shade that is too dark and occasionally, after a disaster colour, it may take more than one visit to your hairdresser over several weeks to achieve exactly the colour you want. As a general rule, always choose a shade no more than two shades lighter or darker than your natural hair colour when using a home-dye kit.’
The Products: If you’re feeling brave, choose Clairol’s nice’n easy permanent shades, £4.99 or if you’d prefer to play it safe, opt for the nice’n easy non-permanent dyes, £3.49 (Available at Supermarkets Nationwide).
TRIED & TESTED: HAIR STRAIGHTENERS (17.10.08)
Fancy upgrading your hair straighteners? We’ve put six of the newest models through their paces.
TONI & GUY SACHA MASCOLO PROFESSIONAL SIGNATURE STRAIGHTENER, £69.99 (www.hot-uk.co.uk)
What they say: The ultimate hair straightener – designed to offer versatility, control and protection. The Professional Straightening Iron is the only electrical styling iron with Sacha’s stamp of approval.
What we say: A lightweight black styler with thin ceramic plates. Presented in a black zip-up storage pouch, which unfolds to become a heat-resistant mat. Five heat settings.
The Results: My first impression of these straighteners was great – they look really stylish (even the ceramic plates are black) and felt light and manageable. My hair has a natural wave and needs quite a high heat to become poker straight, so I switched them to the top setting of 200°C and waited roughly a minute for the red light to glow steadily. I’m really impressed with how quickly they straightened the hair – apart from the odd ultra-curly strand, I only needed to pull them once through my hair to get a really sleek result. It’s going to make getting ready so much quicker in the morning!
Best for: Quick results
Designed to create vintage waves or super sleek tresses.
ghd IV STYLER, £119 (www.ghdhair.com)
What they say: The ghd styler is all you’ll ever need to create perfect curls, movement, volume, and straight hair, thanks to its advanced technology and smart features. It’s so versatile, you’ll be creating sensational new styles every day! What we say: Thin black stylers with yellow ceramic plates. Impressively lightweight. One heat setting. DVD and instruction manual included.
The Results: My hair is somewhere between curly and straight, so I use straighteners every day to tame it after blow-drying. I’ve never used ghd’s before, so was keen to find out what all the fuss was about. I was impressed by how quickly they heated up, after only 30 seconds, and even more amazed when they perfectly ironed out the kinks with one sweep. I read in the instruction booklet that they would shut down after 30 minutes if you accidentally let them on – I tested this and it worked. After a few weeks of straightening, I’m now trying my hand at creating curls and waves in my hair, which is suprisingly easy to do. I’d strongly recommend investing. Best for: Getting creative
BABYLISS PRO 230 RADIANCE, £100 (08705 133191)
What they say: Babyliss Pro 230 Radiance uses Breakthrough Cera-Heat straightening technology, using a supercharged heating system to give salon straightness for twice as long. Ionic steam enhances the hair condition and eliminates frizz for a high-shine finish. Up to 230° C with ultra-fast heat recovery for constant high heat. What we say: Stylish red straighteners with wide ceramic plates, presented in a red heat-protection pouch. A mat is also included. Five temperature settings, with a top heat of 230°C, and a beep when they reach desired heat. Detangling fins can be activated. The stylers can be topped up with water and the steam setting activated. The Results: There were so many options on these straighteners that I found it slightly baffling at first. They look fabulous, though, and I was more than willing to give them a try. I have thick frizzy hair, so followed the instructions and activated the maximum fins (a comb that springs out of the plates to detangle hair as you straighten). Before I switched them on, I removed the tank and filled it with water, then set the steam setting to high. They quickly heated up and I pulled them through my hair. Wow – I was really impressed. Not only was my frizzy hair looking straight within minutes, but it also looked sleek and shiny. I’ll be using them every day!
