Tried & Tested: HAIRSPRAYS (30.10.09)
We’ve tested six of the top-selling hairsprays for those final finishing touches.
MARK HILL STYLE SECRETS FABULOUS FINISH HAIRSPRAY, £4.99 (Boots Nationwide).
What they say: Ideal for all hair types, this flexible hairspray keeps hair looking great from dawn ‘til dusk. With natural extracts and a unique shine complex, it gives hair a subtle sheen and brushes out like a breeze before bed.
The results: I sometimes struggle when it comes to angling hairspray into my roots, but this was really easy to use. The fine mist came out in short, sharp bursts, which meant I could tailor exactly where I wanted to create an effect and where I didn’t. I have fine hair and too much hairspray can sometimes weigh it down or leave it looking lank, but this was lovely and light and I could still run my fingers through my hair post-spritzing. The only thing I didn’t notice was the subtle sheen – maybe a tad too subtle – but that didn’t sway my overall opinions of the spray. Definitely a finishing product rather than a mega-hold hairspray, it gave my style swagger and sway, and although the roots did drop a little after a couple of hours, they still looked more boosted than before. The cute pink and white packaging got the girly stamp of approval too.
Best for: Beginners
CHARLES WORTHINGTON FRONT ROW FOREVER LASTING HAIRSPRAY, £5.99 (Boots Nationwide).
What they say: Tested at editorial shoots, fashion shows and star-studded events, this high-performance hairspray smoothes unruly flyaways, gives hair a lustrous shine and delivers a non-sticky finish for a catwalk-ready look.
The results: I loved the packaging. Created by designer-of-the-moment, Erdem, exclusively for Charles Worthington, the bespoke black, pink and purple pattern blossomed from the duo’s creative partnership backstage at London Fashion Week. When I peeled back the label, it revealed a trio of styling tips – perfect for hairspray amateurs. For once, I actually felt like I knew what I was doing. As well as giving great hold, no matter how many times I spritzed and sprayed, there was no greasy build-up left on my hair. Top marks all round, I’d definitely buy this product again.
Best for: Fashionistas
SCHWARZKOPF PROFESSIONAL SILHOUETTE COLOUR SHINE HAIRSPRAY, £3.50 (01296 314000)
What they say: A styling essential for coloured hair, this innovative spray contains a unique colour complex that gives tinted tresses a radiant shine. With antioxidants and UV filters as well as super strong hold, it’s an all-in-one protector and perfector.
The results: Having recently altered my hair hue to a vibrant copper colour, I was eager to try this colour-saving spray. On first impressions it got the thumbs up - not only because of the hot pink canister, but the fact that this salon-branded spray is especially purse-friendly – brilliant when you take into consideration its 300ml size. With more of a traditional nozzle (big enough just to fit my fingertip on), it had a precise pumping action, although I did find it slightly trickier to use on the back of my hair, but that could have just been down to the super-size container. Definitely more of a styling spray, while I could feel the hairspray when I touched my hair, it wasn’t tacky to the touch despite its heavy-duty hold. Colour-wise, I didn’t notice a huge difference, but it did make my colour look glossier when I styled my hair in an up-do which I felt was a nice little extra, making it a great all-rounder.
Best for: Budget beauty queens
LABEL.M HAIRSPRAY, £10.75 (www.labelm.co.uk)
What they say: A versatile finishing product with pro-vitamin B5, naturally derived conditioners and a UV sunscreen, this multi-tasking hairspray has great hold, protects hair from everyday damage and gives hair a natural gloss. Excellent for reapplication, it’s easy to wash out too.
The results: I put this sleek-looking spray to the test by using it with heated styling tools. Eager not to create crispy curls, I was pleased to see that my hair held the shape of the tongues, but rather than becoming rigid ringlets, each wave had movement and bounce, which gave my hair a more natural look and feel. And although it was inevitable that the curls would drop by the end of the evening, I put it down to the outside elements rather than the hairspray. The spray also had a lovely sweet-smelling fragrance, and because I had to use so much to perfect my curls, it made a pleasant change to have hair that smelt fresh rather than flammable! The only thing that would make me waver over whether I would buy this again is the price; however there’s no denying it reflects the first-class performance of the product.
Best for: Serious styling
AUSSIE AUSSOME VOLUME + GLOSS HAIRSPRAY, £4.49 (Boots Nationwide)
What they say: For plus-size hair that stays light and shiny, this un-sticky hairspray, containing Australian Sea Kelp, ensures locks remain soft and silky without scrimping on hold or height. Long-lasting and with ultra-strong staying power, your ‘do’ is guaranteed to stay secure.
The results: I’m a big fan of Aussie products so I was keen to see how this would perform when it came to boosting my barnet. Forming part of the new Aussome range, this promised glisten and glamour in one, so I followed the guidelines and sprayed quick, short bursts from root to tip, flicking my head upside down every so often for extra oomph. Ignoring the fact that I could have passed for an extra in an eighties musical, my hair soon mellowed to a tousled effect, and regardless of the spray being labelled as strong-hold, my hair didn’t feel in the least bit straw-like (although I did feel it was more worthy of a medium-hold marker as I had to re-apply the spray more than once before I left the house). Not that I minded, though, as it was oozing with the juicy papaya-based scent that has become synonymous with the brand, and that alone would make me re-purchase the product!
Best for: Glamour-pusses
UMBERTO GIANNINI CATWALK BEAUTY HAIRSPRAY, £4.99 (Boots Nationwide)
What they say: With its own humidity-proof barrier and shape memory formula, nothing gets past this superhero of a hairspray. Suitable for all hair types and styles, this fixing spray gives hair flexible hold with a frizz-free touchable finish.
The results: I really liked the look of this product and I immediately felt that the silver conical lid and arty illustration on the front made it look much more expensive than it was - always a bonus in my eyes! I also found that the larger nozzle made misting my hair with the spray so much easier, while the fruity fragrance got the nod of approval too. My big question mark however, hung over its frizz-free claims, so I decided it to trial it moments before a night out to see if it would keep my hair intact. While it didn’t get the dance-floor treatment, I didn’t notice any change throughout the night, and although my hair felt slightly stiffer, it was nowhere near the brittle finish I’ve experienced from other products in the past. And the best bit – it comes in a cute handbag size so you can top-up en route – something I’ll no doubt be investing in!
Best for: Frizz-prone locks
Spas & Treatments: REAL HAIR AND BEAUTY, TUNBRIDGE WELLS (30.10.09)
Location: Real Hair and Beauty, 48 Grosvenor Road, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, TN1 2AS 01892 517297 www.realhairandbeauty.com
Facilities: Step into Real Hair and Beauty from the busy street outside and you will instantly feel at ease. It is a small salon, with just two therapists and two stylists, yet this is a place that is serious about hair and beauty – the mere fact that this is the only salon in the area to use and stock Aveda haircare and body products has customers flocking from miles around. The recent winner of the Kent Environment Awards - and the first hair and beauty salon even eligible to enter – this is the place to come for the environmentally aware. The salon offers a vast range of treatments and experiences to have you looking beautiful literally from top to toe – from Aveda Full Spectrum Hair Colouring to an Aveda Foot Spa Treatment. The only problem you will have is picking which treatment you would like to try…
Ambience: The atmosphere is warm and homely, whilst the décor is simple, modern, and bang on trend. Upstairs is dressed in neutral colours, teamed with dark woods and a cast iron fireplace. Whilst downstairs, flickering candles create an instantly relaxing ambience. On arrival, I was invited to sit in the comfortable waiting area and, along with the usual healthy and safety forms, asked to fill in a questionnaire to complete about my mood and stress levels that day. Over a cup of herbal tea, I chatted to the salon owners Jo and Stuart, who explained their aim to provide a personalised service, getting to know each and every customer and taking time to understand their lifestyles, personalities and specific needs.
Treatment Tested: Aveda Caribbean Therapy Body Wrap, £90 for 90 mins.
My experience began with a soothing foot treatment, whilst my therapist, Jo, explained the process of the Caribbean Therapy Body Wrap. She then asked me to close my eyes and breathe in three base notes that were tailored to my answers to the earlier questionnaire. I chose a soothing vanilla, which would be used as the base note for my treatment. I was then invited to jump up onto the comfortable treatment bed and, after a relaxation breathing exercise and a ting of cymbals, the therapist treated my skin to an invigorating body scrub. This prepared my skin for the detoxifying seaweed mask, which was then applied with gentle strokes. I was wrapped in sheets and a huge cosy blanket (far more luxurious than plastic often used for body wraps), and was then treated to a face and scalp massage, whilst the mask worked it’s magic. The therapist’s expert touch, added to the warmth of my cocoon, would have sent me off to sleep quite easily, had I not wanted to stay awake to enjoy the experience in full! I was then led to a shower area and given a towelling glove to remove the mask, after which the experience continued with a heavenly full body massage using delicious-scented body butters. The treatment was rounded off as it began with a breathing exercise and the ting of cymbals. When I was ready, I was led to the relaxation area where a pot of Aveda liquorice and peppermint tea, a glass of water and a bowl of strawberries were waiting for me. I had been quite stressed before the treatment but felt utterly pampered and serene as I stepped out of the salon. After a few weeks I still feel that the experience not only effectively soothed and detoxified my body but has also reduced my stress levels!
Blog: PAISLEY ARNOLD – FOUNDER OF PURITY ORGANIC SKINCARE – ON THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE BRAND (30.10.09)
Organic products have been a passion of mine for years. After completing a bachelor of Commerce, I went to work for Mary Langham at Wholefood - one of the first organic farmers in Britain and a founder member of the Soil Association. It was during this period that I realised how inaccessible organic produce was on the high street through lack of availability and often being priced more than the average person could afford. Organic skincare was not a viable option for most people – I vowed to change that.
Motherhood shortly beckoned and my desire to use organic products - cleaning products, food, haircare and skincare - became increasingly important, but finding affordable options was still hard. So in 2002 my mission began to bring intelligent, sustainable, affordable organic beauty to each and every one of us. The concept of Purity Organic Skincare was born.
When I started the development of the products, it was clear that the cosmetic technology in the realm of organics wasn’t as advanced as it is now, so it was tricky to create products that I felt were right. However, over the last seven years immense progress has been made in the formulation arena, and superb natural ingredients that have real and measurable skin benefits are now available and certified organic.
We use a wealth of natural ingredients in our hard-working formulations including Sweet Almond Oil, Shea Butter, Collodial Oats, Cranberry Seed Oil, Aloe Vera, Coconut, Avocado and Rose and our entire range is on average 98% natural and 82% certified organic. Purity Organic Skincare consists of seven products, including a cream cleanser and facial wash, an exfoliating scrub, moisturisers for day and night, and two anti-ageing products – a clever multi-purpose serum/mask and an anti-aging moisturiser.
One of my main objectives of creating this brand was to break through the elitist barrier of organic skincare. I wanted my brand to be easy to find and affordable. That is why Superdrug was such an important choice of stockist for us and why our prices are from £4.99 - £8.99. We are actually the first organic skincare brand to be stocked in Superdrug, and I feel this shows that an understanding of the benefits of organic is now more widely understood.
My dream has finally been realised.
Feature: LASHINGS OF LASHES (31.10.09)
Get ready to flutter. There’s only one way to wear your eyelashes this season – impossibly long and lustrous. Simply follow our top tips to achieve doe-eyes to rival Cheryl Cole.
EXTENSIONS
For an instant lift, better than any facial, extensions are the only way to go. In less than an hour, you can boast a full set of lustrous lashes that will transform your eyes from stubby to smoldering.
Blink eyebrow bars are one of the best and the lashes last for two to three weeks. All you need is a patch test 24-hours before, then you can choose between three different lash lengths depending on how natural you want them to look. Individual clumps of three or four synthetic strands are glued to your own lashes. The sensation is a little uncomfortable at first but soon subsides. You can even make the look more dramatic by having a lash tint first, but you cannot get water in or around the eye area for the first 48 hours. You also cannot use mascara - not that you will need to - or oily makeup remover. They last until your real lashes fall out naturally. But the best bit is waking up and having instantly beautiful, made-up eyes.
From £60, at Fenwick (020 7629 9161)
MASCARA
It was the Egyptian’s who first made darkening the eyes with kohl - a mixture of soot and fat - an essential part of the beauty regime. Today it is big business. In the UK alone we spent a massive £192 million on mascara last year. The market is swamped with everything from spiked to vibrating brushes, all of which can make it tricky to know which one to buy.
Christian Dior is widely regarded in the industry as creating the finest all-round mascara, and following on from its bestselling Diorshow, the brand has just launched its new Iconic mascara, £18.50, (www.dior.com) with a unique bristle design that creates an incredibly dramatic Dior catwalk sweep.
Vibrating mascaras have been big news this year and Estee Lauder’s TurboLash, £28 (www.esteelauder.co.uk) is the best for defining the curl in a rich black gloss as well as coating all your lashes.
If you are looking for volume as well as length, Yves Saint Laurent’s Singulier Mascara £20 (www.ysl.com), in its beautiful gold packaging, is a dream to use. It lasts well and there is a good range of colours including the deep brown, which is great if you are fair, as well as green and violet for adding extra drama for evening.
Finally, By Terry’s Blackstar Ultra Volume and Maxi-Length Mascara, £22.51 (www.spacenk.co.uk) is glossy, long-lasting, and the special brush reaches even tiny lashes. Remember to begin by applying mascara at the root of the lash and then move in a zigzag motion to the tip, then simply repeat in the outer inner corners. Do this no more than twice as the lashes will clump, and for a gentle, soothing remover try Korres Jasmine Eye Make-Up Remover, £12.50 (020 7581 6455) which even removes waterproof mascara yet is gentle enough to be used by contact-lens wearers.
CONDITIONERS
If you find extensions too expensive, and false lashes too fiddly, it is worth investing in one of the new conditioning treatments. The average lifespan of an eyelash is only three months which is why they only grow so long, but a host of beauty companies are looking into ways to make our lashes last longer.
Jan Marini was the first to introduce a lash enhancer to the market and it is still one of the best. You simply apply the formulation along the lash line every night before bed and it results in dense and lush eyelashes in just eight weeks. Dannii Minogue is apparently addicted, £99 (020 8868 4411).
Another good brand to try is Revitalash, which also promises naturally thicker, fuller lashes without makeup. It was created by American ophthalmologist Michael Brinkenhoff whose wife lost her lashes due to breast cancer - Ugly Betty’s Becki Newton is a big fan - and the brand donates £13,000 to breast cancer every month, £95 (www.hqhair.com).
CURLERS
Curling your lashes is a fantastic way to instantly open up and frame the eye. Shu Uemura’s professional curlers can be found in most beauty editor’s kit for their great easy-to-use natural curl. For extra glamour while you squeeze, they have also introduced a 24-carat gold-plated curler, £30 (020 7235 2375), as well as a mini-curler which allows you to tackle the tricky short lashes at the corners of the eye and fits neatly in your makeup bag. £16 (020 7235 2375).
If you have ever damaged your lashes with excessive curling, Blinc Heated Eyelash Curlers, £18 (www.blincuk.co.uk) gently sets a long-lasting look just like you would achieve with your hair.
And to complete the maximum volume effect, Clinique’s High Impact Curling Mascara, £14.50 (www.clinique.co.uk) with its special arched wand, really gives a great upturned finish.
Finally, for those too lazy to do their own curling, you could try a more permanent solution. Shavata offers eyelash perming at her Brow Studios in Urban Retreat and selected House of Fraser stores which is perfect for that wide-awake look, £95 including a tint (www.shavata.co.uk).
TINTING
If your lashes are fair or you want to avoid the dreaded panda eye or you simply can not be bothered to remove your eye makeup at night, eyelash tinting is a must-try. Quick and painless it is the perfect fuss-free way to set your eyes aflutter. You must have a patch test 24 hours prior to the tint, then you just lie back with two cotton wool pads beneath each eye while the dye is dabbed on and left for fifteen minutes. It doesn’t sting, unless the tint gets into your eye, and lasts for four to six weeks.
Urban Retreat at Harrods offers an excellent tinting service. Or for a cheaper alternative, you can also try Boots Colorsport 30 Day Mascara, £7.25 (www.boots.com), which is a DIY tint kit that takes ten minutes at home using a semi-permanent colour and lasts up to a month.
FALSE EYELASHES
The biggest beauty trend of the year has to be false eyelashes. Once the preserve of Drag Queens, now everyone from Michelle Obama to Katy Perry is fluttering their fakes. There was also news this week that more and more men are faking it. Hardly surprising then that we are reported to spend £10 million a year on falsies in Britain. Tesco reported that sales have increased by 90 per cent in the last 12 months, while Superdrug’s sales have doubled.
There is no doubt that a sweeping lash can do wonders for your look. For a lidded look to rival Betty Draper in Mad Men then Ardell’s 100% human hair lashes, from £4.45 (www.boots.com) are perfect.
Otherwise, for sheer theatrics, Shu Uemura is a must, especially as this summer the brand opened a Tokyo Lash Factory at Selfridges where you can design your own styles from an array of crystals and feathers for eyes as unique as yours are. If you find application fiddly, you can pop by any Shu Uemura counter and they will apply your lashes for free or they also do a nifty lash applicator with a special curved head, which holds the lashes and allows a more accurate application, £24.47 (www.spacenk.co.uk).
Breaking News: GREEN & SPRING LAUNCH NATURAL SKINCARE RANGE (30.10.09)
Since its launch earlier this year, all-natural beauty brand Green & Spring has been flying off the shelves - and now it’s set to earn even more brownie points with the introduction of its new series of skincare products. Following the same philosophy as the bath, body and candle collection, the ten latest launches have all been inspired by the British countryside, in particular the wild hedgerows at Cowley Manor – a five-star retreat in the Cotswolds. Hand-blended using natural spring water and herbs, the range is also paraben free, steers clear of synthetic colours and artificial fragrances, hasn’t been tested on animals and is bottled in recyclable packaging, so there’s no need to feel guilty about authenticity or traceability. As for the products themselves, they’ve already been receiving rave reviews from the press and public alike. Made up of ten delectable skincare delicacies – from night cream to cleanser, face serum to scrub - there’s even a lip balm to ensure your pout stays perfectly smooth all year round. And because they’re all bursting with natural ingredients, they smell divine too – on unscrewing the lid of the nourishing day moisturiser, you’re instantly transported to a spa setting thanks to the relaxing lavender and sage notes. Add to that the gorgeously, grown-up packaging, and it’s clear to see why they’re being included on everyone’s winter wishlist.
Green & Spring’s skincare range is available at www.greenandspring.com and Harvey Nichols nationwide. Prices start at £7.50.
Treatment Review: NOVALASH EYELASH EXTENSIONS (23.10.09)
What it promises: This revolutionary eyelash extension system gives you fuller, longer, natural-looking lashes in just under two hours that will stay looking great for weeks to come. By attaching individual single synthetic eyelashes directly onto your own natural lashes with a specially formulated bonding agent, you end up with fabulous looking lashes that last between one and two months or until your own eyelashes naturally fall out. They are very light and comfortable on the eyes, do not damage the natural eyelashes, and come in five different lengths, styles, curls or colours. Wave goodbye to your mascara and eyelash curlers girls - with NovaLash eyelash extensions you wake up and your lashes look amazing.
What happens: Upon arrival my therapist Gené told me exactly what to expect and ran through the lash options with me. She told me that the reason NovaLash lashes look so effective is that they are much thicker than the average lash extension and stay on 3-4 times longer. The lashes range in length, style and thickness and are available in blue, green, purple, brown or black. These lashes can be used as a total image change or mixed in with standard black to give a subtle tone. I went for broke and opted for a full set of natural curl, black lashes in the longest length available. I was asked to remove all my mascara and eye makeup thoroughly, as any lingering mascara will affect the outcome of how long my new lashes last. Once I was happy with my choice and all eye makeup was removed, I lay down on the bed and closed my eyes, drifting off into a blissful daydream about my new longer lashes. Whilst I relaxed, Gené got to work. One by one, she applied each lash extension to the individual lash using the platinum bond glue that is formaldehyde free and waterproof. Each lash extension was placed onto the natural lash leaving a 1mm gap from the skin and root, which meant that there was no damage to my lashes, and ensured no breakage. Gené continued with this and then, after two hours of careful application, I was told I could sit up and open my eyes.
Results: I was thrilled with the finished results. The lashes felt so natural and light that I couldn’t feel the difference – but when I looked in the mirror I couldn’t believe what I saw. My lashes looked incredibly natural, but they were very long and dark with a gorgeous natural curl. For aftercare I was told not expose my extensions to water for 12-24 hours but after that I could shower, swim, go the gym as usual and my lashes would stay in tact thanks to the platinum bond glue. I was very impressed with the whole NovaLash experience and would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to ditch the mascara for good. They are pricey, but definitely worth it. On my way home, three different people stopped me to comment on my new luscious lashes.
Price: Full set of NovaLash Lash extensions £150, £95 for a half set and £86 for corners.

Breaking News: ELIZABETH ARDEN EIGHT HOUR CREAM GETS AN 80’S MAKEOVER (23.10.09)
What was once acceptable in the eighties is now back in vogue - and Elizabeth Arden is embracing the trend for all things fluoro and fabulous. The brand are famed for their gorgeous limited edition packaging - the cult Eight Hour Cream was treated to a vintage transformation in 2008, with the beauty buffs of Britain eager to get their mitts on the 50s-inspired pots of protectant. This year, however, is all about the 80’s - and we’re predicting the products will be on waiting lists worldwide.
The ‘It’ bag of beauty, the new ‘Celebrations of the Decades’ packaging will brighten up even the dullest dressing table. Pinks, oranges and blues dominate the colour scheme, while the bold ‘eight’ graphic has been inspired by the Marc Jacobs, Versace and Gucci autumn/winter shows. And it’s not just the Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant that’s been jazzed up - the Lip Protectant Stick SPF 15 has been retrofied too! The perfect skincare duo for the winter months, use them to soften skin, shape eyebrows and keep lips kissable.
The 80s Collectable Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant and Lip Protectant SPF 15 both cost £17 and are available exclusively from House of Fraser from November 2nd. They will be available nationwide on November 16th, but be quick, because once they’re gone, they’re gone!
TRIED & TESTED: AUTUMN/WINTER COLOUR PALETTES (23.10.09)
Add some colour to your beauty routine this Autumn/Winter. We’ve tested six of the season’s most desirable new colour palettes.
ESTEE LAUDER SIGNATURE EYESHADOW QUAD IN LAVISH PLUM, £29 (www.esteelauder.co.uk)
First Impressions: A sleek, expensive-looking gold compact, containing four eyeshadows, two applicators, and a large mirror.
The Results: This palette is very grown-up – the colours are sophisticated, and the gold casing is very stylish. The eye colours were easy to apply. They blended easily and had impressive pigment – just a little of the shadow covered my entire lid and was just as noticeable a few hours later. I have pale skin and found the plum shades a little too red for my complexion, but they would work well on darker complexions. The pale pink and taupe were beautiful and I would buy the palette for those alone. The colours are neutral and wearable, making them ideal for day wear – plus they stayed put all day long.
Best for: Wearing at work
LE METIER DE BEAUTÉ KALEIDOSCOPE LIP KIT IN QUEENSLAND CORAL, £65 (www.liberty.co.uk)
First Impressions: Silver compact, with panels that slide out to reveal four vanilla-scented lip-glosses, and a mirror that lifts from the top.
The Results: I love the packaging - it is very stylish and quirky, with an almost futuristic feel. My initial reaction was that the palette is a bit too bulky to carry around in my handbag, which is a shame as lip-gloss obviously needs to be regularly reapplied, but the quality of the gloss is so high that I would swap to a bigger bag just to be able to carry it round! The four colours – sparkling raspberry pink, caramel, gold and coral – are all very flattering and would suit every skin tone. They smell delicious – and better still, felt velvety smooth on my lips. The colour lasted a long time for a gloss – it’s long-lasting, without being sticky. I love this product – it would make a beautiful gift.
Best for: An indulgent treat
BOOTS NO.7 THE ESSENTIALS COLLECTION IN STONE, £14 (www.boots.com)
First Impressions: A large square black palette with a mirror and four generous-sized eyeshadows.
The Results: The design of this palette is quite simple and a little chunky, but I was impressed with the quality of eyeshadow. I found them very easy to blend and I liked the colours – which vary from a wearable pale brown to a deep black. I was disappointed that there was no applicator, but I liked the fact the palette included a black kohl liner, which was soft and easy to smudge. This is the perfect kit for creating a glamorous smoky eye look – I simply applied the lighter colours to my whole lid, then added touches of black and smoky grey at the outer edges. There are instructions on the base of the palette to help you create the look – so it’s great for people who don’t have much experience with makeup.