Best for: All-round performance
TRESemmé PHILIPS SALON STRAIGHT GLIDE, £50 (Available at Boots & Argos nationwide)
What they say: TRESemmé and Philips have joined together to offer you the perfect fusion of salon expertise and technological innovation. Optimal Even Heat Distribution gives long lasting professional results. With the option of Sonic Vibration – gentle micro pulses that allow direct contact with each hair for 30% faster, dynamic straightening. What we say: Sleek black stylers, with silver tourmaline-coated ceramic plates. A digital display shows current temperature, with the maximum heat of 220°C. Sonic Vibration can be switched on and off. The Results: I have thick curly hair, which usually takes a long time to straighten. I had heard about these vibrating straighteners and was keen to see whether they would make styling my hair any easier. I switched them up to the maximum heat and pressed the ‘Sonic’ button – it was bizarre to feel and hear them vibrating! I found the stylers very easy to grip, getting a good hold of the hair as I pulled them through. I only had to cover each section a couple of times to straighten it – much, much quicker than usual. I’m delighted and won’t be giving them up any time soon! Best for: Curly hair
REMINGTON SHINE THERAPY 230° CERAMIC PLATES, £69.99 (0800 212 438) What they say: The revolutionary new straightener incorporates next generation ceramic plates with heat-activated Vitamin infused technology that delicately smoothes a micro-blend of non-greasy shine enhancing conditioners evenly onto the hair to create mirror shine from root to tip. What we say: Ice blue stylers, with a digital panel and top tempature of 230°C. A bleep notifies you when they’ve reached the required heat.. A silver heat-proof pouch is included. The Results: I was excited about testing these straighteners when I read that they were infused with Vitamin E and Avocado Oil. It was really helpful that they beeped when they were ready to be used – I could leave them on the side and carry on getting ready. I thought the highest temperature of 230°C was a bit too hot for my fine hair, so I loved having the option to choose my own heat. I found them easy to manage and was pleased by how straight they made my hair. I wondered whether I’d see the ‘shine ingredients’ on the plates, but they weren’t visible. Although the results were subtle, I could definitely see a gloss to my hair and it felt silky smooth.
Best for: Shine and health
FUDGE STRAIGHTENING IRON, £99.95 (www.fudgehair.co.uk)
What they say: Fudge hair straighteners have incredible durability, but still remain lightweight. They feature an easy to read digital display to set the temperature, accommodating a vast range of hair types and textures. The Fudge Irons have excellent build quality, curl as easily as they straighten, and also have a fast heat up time and recovery time, ideal for quick use. What we say: Silver and black stylers, with a red digital panel that counts up as they heat. Top temperature of 210°C. Lightweight and easy to manage, with a non-slip panel. The Results: I’ve never used straighteners before and was relieved that these were so easy to use. I switched them on and watched the temperature very quickly rise on the digital screen – as soon as the reading was steady, I pulled them carefully through sections of my hair. Maybe it’s because I’ve never done this before, but I was thrilled with how easy it was to make my (naturally wavy) hair look so poker straight. I found it really easy to grip the stylers and only needed to cover each section a few times. I’ve definitely been converted to straightening!Best for: Simple straightening.
BLOG: CAROLINE MONK (03.10.08)
“I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 2004 at age of 34. I found it by mistake whilst playing with my necklace. My doctor thought it was a cyst but referred me to the hospital to have it checked out. Two weeks later, I was laid out having a biopsy. At first they wanted to send me home as they couldn't find the lump but I knew my own body and persisted. Thank God I did. The mammogram showed nothing, but my scan showed a big scary black mass. Another week or so later I was back in the hospital, sort of knowing but hoping I was ok. I was told I had an aggressive grade three cancer, very rare in young women. My surgeon said “We’re going to throw everything we have at it but it’s not going to be easy.” Believe me, it wasn’t, but I got through it with a lot of loving support.
I know how important it is to still feel feminine and girly after chemotherapy. Losing your flowing locks, eyelashes, eyebrows, confidence, and self-esteem is tough – you need a pick-me-up and I decided I would be the one to give these women back their gorgeous selves and smiles. I teamed up with Bio Sculpture Nails, Karen Betts, Toni and Guy, and Trendo to launch a nationwide campaign during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It’s called Caroline’s Campaign.