Best for: A glamorous evening look
CLARINS GOLD ATTRACTION EYE QUARTET & LINER PALETTE, £35 (http://uk.clarins.com)
First Impressions: This brand new compact will go on sale at the beginning of November. The top of the palette has a striking molton-gold design, which opens to reveal four eye colours and dark brown eyeliner. Contains two applicators – one for eyeshadow and one for eyeliner.
The Results: It was love at first sight with this palette. It looks fantastic and has a satisfying, heavy weight – but for that reason, it might be better kept on your dressing table than in your handbag. The eye colours are very pretty – a pale pink, with just a touch of shimmer that glistened in the light, a warm gold that looked great on my skin tone, a mid brown that was great for day wear, and a dark chocolate brown that added some glamour for an evening out. The eyeshadows were quite powdery, but smoothed easily onto my lids and stayed put for hours. The eyeliner glided easily across my lash-line, with the handy brush included, and also lasted an impressively long time. This is a real collectors piece – and despite the hefty price tag, is the perfect tool for the season ahead.
Best for: An investment buy
BOBBI BROWN VELVET PLUM EYE PALETTE, £34 (www.bobbibrown.co.uk)
First Impressions: Small, light rectangular palette with a chrome casing. Inside, there are four eye colours and a double-ended applicator.
The Results: I’ve always admired Bobbi Brown’s cosmetics from afar, but never had the pleasure of using them as they are out of my price range, so was pleased to be handed this palette. I loved the packaging, but what lay inside was even better – the eye shadows looked good enough to eat, especially the stunning shimmering bronze colour! I was impressed with the quality of the shadows, which glided on and looked as good on the skin as they did in the palette. I was also impressed with the quality of the applicator – much better than what is usually given in a palette – it’s like a professional-quality makeup brush! But the best bit for me was how long the eyeshadow lasted – I applied it for a night out and it didn’t budge for the whole night. I have definitely learnt that it pays to invest in makeup – and will definitely be saving up for more Bobbi Brown!
Best for: Long-lasting colour
THE BODY SHOP EYE & CHEEK PALETTE IN CARAMEL & PINK, £12 (www.thebodyshop.co.uk)
First Impressions: A sleek black velvet compact, which unfolds to reveal four eyeshadows and a blusher. Contains a double-ended applicator.
The Results: I loved this palette – it looks far sleeker and more expensive than I have previously seen at The Body Shop. The colours are beautiful and I was a bit loathed to start using it, as it looked so perfect when I first cracked it open! I have dark, olive complexion and the sparkly gold, shimmering pinks, and flattering browns looked great on my skin tone. My friend, who has pale skin, also had a play with the colours it and they looked just as good on her. This would make a safe buy for a birthday or Christmas, as the colours are flattering for everybody. My only gripe is that I found it quite difficult to hold the palette and look in the mirror at the same time, as it folds around the side. But overall, I am really impressed and will be using this palette throughout the season.
Best for: A gift

No, this is not a product for inner city hoodies - it’s the novel male equivalent of makeup-remover-come-exfoliator. Although we don’t use face decoration, the male face does gather all sorts of skin flakes, pore clogging gunk and grime on its daily travels.
Using a cotton pad, kindly stolen from the other half, he smoothes the product over unshaven areas to reduce oil build up. Follow in pre shaven areas to reduce the risk of in-grown hairs. The resulting effect is a tingling evaporation sensation on the now exfoliated and de-flaked face.
Next step: the razor…
M Shave Aloe Gel, £11 for 100ml - 5 stars
This clear blue gel morphs into a silky high-tech polymer lather, which covers every inch of my stubble covered face. Considering that a temporary razor is the playground bully of grooming utensils (unforgiving and an adversary to shaving products), I feared M Shave would fail.
Never has said razor been quite so effective. It eased through tricky four-day growth. No clogging, no hacking, and no bad cuts. The Aloe soothes and the overall feel is smooth and moisturised.
If he has oily skin that needs tender care, this is the ideal product. Hair washes down the sink easily, saving him from the rage of those that share the sink, or kiss the smooth face.
Post Shave Healer, £16 for 75ml - 5 stars
A debate has raged for millennia about whether or not “all good things come in small packages”. Finally; we have some supportive empirical evidence, in the form of this cooling little masterpiece.
Remember my cut throat shave experience? One of the pointers I noted was not to be shy about committing healer product to the fold after you finish, so I tested this product in that vein.
This little bottle is a tardis of allontoin and aloe enriched anti irritation balm; I simply can’t get enough of it. It delightfully comforts, soothes and repairs any skin abrasions. Be on the look out for the anti-blemish variety if late nights cause oily man-spot outbreaks.
Suitable for all skin types, it’s a must have if he’s a man that shaves out of necessity.
M- Lotion, £19.50 for 100ml - 4 Stars
I’d like to believe the ‘M’ stands for magic - were this brand not so classy, it might ring true. This is the final cog in the Clinique routines’ engine - Moisturise.
It is fragrance free, no nasty whiffs to interfere with the spray of fragrance that follows face preparation. It’s quickly absorbed and alleviates that comic book bad guy “taut-face” feeling.
He’ll get a lot of bang for buck as a little seems to do the trick nicely. Keeping face oil under control, whilst maintaining that hydration balance is a tough challenge, yet one that is achieved.
M-Lotion is the river card that completes Clinique’s’ ‘full house’. Cleansed; exfoliated and finally moisturised, he can emerge into daylight like a commando of consumerism.
Feature: SWEET CHARITY (23.10.09)
Those beauty brands are a charitable bunch, backing causes that range from the developing world to the plight of honeybees. Get involved with our pick of guilt-free beauty buys.
BREAST CANCER
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the UK, with one in nine women being diagnosed, so it’s no wonder that the beauty industry is so keen to rally round. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and a host of beauty brands have launched special-edition products to show their support.
Elemis has created a limited edition Essential Beauty Secrets Kit, £50 (www.timetospa.co.uk), comprising bestselling products that include their Pro-Collagen Marine Cream and Pro-Collagen Lifting Treatment Neck and Bust “Boob Tube”, conveniently presented in a bubble-gum pink cosmetic bag. The kit includes a 5-step breast check guide to encourage regular self-checks and the brand has pledged a generous £10,000 to Breast Cancer Care.
Clinique is a long-time supporter of the Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign and this year sees the launch of one of its most desirable limited editions to date – an irresistible keychain, featuring the Pink Ribbon Charm, £15 (0870 034 2566) and miniature versions of three popular shades of the bestselling Long Last Glosswear SPF15 Lipgloss. £2 from the sale of each product will be donated to the Campaign.
Following the pink theme, Essie have just launched the shade Future Dreams, £9.95 (www.nailsbymail.co.uk). Renowned as the go-to nail brand for wearable neutrals, they have specially created this peony shade in support of the Future Dreams charity to raise money in the fight against breast cancer, with all profits from the sale of the polish being donated.
If you want to smell of roses in every sense of the expression, spritz on Jo Malone’s Red Roses Cologne, £64 for 100ml (www.jomalone.co.uk), which is composed of seven types of roses with refreshing hints of lemon and violet leaves. The brand will be making a donation to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation from every bottle sold throughout October in the UK.
HEALTH
Health and beauty go hand in hand - and this natural synergy has resulted in some admirable charity collaborations.
Social responsibility is a core value of French brand L’Occitane, with a particular emphasis on helping those with sensory impairments. Whilst October is widely recognised as Breast Cancer Awareness month, few people realise that it is also the month dedicated to sight. It is estimated that 75% of blindness is preventable or treatable, a statistic that L’Occitane find shocking. They have a long history of working with the sight charity Orbis and have pledged their support for The World Health Organisation’s “Vision 2020” initiative, which aims to eliminate avoidable blindness worldwide by 2020. L’Occitane first introduced Braille labelling on their packaging in 1997 and were recognised by the American Foundation for the Blind last year for helping to improve the quality of life of those who suffer visual impairments. Every year, L’Occitane launch the “United to Save Sight” campaign as part of their commitment to raising money for sight-saving organisations, with a specially developed fundraising product. For 2009, they introduce Moments in Africa, £5 (www.loccitane.co.uk) - a beautifully presented set of three handmade soaps, depicting moments from African life that would make a stunning gift if you can bear to part with it!
Long-term stress has been linked to anxiety and depression – the most common mental health problems in the UK. Aromatherapy brand Balance Me (www.balanceme.co.uk) understand the importance of taking time to pamper and relax in some small way, everyday. The range has been specially developed to fit into a daily beauty routine and each product has an essential oil base to achieve the desired mood balance even when we are pressed for time. Balance Me supported The Samaritans’ Stress Down Day 2009 initiative by donating therapists’ time to provide stress relieving massages, reflexology and facial rejuvenation treatments in offices, along with a percentage donation from internet sales.
It is 15 years since MAC Cosmetics established the MAC AIDS Fund in support of those affected by the virus globally. They launched their iconic Viva Glam lipstick, £12 (www.maccosmetics.co.uk), described as an outspoken deep red, the same year, which has since gone on to become one of the brand’s bestsellers and spawned an extended line of six shades and two lipglasses. The Viva Glam range is unusual in that every single penny from the selling price of the products goes towards the campaign. The MAC AIDS Fund isn’t just a marketing tool - it’s something the brand truly believes in and describes as “the heart and soul of the Company” and with the epidemic being one of the most serious health issues in recent years, Viva Glam is a worthy must-have for every girl’s makeup bag.
CHILDREN
We invest in the future of our skin through the beauty products we choose - and it is now possible to invest in future generations too, as beauty brands are supporting charities that benefit children and young people.
The Body Shop has always been at the forefront of ethical beauty, pioneering charity campaigns and introducing their community trade initiative long before fairtrade beauty was widely available. Their latest campaign sees the brand joining forces with ECPAT, a global network of charities working to stop the trafficking and sexual exploitation of children and young people. Proceeds from the sale of the freshly scented, conditioning Soft Hands Kind Heart Hand Cream, £5 for 75ml (www.thebodyshop.co.uk) are donated to ECPAT with the aim of raising awareness and funding for the cause.
Kathy Philips, founder of luxury brand This Works, celebrated the first anniversary of the Good Works range at Boots last month. She created the range to make high quality aromatherapy products easily accessible, whilst maintaining the strict ethical standards that are close to Kathy’s heart and a key aspect of her ranges. Check out Good Karma Shower Gel, £8 for 200ml (www.boots.com) - 25% from the sale of each bottle is donated to Kids Company. The charity tackles the problems associated with the demand placed on Social Services’ resources by offering practical, emotional and educational support to the thousands of children who are perceived as at risk. The shower gel has recently been repackaged to feature illustrations designed by five year-old, Shennai Douglas, one of the many children to have been helped by Kids Company.
As the festive season approaches, it is natural to turn our minds to those less fortunate, particularly children. Make A Wish Foundation has been granting magical wishes to children and young people fighting life-threatening illnesses since 1986. Start your Christmas shopping early and treat yourself to NEOM’s Christmas Wish Candle, £40 (0870 460 4677), which comprises a blend of cinnamon, ginger, mandarin and tonka bean. The candle captures the spirit of the season from its spicy scent, the cranberry red box and the charitable donation to the Make A Wish Foundation... it’s a little ray of light!
ANIMALS
One of the biggest campaigns that the beauty industry has been involved in is Against Animal Testing. In fact, one of its strongest advocates, The Body Shop, was honoured this month with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the RSPCA. Following that success, what new ways are companies showing support for our feathered and furry friends?
LUSH is another brand to have been recognised by the RSPCA for the numerous ways that they show support for animal welfare and conservation. There is a conscious effort in everything the brand does to ensure their actions are as ethical as possible - from minimal packaging to hand-producing their natural products in the UK and carefully sourcing the ingredients. When LUSH became concerned about the impact of using palm oil in their products, they commissioned research into the effect of the ingredient on the people, environment and animals where it is grown and processed. They were alarmed to find that vast areas of primary rainforest in Indonesia and Malaysia, the last refuge of the orangutan, were deliberately being destroyed to clear land for palm plantations, forcing the animals to the brink of extinction. They immediately looked to alternatives and have now switched all UK soap production to a palm-free base. The launch of Palm Oil Free Sexy Noubar Soap, £2.90 (www.lush.co.uk) - a tempting rose and pistachio treat - aims to raise awareness of the campaign.