The Campaign is devoted to making women look and feel gorgeous by giving them glamorous and indulgent makeovers during breast cancer treatment. With the help of wigs, tattooed eyebrows, makeup, and gorgeous all natural Bio Sculpture Nails, women across the country are charging forward with their cancer treatment with the utmost grace and glamour
It’s an exciting campaign and we’re having great fun and generally feeling truly pampered! My team are excited to be helping the cause too, with Bio Sculpture thrilled to be launching the Nail Breast Cancer Manicure (see picture). They are very passionate about the Campaign – seeing women who are battling breast cancer experiencing a manicure is very satisfying for them. As Bio Sculpture is natural, without any nasty chemicals, it’s a great option for women going through treatment. It’s gorgeous, girly, and the ladies love it!
I feel like I can make a difference to ladies who are going through such a hard time. I want them to remember how feminine and gorgeous they are – the moment when they see themselves in the mirror after the makeover makes everything so worthwhile! There’s nothing better than seeing these gorgeous ladies laughing again after feeling so down.
Helping people with cancer is not just about finding cures and funding research; it is about caring for the people who go through it. Every woman, without exception, who goes through chemotherapy needs help and advice on wigs, make up and diet etc… I want women to look in the mirror and look just as good as, if not better than, before treatment. A well-cut wig can make such a difference. Having eyelashes and eyebrows transforms you from looking ill to looking normal. Having been there myself I know all these things can make such a difference”

FEATURE: THE AW/08 EYELINER GUIDE (10.10.08)
The Autumn/Winter 08 catwalks have shown us more ways than ever before to line our eyes. It’s time to make a statement with your peepers...
CRAFT: The catwalk wouldn’t be the catwalk without a few ultra-creative or daring looks emerging as trends. It might not be suitable for doing the weekly shop, but thanks to likes of Viktor & Rolf and Sonia Rykiel, we have been given permission have fun with our eyes.
Picture: Sonia Rykiel AW/08, courtesy of Sonia Rykiel Press Office.
On the Catwalk: The backstage team at Sonia Rykiel had fun with silver glitter this season, painting it heavily over the lids. Black liquid liner was then swept across the top lash line, ending in a sexy eye-opening flick. Base and lips were kept soft and natural to give maximum impact to the eyes. The look was both flirty and pretty.
At Viktor & Rolf, makeup artist Pat McGrath turned models into ghoulish pandas. Pale base and red lips were enlivened with eyes framed in the darkest metallic black pigment. Powder was painted in an oval over the entire eye leaving the edges haphazard.
Backstage Kit: To recreate the whimsical prettiness of the makeup at Sonia Rykiel, choose an easy-to-manage liquid liner – we love the new By Terry Ligne Blackstar Intensive Liquid Eyeliner, £21 (www.spacenk.co.uk), which would make creating flicks a doddle. Finish the look with a slick of glitter on the eyelid – Urban Decay Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliners, £11.50 (www.asos.com) is the perfect product for the job.
For the bold look at Viktor & Rolf, try painting around the eye with Benefit’s She Laq £18.50 (www.benefitcosmetics.co.uk), a clear liquid sealant. Then, with a soft, rounded shadow brush stipple a dense metallic shadow such as M.A.C Pigment in Dark Soul, £15 (www.maccosmetics.co.uk) over the socket and around the eyes.
Pat McGrath’s top tips for applying eyeliner? “Keep the eyes slightly open while applying, which gives a much better result, especially when using liquid eyeliner. Never pull the eyes taut and drag across lids! Doing this will cause wrinkling to the eye area.”
SULTRY & CLASSIC: Just like the little black dress, the smoky lined eye will never go out of fashion. Take your cue from the catwalk and invest in the smokiest kohl you can find.
Picture: Georgio Armani AW/08, courtesy of L’Oreal Press Office.
On the Catwalk: Models on the Giorgio Armani catwalk peered out from eyes lined top and bottom with deep black liner. Far from being gothic, the look was grown-up and very feminine, perfectly complimenting the chic monochrome collection. The backstage team kept the eyes soft by sweeping a bronze metallic shadow from the inner corner of the eye, under the lower lashes, and reaching as far as the brow. A black kohl pencil then coated the inner rims of the eye and lined top and bottom. A lick of mascara completed the look; the picture perfect smoky lined eye.
Things took a more dramatic turn at Costume National, with makeup artists bluntly lining eyes top and bottom with a thick dark grey pencil. The line was taken into the inner corner and squared off to frame the eye. The clothes were dark, the eyes were dark, and the look was trés chic.