And what of the ocean-dwellers? The phrase “out of sight, out of mind” is fitting for endangered sea creatures – which, unlike cute and cuddly land mammals, are easy to ignore. More than half of the Earth’s surface is covered by water and much of this area is outside the ownership and jurisdiction of any one nation, meaning that the High Seas have been ruthlessly abused. They are home to unique and diverse ecosystems teeming with sharks, coral, tuna and turtles and the largest animal on Earth, the blue whale. More than 100 feet long and over 200 tons, the majestic blue whale constantly experiences the threat of human impact. Luxury cosmetics brand Chantecaille have partnered with conservation experts to identify ten threatened locations that demand urgent attention - and have created the lust-worthy La Baleine collection to raise funds and awareness of the cause. The hero product of the range is undoubtedly La Baleine Bleue Eyes Compact, £85 (www.hqhair.com), which features an image of the blue whale and calf in a feminine trio of glimmering, marine toned eyeshadows.
It is not only large mammals that are in need of support. The plight of the honeybee is highly topical – and with an estimated third of all that we eat and much of what we wear dependent upon pollination by them, their decreasing numbers have become a major cause for concern. Burt’s Bees know a thing or two about the benefits of bee products with beeswax, honey and royal jelly used as key ingredients across the range. The honeybee is cited as the foundation of everything the company does - so it comes as no surprise that they have launched an action programme to support research into the decline of the insect. Why not pop a tin of their signature Beeswax Lip Balm, £3.42 for 8.5g (www.myburtsbees.co.uk) into your handbag and show your support every time you nourish your lips this winter?
ENVIRONMENT
We are all aware of the importance of environmental issues, yet the beauty industry hasn’t always been the greenest, with excessive packaging being just one of the criticisms. The trend for natural beauty has seen companies reassess their sourcing methods and consider their impact on our planet.
The strain on Brazil’s natural resources has been well documented, with many species under threat as the rainforest (“the lungs of the Earth”) has been abused. One of these, the Ucuuba Tree, is in danger of extinction because of logging activity carried out in the area. Brazilian haircare company Surya are committed to numerous philanthropic activities in their native country – and when they developed a new range for curly hair, which is typically drier and more fragile than straight hair, they looked to the Ucuuba Tree. Ucuuba oil is a rich, natural emollient similar to that of Shea Butter, making it a highly nourishing treatment for distressed locks. Their use of the ingredient has created a safe haven for preservation and maintenance of a small Ucuuba forest. Discover the wonders of Ucuuba for yourself with Surya Ucuuba Restructuring Hair Mask, £10 for 120g (www.liberty.co.uk).
After Brazil, Peru has the largest area of Amazon rainforest and has been recognised as one of the most ecologically diverse countries in the world. The Rainforest Foundation UK has been working to protect the Selva Central region – a diverse area, which is home to thousands of indigenous people, yet is under enormous threat. Together with partners in Peru, the Foundation is lobbying for the formal protection of forest areas and communities. Lisa Hoffman uses many rare and exotic ingredients sourced from the rainforest in her products, including anti-aging acai oil, antioxidant-rich star fruit extract and moisturising cupuacu butter. 20% of worldwide sales of Lisa Hoffman’s Spa Bath and Spa Shower ranges are donated to The Rainforest Foundation, specifically to benefit the indigenous people. For travel, the 24 Hour Spa Shower Collection Packette, £19 (Harvey Nichols Nationwide) is ideal, containing a single-use ampoule of each of five products to avoid waste.
Crème de la Mer has an ongoing relationship with the international ocean advocacy group, Oceana. The luxury skincare brand’s commitment to the ocean began when founder Dr. Max Huber discovered the rejuvenating powers of Pacific Sea Kelp, used in the patented “miracle broth” that forms the basis of the iconic crème. In keeping with their respect for the ocean, Crème de la Mer ensure all sea kelp used in their products is responsibly harvested from the top layer thereby sustainably maintaining the underwater ecosystem. If you have been looking for an excuse to indulge in their famous Moisturising Crème, £160 for 60ml (www.cremedelamer.co.uk), this is it!
DEVELOPING WORLD
With many ingredients sourced from developing nations, it is not surprising that beauty companies are investing in supplier relations through fairtrade links and charity collaborations.
Makeup Artist Bobbi Brown is an inspirational brand ambassador, balancing family life and a successful career, whilst still finding the time to give something back via her many philanthropic activities. She explains her motivation, “The basics that you and I may take for granted are luxuries for so many women who just want to be able to work and stand on their own two feet”. With this in mind, she has created the FEED10 Pouch, £42 (www.bobbibrown.co.uk) - a canvas cosmetics bag containing three stunning lipglosses, in stores from 1st November. The bag launches in collaboration with the UN World Food Programme – the organisation that recognises and answers the need for one of life’s most basic rights- the right to food and will specifically benefit women. From the purchase of every cosmetics bag, ten women will be provided with food and training. Women are the hardest hit by extreme poverty, with husbands and children generally taking priority when resources are scarce, however education can help to break this cycle.
Organic Surge was born out of ethical intentions when the founders were looking for an affordable alternative to chemical-heavy cosmetics ranges. An ethical approach continues to be integral to the brand, with an emphasis on charitable work in Africa - every product sold helps to support the continent’s most vulnerable children. They have strong links with the Kenya Children’s Home Orphanage, which cares for children who have been affected by conflict, disability and the AIDS epidemic and the Watoto Children’s Charity in Uganda, which re-houses orphaned children. Look out for their new range of gentle skincare products that are caring in more ways than one - from £4.99 (www.organicsurge.com)
TouchMyFace Ltd - UK distributors for brands including Whish and Laidbare - support the Bangladeshi charity Sreepur Village, which was originally set up by one of the co-founders of the Company. Sreepur Village offers a safe haven to destitute women and children in the country, as well as offering education, healthcare and counselling. It is currently home to over 500 children and 130 women who are staying in the village until they are able to live independently back in the community. Laidbare sources some of the ingredients used in their products from Bangladesh and donates a percentage of sales to the charity. In particular, check out the aptly named For Richer, For Porer 3-in-1 Facial Masque, £16 for 50ml (www.touchmyface.co.uk), which deeply cleanses, exfoliates and conditions to leave skin with an enviable radiance.
TRIED & TESTED: INTENSIVE HAIR MASKS (16.10.09)
Give dry, dull, or damaged hair a boost this autumn, by slathering on an intensive hair mask. We’ve put six through their paces…
JAMES BROWN INTENSIVE MASK FOR HAIR, £7.82 (Boots Nationwide)
What they say: James Brown London Intensive Mask helps promote scalp health, while shea butter keeps hair sleek and moisturised.
The Results: I have short hair and find that conditioner usually weighs it down. I assumed the same would happen with this mask, but I was really impressed and will definitely be including it in my regular haircare routine. I didn’t need much of the thick, rich cream to cover my hair, but longer locks would need a bigger dollop. The tube made it easy to apply – much preferable to a pot that I’d need to delve my hands into and risk filling with water in the shower. I followed the instructions and left the mask on my hair for 10 minutes, with a towel wrapped around my head. After rinsing, I noticed the hair felt incredibly silky. After drying, it also had a lovely shine. Better still, the hair lost none of its volume and I could easily style it with my regular products.
Best for: Thin hair
BUMBLE AND BUMBLE CRÈME DE COCO MASQUE, £20 (0207 247 5656)
What they say: Words can’t describe how soft, silky and glossy this trio of tropical butters leaves hair – you just have to feel it for yourself. è
The Results: I enjoyed every second of testing this hair mask – the coconut scent reminded me of tropical holidays and the silky texture left my hair feeling lovely and soft. I have thick hair and dye it myself at home – it isn’t in bad condition, but I wish the colour could stay as vibrant as when I first colour it. This hair mask boosted the colour brilliantly – after blow-drying, I could see it shimmering in the light. It felt like I had just left a salon and treated myself to an expensive treatment – softer and far more manageable. My only gripe is that I needed quite a lot to cover all my hair, so the tube wouldn’t last as long as I’d hope.
Best for: Boosting Colour
LABEL.M INTENSIVE MASK, £12 (0870 770808)
What they say: Help repair the damage with this deep-concentrated conditioning mask. Bran, cottonseeds, shea butter, and amazon cupuau combine to hi-drench and restore hair.
The Results: I’m always in a hurry in the morning, so was pleased when I discovered that this mask would work in just three minutes. I applied it after shampooing, then simply washed it off before stepping out the shower. It was very quick and easy. It had a mousse-like texture and smelt like marzipan, but wasn’t at all overpowering, and the scent subtly clung to my hair when it was dry. My hair is very long and bleached blonde, so tangles very easily when it gets wet – but my brush glided through the hair after using this mask, which saved even more time.
Best for: Convenience
THE BODY SHOP BRAZIL NUT MOISTURE MASK, £7.80 (www.thebodyshop.co.uk)
What they say: Give dry or chemically treated hair some tender-loving care with this moisture-rich potion. With Community Trade brazil nut oil, sesame oil, and organic olive oil, plus honey to bring back softness and shine.
The Results: I tend to avoid hair treatments as they weigh down my fine hair, but the scent of this mask was enough to convince me to try it. It has a delicious, sweet scent that made applying it a real pleasure. I applied the thick cream all over my hair after shampooing, then wrapped it in a towel for 10 minutes, before rinsing it off. I noticed the difference straight away – my hair felt unbelievably soft and silky. After blow-drying, it did look a little flat, but the condition and shine made it well worth it. Better still, the scent clung to my hair all day. I probably wouldn’t use it every time I washed my hair – but for a once-a-week treatment, it’s a brilliant buy.
Best for: Delicious scent
REAL HAIR REAL MASQUE ENRICHING HAIRCARE TREATMENT, £55 (www.realhair.co.uk)
What they say:
The Results: This mask has a lightweight, runny texture – I had to apply quite a lot, as it slipped off my hair in the shower. But I loved the fruity fragrance – it smelled like lemons and instantly woke me up, making it great for early mornings. I applied it after shampooing and left it on my hair for five minutes, before rinsing and blow-drying. The best thing about this product, however, was the way it held my hairstyle in place – far longer than usual, with the shape still intact two days after styling. It looked smoother, shinier, and boosted in colour. This is expensive, but it gives great results so I would recommend it.
Best for: Holding styles
TIGI S FACTOR HEALTH FACTOR BALANCE BOOSTERS, £19.50 (www.tigi.co.uk)
What they say: These intense doses contain key elements from our healthy hair complex to improve the condition of over-processed hair making it soft, supple and healthy. This multi-purpose formula aids in the repair of existing damage and protects it from future breakage.
The Results: This product is divided into four small 25ml doses, which is great for travelling. It is quite an expensive product, so I was pleased when I discovered that I only needed half a tube to cover my shoulder-length hair – the tubes are re-sealable, so there is no wastage. I loved the minty fragrance – and I could still smell subtle traces on my hair after drying it. I have coloured hair, which feels and looks a bit frazzled at times, so was looking forward to seeing the results. The main difference was the way it felt to the touch – it was much softer and silkier and, after just two weekly applications, I noticed that the ends looked much healthier with fewer split ends. It looks shiny, but not dramatically so, and much smoother.
Best for: Repairing damage
Spa & Treatments: ELEMIS FACE AND BODY SENSATION, NATIONWIDE (16.10.09)
What it promises: Trying to decide between a facial and massage? Elemis’ new Face & Body Sensation cuts down on thinking time, giving you the chance to enjoy the best bits from both in one ultra-pampering, hugely relaxing treatment. Choose between an energising ‘ice-cool thermal’ massage or a ‘thermal-soothing’ massage to induce a deep level of relaxation and calm your mind. You will then be treated to an intensive booster anti-ageing facial, designed to smooth out wrinkles and restore youthful radiance.
What happens: This treatment is available nationwide, but I chose to visit Elemis’ luxurious Day Spa in Lancashire Court, London. I arrived at the spa and was invited to sit in a comfortable reception area to wait for my therapist. I took a few minutes to take in my surroundings – rich gold furnishings, flickering candles to instantly create a warming ambience, and the odd exotic-themed vase of flowers or statue of Buddha. My therapist arrived within minutes and I was invited upstairs to a private treatment room, where I undressed and pulled myself up onto the towel-covered bed. The treatment began with an ultra-relaxing head, neck, shoulder and back massage – I chose the energising ‘ice-cool thermal’ massage, as I had plans for later in the day, and was pleasantly surprised to discover that it was refreshingly cold, but never shockingly cold. My therapist had previously asked the level of pressure I preferred and I chose a deep massage, which eased the tense muscles in my shoulders and upper back. After half an hour, I was asked to roll over and my skin was analysed. It was decided that my complexion was best suited to the Visible Brilliance Facial and the remainder of the treatment involved a deep cleanse, exfoliation, facial massage, gel mask, and hydration. I was then given a few minutes to relax in the room, before making my way back downstairs to meet my therapist at reception.
Results: I can never choose between a facial or massage - usually opting to shell out for both - so this treatment feels like it has been created for me personally. I was expecting to feel incredibly relaxed - I have been lucky enough to try Elemis treatments before and have never been disappointed - but I didn’t think the timeframe would allow significant muscle or skincare improvements. How wrong I was! Not only did my shoulders feel far loser and less tense – I had no idea how badly the muscles were knotted until my therapist started kneading – but my complexion literally glowed with health. I enjoyed every second and, despite the hefty price tag, will definitely be booking back into the spa for a repeat treatment whenever my schedule and bank balance allow it.
Price: £80 for 55 minutes.
Location: Elemis Spas Nationwide. Call 01278 727830 for your nearest location. We visited: Elemis Day Spa, 2-3 Lancashire Court, Mayfair, London W1S 1EX. http://www.elemis.com/dayspa/default.aspx
Blog: DR RAVI JAIN BLOGS ABOUT MACROLANE – A NON-EVASIVE TREATMENT TO RESTORE BREAST VOLUME AFTER PREGNANCY AND BREAST FEEDING (16.10.09)
Invariably during pregnancy and after breast-feeding, women experience a change in their breast volume. The upper part of the breast often loses volume and therefore the overall shape of the breast changes to a less satisfying form. The changes are often not pleasant and result in women becoming extremely self-conscious about their bodies. In order to make themselves feel better, many women choose to have some form of cosmetic breast treatment after pregnancy to help restore the volume and shape of their breasts.Until very recently, the only option was painful surgery with lengthy healing times. However, now the use of a non-invasive treatment called Macrolane has been changing the way that women restore the volume of their breasts after breast-feeding and pregnancy. Macrolane is a highly effective breast enhancement filler that rapidly increases the volume of breasts without implants, without the need to stay at hospital or have time off from work. Macrolane is a man-made gel developed from Hyaluronic Acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body. Once the gel has been injected into the area where additional volume is required, the Macrolane attracts water to that area, giving it a natural boosting and lifting effect. The procedure takes less than an hour, is performed under a local anaesthetic and involves a simple injection. There is minimal risk of scarring and doesn’t hinder the results of a Mammogram.
It takes only a few days for the tissue of the breast to fully absorb the water from your body, but within a fortnight, the Macrolane softens and the breast feels completely natural again. The results of Macrolane are not permanent, which means if you are unhappy with your treatment, you can return to your original size and shape after about 12-14 months. If you are happy with the level of restored volume and increased lift that the Macrolane gives your breasts, then you would need to have regular Macrolane top-ups each year.So having children doesn’t have to mean an end to maintaining beautiful, well-shaped breasts, with Macrolane treatments you can get very affordable breast enhancement treatment with no downtime.
Macrolane is not just used for post-pregnancy breast volume loss, but also for women that are seeking breast augmentation, enhancement and reshaping of asymmetrical breasts. Macrolane is a safe alternative to surgery and due to the nature of the gel itself, which is not a foreign substance to the body; there is very little risk of an allergic reaction to the treatment. If you’re looking to restore volume to your breasts after pregnancy, why not make an appointment to speak with a Macrolane Breast Enhancement specialist at Riverbanks Clinic by calling 01582 762877 or visiting http://www.riverbanksclinic.co.uk

Feature: BEAUTY BUZZ (16.10.09)
Ever wondered what beauty journalists talk about when they get together for a few mojitos? Rest your pretty heads – we’ve compiled the ultimate guide to this season’s hottest industry buzz…
GREEN FINGERS
What? Never before has a bottle of nail polish caused such ripples in the fashion world… First spotted at Karl Lagerfeld’s Autumn/Winter 09 show, Chanel’s divine ‘Jade Le Vernis’ has had fans calling Chanel in their droves to get their names on a waiting list for the much-desired lacquer.
The fashion house won’t confirm exactly how many bottles are available to die-hard fans, but industry spies are predicting the figure is in the hundreds, rather than thousands. One thing is for certain – only the best-dressed talons will be wearing jade this season…
The Evidence? Beauty teams – from Beauty Directors down to Interns – are fighting to get their mitts on a bottle. Instyle recently reported: ‘Chanel nail polishes have a habit of becoming must-wear, most-copied colours of a season. And this A/W Chanel have really outdone themselves in the exclusivity stakes.’ (www.instyle.co.uk) Whilst Marie Claire said: ‘Although waiting lists are a common feature for fashion's hottest pieces of the season, they're a rarer commodity on the beauty scene, reserved for the cult must-haves that whip fans into a frenzy.
This season there's one product makeup junkies can't wait to get their hands on - Chanel's Le Vernis in Jade.’ (www.marieclaire.co.uk)
Where to get it? Chanel Le Vernis in Jade costs £19 and was launched onto shelves last week exclusively at Selfridges and Chanel Boutiques. Can’t get your hands on a bottle? Try eBay, but expect to pay an inflated price.
MY EYELASHES ARE LONGER THAN YOUR EYELASHES
What? Sporting a full set of your own eyelashes? We hate to break it to you, but your flutter is embarrassingly ‘last season’. This Autumn/Winter, nobody is anybody in the beauty world without Lash Extensions.
It is well worth the investment – synthetic lashes are individually attached to your own eyelashes, giving a natural (yet impossibly glamorous) finish. It’s a lengthy procedure, but well worth it – after one-two hours on the treatment bed, you will boast a blink worthy of Hollywood. Better still, the lashes will stay put for 2-3 months, with the option of refills to keep your lashes looking full and fabulous, and there’s no need to wear mascara.
The Evidence? Eyelash Extensions have become a hot topic on the beauty pages of glossies, papers, e-zines, and blogs – mentioned with a frequency we can barely keep track of. The trend was cemented when Vogue recently reported ‘If you are thinking of going a little more au natural, then investing in semi-permanent eyelash extensions could be the perfect addition to your look. Imagine not having to use mascara or battle with falsies and yet still have incredible lashes?’ (www.vogue.co.uk) Whilst British Beauty Blogger, who recently opted for a full set of lash extensions, enthused: ‘The lashes are unbelievable; they look as if I've been blessed with unnaturally natural long, thick black lashes - there's no falseness about the look at all and it is quite simply stunning.’ (http://www.britishbeautyblogger.blogspot.com)
Where to get it? There are plenty of brands to pick from, but we recommend Nova Lashes (visit http://www.novalash.com/find.html#uk for your nearest location) – and 3D Lashes (pop ‘3D lashes’, along with the name of your local area, into an internet search engine and it will bring up a list of local beauticians). Both sets of lashes feel light and natural, plus have impressive staying power. Prices vary, but expect to pay around £50 for a full set.
THE BOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN
What? Male grooming ranges have been available for years, but never before have they been swiped off the shelves with such furore. In addition, a tempting array of luxe male spas have recently opened their doors - and surprising statistics are released on a daily basis to prove that our men-folk are finally taking the issue of ‘grooming’ between the horns.
There is no longer any shame in owning a moisturiser – it can be left on the side, rather than hidden away in a drawer like an illicit stash. And soon enough, we foresee that we will all be fighting our partners and husbands to the treatment bed…
The Evidence? Sales of male grooming products are reported to have grown by a whopping 900% - whilst Debenhams have just revealed that 40% of visitors to their Brow Bars are now male. The-Beauty-Pages.com’s Grooming Editor, James York, recently enthused: ‘Women clearly knew this pampering malarkey was totally rock and roll, yet rather than share it with us men-folk; it was perhaps purposefully given a name that makes the average ale drinker likely to avoid it. It’s a conspiracy I tell you!’ Hide your moisturiser girls – this is one trend won’t be losing pace.
Where to get it? Grooming junkies can keep up to date with new product launches through James’ regular blog (see here for his latest post http://www.the-beauty-pages.com/blog.php) - and by adding acclaimed blog The Grooming Guru to their bookmarks (http://groomingguru.co.uk/)
PROPPING UP THE BAR
What? Forget cocktail bars – this season, the only bars worth visiting are those dedicated to all things hair and beauty. Say goodbye to that cocktail shaker – this season, bar staff should be clutching little more than hair-dryers, makeup palettes, tweezers, and false lashes.
Pressed for time after work? Head to a Blow-Dry Bar. Neglecting your eyebrows? Hop up at a Brow Bar. No idea what fragrance suits you? Hotfoot it to a Fragrance Bar. You get the idea – so pull on your favourite cocktail dress and claim your bar stool.
The Evidence? The list of beauty bars is growing by the day, giving us a plethora of coffee break, lunchtime, or after-work options that are quick, affordable, and highly effective. That is enough evidence alone to prove the trend is sticking around – but if you need further encouragement, check out the recommendations from the glossy girls below…
Vogue recommends: ‘Luckily, it's no longer a choice between hit and miss with the tweezers as you can pop into Blink Eyebrow bars nationwide in your lunch hour to neaten things up.’ (www.vogue.co.uk) Whilst the girls at Cosmopolitan describe Chanel’s new Olfactory Bar as ‘the perfect service for those looking for their signature scent.’ (www.cosmopolitan.co.uk). And, finally, you’ll spot the Glamour team heading to B Never Too Busy To Be Beautiful to beautify themselves: ‘If, like us, you often find yourself in a mad panic to get ready for the evening after work (and doing your make-up at your desk just doesn't quite cut it), Oxford Street's new B Bar could be what you've been waiting for.’ (www.glamourmagazine.co.uk)
Where to get it? For makeovers, head to B Never Too Busy To Be Beautiful’s Oxford Street store (www.bnevertoobusytobebeautiful.com) – get down there quick, as it’ll only be there until the end of the year. For fabulous hair, look no further than Daniel Hersheson’s famous Blow Dry Bars (www.hershesonsblowdrybar.com). For eyebrows or eyelashes, head to Blink Bar (www.blinkbrowbar.com) or seek the services of brow guru Shavata (www.shavata.co.uk). To find your perfect fragrance, hotfoot it to Selfridges, London – Chanel’s Olfactory Bar is the perfect
BEAUTY BLOGS
What? Beauty junkies are a demanding bunch. No longer content with their favourite magazines (often swayed by advertising and months out of date), they are looking for honest, unbiased reviews – and they want them fast. Flicking pages is no longer enough – these girls want to click through them.
Right on cue, Beauty Blogs have stepped forward into the virtual abyss to fill the void. There are hundreds of them out there – some written by professional beauty journalists as a sideline and others written by die-hard beauty fans who fancied giving journalism a go. They vary in terms of quality and quantity of posts, but one thing is guaranteed – they are frighteningly addictive.
The Evidence? New blogs are appearing every day – and with them, viewing figures are rising sky-high. Beauty brands are still confused by the siege – some are embracing the new form of media and others are holding off… A virtual war has begun, with bloggers and brands debating traditional media versus the medium of (entirely unregulated) online opinion. In the US, The Federal Trade Commission has even ruled that bloggers should declare the ‘complimentary’ products they have received. It’s a hot topic – and one set to run and run… Keep your eye on this one, as it’s not going to go away – and the legions of blogging fans will be ever so thankful for that.
Where to get it? Without doubt, our favourite blog is British Beauty Blogger. Less of a blog – and more of a beauty bible. A beauty journalist by trade, she knows and reports every product launched, every issue debated, and every event that takes place in the industry. And we mean everything – she posts, on average, three times a day. Her reviews are funny, clever, and most importantly, very honest. Click here – and be prepared to wile away many hours checking through her posts - http://www.britishbeautyblogger.blogspot.com
Other blogs well worth a visit include Beauty Woo Me (www.beautywoome.com), Beauty Junkie London (www.beautyjunkielondon.blogspot.com) and London Makeup Girl (www.londonmakeupgirl.blogspot.com)
HAIR SPA
What? Clear some space in your diary. This season, your locks will be demanding an appointment at a hair spa. We kid you not – regular facials, body treatments, manicures, and basic blow-dries are longer enough – and if you want to be at the top of the beauty game, you need to be prepared to play along with the new rules. Haircare has got serious – and those bottles are basic shampoo and conditioner are no longer worthy of anywhere but the bottom of your bathroom bin.