Backstage Kit: Like the smoky look? You need to get your hands on a soft kohl pencil pronto. Try Elizabeth Arden Smoky Eyes Pencil in Smoky Black, £12.50 (Elizabeth Arden counters nationwide). Sharpen it to a point and warm it slightly between your fingers to soften the nib and allow it to glide.
For the day, keep liner to your top lids. While for the evening, extend along the bottom of your eye. To add instant glamour, smudge the liner with either your finger or a soft sponge – try The Body Shop Line Softener, £7.50 (www.thebodyshop.co.uk). For the full effect, keep your base natural and lips nude.
ARTISTIC: Who says that eyeliner has to be uniform? Biba and Kenzo showed how a simple black liner can transform the shape of the eye, making it anything but normal.
Picture: Biba AW/08, courtesy of M.A.C Cosmetics.
On the Catwalk: At Biba, makeup artist Alex Box took a liquid black liner and created a shape that was both beautiful and elaborate. She formed rectangular eye-openings by drawing in sculptural boxes around the eyes with squared-off ends and straight lines. The arty look suited the collection down to a tee – a palette of jewel colours and eye-catching artistic prints.
At Kenzo, the backstage team took inspiration from the Orient. Makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury says “We wanted the girls to look like young, modern geishas with fresh, glowing skin. We outlined the eye with a sharp eyeliner that emphasised the out and up shape of the eyes that is so synonymous with the geisha. The hair was tied in a tight ponytail to really lift the skin around the eye and create a slightly haughty look”.
Backstage Kit: Getting artistic? You need a dense liquid liner. The new Maybelline Line Definer Liquid, £4.99 (www.boots.com) is perfect for the job – easy to control with an ultra-fine tip for showing off your creative flair.
To recreate the geisha-look, you should team up a kohl pencil and gel eyeliner. First, line the eye with the pencil (make sure it is ultra-sharp), then sweep the gel over the lines to add depth and prevent smudging. The perfect high-pigment pairing would be M.A.C Eye Kohl in Smolder, £11 (www.maccosmetics.co.uk) and Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner in Black Ink, £13.50 (www.bobbibrown.co.uk).
FELINE VS CANINE: With feline flicks at House of Holland and wolfish slants at John Paul-Gaultier, the catwalk really did rain cats and dogs for Autumn/Winter.
Picture: House of Holland AW/08, courtesy of M.A.C Cosmetics.
On the Catwalk: Feline liner, which follows the curve of the eye and rises into a sleek flick at the end, is always a catwalk favourite. It defines eyes and immediately transforms makeup into something altogether more groomed. At House of Holland, MAC artists used liner to give eyes the sultry flick, then added a slick of mascara and a pink flush to cheeks.
At the other end of the scale, the wolfish models at John Paul-Gaultier had manes of thick white hair, with eyes lined in dense black liner that angled downwards at the inner corner of the eyes. Eyebrows were unruly and skin nude – the perfect compliment to the collection of furs, leathers, and thick chunky knits.
Backstage Kit: For both these looks, you need a liner that is deep, glossy, and precise enough to fit into the inner corners of the eyes. Max Factor Glide and Define Liquid, £6.99 (www.boots.com) is the ideal tool for the job.
Not particularly gifted with eyeliner? Makeup artist Lee Pycroft recommends tracing in your desired shape with a pencil first and, once happy, drawing over the top with a liquid liner. Charlotte Tilbury’s advice is to use pre-soaked cotton buds – “an ideal tool to correct any mistakes you make while applying eye liner, simply use around the eye to create the desired shape”.
COLOUR: Contrary to popular belief, eyeliner does not need to be black. Offset a fresh complexion with a flash of vivid colour - as seen at Armand Basi and Gareth Pugh.
Picture: Gareth Pugh AW/08, courtesy of M.A.C Cosmetics.
On the Catwalk: To compliment a collection of the brightest prints and jewel hues, M.A.C artists backstage at Armand Basi traced a thin streak along the models’ upper lash lines in a vibrant coral against a nude eye. Lashes were bare and brows were kept natural, giving a healthy, youthful look.
The inspiration behind the look at Gareth Pugh came from the days of black and white silent movies, where actresses wore blue makeup to show up on screen. Makeup artist Alex Box muted out the face and contoured cheekbones with an aqua powder swept under the apple of the cheeks. Eyebrows were erased and replaced further up the forehead, while lips became a vinyl blue. Eyes were lined in an electric blue with a sweeping flash of colour on the top lids that reached almost as far as the ‘new’ brows and the bottom lash line accentuated with a blue eyeliner pencil.
Backstage Kit: Streak a bright liner across your upper lash line to get the colour-popping Armand Basi look. Star Gazer UV Eye Pencils, £3 each (www.stargazer-products.com) glide on smoothly and come in an array of acid-brights. Trace over the line until you get a really dense shade.
To recreate the dramatic Gareth Pugh look, use a thin pointed brush to paint vivid pigment across the lash line. Try Urban Decay Loose Pigment Eyeshadow with Shimmer, £11.50 (www.asos.com) teamed with Bobbi Brown’s Ultra Fine Eyeliner Brush, £17 (www.bobbibrown.co.uk). Wet the brush, pick up a little pigment, and paint across the lash line in a series of small feathering movements. Tidy up any messy edges with a wet cotton bud.
GLAM PUNK: Punk is back, but this time it’s modern and very glam. Take your lead from Luella and Lanvin by going dark and very moody.
Picture: Luella AW/08, courtesy of Luella Press Office.
On the Catwalk: Hannah Murray, the magical hands behind the Luella AW/08 look, used liquid liner to draw a sweeping line underneath the eye. She explains the technique: “Starting below the inner corner of the eye, angle the pen outwards so it is almost flat to the eye. With a fluid motion, draw the line outwards meeting the underneath lashes and extending beyond the outer corner of the eye.” She painted lips dark, but kept the rest of the face fresh – giving the look an almost sweet, young look to justapose the punky gothic element.
The backstage team at Lanvin painted lids a glamorous metallic grey, before lining the upper arch of the lid and bottom lash line in thick black kohl. The lines were smudged to create an intense smoky eye. The overall effect is dark, punky, with a touch of metallic to give a modern edge.
Backstage Kit: To recreate the defined sweeping lines at Luella, Hannah Murray recommends using Shu Uemura Liquid Eyeliner, £19 (020 7240 7635), which has a firm pointed brush. To end the line with a perfect point, lighten the pressure on the skin so that the liner fades away to nothing. For the metallic look of Lanvin, paint a glossy pewter shadow over lids, such as M.A.C Paint Pot in Blackground, £12 (www.maccosmetics.co.uk). Follow this by drawing a thick line on the upper arch and below the lower lashes with a chunky liner – the best tool for the job is Benefit BADgal eye pencil, £12.50 (www.benefitcosmetics.co.uk).
TRIED & TESTED: SHINE SHAMPOO (10.10.08)
Has constant styling or colouring left your locks looking dull and lacklustre?
We’ve tested six shampoos that promise to boost the shine factor, leaving hair looking sleek, glossy and groomed.
WELLA SYSTEM PROFESSIONAL LUMINOUS SHAMPOO FOR INTENSE GLOSS AND SHINE, £9.95 for 250ML (01256 490690)
Follow with: Wella System Professional Luminous Mask, £13.95.
Description: This special shine-enhancing formula with TRI-complex is tailor-made for preparing the hair for your optimal shine.
The Results: I have thick hair, with highlights and a fringe – I’ve used shine hair products in the past, but they’ve always made my fringe look greasy so I quickly moved onto different ranges. The texture of the shampoo is almost like hair gel – I must admit I double-checked the bottle to make sure it was shampoo – but it rubbed easily into hair and rinsed out within seconds. After using the shampoo, I was thrilled to discover silky, dazzling hair and a fringe that was light and bouncy. I’ll definitely continue using this product.
Best for: Thick hair and fringes
SCHWARZKOPF SUPERSOFT YOGHURT & RED BERRIES SMOOTHIE SHAMPOO, £1.79 for 400ml (0800 3289214)
Follow with: Swarzkopf Supersoft Yoghurt & Red Berries Smoothie Conditioner, £1.79.
Description: The Red Berries extract and UV Filter prolong colour intensity and moisturise the hair, to leave brilliant shine and longer lasting vibrant colour. Ideal for softer, smoother and more manageable coloured hair.