Salons are now offering everything from luxurious aromatherapy head massages, to hair treatments enthused with Caviar. At the same time, haircare brands have finally realised that we want a little more from our home products – ‘Shampoo: Dry Hair’ is no longer enough, but ‘Shampoo: Pearlescent Milk ’ sounds rather lovely, thank you very much.
The Evidence? Everybody is getting in on the act. Beauty brand Carita has just launched a range of irresistibly haircare products named ‘Haute Beauté Hair’ – we challenge you to resist the ‘Intense Colour Mask Melting Cream’ – whilst Umberto Giannini offers a purse-friendly alternative, with his Spa Rituals range, available at Boots Nationwide. Salons are launching hair spas up and down the country, with treatments on offer from brands as diverse as Kerastase (check out their extensive choice of ‘Rituals’ treatments), Bumble & Bumble, and French brand Phyto.
Where to get it? Those London-based should make Hari’s Salon their first port of call. Based in Knightsbridge, the salon is receiving some amazing press – Tatler recently reported “Now you can go to Hari’s hair spa for a scalp, neck and shoulder massage and a bespoke deep conditioning treatment”. Visit www.harissalon.com for more details. Alternatively, visit www.kerastase.co.uk to locate your nearest salon offering Kerastase Rituals.
Carita’s Haute Beauté Hair starts at £20. Call 020 7313 8780 for your nearest stockist. Umberto Giannini’s Spa Rituals range starts at £4.99.
TRIED & TESTED: DETOXING FACE MASKS (09.10.09)
Looking for a product to freshen skin, boost radiance, or clear blemishes? We’ve put six detoxing face masks through their paces…
ELEMIS HERBAL LAVENDER REPAIR MASK, £26 for 75ml (www.timetospa.co.uk)
What they say: A repair treatment mask with Rosemary, Thyme and Lavender Essential Oils in a Kaolin clay base. Helps decongest and heal blemished skin.
The Results: I love the scent of lavender – it instantly reminds me of home, which is very relaxing. Applying this thick mask was a real treat and I wished I could keep it on for longer – it felt soothing and smelt amazing. I’d recommend applying this mask before a big event, as my skin looked glowing and radiant afterwards. Better still, it felt impressively smooth and my makeup glided on easily. I could smell the fabulous scent long after I washed it off, which made it a very pampering, luxurious treat. A little goes a long way, so the tube will last and last.
Best for: Using before a night out
CLARINS PURE AND RADIANT CLAY MASK, £18 for 50ml (http://uk.clarins.com)
What they say: Deep-down purifying and refining for oily, combination skins. Refining and freshening for normal skins.
The Results: I’m in my early 50’s and have been using Clarins skincare products for years, but I have never had the pleasure of using this mask. It has the texture of a light cream, which sets after application - far nicer than trying to slather on a thick mask. It spreads very easily, so tiny amount covers the entire face. It has a delicious floral scent and I am convinced that my skin smelt of roses afterwards, which was very uplifting. The real bonus was that my skin felt very fresh, looked smoother, and had a lovely glow afterwards. This is definitely going to be one of my staple products over the winter.
Best for: Radiant skin
ELEMENTAL HERBOLOGY, FACIAL DETOX PURIFYING FACIAL MASK, £25 for 75ml (www.spacenk.com)
What they say: A deep-cleansing and purifying facial mask that helps fights against free radicals while balancing sebum production, clearing blocked pores and resolving ‘break outs’. It leaves the skin soft, humidified and glowing.
The Results: I have ‘problem skin’ and have tried lots of face masks in the past to try and help clear my spots – but this is one of the best I have tried. I can honestly say that I noticed a difference after the first application. I tend to breakout on my chin, so I applied a thicker layer on that area and a thinner application over the rest of my face. I could feel my skin tingling, which gave me hope that it was working. I left it on for half an hour and when I washed it off my blemishes had calmed considerably and the redness had faded. I was absolutely delighted with the result and will be investing in this product in the future.
Best for: Clearing breakouts
OMOROVICZA DEEP CLEANSING MASK, £55 for 50ml (www.omorovicza.com)
What they say: Much more than a superb deep-cleansing treatment, this luxuriously smooth, calcium and magnesium-rich mask actively re-energises and brightens the skin as it draws out impurities.
The Results: A strong, thick aroma rose up from the jar as soon as I took the lid off. I wasn’t too keen on the smell, but it became quite subtle after I smoothed it onto my skin. I left the mask on until it completely set and then peeled it off. It came off cleanly and there was no need for soap and water – very quick and convenient. I prefer face masks that can be peeled off, as they seem to clear impurities far more effectively. I wasn’t disappointed – my skin felt far cleaner, smoother, and fresher. I am prone to the odd breakout and am confident that with regular use, this mask will put a stop to that. It’s a pricey product, but overall I would recommend it.
Best for: Deep Cleansing
LISA HOFFMAN CLAY MASK, £42 for 50ml (www.shop.harveynichols.com)
What they say: Creates another beneficial level of deep pore cleansing that absorbs excessive oils and impurities from the skin.
The Results: The first thing I noticed about this mask was the stunning packaging – the pink jar looks like an ornament and would make a fabulous addition to any dressing table. The mask itself is bright green, with a creamy texture. It smoothes easily onto skin – and I only needed a small amount to cover all my face, which is great news as it isn’t the cheapest product. I have greasy skin, which is prone to looking a little shiny – but this product left my skin looking matte and feeling balanced. After rinsing, my skin looked far less shiny particularly down my T-Zone. I have fallen in love with this product and would highly recommend it.
Best for: Greasy skin
PRESCRIPTIVES, INTENSIVE REBUILDING DEEP HYDRATING MASK, £22 for 100ml (www.prescriptives.co.uk)
What they say: A luxurious facial gel mask that infuses skin with nourishing, multi-functional ingredients to boost skin’s clarity and restore a healthy looking glow.
The Results: This face mask has the texture of a thin, clear gel – not something I would usually pick, as I have dry skin and usually opt for skincare products with rich, creamy textures. I was willing to give it a try and was very, very pleased that I did! The mask felt cooling, soothing and luxurious on my skin. It rinsed off easily with a little warm water and left my complexion feeling comfortable and moisturised. Better still, the mask exfoliated away the dry, flaky skin that I am prone to around my nose and on my cheeks. It’s a great price, as the 100ml tube is very generous. I will be using this product throughout winter and am thrilled to have discovered it.
Best for: Dry skin
Feature: QUICK TRICKS (09.10.09)
In a hurry? You still have time to perfect your hair and makeup. Simply follow our tips for effortless style – and you’ll be picture perfect in a matter of seconds…
LUNCHTIME TREATMENTS
Tried every lotion and potion on the market, but find yourself craving instant and permanent results? It might be time to opt for minor cosmetic surgery. If the thought of bruised eyes and trout-pouts makes you want to run for cover, you might be surprised to discover that the majority of treatments can be performed in your lunch break.
“I give people an hour appointment, but 45 minutes of that is spent explaining the procedure and checking the medical background of the patient,” says Dr Ravi Jain, founder of Riverbanks Clinic. “Most people are pleasantly surprised to hear that botox and lip fillers only take five minutes, line fillers take ten minutes, and cheek enhancers take just fifteen minutes. I wouldn’t recommend booking a lunchtime slot if it’s your first time, because you don’t know how your skin is going to react. But once you had minor cosmetic surgery once, it’s quick, easy and painless to upkeep.”
“I won’t say yes to everyone though, if I think you’re too young or you just don’t need botox or fillers, then I wont perform the treatment – it’s important to pace yourself,” says Ravi.
Thinking about trying it for the first time? Take Friday afternoon off work, so that you can rest over the weekend, and return to work on Monday morning looking refreshed and rejuvenated. Everyone will be dying to know your secret…
For more information visit www.riverbanksclinic.co.uk
FABULOUS LASHES & GROOMED BROWS
Not been blessed with Barbie-doll lashes and perfectly groomed brows? It’s time to fake it! When you are pushed for time, there are few better ways to transform your appearance in a matter of minutes…
“There has been a return to glamour recently, particularly with Cheryl Cole in the lime light,” says lash guru Shavata. “Women didn’t previously want to look like they had made an effort, but that has all changed now. Having your eyelashes extended gives you the wow factor and makes your eyes appear brighter and more feminine.”
Vanita, founder of Blink Bar, agrees, “We used to see more women getting the ‘flirty’ eye lash extension - where additional eyelashes are added to the corner of your eyes for a subtle effect - but we now get women asking for a full set. Some people get addicted because they feel naked without a full set of lashes. It makes you feel sexy and people can’t quite pinpoint why you look so glamorous.”
Prices start from £30 for eyelash extensions. Visit www.shavata.co.uk or www.blinkbrowbar.com
You might not pay much attention to your eyebrows, but they change the shape of your entire face. A good wax or threading can make all the difference – giving you a more groomed and youthful appearance.
Benefit offers a brow grooming service at most of their boutiques nationwide. Prices start at just £16 for an eyebrow wax that takes five minutes. Having your brows dyed to match your hair colour takes just a further two minutes, giving you a fresh, wide-eyed look. Visit www.benefitcosmetics.co.uk

My blow dry bar has facilitated a women’s desire to keep up with fashion and grooming.”
Prices start from just £20, including a hair wash. There are eight styles to choose from - from poker straight to big curls. Visit www.hershesonsblowdrybar.com to find your nearest bar.

Spa Review: ESCAPE SPA, CHELSEA CLUB (09.10.09)
Location: Escape Spa, The Chelsea Club, Chelsea Football Stadium, Stamford Bridge, Fulham Road, London SW6 1HS. 0207 915 2200. www.thechelseaclub.com
Facilities: Don’t be put off by the grand entrance to Chelsea Football Club, nor the huge stadium that towers over you as you make your way around the ground. You’ll soon realise that the Escape Spa couldn’t be further removed from the world of football… No muddy boots, deep heat, or burger stands here – this place is dedicated to luxury pampering, deep relaxation, and innovative skincare treatments. Nestled deep within The Chelsea Club, the spa is dressed in deep wooden panels, splashes of turquoise blue, vases of exotic pink orchids, and piles of the deepest, fluffiest cream towels. Lit by candles, the treatment rooms offer instant tranquillity from the world outside and quickly lull clients into a deep state of relaxation. After your treatment, you can opt to pay a daily membership fee, which gives you access to The Chelsea Club’s jam-packed gym and weight room, long exercise pool, spacious changing rooms, and tempting bar and restaurant. Treat yourself to an hour of celebrity spotting as you sit back with a healthy smoothie in the club’s ultra-comfortable armchairs, then head out of the stadium feeling deliciously renewed, refreshed, and preened.
Ambience: Walk through the doors of the Escape Spa and you feel like you are being given access to an exclusive club. Of course, that’s exactly what this place is, but the beauty of it is that the only ‘secret password’ needed to get through the doors is a simple phone call to book a treatment. The place feels luxurious and expensive, yet not at all pretentious. I was struck by how laid-back the spa and club felt and was happy to mooch around in my tracksuit bottoms, despite brushing past men in suits (if only I knew more about football, perhaps I would recognise them), ladies strutting in wearing designer heels, and a couple of well-known, very buffed celebrities. It doesn’t matter who you are here – nobody seems to care – and it feels beautifully relaxed for that.
Treatment Tested: ONLY YOURx Papaya Purifying Peel, £55 for 45 minutes.
I was a little nervous when I heard I was booked in for a facial peel – I had visions of looking in the mirror after the treatment and staring back at bright red, peeling skin, but there was no need to worry. My therapist explained that ‘Peel’ was simply another word for ‘Deep Exfoliation’ and that the Papaya Peel was the gentlest of them all. The treatment started like a regular facial, with makeup removal, cleansing and toning. She then applied the Papaya Peel to my skin and left it for just a few minutes, before applying a hot towel over the top to speed up the process - it did feel a little uncomfortable and stung a little towards the end, but it was over quick enough to be bearable. Extractions followed, which wasn’t compulsory, and then a long, pampering facial, including a relaxing shoulder and head massage. My skin looked incredible afterwards – radiant and super soft. I will definitely be back.
Breaking News: BOURJOIS BRANCH OUT INTO SKINCARE (09.10.09)
Parisian makeup maestros Bourjois have been creating cosmetics since the 19th century, but this October they are branching out into skincare too. Following the philosophy ‘who better to design makeup removers than a makeup company’, the bods behind the brand have been working overtime to create products that quickly and effectively dissolve muck and makeup in a single sweep.
The range includes a two-phase Express Eye MakeUp Remover, Vitamin-Enriched Toner, Express Cleansing Wipes, and Foaming Cleansing Cream, and our favourite is the Fresh Cleansing Milk. Rich and creamy with cooling cucumber extracts, the milky gel formula feels light and silky on the skin, but still manages to remove even the blackest eyeliner.
Suitable for normal, combination and sensitive skin, even the toner will leave you lost for words. Unlike other products that leave skin feeling taught and tight, the complexion feels comfortable and hydrated – ten out of ten.
Bourjois’ new skincare range is available from Boots. Prices start at £4.88.
Blog: LAURENCE NEWMAN – CO-FOUNDER OF CURRENTBODY.COM – DISCUSSES ‘MOOB JOBS’ (09.10.09)
The term ‘moobs’ may make you giggle - but for many, it is no laughing matter. With new statistics revealing there has been a 44% rise in men seeking ‘moob’ jobs between 2007 and 2008, it is clear it is an issue serious enough to convince men to undergo surgery.
The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons said more than 1,000 men in the UK have paid £2,000 to have the operation. Men of all ages, shapes and sizes have been going under the knife but should we really be surprised by this increase?
Grandfathers who have always felt ashamed to show their chest are just as likely to be booking appointments as young men wanting to get in shape to hit the beach. For years it has been considered acceptable for women to undergo breast surgery, and this is now a procedure that is rapidly gaining popularity with men. We are more body conscious than ever before and this desire to achieve the ideal physique is leading people to seek surgical and non-surgical enhancements.
At CurrentBody.com, we’ve seen a significant rise in male customers buying toning equipment to help firm up wobbly areas - and this is something which is set to continue. Home-use equipment is often a preferred option to public gyms or health spas, as it can take away the embarrassment factor by getting in shape in your own home.
Talk of ‘moob’ jobs is in the public domain; it’s no longer considered taboo to talk about it and certainly not to seek treatment to resolve any body issues. Many see it as a quick fix treatment but, as with all surgeries, it is important to consider the psychological impact rather than just attacking physical faults.
As stories of rising obesity continue to hit the headlines, we are likely to see men and women taking action to stop becoming part of this worrying trend. That’s not to say surgery is the only option - there are many non-invasive products on the market, which use electrostimulation to help break fat cells down. The effects may not be as instant as surgery, but when combined with a healthy diet and a good dose of exercise, it may be a safer, more cost-effective way to banish ‘moobs’ and help body confidence.
The rise of ‘moob’ jobs will continue to raise smiles as well as profits for the cosmetic surgery industry. There’s nothing wrong with taking pride in your appearance, but it is important to remain realistic about what surgery can achieve. It might change your physical appearance but it won’t necessarily change your life for the better.
Laurence Newman is co-founder of www.currentbody.com – the first dedicated website selling home use solutions for health, beauty, fitness and sporting needs.
Spa Reviews: THE ROYAL DAY SPA, TUNBRIDGE WELLS (02.10.09)
Location: 12 Vale Road, Post Office Square, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, TN1 1BP. 01892 616191. http://www.royal-dayspa.co.uk
Facilities: Like all the most exclusive clubs, The Royal Day Spa is hidden behind a set of unmarked red doors, just a short stroll from Tunbridge Wells railway station (50 minutes from London). The spa was recently voted the best day spa in the UK by the Professional Beauty Awards 2009 – and it’s clear why they won the accolade… The attention to detail is immaculate – from the flickering lanterns surrounding the saltwater pool, to the large, regal mirrors that adorn every wall, down to the hand-painted vintage tea trays that carry herbal tea to guests after treatments. Even the Jacuzzi goes one better than the average bubbling pool – it’s been infused with moor mud, to relax muscles and nourish skin. Other facilities include an Indian Summer sauna, Crystal Mist steam room, four treatment rooms (one with a shower), and the most indulgent relaxation room you are likely to encounter, which features a vast, squishy day bed covered in giant silk cushions. At lunchtime, the spacious exercise studio upstairs is turned into a banqueting hall – with a twist. Guests sink into giant beanbags, whilst enjoying gourmet treats packed onto pretty cake stands, washed down with a glass of the finest champagne. Even the changing rooms are fit for a queen, with complimentary Aromatherapy Associates bottles in the showers, hair dryers, straighteners, and a wardrobe for your royal robes. One word of warning though – there are no private changing rooms and the shower doors are clear glass, so the body-shy might not want to arrive with their mother-in-law.
Ambience: I visited the spa on a Friday and despite a fair few other guests milling about in their robes, I was seriously impressed by how quiet and relaxing the place felt. It has a grown-up, sophisticated vibe – and would be enjoyed as much on your own with a good book, as it would be if you took along a friend or two. No danger of bumping into raucous hen parties here – if you meet a bride, she’ll be surrounded by equally-poised friends.
Treatments Tested: Lava Shell Ritual, £98 for 1.5 hours
This long, indulgent massage was conducted with lava shells – massage tools that contain a long-lasting, self-heating gel to warm and ease muscles. I had been suffering from tension in my shoulders and upper back and my therapist told me she would pay particular attention to those areas. She did exactly that, along with almost every other inch of my body (bar my tummy, that I requested she leave alone as I am uncontrollably ticklish). I left the massage bed feeling so much better and less tense, yet surprisingly energised. This treatment is pure luxury and I’d recommend it to anybody.
One’s Calendar is Sooo Busy Facial, £46 for 40 minutes
This is The Royal Day’s Spa’s shortest facial and is perfect for those in a hurry (although why you’d want to be in a hurry in this place, I don’t know). It combines every aspect of a facial you could desire – a thorough cleanse, exfoliation, shot of moisture, and the most incredible head and shoulder massage. It might be shorter than facials I’ve had in the past – but the results were just an impressive. My skin was glowing afterwards - so healthy and even-toned that I didn’t even need to apply makeup before making my way home (a very rare occurrence)….
Day Spa packages start at just £90, including treatments and refreshments. Click here for more details - http://www.royal-dayspa.co.uk
Blog: OUR GROOMING EDITOR – JAMES YORK – PICKS A TRIO OF GROOMING PRODUCTS FOR A DAILY SKINCARE REGIME (02.10.09)
To give you a little more strength in depth, I thought that my detailed reviews should be supplemented by short and sweet ‘hot picks’ from the range of samples that I receive and test. My first of these reviews is based on the core trio of products that a modern caveman should be using on his face to impress suitors and colleagues:
Wash/ Shave / Moisturise… in that order.
WASH: REFINERY SOOTHING CLEANER, £16 (www.the-refinery.com/store/)
This little bundle of fragrant joy is packed with essential oils, including rosewood and neroli. With a dab of aloe and some of grandma’s geraniums chucked in, it packs a punch and proves good things do sometimes come in small packages (125ml to be precise). Try it - it’s like a refreshing cider over ice, in Jamie Oliver’s herb garden.
SHAVE: MURAD MAN CLEANSING SHAVE, £19 (www.lookfantastic.com)
Our American brethren have been gorging their faces on this brand for a while, now its headed Brit-side for our grooming pleasure. It is a bizarrely sublime mix of mushroom enzymes and anti-oxidant power. I tested it with a temporary razor, three-day stubble, and skin as sensitive as the French farmers union. It did not disappoint - a truly excellent shaving cream (note that the mushrooms are not of the magic variety).
MOISTURISE: MARKS & SPENCER 24 HOUR MOISTURISER, £4 (www.marksandspencer.com)
That’s right, Marks & Spencer has created a grooming line that is very clearly inspired by some of the premium grooming brands out there. Stuart Rose is known for his style and must have run the rule over this product. It’s a solid moisturiser and stacks up confidently against the bigger brands. A smattering of vitamin E and African Pepper extract seasons the nose nicely for affordable and competent simplicity. St Michael now has a softer face.
Breaking News: DKNY LAUNCHES LIMITED EDITION ‘DELICIOUS ART’ (02.10.09)
Putting a touch of pizzazz into their iconic, apple-inspired fragrance, DKNY’s original Be Delicious Fragrance has undergone a makeover and come out the other side in a Pop Art stylee. Labelled ‘Delicious Art’, the limited edition bottle and packaging is adorned with ben-day dots, lettering and speech balloons, bold block colours and anything else you might expect to see in a 1960s comic strip.Designed by New York comic art extraordinaire and award-winning illustrator Brad Hamann, the graphics tell the story of the Be Delicious girl, who by the way, spends her time living life to the full in the Big Apple and spreading the word that it’s a city where anything is possible! A quirky take on the American dream, this isn’t the first time DKNY have opted for their fragrance to be graffitied with fun and frivolous artwork. Tried & Tested: ANTI-AGEING EYE CREAMS (02.10.09)
Want to smooth, plump, or brighten the skin around your eyes? Invest in a anti-ageing eye cream. We’ve put six to the test.
BLISS THE YOUTH AS WE KNOW IT EYE CREAM, £39 for 15ml (www.blisslondon.co.uk)
What they say: True to 'formula', we've taken the ten most important ingredients we've found for eyes and packed them into one WOW!-eliciting wonder cream.
The Results: My skin is very dry and this thick, rich cream instantly soothed and hydrated the area around my eyes. It didn’t absorb instantly, but left a sheen on the surface – this is great for my skin, but greasier complexions might find it a little heavy. The fine lines around my eyes looked less pronounced, giving a younger and plumper appearance. A little goes a long way, so this pot would last and last, which makes it a great investment. After a fortnight of twice daily use, my skin looks smoother and feels far more hydrated. I’d recommend it.
Best for: Dry skin
ELEMIS PRO-COLLAGEN EYE RENEWAL, £57 for 15ml (www.timetospa.co.uk)
What they say: Elemis scientists spent 3 years developing this treatment cream which has a highly regenerative formula that captures the anti-ageing power. In just 28 days the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the delicate eye area is visibly smoothed by up to 60%
The Results: I’ve never used an eye cream before and now, in my late 50’s, the lines around my eyes are quite heavy and deep. I liked the packaging – it is very sleek and the see-through panel is useful for seeing the level of product that is left. The texture is like a thin serum, which felt soothing and cooling as I applied it to my skin. It took a few minutes to sink in, so I had to wait a while before applying my makeup. I have used the product for two weeks and am already noticing that the skin looks plumper and feels better moisturised. I’m not expecting miracles – I don’t think any beauty products can iron out wrinkles completely - but I am impressed so far.
Best for: Mature skin
DERMALOGICA MULTIVITAMIN POWER FIRM, £30.60 for 15ml (0800 591818)
What they say: Combat visible lines around the eye area with this powerful firming complex. Vitamin A and antioxidant Vitamin C and E improve elasticity and smoothness, while scavenging free radicals.
The Results: Wow, I’ve just found the perfect eye cream! The silver tube contains a paste-like cream, which sinks straight into skin. Instantly after applying it, the puffy areas under my eyes completely disappeared, with the crêpey, puckered skin in the corners looking smooth and youthful. I couldn’t believe how effective it was – especially as I on needed a tiny blob for both eyes. I have been applying it every morning and it’s made applying makeup much easier – it no longer gathers and flakes under my eyes. I’d definitely recommend this to people who suffer from puffiness or sagging skin – it makes you look younger in seconds.
Best for: Firming and lifting
RODIAL GLAMTOX EYE LIGHT SPF15, £90 for 15ml (www.rodial.co.uk)
What they say: This ground-breaking product will not only reduce puffiness, but is clinically proven to help shift those stubborn dark circles. The cooling formula also refreshes, while on a deeper level oligopeptides work to restructure, repair and smooth the skin.
The Results: The pump bottle makes it easy to measure the right quantity, so there is no wastage – important, as it isn’t cheap. The rich cream felt a little sticky when I first applied it, but quickly absorbed and left the usually-tight skin around my eyes feeling comfortable and hydrated. I always have dark circles under my eyes, so was pleased to read on the packaging that it would help to remove them. After a fortnight, there is still some darkness, but it is definitely an improvement – I use a lot of concealer to lighten the skin, but am using less and less. I can’t wait to see the results in another fortnight.