The Results: The first thing I noticed about this shampoo was the incredible fragrance – it smelt like thick strawberry yoghurt. I loved the texture too, which felt like a rich body lotion. I have quite dry hair with all-over highlights and it usually tangles when I wash it. Immediately after climbing out of the shower, I noticed that my hair felt smoother and more manageable – the comb literally fell through it. After drying, there was a noticeable shine, which is quite hard to achieve with my light blonde hair. It also felt far softer and smelt amazing all day.
Best for: Highlighted hair
BUMBLE AND BUMBLE GENTLE SHAMPOO FOR SOFTNESS AND SHINE, £14.50 for 8oz (0207 2475656)
Follow with: Bumble & Bumble Super Rich Conditioner, £15.
Description: For the chemically addicted or the chronically parched: a mild, luxurious cleanser and moisturiser for softness and shine. A must for damage or dryness due to hair colour or perms.
The Results: I’ve been highlighting my hair for years and the damage is showing – I have plenty of split ends and it feels rough when I run my fingers through. I was excited about testing a product that might give it back some shine. There’s nothing fancy about this shampoo – simple packaging, containing a clear odourless shampoo. But don’t be deceived by that – it worked wonders for my hair. It felt noticeably softer after the first use and had already started to get back its natural shine. After a week of washing, it looked luminous and felt far smoother.
Best for: Damaged hair
MOP GLISTEN SHAMPOO FOR VOLUME AND SHINE, £10.95 for 250ml (01282 613413)
Follow with: MOP Glisten Conditioner, £10.95.
What they say: Stressed out strands need extra help without the heft. Pure Maple Syrup and Honey help boost hair’s body and shine. Wheat Protein and Certified Organic Linseed Oil help protect while you bathe your hair in the freshness of Vitamin C infused with Orange Extract. How sweet it is.
The Results: I have fine hair, which gets weighed down easily, so was sceptical about using a shine shampoo. However, the packaging of this product said that it would boost body so I was more than happy to give it a try. I absolutely loved using the shampoo – it had a sweet, but not overpowering, citrus fragrance and created a lovely creamy lather. My hair felt silky smooth after using it and had far fewer tangles than usual. After blow-drying I was over the moon to discover that my hair had amazing volume and a lovely luminous shine.
Best for: Fine hair
HERBAL ESSENCES FRUIT FUSIONS SHAMPOO FOR DEEP NOURISHMENT & SHINE, £1.99 for 200ml (Supermarkets Nationwide)
Follow with: Herbal Essences Fruit Infusions Conditioner for Deep Nourishment & Shine, £1.99.
Description: Revive the shine of your hair with Deep Nourishment & Shine. Immerse yourself in fragrant shampoos and conditioners, which will leave your hair replenished.
The Results: I have fairly normal brunette hair – it isn’t dry or greasy and it’s easy to manage. My only qualm is that the colour looks quite flat and never seems to shine like other people’s hair. I loved the fruity fragrance of this shampoo – it was the perfect pick-me-up for early morning showers. It created a thick creamy lather, which washed easily out. My hair felt very soft after showering and, much to my delight, I noticed it shimmering under the light as I blow-dried it in the mirror. The shine isn’t dramatic, but it’s definitely looking much healthier and feeling great too. I’m now using it every day.
Best for: Every day use
TONI & GUY MODEL.ME ERIN ILLUMINATING SHAMPOO, £5.99 FOR 250ML (www.modelme.com)
Follow with: Tony & Guy Model.Me Erin Illuminating Conditioner, £5.99.
Description: Erin O’Connor says: “My illuminating shampoo truly revitalises your hair. The detox shampoo gently removes any styling product residue, whilst the scientific resin formulation works to leave your hair full of vitality, volume and shimmer”.
The Results: This shampoo felt really luxurious – I loved the sleek pump bottle, thick gel texture, and rich lather it created. I have very thick hair, which has been relaxed, so a shampoo needs to be intensive to deliver a shine. I was really impressed with this product – after drying there was a gorgeous shine, which could be seen whenever I moved my head. Better still, my hair felt silky smooth and richly hydrated. The glossiness lasted a few days until my next wash. I’ve been recommending it to all my friends!
Best for: Thick hair