Best for: Dark circles
CLINIQUE ANTI-GRAVITY FIRMING EYE LIFT CREAM, £23 for 15ml (www.clinique.co.uk)
What they say: Rich textured eye cream that firms, lifts and deeply hydrates the delicate eye area. See firmer, less lined, brighter skin all around the eyes. Builds supple cushion back into time-thinned skin.
The Results: I only needed a small amount of this thick cream, so the pot would last a very long time. It’s more expensive than I would usually buy, but it’s definitely worth the investment. The results were instant – it left a slight glow on the surface of the skin, which made the skin look much brighter and smoother. Better still, it seemed to plump out the lines, making my face look younger. I haven’t noticed long-term results, as I’ve only been using it for a fortnight, but I’d definitely recommend it to people with mature skin, as a quick morning fix.
Best for: Plumping
GARNIER SKIN NATURALS ULTRALIFT ANTI-WRINKLE FIRMING EYE CREAM, £8.99 FOR 15ML (AVAILABLE NATIONWIDE)
What they say: Garnier Skin Naturals Ultra Lift products are a complete skincare range to care for skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Contains specially selected Pure Ginger extract.
The Results: The lines around my eyes aren’t deep, but they are starting to bother me. I’ve always used eye cream, but I’d like to swap to an anti-ageing version to smooth these wrinkles and prevent any more appearing. I liked this thin, silky cream – it felt cooling as I applied it and instantly appeared to smooth the skin. It made a great base for makeup – foundation and powder usually end up gathering under my eyes, as the skin is so dry, but it didn’t happen when I used this product. I haven’t noticed any difference in the depth of the lines, but I am pleased the instant results.
Best for: Priming Makeup
Feature: SUPERFOOD (02.10.09)
We pack them into smoothies, throw them onto cereal, and munch them as a snack… Now it’s time to pile Superfood ingredients into our beauty regimes…
POMEGRANATE
It has been cultivated for thousands of years, but never has jewel-like Pomegranate enjoyed such a moment in the spotlight. With powerful antioxidant properties, beauty companies are clambering over themselves to pack the fruit into their products.
Sarah Silvester, owner of Touchmyface Ltd explains, “Pomegranate has the ability to nourish your skin deeply for a radiant glow of youth and health. It works wonderfully as a powerful anti-aging antioxidant, fighting free radicals that damage and age the skin”. Touchmyface Ltd is the UK distributer for Whish, a brand that makes mundane aspects of the beauty regime indulgent. Their Pomegranate Sugar Scrub, £21.20 for 340g (www.touchmyface.co.uk) is no exception. Small crystals of brown sugar gently exfoliate. whilst the balm formula melts into skin to leave it unbelievably soft and nourished, with a juicy fruit scent.
Rodial founder, Maria Hatzistefanis is so taken with the ruby fruit that she named her entire brand after it, with “Rodi” being Greek for pomegranate. Pomegranate ellagic tannin is considered nature’s most potent collagen booster and firming agent and is included in all products. Tummy Tuck, £97.87 for 125ml (www.rodial.co.uk) is just one product from the range to boast firming properties- with regular application, it can reduce the stomach area by one inch in just eight weeks, perfect timing for the Christmas party season! For a purse friendly alternative, try Jergens Naturals Skin Firming Body Moisturiser, £4.88 for 200ml (Boots nationwide), a lightweight lotion that contains pomegranate extract to firm cellulite-prone skin in just two uses.
In skincare, look out for Elemental Herbology’s aptly named Cell Food, £37.68 for 30ml (www.spacenk.co.uk), a milky serum with pomegranate, green tea and aloe vera that soothes sensitive skin and boosts radiance. Those with oily skin will fall head over heels for Nude Moisture Balance, £45.02 for 40ml (www.nudeskincare.com) - a gentle, non-greasy gel which balances and hydrates the skin, leaving it smooth and ready for make-up application.
AVOCADO
Avocado flesh contains as much as 50% unsaturated fats, well known to reduce cholesterol levels when eaten, but what about its beauty benefits? The high levels of oils are so nourishing to skin that in the US, avocado oil is patented as a treatment for some skin complaints, including eczema. For a homemade softening mask, try combining a mashed avocado with a handful of oats and a little honey and apply to skin for ten minutes.
For a less messy alternative, look out for these products when you’re restocking your beauty cabinet for winter…
OPI are long-time fans of the deep penetrating, nourishing qualities of avocado, with their signature Avoplex range. Avoplex Nail and Cuticle Replenishing Oil, £16.10 for 15ml (www.lenawhite.co.uk) is one of the most popular products in the range, whilst the latest addition is Avoplex High Intensity Hand and Nail Cream, £12 for 50ml, looks set to become a winter handbag essential. It sinks into skin with immediate hydrating effects and leaves a delicate fruity scent.
Liz Earle has also recognised the hydrating powers of avocado, a key ingredient in the Footcare range. The new season’s collection of snug boots should not be an excuse to neglect your feet – instead, treat them to some much-deserved pampering after a summer in flip flops. Slough dead cells with Liz Earle Foot Scrub, £10 for 100ml (www.lizearle.com), a gentle, pumice based scrub with invigorating peppermint and rosemary essential oils, before massaging with Foot Repair Moisturiser, £12 for 100ml, to hydrate even the driest skin.
As winter approaches, you might consider swapping your usual body moisturiser for a richer cream or butter. Crabtree and Evelyn Naturals Avocado Butter, Olive & Basil Body Butter. £16 for 200g (www.crabtree-evelyn.co.uk) is a rich formula, but quickly absorbs and leaves no greasy residue on the skin’s surface. It has a wearable, fresh scent with a subtle hint of basil. It has a base of natural ingredients, with no parabens or mineral oils.
Treat your tresses with Burt’s Bees Avocado Butter Pre-Shampoo Treatment, £11.26 (www.myburtsbees.co.uk). Apply the product to wet hair on a weekly basis before shampooing. The intensive mask contains avocado, olive, almond and oat oils to care for locks, leaving hair looking shiny, but not greasy.
WHITE TEA
Renowned for its health benefits, white tea was once exclusively reserved for Chinese emperors who believed it offered a promise of immortality. Whilst its benefits might not stretch to eternal life, it is a potent source of antioxidants, boasting as many as three times those of green tea, key in fighting free radicals and maintaining a youthful appearance. Thankfully, it’s now more readily accessible and cosmetics brands are beginning to introduce it as a core ingredient in their ranges.
Begin your antioxidant rich skincare regime with Korres White Tea Fluid Gel Cleanser, £12.75 for 200ml (www.ASOS.com), gentle enough for use around the eyes, it is suitable for all skin types and doesn’t strip skin’s natural oils. For a weekly skin treatment, apply Neal’s Yard Remedies White Tea Enriching Facial Mask, £21.60 for 50g (www.nealsyardremedies.com) to clean skin. It is a clay-based mask, which draws out impurities, leaving skin feeling deeply cleansed and hydrated.
Beauty brand Origins has also recognised the potential of white tea as a skincare ingredient and has based its bestselling A Perfect World range on the superfood. Origins A Perfect World White Tea Skin Guardian, £28 for 30ml (www.origins.co.uk) is a silky gel serum with a sweet orange scent, which glides onto skin to create a protective barrier against skin damaging stress, pollution and environmental aggressors. Follow with your favourite moisturiser and maintain hydration levels throughout the day by regularly spritzing with Dermalogica Antioxidant Hydramist, £28.90 for 150ml (0800 591818), which instantly firms and refreshes tired skin.
GRAPE
Grapes, including their stems and seeds, contain high levels of free radical fighting antioxidants, making them a worthy ingredient in skincare ranges.
Recreate the deep clean feeling of a spa facial with Bliss Clog-Dissolving Cleansing Milk, £20 for 200ml (www.blisslondon.co.uk), which contains grapeseed extract to protect skin, along with enzymes for gentle exfoliation and essential oils to nurture. It doubles as a five-minute mini-mask when your skin needs an extra boost to leave it soothed and radiant.
Moisturise in the morning with Ole Henriksen Herbal Day Creme SPF15, £30 for 50g (0207 235 5000) - a lightweight cream that combines sun protection with the antioxidant properties of grapeseed for the ultimate in premature aging prevention. Refresh skin throughout the day with Caudalie Eau de Raisin, £4 for 50ml (http://site.caudalie.com/uk) - water that has been extracted directly from grapes at harvest time. At night, nourish skin by massaging with a pure oil such as Primavera Organic Grape Seed Oil, £16.53 for 30ml (01558 870560), which is rich in essential fatty acids and particularly beneficial to mature or inflamed skin.
Grapeseed extract is equally effective when applied to the body. Actress Teri Hatcher reportedly pours leftover wine into her bath to harness the antioxidant qualities but if that seems like a waste of your favourite red, check out REN Grapeseed, Jojoba and Shea Butter Body Cream, £16.75 for 200ml (www.renskincare.com), which moisturises and boosts skin’s natural protection without any unnatural additives.
BLUEBERRY
Blueberries might be a delicious addition to muffins and smoothies, but they have serious beauty benefits to offer too.
Blueberries contain high levels of vitamins C and E, both powerful antioxidants and beneficial in caring for the skin. Need convincing that superfoods can be advantageous when applied topically? Lush’s thick, fresh face mask, Catastrophe Cosmetic, £6.45 (www.lush.co.uk) is results-driven and calms even the most sensitive skin.
If you prefer to treat your skin from the inside out, try adding a dropper of Dr. Brandt Blueberry Water Booster, £28.38 for 60ml (www.spacenk.co.uk) to a glass of water. Each dose of the supplement is equivalent to 15 cups of green tea leading to an increase in skin’s radiance.
And what about the rest of your beauty regime? Soap & Glory Blueberry Big Butter, £9 for 300ml (Boots nationwide) is jam-packed with ingredients that your body will love, including cocoa butter, sweet almond oil, blueberry oil and exfoliating fruit acids. Whilst Tommyguns’ award-winning Blueberry and Ginseng Shampoo, £4.88 for 250ml (Boots nationwide) is a high-street bargain that utilises the power of blueberry extract to enhance shine and vitality as ginseng transforms dull, lifeless hair by adding volume.
COCOA
We are all aware of the uplifting powers of chocolate - the scent alone is said to be sufficient to increase serotonin levels in the brain –so why not add a sweet element to your morning shower with Laura Mercier Chocolate Truffle Creme Body Wash, £28 for 200ml (www.spacenk.co.uk), an indulgent and creamy body wash with an intense chocolate aroma that is practically good enough to eat!
Cocoa butter has long been recognised as a highly effective moisturiser as it is solid at room temperature, yet its melting point is body temperature. This makes it ideal for use in beauty products as it can be included in concentrated levels for maximum benefits and as it melts into skin, it is easily absorbed. Palmer’s have been promoting the ingredient for years with their range of affordable bodycare products. No beauty cabinet should be without Palmer’s original Cocoa Butter Formula Jar, £3.59 for 100ml (Boots nationwide), which soothes sunburnt skin, reduces the appearance of scars and is helpful in preventing the appearance of stretchmarks during pregnancy.
The Body Shop’s bestselling Cocoa Butter range uses cocoa beans sourced via their Community Trade programme in Ghana, making Cocoa Butter Cream Body Scrub, £12.20 for 200ml (www.thebodyshop.co.uk) - a guilt-free way to care for skin. The creamy scrub contains ground rice and almonds to gently remove dead cells, leaving skin soft and delicately scented with a delicious marzipan fragrance.
Karin Herzog is another brand to include chocolate as a key ingredient. It is the inspiration behind the groundbreaking Chocolate and Oxygen Advanced Anti-Aging Facial, from £50 at selected salon (0800 0562428). Julie Cichocki, Global Treatment Developer, explains, “the antioxidant concentration in cocoa is twice that of red wine, two to three times that of green tea and four to five times that of black tea. Antioxidants are thought to play an important role in slowing the effects of aging. Combine it with oxygen and water and you have a powerful and potent defence”. Recreate the treatment at home with the Chocotherapy product line, from £28.99 (www.karinherzog.co.uk), which is so indulgent that even those who find skincare a chore will look forward to the regime!
